Towards a genuine
European Area of Justice
It has often been said that Finland is a society of trust.
When making agreements, Finns tend to trust that
commitments are respected and deals are not broken.
Finns also trust the judiciary, as evidenced by a recent
Eurobarometer survey, where Finland and Denmark
ranked number one in the EU when citizens were asked
whether they tend to trust the judicial system in their
countries or not. In the management area of settled

?Simultaneously with the
increase of amphetamine in
the market, for example subutex usually disappears momentarily, and vice versa.?
All the most common
drugs are, however, avail-
same way as tobacco or alcohol, whereas big parties are
against legalising mild drugs.
The big and small parties
also agree on some things:

think that money trafficking to

and that banks should never
again be supported by tax payers. the use
of it has recently hit the roof.
There is a lot on offer.?

amphetamine void on the
market.

Piketty didn?t use data from Finland, but information

currently only 4. During the
1990s recession the rate of return on capital in Finland
fell extremely low. Yet there can be cyclical variations, where the short-term average is higher or lower.

the situation in Germany, Finland also has
lower asset prices. Since then it has been much higher than the average, most likely because of a normal
cyclical upswing and Nokia?s unusually far-reaching
success. Yet he
also allows one to make a critical examination of some
of our problems.
ONE interesting observation Piketty found is how the
value of assets differ between countries. Of
the countries that have re-
sorted to rescue packages,
Greece and Portugal are already suffering from deflation, according to the EU?s
statistics office.
Deflation refers to a drop
in the general price level,
leading to an increase in purchase power.
Consumers tend to put
off purchases if they expect prices to continue to
go down, which may lead to
business activities slowing

THE Mexican government is
facing a crucial test over the
coming days as it moves to
rein in armed militia groups
across the mountain towns
of Michoacan, the volatile
western state where avocado farmers and lime pickers have banded together
to drive out drug cartel
gangsters.
While the ?self-defense?
movement has been celebrated in many corners of
Mexico, it has also produced
embarrassing images of
teenage vigilantes running
highway checkpoints and
brandishing AK-47s and other weapons that are supposed to be illegal.
The government of President Enrique Peña Nieto began demobilising the militias
this weekend and replacing
them with a new force, the
Rural Police, whose ranks
will be drawn from the vigilantes themselves.
But the government?s demobilisation push has also created the potential for
new clashes: between Mexi-
can security forces and militiamen, but also among
rival militias, including those
who have boycotted the process and allege their former
comrades are morphing into
new, government-sanctioned
criminal groups.
Peña Nieto has designed
a high-ranking government
lawyer from his inner circle, Alfredo Castillo, to manage the pacification plan, and
on Saturday, Castillo stood

ratsastusfunny. Food is just
the medium; a perfect medium to get to know new people. The first Restaurant Day, Antti and I had a bicycle bar. But that?s only
our ideas; when you involve
a thousand people you get a
huge richness of fresh ideas.
Restaurant Day unleashes
such a huge potential and creativity in people- for one day
everything is possible!
Are you surprised
by the global success?
In two years it?s become the
world?s biggest food event,
reached 1 million people and
happens in over 50 countries.
Of course, you can never expect success like that. Treat it like an
adventure. Why isn?t there any
street food?. All the other times I?ve
been really busy with organising stuff and also wanting
to enjoy myself.
Do you have any top
tips for people enjoying
Restaurant Day?
Do a bit of research and plan
your route. 1 aukio

café or bar is a very common
dream for many people; Restaurant Day offers a possibility to realise that dream.
How did it start?
My friend, Antti Tuomola,
came up with the idea and
proposed it to Olli Sirén and
me. The last Restaurant Day I made mushroom

Timo Santala hopes that Restaurant Day will eventually become
a holiday, like Vappu or Christmas.
on participatory events, and I
instantly recognised that we
could be onto something big.
How many times have
you been involved with
running a restaurant
on Restaurant Day?
Two times. You?ll enjoy a really unique experience.
And tips for
running a restaurant?
Again, planning. Try the home
restaurants. It?s more fun
in a group. It?s also a movement of
free participation and complete freedom; you never
know where it?s going to go.
Does that scare you at all?
No, it doesn?t

. KellokumpuLehtonen argues that one way
of fixing the problem is to centralise the treatment of cancer.
?A central hospital may
well only have one oncologist who never comes across
all the different cancer types
during their whole career,?
she explains.
?We have more than 30
doctors who can specialise in
treating different cancers.?
Leinonen would centralise also the diagnosis phase
as ?doctors should also see
a high enough number of exceptional findings?.
RareCare and the national cancer treatment strategy, which was approved four
years ago, also advocate centralised treatment.

A N N I K A R A U TA KO U R A . Even then Vitamin B
cannot be ignored. The Cancer Register statistics show a similar trend for
survival after one, three and
five years after the diagnosis.
?A delay in diagnosing
the disease goes a long way
in explaining the difference,?
says Leinonen. No deficiency was noted among the
healthy test group.
What about depression,
then. says Pirkko Kellokumpu-Lehtinen, professor
of oncology at the University
of Tampere and chief physician at the Tampere University Hospital.
?All other cancer types
are rare, including childhood
cancers.?
Maarit Leinonen, the
chief medical officer at Finnish Cancer Registry, explains
that the number of rare cancer diagnoses may vary from
one up to more than 300 a
year, with a cancer defined as
rare if it has an incidence less
than 1 in 20,000.
The list of rare cancers
is long, with the European
RareCare project including
186 cancers and numerous
cancer subtypes in its register of rare cancers.
One of these rare diseases affects one in five European cancer patients,
amounting to more than four
million sufferers. Those with the
highest levels of Vitamin B12
did not have an increased
risk of depression symptoms.
Seppälä believes that the
results should be used in
planning treatments.
?When a person is diagnosed with depression, it
would be sensible to measure
the Vitamin B12 concentration in their blood.?
Vitamin deficiency may
not always be observed by
the person in question. H S
N iina W oolley . The vitamins of this
group are often found in the
same foodstuff, such as fish,
meat, milk, yeasts, whole
grains, peanuts and seeds.
These ?nervous vitamins?
are necessary in metabolism,
the production of energy and
the formation of red cells. A lack of Vitamin B
increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, intestinal cancers, depression and
memory-related sicknesses.
Vitamin B12 deficiency increases the likelihood of having Alzheimer?s disease or
another dementia.
The good news is that
Finns usually have a good intake of Vitamin B, a 2007 report by Finravinto reveals.
The exception is folate, which
can be found in particularly
significant amounts in vegetables, berries and fruits.
According to experts a
lack of folate signifies a major
lack within the Finnish diet:
we should consume vegetables almost twice as much.
Because Vitamin B12 is
only found in products of the
animal kingdom, vegetarians and vegans particularly
are at risk. According to experts, the only
reliable way to study vitamin
levels is through a laboratory
test at a health care centre.
Alarming signs of a Vitamin B deficiency may include
fatigue, weakness, problems
of memory and concentration, the numbing or tingling
of hands and feet, skin symptoms and ulcers in the corner
of the mouth.
A prolonged Vitamin B deficiency can lead to perma-
nent nervous and memory
damage. According to
RareCare, the diagnosis is often delayed, care is not knowledgeable and research on
various treatments is lacking.
Unpromising results
The Finnish Cancer Register
is carrying out two studies
on rare cancer, one concerning centralised cancer care
and the other delays in the
treatment of rare cancers.
The preliminary results
show that treatment results
are not as good as for common cancers as measured
by survival after treatment.
Eleven per cent of lung cancer patients are alive after
five years, compared with
89 per cent of breast cancer
patients.
Vitamin B can
provide a natural
aid for stress
The brain requires Vitamin B to calm down.
Stress, depression and memory-related problems can be related to a lack of Vitamin B.
L A U R I S E P PÄ L Ä . Folic acid
is a synthetic form of folate,
i.e. For example a study by Okayama University in Japan revealed that
those who suffer from panic disorders and hyperventilation have a deficiency of
Vitamin B6 and iron. H T
year, thousands of
Finns find out they have a rare cancer.
?Prostate, breast, lung
and bowel cancers are common,. Doctor
of Medicine Jussi Seppälä?s
dissertation revealed that a
lacking intake of folic acid
and Vitamin B12 increased
the risk of certain symptoms of depression, such as
a lowered mood. Vitamin B also supports brain
cell functions and advances
the production of serotonin,
a neurotransmitter that lifts
the mood and regulates sleep
and heart and circulation.
Vitamin B may pose a
natural remedy for stress.
Researchers at Swinburne
University in Australia studied the effects of a Vitamin
B compound on work-related
stress on a 90-day treatment
period.
The test took into account
the personality differences of test subjects as well as
work demands.
Test subjects consumed a
strong Vitamin B compound

caution during the treatment periods but at other times I can lead a normal, quiet life.?
Survival figures for patients with a rare cancer are
worse than the corresponding figures for patients with a
common cancer, reports RareCare. Their stress
levels were decreased by 19
per cent.
Anxiety, depression, hostility and fatigue were also
reduced among those who
consumed Vitamin B

Food that has been stored at

City of Helsinki is notified
of 80 to 90 incidents of food
poisoning a year, five or six
of which are caused by dishes eaten at home, says Hannele Kotilainen, a doctor of
infectious disease at the City
of Helsinki. Restaurants are not the only source
of food poisoning, with numerous cases arising in private homes every year. Lamb had been braised in
sherry into tender strips in
the Spanish style. Make sure that
the fluid generated when the
product thaws does not come

When handling raw meat,
chicken or fish, you should always wash your hands, cutting boards and dishes before

3. Even the
stronger tastes were covered
by smoke.
Then fried scallop had
been stuffed in the clamshell, along with goat cheese
crème, onion with vinegar,
pancetta ham and tomato.
The flavours clashed with
each other.
Then there were top dishes. The aftertaste is refreshing. Hands should
also be washed during cooking when you start handling
a new foodstuff, for example when shifting from preparing a salad to handling a
ready dish.
Use of disinfectants is
not recommended as they
can contribute to the emergence of resistant strains of
bacteria.
You should also avoid
cooking for others when ill.
Also, if you have just had norovirus infection in the family, it is better to make that
cream cake for guests on another occasion.

The kitchen contained the
chef and the boys. Bronda features the familiar culinary
countries of Spain, France
and Italy. This trend is worth following.
What is it like?
The wine is fairly light red in colour. Bad hygiene
The best way to stop harmful bacteria from finding its
way into food is to wash your
hands diligently with water
and soap always before cooking and eating. Six degrees
should never be exceeded.
For cutlets and vacuumpacked fish the use-by date
can be far off in the future
but if the fridge is too warm
the food will go off before
that date.
Also, be mindful of where
in the fridge you store items.
Often the coldest areas can
be found low down and at
the back of the fridge, while
the top shelves, front of the
fridge and the boxes on the
door are the warmest places.
2. An incident can
refer to one or more people
falling ill.
A typical cause of food
poisoning is Listeria, bacteria found in cream cheese,
vacuum-packed fish and
vegetables.
The real number of outbreaks of food poisoning is
difficult to estimate as only
a fraction of the incidents are
reported to authorities.
If a product is already

poisoning can strike even if

Evoking the sounds of
soul and funk music as it was
at its height in the late 1960s
to mid-1970s, Jones is bringing her nine-piece backing
band, The Dap-Kings to The

Despite trying to forge a

Ivan Locke has a cold.
The Birmingham construction manager and title character of Locke . with
the incalculable added value
of the great Tom Hardy, here
masterfully carrying a taut,
engrossing one-man show.
The reason for Locke?s sudden change of mind becomes
clear within the first several
minutes of Locke, but in a movie
in which every second counts,
even that early detail counts as
a spoiler. says Ali Jahangiri, one of the comedians and
organisers of the event.
There are 30 comedians
performing, with 12 different
nationalities. In many ways,
the movie feels like the reply to a question: What would
happen if we pared down
moviemaking to its simplest,
most elemental bones?
In the hands of a virtuoso
like Hardy, the answer is a riveting exercise in voice, facial
expression and that mysterious x-factor known as charisma, that ineffable command
presence that grabs the audience by its collective throat
and never, ever slips.
Knight occasionally breaks
away from Hardy?s face, capturing the sheen of the car?s reflective surfaces, then returns
to a man bathed in the jaundiced glow of streetlights and
his own sickened realization
that the life he has so carefully constructed is on the brink
of implosion. When

car makes its way on the rainslicked highway.
Despite Locke?s studiously even-tempered attempts
to hold himself accountable
for his decisions (his soothing tones recall Richard Burton at his most incantatory),
the tension keeps inexorably

to Knight?s own canny command of pacing, structure and

to an unknown person on the

get there?), Locke commences
a 90-minute drive to London,
captured in virtually real time
over the course of a movie that
unfolds like one of the great
radio dramas of yore . (Much like another
well-constructed thriller, Jeremy Saulnier?s Blue Ruin, Locke
turns out to be a portrait of a
man either trying to outrun or
heal his own past.)
Written and directed by
Steven Knight . Punctilious, conscientious, powered by belief
in his own rectitude and practicality, Locke is a soft-spoken, even modestly elegant
man, at least until those moments when, overwhelmed by
the cascading effects he?s set
in motion, he lets loose with a
shouted vulgarity or diatribe
against an unseen ghost in the
back seat. It is a unique opportunity to see stand up comedy
where the audience can participate in the show.?
Even though nowadays
there is a lot of English stand
up comedy on offer in various
towns of Finland, it is still a
relatively new scene.
?I, together with Nickolay Antonov, established the
first English language stand

2005. André
Wickström, on the other hand,
gigs regularly around the Nordic countries. The top
stand up crew here in Finland
is super talented. For example Ismo Leikola, who?s in the
verge of a breakthrough, has
been invited to perform in Just

which is a huge deal. I wanted to be more
neat, but it?s not easy to stop
when you are painting. But I have the turbulence of what I want to do.
Otherwise I could not paint.
If you have a normal life you
can?t really write a bestseller, do a beautiful painting or
create good music, you need
to have something going on
in your mind.

Finnish schools follow
the Nordic education system,
which in short represent students as pupils, who learn
and study as much as they
want and not as much as they
have to.
Interactivity and freedom
of creativity could be a short
description of their system.
To conclude with some
cheering-up words: it seems
the spring is finally reaching Finland. Finnish language is so
different from ?common. Since it?s quite hard to
find a job without speaking
Finnish, I decided the easiest way was to become an aupair, and meanwhile, besides
studying the language, trying to work in journalism as
much as possible.
Maybe Finland feels like
second home to me because
there are some common
things between here and Slovenia. Both nations do well in winter sports
and both countries know
how to make a black sausage
(krvavica . Slovenia, located on the sunny side
of the Alps, as travel guides
say, has became more and
more popular for tourists.
Unfortunately under the nice
touristic surface there?s a big
problem of unemployment
for young, educated people.
This is the main reason I returned to Finland, where I
first did my exchange programme as a journalism student in Helsinki.
Coming to Finland for the
first time for me was nothing but enjoying the diverse
life in an unknown country,
where even buying groceries was sometimes an adventure. After living in Helsinki for few
months I realised that stereotypes about Finns aren?t
completely true. European languages, that
sometimes I try to help myself with Swedish and knowing German and English. Warmer days
are coming, so perhaps some
booze and ice cream (both
very expensive in a Slovenian?s eye) will replace the maito kahvi, that Finns drink a lot.
Actually, speaking of maito, Slovenes would never
drink milk with lunch!
Households, companies,
housing cooperatives.

and freezing temperatures. Yes,
I did roast cucumber instead
of zucchini, but there is a
bright point to every story ?
you always learn something
from it.
I wasn?t one of the typical
exchange students: I was curious and interested in getting closer to the Finnish
state of mind. Success of the largest chain
of spas in China, Liangtse, continues in Europe. and go exploring. Both are quite well
covered with forest and water, have high level of suicides
(and both are known as a
?drinking nation?). I wouldn?t
say Finns are shy people ?
we all love our own bubble
of peace, don?t we! Once you
get to know them (perhaps
you are the ?ice breaker?),
they are the warmest people ever, trying to make you
as comfortable as possible.
I had many amazing experiences meeting Finns around
the country and I still meet
up with most of them, whenever we happen to be in the
same place.
In this series expatriates write about their lives in Finland.
Whenever I had time,
I took a tram for fun and
drove the whole line, watching people and getting myself
orientated.
Now, two years later, every time I visit the capital it
feels like I can totally handle it. Hundreds of customers visit our facility in Helsinki each month to receive holistic treatment and relaxing massage.

Escaping to the north
Finland really feels like second home to me, although
my home country is located about 2,000 kilometers
southwest from here. The feeling of not getting lost in the city, thinking
of the shortest way to walk,
not counting stops, because
you know where to get off
automatically, and trying to
make simple conversation in
Finnish makes me feel like
somehow I belong here. mustamakkara).
The biggest difference
can be seen in the lunch habits, prices and education system. After
all, an exchange does impact
your life forever.
Upon getting all my exams back home done, I went
for a holiday to Helsinki and
soon I decided to give it a
shot and try to find work
here. 21 MAY 2014
