Interestingly, the sites of other recent major protests have also
been held on maidans: Tavisuplebis Moedani (Freedom
Square) in Tbilisi, Midan Tahrir (Tahrir Square) in Cairo,
and Taksim Meydan. There is no reason
why the situation in Ukraine
should spiral into widespread
civil conflict. This
act served as the catalyst
for getting the Euromaidan
movement off the ground.
Between the end of November and the end of January
when I left Ukraine for Finland I visited Maidan many
times. There were even a couple
protesters waving American
flags. My own nose
confirmed this upon arrival
in Helsinki.
Most of the protesters were
not from Kiev, and most of
those were from Western
Ukraine, as was visible by
the names of towns and villages written on their flags.
This has been backed up in
surveys done by the Kiev International Institute of Soci-

armed militias, an aggressive Russia, and a central government with no control over

been marked by corruption

no reason to believe that this
time will be any different.
Extremists
Ukraine?s political crisis can
only be solved by Ukrainians and only from within the
country. While many people in the beginning waved
EU flags, it was done as a
symbol for a better standard
of living, not to support the
free trade agreements and
austerity measures on offer. However, all regions of
the country were represented, even Crimea, so it is unfair to label Euromaidan as
a purely Western Ukrainian
movement.

broke up the protests, beating mostly unarmed students and journalists. Even during these dangerous times,
or maybe especially during
them, one eye should be firmly kept on the maneuverings
of the government in Kiev, the
candidates in next month?s
presidential elections, and
most importantly, the oligarchs and financial groups
linked to these figures. Literally

at hand involves history and

Vartiainen: SDP has succumbed to its own success
Glory days
While the SDP flourished,
Finland built its compulsory school, day care and social welfare systems. The SDP
simply refuses to concede
that Finland can no longer afford it all.
In addition to its past,
the SDP is haunted by its ties
with the labour movement,
adds Vartiainen.
?The labour movement is a
discordant movement that has
a rather limited institutional
capacity to take into consideration the interest of the entire
nation. After hearing [the news] this morning, I almost

In addition, the SDP is
pestered by a lack of courage:
the party has even been unable to take credit for the fact
that Finland is packed with
its supporters, points out
Vartiainen.
To an extent, such inefficiency is understandable,
he nonetheless acknowledges. ?Without
immigrants, we don?t have
the necessary workforce,?
Vartiainen says, referring to
the pursuit of the Ministry of
Employment and the Economy of an increase of 200,000
in employment.
Although it is widely acknowledged that Finland needs immigrants, employment-based immigration remains a taboo for the Social
Democratic Party, views Vartiainen.
JUHANA Vartiainen,
the director general at the Government Institute for Economic

In 16 such investigations, the

Investigations into rapes

in 8 investigations under 15.

The offences occurred in

The incident is investigated as criminal mischief, two
counts of aggravated negligent homicide and grossly
negligent bodily injury. The firearms,
the preliminary investigation suggests, have been stolen between 2000 and 2014.

After taking up a managerial position in an expert organisation, Kai soon realised
the firm was led by an incompetent boss, whose behaviour and management
style were unpredictable and
whimsical.

Sometimes,
having

Kai also learnt quickly not

?I?m sure that people with
such megalomaniac characteristics can be found in

The company?s top management is often blind to the

Tienari also points out
that, as in other things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder also in matters to do with

not go according to plan.

An incompetent boss
turns a deaf ear to
employees. Finnish bosses are
interested in what employees are doing and achieving
in their work, rather than focussing on titles and family
background.?
Managing to improve
Over the last decade, there
has also been a clear improvement in management
skills as education on the
topic has become more com-
mon. He?d
get worked up if something
was decided without consulting him first.?
?He wanted to keep tabs
on what employees were
up to any given minute, not
trusting them to prioritise
their tasks.?
Leading
by poor example
Ari Rämö, a business leader and an author of a book on
leadership, says that the experiences of Satu and Kai illustrate what leadership is at
its worst.
With plenty of experience
in managing organisations of
various sizes, Rämö currently heads Sick Oy, a company
providing sensors and sensor solutions, which has been
elected among the top three
workplaces in Finland several years running.
?A bad boss thinks that
others are there for him. work
performance was evaluated
solely on the basis of figures.
?People came up with
tricks to make figures look
pretty.?
In the end, scared of garnering the boss?s wrath, employees also manipulated the
performance figures.
?You are given what you
ask for. he explains.
?People don?t care and
don?t strive to improve
things,. views
An incompetent boss thinks the whole organisation revolves around him
and can also get away with his behaviour as the top management is not
aware of it, or only cares about the company?s performance figures.
M a r ia M u st r anta . ?They
just get through the days and
do the bare minimum.?
In Kai?s company, the boss
created an atmosphere of
fear, pushing many to look for
new work. ?Business management
is more professional these
days, with people placing
more emphasis on it, wanting to get better.?
Even though in some
studies, bosses get lambasted for their lack of leadership
skills, there are also surveys
that paint a different picture.
The annual working condition barometer by the Ministry of Employment and the
Economy reveals that transparent information flow and
equal treatment of employees have improved in workplaces in the 2000s.
In the 2013 barometer,
more than 80 per cent of employees said that their boss
treated employees in a fair
manner and asked for employees. says Rämö.
Satu assumes the top
management of her company
was none the wiser about her
superior?s behaviour.
?His own bosses were
abroad and weren?t aware of
how unhappy people were.
As long as figures look good,
they are pleased with the
way things are.?
Kai believes that one reason behind poor leadership
skills is that power is intoxicating and makes people
blind to their own failings.
He thinks his managing director?s rapid rise to high-powered positions is partly to blame
for his narcissistic behaviour as
it meant he had never been in a
junior position himself. He
doesn?t realise that it?s his
job to motivate people and
ensure good working conditions, not keep employees in
their place.?
A common problem in
workplaces is a boss who
does not allow subordinates
to make decisions and ignores their opinions and
ideas.
Janne Tienari, professor
of business management at
Aalto University, says that
the list of management blunders also includes continual
organisational reorganisations and bosses covering up
for their own mistakes and
over-emphasising their position and all the trappings
that come with it.
Griping about bosses may
be a popular coffee-break
pastime, but dissatisfaction
with business management?s
leadership skills is a topic
that also regularly crops up
in studies.
In a survey of more than a
thousand 18-to-74-year olds
carried out by the insurance
company If in 2012, up to 39
per cent of people mentioned
poor management as one of
the problems plaguing their
workplace.
Trade Union Pro found in
its survey conducted in 2013
that 43 per cent of employees
did not feel that the managers
of the company they worked
for were knowledgeable or
showed great judgement.
Roughly 10,000 professionals
participated in the study.
Baffling rise
Employees are often baffled
by how unsuitable people
can rise to top positions and
manage to hold on to their
jobs.
One explanation is that
bad leaders appoint other incompetent managers.
?People tend to pick
younger versions of themselves as their successors.
It?s fun to work with people
who are similar to you,. H S
N iina W o o lley . Then you get a
boss who thinks he?s the centre of the universe.?
Manage the
consequences
What are then the consequences of bad management?
According to Tienari,
there may not be any consequences. lack of motivation,. Rämö remarks. Employees who dared to express an
opinion that did not go down
well with the boss would find
themselves at the receiving
end of the silent treatment.
On occasions when disagreements cropped up, the
boss overrode all objections,
without justifying his views
in any way

mean if I had not helped. And
how do you know when the
spaghetti is ready. She would focus in class,
get good grades in subjects
other than languages, and
learn how to pay the bills and
clean. Tilli was good at languages . My psychologist
worked hard to assure me
that not everyone needs to
know the details of the World
Wars. They also should not be
forced to eat at the table if it
makes the child anxious. My friends know that
a planned routine is important to me so that my plan
for the day does not collapse.
They understand logically
why I burst into tears if my
home assistant is replaced by
another assistant. Tilli says.
Following rules was important to Tilli even as a child.
She took everything literally.
Now Tilli was confused: how
does one know when to help?
Why was she told to be kind,
but when she did so it was
suddenly wrong?
Tilli?s book contains dozens of similar examples.
?People?s
opinions,
modes of behaviour and
body language are strange,
and I could not fathom the
thoughts behind them. It is
only a habit someone came
up with! The most important
thing is to eat.
Bread for bullies

Not known for?
Paula is interested in languages, psychology and health education. I did not
become normal at school.
I learned that I am not
normal.?
Tilli is not bitter, though.
She believes that she has received the best help she could
get.
?Back then, neuropsychological diagnoses were not
recognised. Tilli says.
Visible awareness
She has often wondered if it
would be easier if Asperger
were visible to others.
?I am often expected to
know more things than I do.
How do you explain to someone new that a normal looking and talkative woman
such as myself is on pension
and cannot clean her home,
but needs an assistant. According to medical terms Asperger is a developmental disorder but Tilli considers it a neurological deviance. these are
the Asperger features the
psychologist listed.
?I had consulted a psychologist because I wanted advice on how to become
normal. She liked to spend recesses alone, and this concerned the teacher. Gives lectures on Asperger syndrome. It made me feel bad
because I often tried my best.
I was told that if bothered to
try I would be able to do it. in high school she
studied seven languages ?
but the events of the World
Wars escaped her. At times the
teacher got angry and yelled
at me for not being able to insert the thread in the sewing
machine. Her audiences include
doctors, psychologists, teachers, people diagnosed with
Asperger and their close ones.
Someone always asks the
same question: what should
one do with an Asperger
child?
?Accept them for who
they are,. The whole table burst out
laughing.
The teacher thought Tilli was too kind. Her home was a
mess because she could not
figure out where each object was supposed to go. Is it not fairer to be direct. She
misses half of it, despite
straining herself.
?A 20-something should
be able to do this. I was desperate,. She
suspected that regular work
might not be possible at all.
No one was supposed to get
so intensely tired.
The psychologist sent Tilli
for Asperger tests.
?I had imagined that everyone gets tired from work.
And no one likes to clean!
Then I was told that there are
varying degrees. She
did. She enjoyed being abroad. From
Espoo, but lived in Stockholm for 13 years.
Known for?
Wrote the book Toisin: minun Asperger-elämäni. Besides, one enters
school to learn to be sociable.
?Why do people need to

temper. H S
niina w o o ley . Sometimes even planning a shopping list was so exhausting
that Tilli had to go to bed.
She told the university
that she would not continue
her studies.
?I was hugely disappointed that I could not perform
normal tasks at an adult age.
I figured that this was no way
to live,. Yet others
are still able to brush their
hair even if they claim to be
tired. It is always worth trying, how else will you know
what you will be passionate
about. Or
cold on the spaghetti. But they
cannot identify with this
feeling,. One should not
have to play with others if
being alone is more enjoyable. How odd,?
madam snaps, and prepares
the food herself.
Tilli considers it odd too.
Why are things that are easy
for some so difficult for her?
Four years later Tilli is
provided with an answer. The teacher had previously said that it is friendly
to help others. Limited routines,
exceptionally strong interest
in certain subjects, but also difficulty in learning other things and problems with
communication . This is
the diagnosis that Tilli received in 2003 at age 24.
The
characteristics
matched. But no one should be
forced.?
Tilli no longer forces herself to conform to so-called
normal behaviour, so that
others would perceive her
as normal. I was an easy victim. It often yielded a six.
This was not good, but not
bad enough to make someone
question whether there was
another reason behind her
poor grades than laziness.
Many years were wasted. Allow the child
to read timetables at home if
they enjoy it more than football. Learn to defend yourself, the teacher
instructed.
?I did not deem it odd that
I would get bread for my bullies. The same applies vice
versa. She does not know
how to clean her house or when the Second World War took place.
She believes that forcing one into norms is the worst.
heid i vä ä r ä m ä ki . Based on this, the teachers thought she should have
also learnt art and history.
?When I did not, I was
considered lazy. I did not know who Madonna was or laugh at jokes.?
Tilli considered watching
TV boring and she did not understand the point of group
games. Instead
I could have focused on the
subjects I was good at and
could have improved in.?
At this point Tilli is often
told that schools cannot be
tailored to suit everyone?s
needs. This
provokes people. I
started to believe it myself.?
The same continued in
lower and upper secondary
school. Paula
loves routines.. I have learned that
someone may get angry if I
tell them straight away that I
do not want them to visit because I do not have the energy to be with them for the
entire weekend. This is what Tilli thinks of
school now.
?I learned nothing at
school that I could not have
learnt at home faster.?
Tilli does not want to generalise on how schools should
approach Asperger children.
They are all different.
Homeschooling
would
have been most appropriate
for her, for others it may not
work.
If it were up to Tilli, she
would increase the flexibility
of comprehensive school.
?The strengths and interests of people should be
better taken into account.
Different subjects could be
taught extensively in elementary school but it is
worth questioning whether
everyone should study everything. And that cleaning did
in fact strain my brains more
than grammar

HEL SINK I TIMES
THE FINNISH Museum of Horology is a venue specialised in the history of clocks,
watches and time measuring.
It features an incredible collection of about 6,000 watches from the 17th century to
the present.
Those interested in learning more about the mysterious history of time
measurement should definitely pay a visit to Tapiola?s
WeeGee Exhibition Centre.
In fact, the venue hosts the
Finnish Museum of Horology, a museum that focuses on
all this, as well as on the tools
and materials associated with
the occupation of the watchmaker. ?The mystery of time

The venue?s main aims are
to study and collect watches

Sadly I couldn?t eat the lovely pasta dish my friend prepared, but I decided to bend
the rules a bit and eat an organic vegetable soup for dinner; it just felt rude not to
eat with my friends. Naturally, deepfried okra is good, just like
deep-fried anything is good.
But okra isn?t enough of a

fried okra an exceptional

tire and become faint. Friends
and colleagues have described
memories of okra that was
sulfurous and slimy and yet
left a cottony feeling on their
tongues and gums. Now I remember
why it was consigned to the

Billowing clouds of ash swallow the ancient Roman town
and fireballs rain down from

into the sea and a tsunami

. the movie is completely absorbing. Most
of the movie is taken up by
scene after scene of gladiatorial games, but when Milo isn?t fighting, he?s sharing
passionate looks with Cassia
and steely glares with Corvus.
None of this really matters once the ground begins to shake and Vesuvius
wakes from its slumber. Finally, Hokus Pokus Alfons Åberg offers some Swedish animation for the little ones. Anderson,
best known for the Resident
Evil franchise and 2011?s The
Three Musketeers, creates harrowing simulations of the disaster. Milo could be
a star if he weren?t stuck in
provincial Londinium.
And so he?s sent to Pompeii. Having released
their early masterpiece The Holy Bible the previous year, the
three-legged dog soldiered on
with the smash hit album Everything Must Go in 1996.
Superstardom followed
two years later with This Is
My Truth Tell Me Yours, armed
with the huge singles If You
Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next and You
Stole The Sun From My Heart,
which made waves around
the globe.
Subsequent years have
seen the trio of James Dean
Bradfield (lead vocals, lead
guitar), Nicky Wire (bass guitar, lyrics) and Sean Moore
(drums) see a decline in album sales, yet no less a dip
in quality of their recordings.
Last seen in Finland in
2011 at Wanaja Festival in Hä-
meenlinna, the band arrives
at The Circus on Wednesday
7 May for a gig in support of
last year?s well-received Rewind the Film.

daughter of a powerful politician, and notices that the
two people he?d most like to
kill . Yet his first starring
role doesn?t showcase what he
can do from an acting standpoint. Yves Saint Laurent gets a self-titled biopic, with Finnish ?70s guitar hero Jukka Tolonen the focus of a documentary. A
Thousand Times Goodnight brings the drama, with Juliette Binoche?s photojournalist having to decide between the rigours of war
journalism and her family. To
make matters worse, Corvus
has his eye on Cassia. It?s enough to make you
want him to ditch the story altogether, because as soon as
we?re back on the ground with
Corvus in a chariot chased by
Milo, some of the images are
so clearly computer-generated that the drama drains right
out of the moment.

WHILE the act of lyricist/guitarist Richey James carving

cases you have a warrior
who?s enslaved after his family is murdered. In fact,
one can read the first verse
of Saadi?s Gulistan in the en-
trance of the United Nations
Hall of Nations in New York.
Regarding the Gulistan,
Hämeen-Anttila explained
that it?s a book that ?tries to
entertain and teach moral
and despite the time when it
was published, Saadi?s teachings are completely relevant
nowadays because human
nature hasn?t changed in seven centuries.?
Practical approach
The main lecturer of the

he turns out to have an exceptional talent for killing
people, he befriends an African gladiator and he falls in
love with a woman leagues
above his social standing.
But only in Pompeii does
the protagonist talk to horses. He also
explained that Iranian people
read, study and follow Saadi?s
principles in their daily lives.
However, Ahmadi drew
attention to an unknown
side of Saadi?s works: the
mysticism.
?Saadi has been mainly the subject of discussions
about his eloquent language,
attractive poetry, stories
on social customs and habits, and services he rendered
to the Persian language and
Iranian-Islamic culture, but
Saadi?s lofty position in mysticism has rarely been enhanced?, assured the scholar.
?Mysticism is seen in
many of Saadi?s poems and
it is necessary to review his
works from this point of view
in order to introduce him as a
mystic figure besides a contributor to the Persian language and culture,. on 25 April

After the lecturers and
a lively discussion about
Saadi?s life and work, the Iranian musician Hamid Gerami Shirazi sang one of
Saadi?s sonets accompanied

the character developments
in those movies look pretty good compared with the
scant dialogue and simplistic
personalities in Milo?s world.
That being said, Pompeii
does Emmerich one better in
the special effects department. Harington transformed
his body for the role, but here?s
the real disaster: his startlingly defined six-pack abs are the
most memorable part of his
character.

Irish student Sean Ryan was recently here on an internship.
Falling for Finland
Before I came to Finland I
was expecting mountains
of snow, freezing temperatures and dour people. The city itself is beautiful. Our little group
has been to quite a few of the
pubs and the nightclubs and
they have all been incredible. I live in the
countryside in Ireland and the
peace and quiet is one of the
things I treasure. The sports bars
we went into to watch the
Champions League games
were incredible. The people
were very nice and helpful. The differences are truly incredible,
but that is what makes Helsinki a wonderful city and
place to live. If
my friends or I needed something or directions, the staff
in the hotel were very helpful
and after a bit of a mix up with
the rooms they gave us a free
drink to compensate!
The weather has been
lovely since we arrived, far
from the dark and freezing
temperatures I was expecting. In Finland I have
seen children on the tram on
their own everyday. I was expecting snow,
but on the first day we had
glorious sunshine. I think
it?s wonderful that people
have enough trust in each
other to be able to allow their
children out around the town
on their own.
But the main reason that I
fell in love with this city from
day one has to be the way it is
like a mixture of a proper city
and yet has the quietness of
the countryside. Success of the largest chain
of spas in China, Liangtse, continues in Europe. CLASSIFIEDS & SERVICES

1 . The temperatures are quite similar to Ireland, which made it
easier to adjust to the city.
It?s lovely to be able to go for
a walk during the day after I
finish work and explore the
city, without fear of being
pelted with rain like in Ireland. It is extremely clean and
the buildings are wonderful.
The harbour is perfect to sit

From a student?s point of
view the nightlife has been
fantastic. None

was one of the best experiences that I have ever had.

Our beautiful facility in Helsinki is a genuine Chinese oasis to
which you are heartfelt welcome. In Helsinki you have all the shops and
restaurants and bars, but you
still have the peace and quiet
that I adore. They were
packed to bursting point and
there was plenty of good-natured banter with opposition
fans throughout the night.
It was the way a sports bar
should be and made for a very
good night.
The city is the polar opposite to Ireland. For me that is the
most attractive thing about
this wonderful city. Hundreds of customers visit our facility in Helsinki each month to receive holistic treatment and relaxing massage.

which makes me respect the
Finnish people is that I have
seen a lot of children who
ride the tram on their own. If
you saw this in Ireland people
would be calling child services to have the parents locked
up because it would be considered very dangerous for a
child to ride the tram without an adult. My
preconceived notations of
Finland could not have been
further from the truth
