Winter break on the slopes If you've noticed it is a little quiet around town this week, it's because ski-holiday has started in southern Finland. In Hakaniemi last winter, a similar accident occurred, in which a pedestrian was

Finland's first racially motivated murder?
For all we know this could be Finland's first racially motivated murder being overlooked as such for the simple lack of will to investigate it from that perspective, writes Jonathan Hadley.
IT WAS described as a `spur of the moment' shooting of `two foreign men' by a Finnish man at a pizzeria in Oulu on the night of Saturday 18 February. I might be wrong in the Finnish case, but in UK police-media terms, the often quoted `police spokesman' is usually an officer at the scene who is happy to give his opinion when approached by a journalist, but not his name and is rarely the official or informed police spokesman for the incident in question. Viewpoints are commentaries written by experts and authorities about specific topics. For to secure the trust and confidence of the communities that such incidents affect the most, the police need to be actively vigilant for indications of it and be seen to willingly act against it rather than readily dismiss the notion of its possibility out of hand without proper basis or due consideration at the early stages of a murder inquiry.. the ice by heavy blows to the head and body. Curiously, though, the brief news report proceeded to quote Chief Inspector Risto Viippola of Oulu Police as saying "We cannot say what the motive was". And in any case, why then kill yourself after `settling the debt', if that is what motivated the shooting. Ed. For all we know this could be Finland's first racially motivated murder being overlooked as such for the simple lack of will to investigate it from that perspective.
BY MONDAY morning more was known about the circumstances, including the fact that the gunman had died of his self-inflicted injuries in the early hours. The man he left seriously injured, but in a stable condition, was the worker's 42-year-old uncle, also from Morocco and former own-
ported, is that there was noone else on the premises and neither the shooter nor the surviving victim was able to be spoken to by police due to their injuries. Articles should be at least 5,000 characters-with-spaces long (maximum length 10,000). But it seems that threatening behaviour and violence in the suburban districts of Oulu is not restricted to isolated cases by the odd individual slipping the watchful eye of the local police. I would suspect that it came into the shooter's possession more in consequence of his `acting smartly' than as one of his `ill-considered actions' that brought him to the occasional attention of the police in his time since being released from prison. Either way, it is clear that there is out there the kind of ill-informed, insidiously irresponsible political language and thinking that would delight in seeing a racially motivated murder take place in Finland. I DOUBT the police spokesman and Chief Inspector Viippola are one and the same. And while known by police to have a violent background, all his previous victims, the police point out, had been Finnish rather than foreign. The following day's Yle News was quick to report that police had already "ruled out racism as the motive". Nevertheless, it seems that the possibility of racism in this case remained only a secondary consideration, and reluctantly so at that. "HOW IS
zeria owning residents, including many of immigrant background, have planned a demonstration for Friday 24 February and will be closing their pizzerias for a time during that day to mark it.
THE SHOOTING, therefore, seems to be by no means an isolated act of violence by one individual. One can see it as part of a wider tendency of local violence toward a group of people who are largely characterised by their immigrant status as `foreigners' in the area. The Finns Party has been quick to condemn the comments and is likely to dismiss the maker, Tommi Rautio, from its ranks. It seemed premature to be ruling anything out at all. I'm not sure if that makes too much difference but one surface explanation based upon it might simply be mental instability of sorts and an explosive, lethal, temper like farmer Lalli's. Perhaps this is the broader community based issue of safety and security that local police and the authorities must face. But like Lalli's brutal axe attack on the crusading Christian from Scotland (via Sweden), what triggered it, if not something alien that the victim represented to him at some deeper sub-conscious level?

er of the pizzeria. The man he shot dead was a 21-year-old Moroccan man working at the pizzeria. Jonathan Hadley is a former British police officer and independent research of European policing and security. He has published (in Finnish) in an edited book on policing and immigrant integration, through the Police College of Finland (report 67/2008. Presumably that includes racism. And the police themselves suggest he was simply going for a pizza. However, he added that other motives are being concentrated on at present. The current owner, who it seems was the only other person on the premises at the time, was a 39-year-old Algerian, who fled when the shooting started. Even if, after due investigation into the shooter's reported `extreme-right wing' links, it turns out not to be the case in the end, the willingness to consider it demonstrated by the police would have gone a long way to reassure local residents (foreign or otherwise) that the matter is taken seriously by the authorities.
basis for its elimination. So how any `ruling in' or `ruling out' of motive for the shooting could have been made in the early stages of investigation on Sunday is difficult to imagine. It was not clear from early reports if the owner had been spoken to by police for his account or if the shooter had any previous connection with the Monaco Pizzeria or any of the victims. According to news reports, the 24-year- old Oulu man had been living locally since November after serving only a few years of a life sentence for murder. Whatever the gunman's organised

a proven killer allowed to walk free to kill again after just a few years?" is an obvious question that many are asking. The surviving victims of the shooting say that there had been no dispute with the man and that it had taken them completely by surprise. One could speculate that gunman, pizzeria owner and the two victims were involved in some underworld activity that had to be dealt with by violent retribution the gunman having to `collect' on a bad debt with the blood of another. A. On the face of it, it remained a distinct possibility. One can only imagine he means either `race war' or `war against foreigners' or some variant of the same theme. While Yle News was still reporting that "the police do not believe the shooter was motivated by racism", the daytime online edition of Aamulehti was quoting Detective Chief Inspector Viippola as saying that the man (a known criminal) had a rightwing extremist background and that racism is now being taken into account as a possible alternative motive in the investigation. What motivates the immediate `ruling out' of racism (and racism in particular) as a motive when so-called `foreigners' or `people of immigrant background' are victims of violent crime, without any apparent
crime links may have been they seem less likely to be behind the shooting's motive than anything else.
TUESDAY morning's update and consolidation of the incident in Aamulahti and Helsingin Sanomat's International edition reveal that the motivation for the shooting is still not known but that all options remain open for investigation. Local residents, shocked by the incident, say Pizzeria Monaco had friendly employees who made a point of remembering their customer's favourite pizzas. The local online news source '65 Degrees North' was also quoting a `police spokesman' on Sunday as saying "In this case, I wouldn't think that racism is a motive." The gunman and one of his victims are dead. The police say he was not particularly drunk and that the shooting, when it started almost immediately after ordering the pizza about 10.15 pm or 10.30 pm (reports differ), appears to have been `impulsive' with the shooter acting `in a fit of temper'. Police report that the gun used was a handgun stolen in a burglary in Pyhäjoki sometime in November last year (about t he time of his release). To those with knowledge of Finland's national mythology, there are echoes here of the pagan farmer Lalli's brutal 12th century murder of the baptising Bishop Henry in similar fashion on a frozen lake something buried deep within the national psyche as perhaps Finland's first racially motivated murder of a foreigner. These may be to do with the shooter's criminal background and self-proclaimed links on Facebook to a new and expanding organised crime group in Finland known as `The United Brotherhood' (an alliance of three notorious Finnish gangs involved in drugs, violence and fraud and closely monitored by the National Bureau of Investigation). Yet I was still left wondering how, given that neither victims nor perpetrator had as then been spoken to, could one possible motive be so readily `ruled out' in the absence of any evidence of any motive at all at that stage. Another was left in a serious, but stable condition. And the pizzeria owner, also reported as being of immigrant background, fled the scene after being shot at by the gunman. But it seems that there was a willingness very early on to readily sideline, if not dismiss, racism as a motive in favour of alternatives seemingly centred on the possibility of his involvement in organised crime. Given the local community knowledge of such forms of crime and violence that the police would also be aware of, there is surely more cause to readily consider racism as motive than to dismiss it outright from the start. In consequence of the shooting and concerned about a number of threatening incidents that have taken place in Oulu over a short period of time, a group of piz-
twist reported in Tuesday's Helsingin Sanomat International edition was the fact that a board member of the Finns Party's Satakunta district had made a Facebook entry stating that the shooter should be given a medal in reference to the idea that there is a "war" going on. Later reports suggest he was a regular local customer to what is described as a customerfriendly and well-liked pizzeria in the Oulu district of Kaukovaino.
WHAT is known, or at least re-
was any motive at all, it may never be truly known. Yet still, the closer and more effective monitoring of such people, reportedly on parole for the 2006 murder since October 2009, is one that one hopes the authorities might now review. Many people had already lit and laid candles around the shop's doorway. The same goes for the shooter, who had eventually turned the gun on himself and later died as a result. He has worked as a researcher for the Police College of Finland, University of Helsinki (sociology) and as a consultant to the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute. Dr. According to police, though, with the exception of `a few ill-considered actions' the Oulu gunman had been acting `smartly' since his release from prison and not drawing too much attention to himself. In 2006, aged 19, he had brutally bludgeoned to death his friend with an axe on

Week ten for us is not so big, as it's winter break in northern Finland and they have plenty of slopes in Lapland." "Most of our customers are from the greater Helsinki area, nearly 50 per cent, so this week is the busiest. We normally have between 2,700-3,200 skiers a day dur-

Lapland is often seen as the traditional Mecca for hiihtoloma, as the season is longer normally lasting until May or early June. Just perfect," says Jussi Töyrylä, managing director of Levin Matkailu in Levi, near Kittilä in Lapland. Passengers number in the tens of thousands every day. "We have extra night trains on during ski holiday, and extra coaches on the trains too. "Thankfully we have more snow than last year, which was not the perfect year. We have a nice 7075 cm of snow at the moment and a comfortable -5 Celsius outside. Winter break sees Finns in their tens of thousands travel to the ski slopes, in places as far apart as Himos and Levi, for a week away from work or study.
There are about one million active downhill skiers in Finland who spend, on average, six to nine days each year on the slopes of the 79 ski resorts around the country. Rail company VR do overnight specials from Helsinki, Tampere and Turku to Rovaniemi and Kolari and from Helsinki to Oulu and Kemijärvi you can also take your car on the train too. According to many educators in the field, teachers and principals have a hard time getting children and teens who are increasingly accustomed to short-term gratification to commit to and maintain an interest in training courses in music, visual arts, and other such activities that demand patience and commitment.
"Attitudes change; now people typically want quick and easy results," says Heli Tiainen, who, as the director of a national assessment project on basic training in the arts, is well placed to sum up the dominant feeling among teachers in the sector. Finns politician to be booted from the party for praising murderer
Yet another politician from the murkier ranks of the Finns Party has made headlines for the wrong reasons. The worker, a 21-year-old man of Moroccan origin, was shot late on Saturday night by a 24-year-old Finnish man. `Members of the Security Council have a completely different level of information and influence at their disposal than other States,' said Törnudd, who was the UN ambassador when Finland previously held rotating membership of the Security Council in 1989-1990. A further and even more serious problem, according to Tiainen, is that the basic arts education network does not cover the whole country. She was acquitted by the Court of Appeal last summer. Tommi Rautio, a Finns Party councillor from Köyliö in the southwestern Satakunta municipality, suggested on Facebook on Sunday that the murderer of a pizzeria worker in Oulu should be given a medal. According to Seppo Leinonen of the Oulu police, who is leading the investigation, there are no indications that the Saturday night murder was racially motivated or connected with United Brotherhood's criminal activities. Small states immediately notice the great extent to which the five permanent members of the Council the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France focus their wider interactions on matters previously discussed at Council level, Törnudd added. But nonetheless, Tiainen says, input from other fields is needed to cope. After fatally shooting the 21-year-old man of Moroccan origin, the killer then turned the gun on himself, and died later from his wounds. This is 0.4 per cent lower than the same time last year. THE LONG-running court proceedings against Anneli Auer took a new turn
last week when the District Prosecutor filed a host of charges against Auer and her ex-boyfriend. Tiainen believes that with the support of enhanced pedagogical methods and child developmental know-how there are realistic hopes of training in the arts also prospering in the future. There are over 460 institutions in Finland providing basic training in the arts, either for a fee or free. In general, boys are significantly outnumbered by girls on the courses, even though the study found that in the vast majority of institutes serious efforts are made to ensure both sexes are accommodated for and treated fairly. The legal proceeding now underway are not related to the high-profile case in which Auer was suspected of murdering her former husband Jukka S. He is expected to be expelled from the party in the coming weeks. He was a member of the United Brotherhood criminal organisation, and had been released in 2009 after serving less than four years of an eleven-year sentence. One common theme in the responses was the apprehension that arts teachers have about the widespread attitudinal change, with tenacity and long-term ambitions giving way to short-term aims and difficulties in concentrating. An additional difficulty facing basic arts training is that the country's ageing population makes the closure of many arts institutes increasingly likely in the coming years. Both of the accused, who have earlier denied all wrongdoing, have been in custody since last September. The Ministry of Employment and the Economy also released its own findings yesterday, according to which unemployment levels have risen in North Karelia, Central Finland and the island of Åland. This January 203,000 working-age adults were registered as unemployed, 12,000 less than in January 2011. Lahti. `The government should reconsider its economic policy at the earliest opportunity. Over the past two years, the assessment group visited around two dozen of these institutes in various parts of the country and collectditional day and lasts 366 days as opposed to the normal 365. `A war is underway, and in war medals of honour are given out', he added in explanation of his proposal. `Small states thus get a taste of Great Power politics.' "Kid gloves" The chair of the Parliament's Constitutional Law Committee, Johannes Koskinen (SDP), has voiced his dissatisfaction with the handling of the Vehviläinen affair, saying it has been treated "with kid gloves." The former Minister for Justice stated on Sunday that he is highly surprised by the "light touch" of Hautala and Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen (NCP) concerning such "ethically unsustainable practices in companies." "Transparency International's latest report shows that cronyism and institutional corruption demand quick and decisive action from the government," Koskinen said. No specific timetable for drawing up the measures has yet been finalised with Minister Hautala, he said. A similar accident occurred the same day in Kallio, but the victim, a 70-year-old man, escaped with relatively mild injuries to his shoulders and back. According to police, the woman, who was in her early fifties, died at the scene. Hautala hopes that the outcry following Vehviläinen's questionable business dealings will lead to inspections in all companies in which the state has shares. The Institute adds that the risk of roofs collapsing on residential buildings is small, however. According to Uusimaa rescue services, the risk is highest in the downtown Helsinki area. The goal of snowboarders participating in a slopestyle event is to perform the most difficult tricks while getting the highest amplitude off the jumps. However, keeping Afghanistan on this list is contradictory, according to the paper. Parts of the interview published on the paper's website included Wahlroos's views on unemployment. Helsingin Sanomat received dozens of emails disapproving of the fact that Wahlroos gets to express his opinions in the paper in such a visible way. `Halonen's political line as well as her attitude have

UNTIL about a week ago it had felt as if Finland's media had been totally consumed by domestic-election fever for over a year. Some of the commentators on the site considered this criticism of the outgoing president to be in bad taste, both on the part of Wahlroos and the paper. According to the police, the man, aged in his early 20s, didn't, however, cause any danger or threaten anyone. Yet even the 14 million euros the insurance company Sampo Group's Björn Wahlroos gets seem modest in comparison, not to mention the money some stock market gurus earn. Yes and no. Although emphasising different aspects of the election, each make reference to Vladimir Putin's control of conventional media sources but also, with the exception of ESS, his inability to extend this to social media. Events in places further from home also received comment. Helsingin Sanomat has written about the Balkans, Venezuela, US-China relations and Tibet, while French presidential elections made it into Ilta-Sanomat and Oulu's Kaleva editorials, Rovaniemi's Lapin Kansa outlined the issue of mineral exploration in the Arctic, and AL published leaders on Latvia, Iran and German domestic politics. His 80 million-euro dividends are in a league of their own. The shower and kitchen are shared with the other residents. So, with the presidential election over and local elections a whole eight months off, what's going on in the post-election purgatory in which Finland finds itself. In the interview Wahlroos stated that during President Tarja Halonen's two terms in office the institution of the president has suffered. Pseudonyms will be accepted only in exceptional cases. Some experts estimate that as many as 1.65 million people could be HIV-positive by 2015 if current trends persist unabated. Mobs of newly impoverished Greeks took to the streets, setting Athens ablaze and offering yet another spectacle to the international media. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), methadone is an essential substance for treating heroin dependence and preventing HIV transmission by reducing the practice of injecting, but the Russian government's `zero tolerance' approach to illicit drugs has stalled the use of methadone across the country. Various NGOs focused on poverty reduction and homelessness, many of which attacked the mayor on political grounds last month, have since stepped in to fill the state's distribution gaps. ACCORDING to European mainstream economists and politicians, the solution to the Greek debt crisis, and the only option for returning the country to a path of progress, is `fiscal consolidation'. Parliament ushered in the fresh `bout of austerity' on 12 February amid increasing violence across the city. Having taken a salary decrease of over one thousand euro herself, Andriopoulou, a mother of two, decided to join `Doctors of the World', a volunteer team in the remote Athenian district of Perama, which has weathered unemployment rates of nearly 50 per cent since the collapse of the local vessel reconstruction port. ment policies (SAPs) imposed on the country. But for the Greek masses, the word `austerity' has meant the demise of labour, economic and human rights and the dismantling of an inefficient yet crucial social welfare system. "The government's latest crackdown against public health activists has now turned the matter into a violation of our freedom of expression as well," she said. Over the last two weeks, rising homelessness has caused friction between socially active citizens and the municipality, as sub-zero temperatures compelled augent millennium development goals (MDGs) with a deadline of achieving universal treatment by 2015 human rights and health advocates contend that Russia's failure to allow information or services helpful to drug users breaches international human rights and public health laws.

In a last ditch attempt to secure an additional bailout loan of 130 billion dollars from the Troika (a mechanism comprised of the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission), Greece has capitulated to the austerity plan forced

Social exclusion "You can't imagine that this kind of social exclusion exists until you show up there," Andriopoulou says. The latest phase of the plan included cutting 150,000 public sector jobs, overturning existing labour laws, slashing pensions and reducing monthly minimum wages by 20 per cent, from 751 euros to 600 euros. Now, many of the people who show up in public hospitals can't even afford the five-euro general admission fee introduced two years ago. Others believe that even these official statistics are conservative. Thousands of people who have perished over the last few years could have been saved if only the government had allowed proper treatment and prevention programmes, he added. "Greece was a country with universal healthcare. tions of injecting drug users in the world as well as one of the fastest growing HIV epidemics, the dissemination of such information is essential to keep the spread of the virus under control. "For years, human rights advocates like ARF have argued that Russia's colossal failure to provide vital services to drug users is a breach of its obligations under international law to respect, protect and fulfil the right to health," Sarang claims. Since ARF is a grassroots organisation, responding directly to the needs of local people, "the shutdown of the website would likely have a double impact on Russian society," Iakobishvili explains. "Spending your days in a public hospital highlights the degree of social exclusion. An estimated 980,000 people are living with HIV in Russia; in some regions as many as 80 per cent of those with HIV contracted the virus through contaminated needles, Eka Iakobishvili, human rights analyst at the London based Harm Reduction International says. On 8 February, Eurostat published a report estimating that 27.7 per cent of the active workforce, aged 18-64 years old, currently lives on the poverty line. "The first would be to silence the democratic voice that opposes current government policies in health and social justice; and the second would be to deprive thousands of people of vital information on health issues, which the website provides on daily basis." In fact, Lohman believes that the Russian government has exacerbated its country's HIV/AIDS epidemic by cracking down on public discussion on key health interventions. According to several reports, Eastern Europe and Central Asia have the fastest growth rates of HIV in the world, with Russia accounting for between 60-70 per cent of the epidemic.

is "over methadone, plain and simple," explains Anya Sarang, president of the Andrey Rylkov Foundation (ARF) an organisation dedicated to providing health information to intravenous drug users, which had its website shut down in early February. "Moreover, I was surprised to see that most volunteers were unemployed doctors or people under serious financial hardships themselves." "Like many of them, I don't believe in philanthropy, I believe that poverty is a social issue, not the result of bad fate. The rapidly increasing numbers of homeless people sleeping around central Athens prove that this report is not unfounded. Giorgos Apostolopoulos, the deputy mayor responsible for the homeless food centre of Athens' municipality, admitted that over the last few months, urban social infrastructure has been stretched to its limit trying to provide for the needy. Workers under 25 years of age have been asked to take a bigger 30 per cent salary cut. The only response to it is a political one," she added. 26 March 15-17 Preparing for a job interview
What should you think about when preparing for a job interview. The euro, as most modern currencies, derives its value from being officially declared legal tender and the public accepting it as such. He did say that "in general we support the measures taken by the EU to solve the crisis." Most speculation has revolved around Greece leaving the eurozone. "All in all, there is no easy way to adjust within the euro area or outside it," he concludes. Quantitative capital controls are against the basic principles of the European Monetary Union, but may become necessary if the financial situation in a problem country becomes untenable." Attention has also been placed on what could happen to existing contracts, like mortgages denominated in euros
"Impivaara is a true centre of sports. Lauri, only 0.2 metres in depth, is aimed at the smallest of the bunch. "But, of course, the very last expenses have yet to be included in the total", reminds Nummi. "As a facility this big, our aim must be to serve all customer groups well." "In particular, the fact that we have four pools with water temperature above 30 degrees Celsius, instead of the previous one, allows us to better serve families, even with ongoing instructed exercise or programmes," explains Nummi. "Impivaara will remain among the largest in Nordic countries. I believe we have been very progressive in our efforts to develop our services." In addition to the Impivaara Swimming Pool, the Impivaara Sports and Exercise Centre offers an ice hall with two rinks, a soccer hall, grass fields, artificial grass fields, three artificial grass tennis courts, and a fitness path that transforms into a skiing trail during the winters, as well as a privately owned tennis and badminton centre. But we had to postpone work until the end of the year due to problems in the designs." The postponement also overshot the renovation budget by some three million over the initial estimate of 20 million euro. The Olympic-
sized pools the 50-metre, 8-track Venla and the 25-metre, 10-track Juhani provide the perfect setting for water running, sports clubs and swimming schools. The vast locker rooms hold over 800 lockers. Thereby, the facility encourages families to visit and enjoy, and children to develop their swimming skills from an early age. The warm pools, Simeoni, Aapo, Lauri and Timo offer hydro-massage and a four-metre water slide. "And I, as someone with an educational background in culture, was certainly not one to strike a discordant note", she laughs. "Initially, work was to begin earlier in the fall of 2009, and the reopening was scheduled for late 2011. "Overall, Turku is often praised for its highquality sports and exercise services. The pool is 4.5 metres in depth and therefore suited for divers and underwater rugby. "The wonderful work of Sundholm is certain to remain in people's minds and to symbolise Impivaara in the future," praises Mäkelä.
Catering for all tastes However, the modern and extensive facilities within represent the most significant change. Positioned immediately above the entrance, the 6 x 24 -metre piece guides visitors to the welcoming waters of Impivaara. Before reopening, the facility underwent a series of tests, and on 13 February Nummi sounds tired and relieved that the day of reopening was finally at hand. The eight pools vary in water temperature, depth and use. However, such a large project was not entirely without its snags. The facilities The pools and other facilities have been named after the characters and locations of the Aleksis Kivi novel Seven Brothers. After the renovation and expansion, the total pool area of Impivaara is a remarkable 2 250 square metres, divided between eight pools enough to serve a variety of swimmers from the more serious to leisurely, not to mention entire families. There has, however, been no attempt to profile ourselves in any particular fashion." Nummi also mentions that while Turku is not the greatest locus of foreigners, Impivaara also has its share of international visitors. "I have taken a dip in the cold-water pool", he says, "well, in every pool except for the wading pools." Aesthetics Ornamenting the exterior of the renovated facility is the stunning cloud-themed work of art, Taivaan vuohet (Goats of the Sky) by Turku-based artist Ann Sundholm. "In fact, in Turku we often speak of the `spirit of Imppari'." "Previously, the facility attracted some 250-300 000 visits annually. Many used to swim there regularly, always on the same day and at the same time", says Merja Mäkelä, the communications officer of the Sports Services Centre of the City of Turku. The other two are the Kupittaa Sports Arena with, for example, the Veritas Stadium, home of both football teams in Turku, TPS and FC Inter; and the Urheilupuisto-Sports Park with, for example, the Paavo Nurmi Stadium, a disc golf course and the Samppalinna Swimming Stadium on top of the neighbouring hill. If I remember correctly, there is a larger one in Sweden," Nummi says. Located in Northern Turku, some

Impivaara pool reopens in Turku
THE TRADITIONAL Impivaara Indoor Swimming Pool reopened after extensive renovation and expansion on 14 February 2012. "The bottom line is that we are here for everyone. "Testing went according to schedule, and we can finalise the facility for the public", he tells contently, admitting that some personal tests had also been conducted. Naturally, both male and female visitors can select from three saunas.
Oasis of sports Turku takes pride in the entire Impivaara area as one of its three sports and exercise centres. Naturally, we expect that Impivaara will reclaim its status. It is surely an environment where the renovated swimming pool will flourish again.

"Impivaara is an extremely versatile sports centre, verdant in the summer and well-maintained in the winter", Mäkelä touts. Demolition revealed structural deficiencies, which necessitated a return to the drawing board, Nummi reveals. Elsewhere, a dip into the 4-degree water of Eero enhances blood circulation and is soothing after demanding physical exercise. "There were over a hundred workers on site almost all the time," recalls Oskari Nummi, the director of the swimming facilities. In addition, three gyms equipped with cross trainers, treadmills, spinning cycles and ski ergometer, are also at one's disposal for the same entrance fee. But obviously, during certain times of day certain customer groups are highlighted. While not quite largest in the Nordic countries, in terms of pool area Impivaara remains the largest of its kind in Finland. 10

Inside, the spirit of Impivaara has been preserved: wood is still an ever-present element and will bring back memories to the more experienced visitors of Impivaara. THE YEAR 2011 ended with rough weather in Finland. Nevertheless, one in five young people are jobless in Finland. High youth unemployment rate was closely related to the riots in the UK last summer. Does straw rot/mould/spoil. There is no food in straw, so it does not, in itself, interest insects. "Myself and Charlie Jespergaard, my building partner, started working together and after a while came up with the idea of trying to source natural building products. This is straw which is wasted. Building 250,000 homes using a CO2 negative building material, and not such man-made materials as mineral fibres and concrete, has a massive positive effect on the environment," explains Lynch.
Environmental impact For instance, to produce manmade insulation such as mineral fibres, you use synthetic materials like fibreglass, ceramic fibres and stone wool. Stone wool is produced in a furnace at a temperature of about 1600 °C imagine the energy used in this production process. "The idea grew slowly and expanded and now we are five equal-partners: Charlie and myself, Kasper Järnefelt and Kati Juola our two architects and Anders Westerlund, our structural engineer. These days it is usually ploughed back into the ground. It is also important to keep all other running water leading away from the building, but these are basic good construction practices on any site. "It's a business for sure, but it's also something that all the team feels passionate about. "I got involved in this idea a few years back. The Natural Building team. We try to live ecologically, and that in turn includes the place we choose to raise our family in. Moisture is an issue if you do not build correctly. These bales have a load-bearing capacity of about 3 ton per m2 enough to easily be used in a loadbearing straw bale house." "In former times the straw used to be burned by farmers, as it was a waste-product, but environmental concerns have halted this. Helsinki Times talks to a man who is determined to make that dream a reality.

and ecologically sound Irishman's dream is to turn Finland into a haven of ecologically-friendly housing. There must be protective eaves and good roof water systems, protective plaster and high foundations to prevent splash back. The basis of natural building is the need to lessen the environmental impact of buildings, without sacrificing comfort, health or aesthetics. Glass wool or stone wool burn up well before that. The straw is tightly packed and therefore there are no spaces for pests to move or build homes. Any damaged bales must be discarded. But clay plastering the straw keeps moisture so low that the wall does not provide a suitable living environment for fungi and mould spores. Compare this to straw, which is a renewable resource and is positive in its environmental impact during its growth. No, the bales are compressed so tightly that there is limited supply of air for combustion, and the clay/lime plaster acts as a fire retardant. At the moment I'm checking some sensors which I've left there for 12 months to measure moisture and temperature. What about rats/mice/pests. "Things like plumbing, electricity, foundations and roofs are just the same as a regular house. It's no more expensive than a conventional home, but the houses are healthier and the acoustics and aesthetics are amazing. For more info on The Natural Building Company OY check www.naturalbuilding.fi. Sustainability in living should go hand in hand with sustainable building. The bales must be sheltered during the construction period and checked constantly during construction. The thing that I feel strongly about natural building is that you're leaving something to be proud of for future generations. Paul Lynch and his team from the Natural Building Company Oy (NBC), have much greater plans: he reckons the world needs to take the bull by the horns and start eco-building, as well as living. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out. But also, most importantly, it is
CO2 negative, uses a renewable resource in straw, is cost effective and has a very high insulation value. Lime and clay plasters also help suck moisture from the bales and the air inside the house. Clockwise from top, Kasper Järnefelt, Charlie Jespergaard, Anders Westerlund, Kati Juola, Jakub Wihan, a visiting straw bale designer and teacher from the Czech Republic, and Paul Lynch.
The house that Nature built
When the famous architect and educator Frank Lloyd Wright said, `Buildings, too, are children of Earth and Sun,' the legendary man of vision may have been looking ahead to the idea of natural building. We work closely with farmers who bale straw to help them understand that the bales we need are now a building product and should
be compacted to 100-120kg per m3. I was teaching in Helsinki and we were building our house in Inkoo. "The bales are not just the regular straw bales made for animal bedding that are used. Clay plaster will turn ceramic- or tile-like at temperatures over 950 °C. We work with specialists in different areas of natural building in Scandinavia, Estonia and Latvia, and throughout the rest of Europe. Yes, if the building has not been built well and the bales are inserted in the walls while wet. 12 2323 2929 FEBRUARY 2012 12 FEBRUARY 2012

Frequently asked questions
How long will a straw bale building last. You can imagine the delight of farmers when we tell them we will pay them for straw bales packed to the above specifications." "In a study in the UK it has been shown the straw which is cut, but not harvested, every year, could help build up to 250,000 three-bed homes. "Klaus' house was built about 12 years back. The first is a restoration job on an old boathouse from the early 1900s; the second was a check on moisture sensors embedded in the walls of a 12-year-old straw bale house near the restoration job.
The latter is owned by Klaus Salomaa, artist, art teacher and board member of the Woima Foundation the restored boat-house is owned by the foundation and will now serve as a workshop for artists and handicraft workers. This house is a case in point built 12 years ago by another Finnish company who liked the idea of natural building, but they found there wasn't the demand at the time, so they didn't continue building this way." In fairness to Lynch, as well as being a stunning piece of architecture, the house is very, very cosy. Straw bale houses have about three times the insulation value of conventional housing, and surprisingly are extremely fire resistant. In the depths of the recent cold snap, Lynch took me to see two projects he's working on in Jollas, eastern Helsinki. Also clay is not a pleasing material for rodents. It just needs to be rediscovered. When I'm long gone, these houses will still be here, for people to enjoy, admire and feel at home in, and if or when one of these house does come to the end of its life cycle, then it can just return to earth without any long term damage to the nature," says Lynch.
The process of building a straw bale house. But that's just for starters. Natural building is a concept where the building systems and materials used are influenced heavily by sustainability, through durability and use of minimally processed, plentiful or renewable resources. The range of weather over the past 12 months has been great; very harsh winter, dry and hot summer, and a good six weeks' rain at the end of the year," explains Lynch.
Scientific data "The more scientific data we produce, the more people will trust the ideas of natural building. Straw bale constructions are usually finished using a traditional lime mortar or clay plaster. We exchange ideas and skills at seminars and workshops," says Lynch. "Natural building isn't a new concept. We were dismayed at the lack of suppliers, so we decided to set up a net store for people in Finland to be able to source these products. Does it burn easily. The oldest standing straw bale houses are in Nebraska, where the rolling grass plains lacked
timber for construction, and date back to 1904. It is an ecologically-friendly inheritance," says Lynch. The timber frame with straw bales inserted, followed by the buidling with plaster finish, and lastly the final product.. The NBC specialise in a few different areas; the restoration of old buildings using natural materials, design and construction of straw bale homes, clay
and lime plastered finishings, and we give advice and consultation, plus run workshops on all things to do with natural building in Finland and abroad."'
Insulation value Straw bale housing is actually a very good idea in a country that gets as cold as Finland. The oldest straw bale house still in use was built in 1904, so the maximum age cannot yet be determined. I'd worked a lot in building back in Ireland and in the end I enjoyed making things with my hands that much that I decided I would quit teaching and take it up full time," explains Lynch

This is where the concept of a village within a city becomes highly applicable," explains Liukkonen. While most of them host an average of 20 to 30 residents, one recent sustainable living projects plans to exceed this population by over a hundred residents.
A pioneering project About 40 km northwest from Helsinki is situated the construction site of Linnanniittu, also known as Vihti Ecovillage. The head architect and project manager, Matti Liukkonen, believes that this type of building is important in a society where mosaiclike exclusion is becoming increasingly prevalent. An ambitious pilot project, funded by the Uusimaa Region and managed by the Linnanniittu cooperative together with the Vihti municipality, it will hold 90 residences altogether of which 15 will be detached houses. An ecovillage provides individuals not only with a sustainable way of life, but also that important social web. Whereas Aberdeen, like other UK cities, places the car In my hometown, on a pedestal, drivers cyclists are, at best, here generally respect thought to be people in both senses of who can't afford a car. From an evolutionary point of view, we have been hurled with little preparation into the anonymous life of mass urban centres, suburbs and commuter towns. For example, nature is all around, even in the capital region. As Liukkonen ultimately notes, "The movement needs new helping hands in order to grow. In addition to modern and sustainable building techniques, the village will have its own fast-speed internet network. In fact, the village is aiming to distinguish itself from other ecovillages in Finland with its modern approach to sustainability. At the moment the Linnanniittu cooperative is exploring the different opportunities and possible partnerships to join the IEE-
challenge, which requires international cooperation. Although other examples could be used, let's stick with the aforementioned three.
FIRST, while being close to nature is a good initial step to developing an appreciation for the natural world, it isn't the same thing as living in harmony with nature. Hopes are rising that this new culture may spread to become the norm of mainstream living some day. · Do you have a suggestion for a topic that you would like to see featured in the upcoming issues?

Ecovillages: The future of living?
Many see that the breakdown in traditional forms of community are resulting in a breakdown in society. Without taking further steps, it can even inhibit progress, as the mantra of "Finland's unspoiled nature" shows. The technological input comes in from the start, when the future residents design their houses together with the architects using an internet-based program called Talopeli. Some individuals have answered the perennial call and sought a life closer to our roots. Apart from aiming to provide a more ecological alternative in living, the cooperative places strong emphasis in the communal aspect of the village. BUT
not all is rosy in the land of 200,000 lakes. the word the right of others to travel by an alternative means of transport. Unfortunately, even the highly praised Finnish welfare safety-net seems to be riddled with holes. "While for some people Facebook may be enough for a social life, elderly people and families with young children are much more tied to their surrounding neighbourhoods. On the subject of the car, the way talk of a congestion charge for the capital region is vehemently attacked in some quarters makes you start to appreciate the Finns' love affair with this vehicle. Recycling is also well developed, with facilities having to be provided wherever a set amount of people live. As for recycling, while it's easy to recycle paper and cardboard, recycling glass is a bit of a hassle and metal often near impossible if you don't have a car or an enlightened housing association. The village will hold an eco-park surrounding a pond with a communal garden, some pasture land for animals, a meadow, a barn, and a smoke sauna. FINLAND definitely has a lot to commend it. The social problems present in modern societies may also reflect the rapid change of our lifestyles. "Coupled with governmental initiatives, such as the IEEprogramme, the promotion of an ecological lifestyle in the form of ecovillages would be much more efficient, than having separate small entities working on their own," Liukkonen adds. The project is partially funded by Uusimaa Region and is managed by the Linnanniittu cooperative.
Allan Bain allan@helsinkitimes.fi The writer likes to think of himself as someone who does his bit for the planet, but he's by no means perfect.
Have your say
· What did you think of the topics discussed in this ecological living themed issue. "The realisation of the central area, however, depends on us finding sufficient funds to build it," Liukkonen says, adding that the project is still in a trial phase, with only a handful of detached houses ready or under construction. In my hometown, cyclists are, at best, thought to be people who can't afford a car. More commonly, drivers simply think they're pests who needlessly endanger themselves and motorists by cycling on the road (n.b. Back in the real world, as many car journeys as possible should ultimately be swapped for train journeys (or failing that, bus journeys), but despite the rail company VR's recent change in its pricing policy, it still makes more financial sense for a family to drive around the country than to hop on a train. In addition to this, the cooperative has planned a central area that will include a home for the elderly, a children's daycare centre, a café, an organic food shop, and woodwork and artist workspace. MAYBE I shouldn't have been quite so quick to presume Finland's level of ecological sensibility after all, but thankfully the country is far from a lost cause.
99 per cent of our existence as a species, we humans trod the Earth with a feather-light carbon footprint, lived in close-knit communities of 15-50 individuals where all knew each other and shared or exchanged our resources in a `gift economy'. However, ecovillages in the UK have reported their energy consumption to be as much as 40 per cent lower than their regular counterparts. Ecological building emphasises the use of naturally occurring resources in heating, ventilation, and cooling. Therefore, the concept of living in a community with like-minded people, in an ecologically sustainable and self-sufficient way, strikes a primordial chord in our psyche. The buildings are constructed from sustainable, durable, recyclable and healthy materials, and often designed according to the inhabitants' wishes. Another thing is how extremely pedestrian and cyclist-friendly Finland is, though less so outside the bigger cities. They are commonly characterised by shared values, resources and facilities, a community-centred life, self-sufficiency (to some degree), and sustainably built housing, which is known to be a more environmentally friendly method. Furthermore, there's the fantastic refund system at supermarkets for bottles. Finland, for one, struggles with finding an adequate workforce for elderly care, while organisations and institutions have to scrape for funds to combat youth alienation and to provide support for people with drug dependency and mental health problems. Among the numerous nationalities represented in the society, Finns outnumbered Scots by something like a ratio of 2:1.

"If the central area materialises, it will also have its own power plant, which will produce electricity and heat from woodchips and solar energy."
A fair share of the ecological aspect in the village is covered by technology. The movement is still in a budding stage, and the ideal, a fully-sustainable ecovillage, has yet to be built. Liukkonen believes that such collaboration will be essential considering the future of eco-building. Small communities have ceased to provide the support network our species is used to having, so the state has had to step in to provide one. A common programme on ecological consumption and lifestyle in ecovilllages and in their surrounding areas may prove to be crucial. Although their number is steadily rising, there are still only a few dozen ecovillages in Finland. "In the end, however, the most energy-efficient solutions are based in the communal aspect of the village," Liukkonen says, referring to the shared energy solutions, resources, and services.
A movement in need of a boost Initiatives, such as the EU's Intelligent Energy Europe programme (IEE) that allocates funds for projects aiming to improve energy efficiency and to reduce emissions, are an important incentive for projects, such as the Linnanniittu ecovillage. Apart from showing the different architectural possibilities of the house, the program allows the residents to keep a close eye on the building expenses. Any volunteers?"

Residents help in the planning process of building the homes.. Former prime minister Matti Vanhanen claimed last year that him living in Nurmijärvi (more than 30 km from Helsinki) won't pose any real environmental obstacle in less than 10 years' time due to technological advancement. After completing my degree, it was time to find out. A report published by the Gaia Trust in 1991 first used the term "ecovillage" to refer to sustainable communities, and since then the name has been applied to many such communities.

This latest innovation will replace the annual diesel consumption of almost fifty buses, meaning a CO 2 emissions reduction of many tonnes a year. The objective is a marked reduction in emissions levels, which is not possible without new technology, the best fuels, and more extensive use of electricity as a power source. As part of the extensive renovations, the vicinity of the station will also be cleaned up and more parking spaces and bike spaces will be added. The type of fuel used is the most decisive factor in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The aim is to ensure the safety of both passengers and staff; everyone has the right to travel and work on public transport without fear of violence or harassment. This division of labour reduces both noise and CO2 levels. The diesel engine is turned off at bus stops and at traffic lights, and the electric motor gets the bus moving again. Emergency calls will be directed to a centrally managed control room. The restaurant at Korkeasaari serves lunch, but facilities are also available between 11.00 and 15.00 for heating your own food.. In addition to seeing the winter lives of the animals, you can also admire the carved ice sculptures of the Art Meets Ice competition. The lighter weight of the vehicles brings significant cuts in fuel consumption, and consequently also in emissions. The station will get a new and more spacious ticket hall and two new escalators. The lifts will also be replaced, as will the lighting furnishings and surfaces in the whole station. In all, 1250 HSL buses operate in the Helsinki region every weekday, of which about a hundred run on natural gas.
Improving public transport safety
A new safety strategy has been created for HSL area public transport. From next autumn on, around half of HSL bus traffic will operate with vehicles that meet the European Union's emissions standards for Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicles.
Light buses use less
The first two hybrid buses to be taken into use in the capital region will begin running early this year. Also onboard camera surveillance will be increased.
Siilitie metro station under renovation
Extensive renovations on Siilitie metro station will begin from the start of March. They use thirty per cent less fuel than the traditional diesel buses, with a corresponding reduction in carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions. buses to run solely on electricity will be tested later this year. During this year, drivers will get alarm buttons. The batteries of the electric motor are charged when braking. HSL will draw up safety instructions for passengers. The first bus leaves for Korkeasaari at 9.40, and the last bus back from the zoo to the City Centre leaves at 16.15. Guards will continue to be present at key terminals and stations especially on weekend nights, and onboard patrols will be increased. In August HSL will add 52 lightweight buses to its fleet. When tendering bus services, HSL requires that both old and new buses are equipped with a driver safety cabin. Onboard safety equipment will be increased. 16

ONCE , when asked to compare his experiences of Tampere and Helsinki, Green Party MP Oras Tynkkynen indirectly commented that there isn't a trace of snobbishness or pomposity in Tampere. For those with less of an interest in political history, however, Pispala is still worth a visit, as its elevated location offers an excellent view of Tampere's lakes.
Yrjönkatu Just short of a kilometre long, Helsinki's Yrjönkatu runs from Ullanlinna through Punavuori and Kaartikaupunki to Kamppi. This observation is a telling one, as some of the most interesting features of Tampere are related to the city's links to industrialism and working-class movements: even the city's nickname, Manse, is a nod to that more famous centre of industrialisation, Manchester, England. Architecturally, Tampere shares much with other Finnish cities, but red brick is more visible here than elsewhere in the country. My work contract finished up and now is the time I can learn Swedish," says Fernando. When founded in 1820, the street was originally given the Swesidh name of Sankt Georgs Gatan, but the prefix was soon dropped. The Russian government reinstated the practice of awarding the medals in the late 1990s. Ice-hole dunking at the latter is an optional extra. There are over 600 courses at Arbis and they vary in length and start at different times
throughout the year," continues Ramsay. The Order's medals of honour were treasured, and up until the Russian Revolution were awarded to soldiers for bravery. Arbis has two centres in Helsinki one in Dagmarinkatu in Etu-Töölö and one at Turunlinnantie at Itäkeskus covering both sides of the city. Arbis also offers very practical courses like the hygiene pass, which can be useful when you are looking for a job. Alexandra Ramsay, Planning Teacher at Arbis, explains, "We are a municipal school and Helsinki City is very helpful with our funding. The teaching programme here includes about 18 different languages, art and handicraft, physical exercise and dance, ICT, music, domestic science, environmental studies, etc.
Practical courses "Also the Arbis Open University offers adults the opportunity to attend degree-level courses in, for example, pedagogics, philosophy, sociology and psychology. The red-brick buildings that dominate the city centre are largely courtesy of James Finlayson and the textile company he founded in the 1820s. For art lovers there's Tampere Art Museum, the Sara Hildén Art Museum and Hiekka Art Museum, while there's plenty of musical goings-on, such as Tampere Jazz Happening every November and the urban city festival Tammerfest in summer. This course is offered in English in March, as a joint venture with the association Luckan/Bridge in Helsinki. George, which was founded in 1769 by Tsarina Catherine II in honour of the saints and martyrs of Christendom. The Swedish for parents is two-thirds funded by the city, so the price is not prohibitive."
"The course is intensive, but we also run courses for absolute beginners. · Less obvious gems include the Pyynikki Observation Tower, where, after having had a look at the city, you can enjoy an incredibly tasty doughnut or five in the downstairs café (vegan doughnuts available). Although Tampere is no longer a centre of left-wing activity, some of this legacy remains in the form of the city's Lenin museum, multiple references to the famous left-leaning author Väinö Linna, and in the district of Pispala, where the defeat of Tampere's red forces in 1918 is commemorated. This is arguably
the city's greatest asset, but there's a lot more to recommend it than simply this. As the name suggests, the Tampere Film Festival, the oldest short-film festival in the Nordic Countries, also takes place in the city. Located between two big lakes, Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi, Tampere is home to around 215,000 people, making it the biggest inland city in the entire Nordic region as well as Finland's third-largest city after Helsinki and Espoo. The street is named after the Order of St. But since I'm married to a Swedishspeaking Finn I've started to learn Swedish also. Politically, Tampere is notable for the role it played in
the general strike of 1905 and the country's civil war in 1918, when it was a red stronghold. Childcare is included, so parents who might not normally be able to attend classes during the day can attend with their child, or children.

Sure, it's a simple enough transaction: head to a pub, shout bisse, olut, kolmonen, keski, pitkä or kalja to the person behind the bar and you're sure to find something wet and amber in your glass before long. Thankfully, the open kitchen spectacle at Putte's proves to be nothing less than a delight to follow. An example of the delicious pizza served at Putte's.

The open kitchen concept works well at Putte's. KITCHEN 11-23 FRI 11-02 . Occupied by hipsters and the after-work crowd, the sparsely decorated industrial-themed room gives off an air of being halfway through the process of renovation, but that seems to be the desired effect. Firstly the barman will set about pressing a button next to the beer tap, and your glass, held at an appropriate angle by a metal stand at its base, will begin to fill automatically, with its freshly dispensed contents halting a number of centimetres from its rim. Meanwhile though, I'd recommend a bottled beer to pass the time.

the stresses of the day can thankfully subside for a moment or two, is entirely down to the luck of the draw here. Will there be any head whatsoever. me another, which is unfortunately the same again. It is almost mesmerising to watch as the pizza cook prepares each recipe, hands shifting between ingredients before turning to wield a long spatula with which to lift the pies in and out of the cavernous oven. I look up and the pizza cook continues shovelling pizzas in and out of the oven as my plate empties.
Pizza on show Having an open kitchen can be a dangerous proposition. Sure, the idea is great: customers can watch their food being fried and boiled and baked and roasted. Suck it up and knock it back, or attempt to ask for another. Hmm. Those who stay can enjoy the parade of people passing along Kalevankatu outside the window, as they wait for Putte's downstairs bar area to open, where a revolving array of DJs spins discs into the wee hours. WELCOME AMIGOS!
SOMETIMES buying a beer in Finland is not as easy as you'd like it to be. I take a bite: superb crispy base, tangy tomato sauce, the crunch of the walnuts complementing the creamy texture and bite of the pungent cheese. Tucked around the corner from Mannerheimentie, all the downtown districts of note are within arm's reach if you decide to kick on into the night after your pizza and drinks. And so, after shelling out 5.50 euros and taking a sip at Putte's Bar and Pizza, I have a Lapin Kulta standing meekly before me that unfortunately resembles something akin to flavoured water. What to do. But it's after ordering that things often start to differ from experiences found in other countries. Will it have any hint of effervescence. Before long the disappointment of my deflated beer is a distant memory as I survey the delicious concoc-
Waiting to hit the decks Now, aside from the ongoing show at the pizza oven, one of the other positive things about Putte's is its location. And so, returning to the bar to enquire just what had happened to my drink's joie de vivre, I get a quizzical expression from the barman as he explains that he has served the same to at least ten customers without incident

Blinis have gone from peasant staple to upscale cuisine.
NICK BARLOW HEL SINKI TIMES
ONCE a peasant food amongst
ancient Slavic peoples, the humble blini has become something of a posh treat for the average diner. Similar to pancakes but thicker, and made with yeast and buckwheat, blini are traditionally served with smetana, onion and caviar, which, due to the fish roe's high price, perhaps accounts for their upmarket image. f i. The main irritation, ambience-wise, was the music playlist, which veered from reasonably sophisticated-sounding classical to panpipe classics of 1980s pop hits. The inside is more French bistro-cumsteakhouse than stronghold, however, and it's a fairly cosy place for a cold winter's afternoon of buckwheat pancake scoffing.

nations. Considering the cheapest fish option is 18,50 per blini, and in the buffet you get an impressive and tasty spread of eight different Finnish fish, white fish roe, honey, gherkins, and so on, it's not a bad deal. With prices for a single blini from 13,20 for the vegetarian alternatives to 19,50 with moose fillet or up to 24,50 for the most expensive fish option (a selection of four fish roes) this is not necessarily a food choice for the budget-conscious, but it is good if you're wanting to treat yourself. As the name suggests, the establishment is housed in an imposing grey granite building, looking not unlike a castle or the fortress of an evil necromancer. Delivered sizzling to the table, it was thick and filling. The requisite crisp exterior with
fluffy insides was, if not the best variant I've ever tasted, then at least one of the better ones. 20

WHENEVER I meet someone new, sooner or later the topic of my American heritage comes up, and I always admit it accompanied with my humblest apologies. The ideal of progressiveness is a powerful undercurrent within the United States, and as an American and as a European I am delighted to see this undercurrent strengthening its position in peoples' hearts and minds. Market halls. Wanha Kauppahalli ("Old Market Hall") at the Market Square and Hakaniemen Kauppahalli ("Hakaniemi Market Hall") are the most popular. Internet. Despite my roots, I do not feel American, but then again, neither do I feel Finnish. As our globalised society becomes ever more transparent through intensified international cooperation between countries and the connection of individual people through social media, multicultural people have the best chances to adapt and affect the changing, broadening scope of global society. Although the impact of my two votes alone is small, through them my slight ability to make an impact on a global scale becomes tangible. In this series expatriates write about their lives in Finland.. Although I've always lived in Finland, half of my genome is from the United States, and thus both worlds have always been an essential part of my life. In a number of Finnish towns public internet posts are quite rare due to extensive per-person internet use at home. Apologising for being partly American is an amusing quip, but throughout most of the world, it is not uncalled for. Most grocery stores are open Mon-Fri 7-21, Sat 7-18 and Sun 12-21. Working Life theme in March Helsinki Times will have a Working Life themed issue again on 15 March. While the European view of a stereotypical American a loud, obnoxious child poking an anthill is a caricature,
it is not a wholly undeserved one. In just one year, we have not only experienced the power to express we have also grasped the power to affect. The big-brotherly philosophy of US foreign policy throughout the decades has been enough to fill the rest of the world with mild resentment at the very least. However (and I need to keep reminding myself of this as well) the stereotype we all love to hate is only the loudest sect of US society it is by no means the only one and hopefully not the largest one.
