That's why they were camped out at the foot of Wall Street: That's where power lies. If we don't halt the corporate cannibalisation of the country and the political class is not going to do it then we are going to continue to barrel towards this neo-feudalism, which we are rapidly close to having with a rapacious, obscenely wealthy, oligarchic corporate elite. Movements take a long time to come to fruition. In the book, it's a teacher the son of coal miners in Virginia who used that term. Chris Hedges explains why the Occupy protests we've seen so far are merely a dress rehearsal for what is to come.
M ARKNE W S
How do the places you visited in the making of Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt exemplify what's behind the Occupy movement. In that sense, Karl Marx was right: Unfettered capitalism is a revolutionary force. They won't stop. It's always the ruling class that determines the configurations of revolt. Will it even be called Occupy. The problem is that once you unleash these forces, they know no limits. So that's a big question: How do you carry out a revolt without a powerful, organised labour force. As they finish these sacrifice zones, they'll turn on what remains. Helsinki Times reserves the right to accept or reject submissions, as well as to edit or shorten the text. But I have zero doubt that something is coming back. I thought, "Wow, all the places we're writing from are sacrifice zones where human communities, human beings, have all been sacrificed." It was Julian Martin that mentioned the term to me.
So, sacrificing to, or for, what. In southern West Virginia, Big Coal even writes the textbooks in the schools. So no, there's no guarantee that it's going to work at all. In this case, the people who are doing the sacrificing aren't the people who are profiting from it. As Julian said, they're being
in The Anatomy of Revolution, revolutionary movements adopt a fundamental goal that the power elite can never meet, because if they did, it would mean their own dissolution. There's no guarantee that it will succeed. In the form of violence. It's about civil disobedience, and it's about continuing that civil disobedience until power is wrested back from the hands of corporations. If they respond rationally if they were, for instance, to declare a moratorium on foreclosures and bank repositions, and to forgive student debt, if we had universal health care, and if they instated a jobs program especially targeted at those under 25, that would dissipate the move-
ment. What's your view on that. It was never aligned with labour or the working class. No one knows. ?"
porate power then you can't talk about a rational healthcare policy, you can't talk about sustainable energy, and you can't talk about public education. 1905 was the dress rehearsal for 1917. Articles should be at least 5,000 characters-with-spaces long (maximum length 10,000). In all these "sacrifice zones," there are no legal impediments to what corporations want. We have powerful proto-fascist elements in the United States that do what fascist movements do. And as Crane Brinton writes Well, of course we want all that, but you can't have it under this system. What will it look like. You've compared the Occupy movement to things you've seen in Eastern Europe with the fall of communism. The thing is, if non-violent, peaceful mass protest doesn't work, and corporate forces continue to disembowel the country ... Is that the first time you heard it. I've covered movements all over the world, and they have a kind of mysterious life force of their own. They control the legislators, the senators, the governors, and they certainly control the judges. Once the war was over, once Richard Nixon was out of office, it lost its focus. This is a system that exclusively serves corporate power, so appealing to the system is a waste of time. And you really need labour to push through significant social change. I think they have a very defined goal, which is the overthrow of corporate power. You're sacrificing for corporate profit. But that's not a goal that those in power can hear. In the last few weeks, hundreds of thousands of American workers have lost their unemployment benefits, the food-stamp program has been cut, and the Supreme Court made a ruling that severely crippled public-sector unions. Instead, their only response was force to physically eradicate the encampments. There's nothing to stop them now from, in business terms, harvesting the entire country. This is one of the problems, because we only have five to seven per cent of the American workforce engaged in manufacturing. So they keep saying, "What are your demands. So, I know there's going to be a backlash. I don't know when it's coming, I don't know what it will look like, and I don't know if it will succeed. The Occupy movement has often been criticised for not having a really defined set of goals. They celebrate the language of violence and they blame societal ills on the vulnerable Muslims, undocumented workers, homosexuals, and intellectuals. And what is it going to look like once it's lit. 2) Where did you go. 3) It was really hot and sunny in Croatia but the bad weather in Finland didn't affected my choice for vacation. President Sauli Niinistö has managed to fit three crowd-pullers into this year's summer schedule: the European Athletics Championships, the Seinäjoki Tango Festival and the Finnhorse Trotting Championship in Mikkeli, while at the slightly more exclusive end of the spectrum lies the Savonlinna Opera Festival. I am from Denmark but I live in Finland and I was visiting friends and family in Denmark and Scotland. But I haven't been traveling a lot. Many people took foreign vacations in search of better weather around midsummer and in July. Kouvola witnessed the highest temperature of 27 degrees on 16 June. The leaders of the government parties have been doing the summer circuit with varying frequency. Karvia in Satakunta had by 23 July experienced 218 mm of rain, the second-highest amount in 50 years. The choice of event often reflects the politician's own interests. Either as a guest or speaker, Räsänen has been to SuomiAreena series of debates in Pori, the Gospel meeting in Turku, the Firstborn Laestadians' midsummer gathering in Lahti, the Wycliffe Bible Translators summer party in Tampere and the National Missionary Days in Pieksämäki, the Summer Services of Conservative Laestadians in Loppi as well as to the Evangelical Free Church of Finland Summer Conference in Hämeenlinna. Some of Matvejeff previous accolades include: touring with soprano Karita Mattila, winning several prizes at respected piano competitions and working as assistant conductor at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. Recently, Helsingin Sanomat published a lengthy article concerning suspicions over the actual existence of the girl. He will be conducting famous operas such as Benjamin Britten's Let's Make an Opera and Aribert Reimann's Lear and will work on production and as assisting conductor for Mozart's Magic Flute during the 2012-2013 season. FINNS PARTY Member of Parliament James Hirvisaari has sparked another controversy this week by comparing homosexuality to mental disability. Vettenterä has not commented on the investigation. "Maybe the rainbow includes also polygamy, incest, bestiality and lots of other kinky stuff. Also disabled people must accept themselves as they are, as they cannot change," wrote Hirvisaari on Monday, before continuing that, "homosexuality or disability does not diminish human value, and that society should not judge gay or disabled people." The discussion originated from a Facebook update by Hirvisaari in which he said; "Unfortunately many young people make the error of voting for the Green Party, which
cashes in on environmental values. New details emerged in April, when it was revealed that Vettenterä and Elisa's father had attended the same elementary school, where Elisa's father had allegedly bullied Vettenterä. According to Pirjo Ilanne-Paprika, the physician in chief of the Finnish Diabetes Association, a few dozen cases of Type 2 diabetes in children have been found. "I think it would be in order to wonder if homosexuality involves some kind of sexual handicap, if a person does not develop according to the natural order of things. The surplus solar power generated during the summer months would be compensated in winter electricity bills. It is not a question of disease, but a disability. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, while type 2 diabetes is commonly caused by adulthood obesity. However, Niinistö referred to the 1952 Helsinki Olympics by stating: "We must take pride in the fact that small Finland was able to organise such large games." HT-STT

They fear a second "haunting legacy" of damage from a conglomerate that was involved in the manufacture of AO. Nguyen Van Rinh, a retired general and head of the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange, said "Yes, I believe that many Vietnamese are angry with the decision of the Olympics 2012 organisers. Orange (AO), often called the `last legacy' of the United States war in Vietnam (1955-1975), has popped up again thanks to its manufacturer Dow Chemical's controversial sponsorship of the Olympic Games. The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences concluded in its report, `Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 1996 Summary and Research Highlights,' that "there is limited or suggestive evidence of an association between exposure to herbicides used in Vietnam and spina bifida in children of Vietnam veterans." For some time now, environmentalists have also been concerned that Monsanto, which supplies much of the world's seeds, has been quietly making inroads into Vietnam. After relations between the US and Vietnam were normalised in 1995, the former earmarked funds for cleanup operations, but these were largely confined to `hotspots'

Concerned for second haunting legacy Estimate of people affected by AO range from 2.1 million to over four million, and the Vietnamese government blames it for cancers and birth defects in some 500,000 second and third generation children. Reacting to Vietnam's letter of protest to the IOC, Dow told VietWeek (a weekly English language news magazine published by Thanh Nien News) that the War Production Act absolves the company given that it was compelled by the US government to produce the defoliant. This meant an outright rejection of Taliban calls against women education, Hussain said. The Taliban opposition reinforced the girls' resolve to study." Also, under US law, Dow and Monsanto cannot be held responsible since they were acting under government orders. "The militants destroyed 23 girls schools besides burning about 150 music shops," education officer Dildar Ali said.
A soldier of the crisis management forces of the ISAF hands out school supplies to local girls in Surobi village, Afghanistan, in defiance of a similar ban by the Taliban.
"The city also saw several suicide bombings, two of them hitting army training centres. "I think cooperation between the US and Vietnam in finding and implementing solutions to the AO issue seems to be a little better now," Rinh said. Rinh has already questioned agriculture minister Cao Duc Phat about Monsanto's work in Vietnam during a National Assembly session. The case, which began in 2004, was thrown out in early March 2009 with the court ruling that there was no established link between dioxin use and birth defects in Vietnam.

In all 265,000 students sat the examinations, including 115,343 girls. A group of over 100 Vietnamese plaintiffs had taken their case to the US Supreme Court, suing both Dow and Monsanto for AO damage. Malakand saw destruction of 181 schools from 2007 to 2009, among them 118 were girls' schools. These results, he said, were made possible because the army, the police and the population in these areas stood like a rock against the Taliban. "We need more female teachers and doctors to cope with the problem of education health needs. We have a consensus among our members that the decision taken by the government actually weakened our position in the light of the CO2 emission goals set for 2020." Kallio admits that the new rate system will encourage people to choose loweremitting vehicles, but he says that with fewer cars being sold overall, total emissions will not go down as hoped. Used cars, which avoid the tax, seem to be selling well so far this year. Well, now when the car tax was increased and the progression steepened, people will buy fewer cars." So far this year, 113,731 vehicles were first registered

The European Central Bank is probably the largest holder of debt of some countries right now, and of course the official bailout funds are the prime lenders for a few countries. What is clear is that Finland is uniquely dependent upon foreign, private lenders and not to local or official creditors. Not only would this be for the benefit of Europe, it is in our own interest.
The Association of Automobile Importers in Finland believe the new rate system will encourage people to purchase lower-emitting vehicles.

Sales collapse "The meaning was good, but it failed to see the bigger picture," says Tero Kallio, Managing Director of the Association of Automobile Importers. In March, Kesko's VV-Auto division were 123 million euros. "This way people would be better enabled to afford a newer, safer, lower-emitting car than nowadays." He points out the annual usage tax has already been tied to emissions, but as long as it is one of the lowest rates in the EU it won't have much impact. The main reason for this is that the open-market activities of central banks tend to be kept quiet, so as not to disrupt the activities of the other participants. If they were to lose faith in us not because of our budget but because of our rhetoric we couldn't replace them: Finns only bought 8.3% of our last bond issue. Politicians demanded that only private creditors take losses. In this way he thinks everyone would prosper: the government would be better able to predict tax income, emissions would be lowered, and traffic safety improved.

Finland 360° presents all of Finland´s 19 regions through photos, captations and maps. An electric car, with no carbon dioxide emissions, is now taxed at the lowest 5 per cent rate. We know that the older the car is, the higher its emissions and the poorer its safety record. Only two were purchased by individuals, increasing the fleet of private electric cars to a total of five.
THIS is why I am worried about some of the rhetoric coming out of a select group of Finnish politicians, some with anti-foreign or anti-EU sentiments, and others who attack private lenders. In April, after the tax became effective, sales were 47 million euros. +358-9-616 621, info@hotelanna.fi

problem is that lenders have lost faith in the credit-worthiness of some countries. A LARGER difficulty was the Greek default. "We in Finland already drive some of the oldest cars in the EU: if all registered cars are taken into account, the average age is 12.4. If we want the debt markets to return to normal, there needs to be a voice at the table representing the lenders. In May they improved to almost 59 million euros. 8

One goal of the ECB's unlimited liquidity operations was to get private creditors to lend more to floundering sovereigns.
ON THE FIRST of April, the impact of Finland's new car taxation system was immediately felt. According to Trafi, the Finnish transport safety agency, only 33 electric cars were sold last year. ONE PROBLEM is the rhetoric. The overall fall is even more surprising given the huge surge in buying during March, as drivers rushed to get behind the wheels of new cars before the higher tax rate was implemented. Sales of new vehicles collapsed, and the industry is nervously hoping that buyers will return. As the value added tax can't be changed, he suggests the acquisition tax should be lowered or discontinued, and the annual tax be set to the EU average. THIS BACKFIRED. Private lenders became increasingly dubious, as well they should. "We should move towards the taxation model that has been adopted by the majority of the EU countries: one should pay tax for the usage of the car instead of acquiring it," opines Kallio. "What happens to the road traffic emissions if newer
and lower emitting cars won't sell?" continues Kallio. Official creditors had to step into the hole, either directly or indirectly. Policy makers hope that sales will improve, but they are already starting at a very low level. They have a valid argument, but European politicians have a long way to go to restore their credibility as safe and reliable debtors.
Higher car taxes depress sales

Retail trade confidence slips
The confidence in retail trade in the Finnish economy has decreased significantly, the Confederation of Finnish Industries suggest. The decision to focus solely on the online edition came as a surprise to the editor-in-chief, Maria Pettersson "particularly because we have been preparing to revamp the magazine. Stora Enso saw sales fall 2 per cent, and Metsä Group had theirs off by 8 per cent. Wood fuels account for 22 per cent of Finnish energy consumption. The new magazine is already printed, but will never see the light of day." Consequently, talks to trim editorial staff and sales personnel are set to commence. In addition, retail sales expectations were curbed after sales growth slowed down in July. On the other hand, 95 per cent of the supporters of the Swedish People's party voiced their support for the currency in the survey, for which roughly 1,000 Finns were interviewed in late July. Wooden buildings, furniture and other products takes 14 per cent of production value. BUT WE WILL HELP YOU. The industry is constantly searching for new uses for wood products, and one of the most pursued is renewable energy. In contrast, less than 25 per cent believe Finland should leave the monetary union and readopt the old currency, Finnish markka. As recently as June, retail trade confidence in Finland was the strongest in the EU. Elisa, similarly, appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal, which upheld the District Court's decision, and are now seeking a leave to appeal to the Supreme Court. Although the forestry industry is attempting to rebrand itself as green, it still finds itself opposing some environmental regulations. Black liquor,
which is created from the pulp manufacturing process, is also frequently being used as an energy source. "The more you fly, the more you lose." Nevertheless, Ryanair maintained its forecast of a profit of 400-440 million euros for the fiscal year. The survey, conducted by Taloustutkimus, indicates that the supporters of the Centre, in particular, have become more eurocritical, with currently one in three willing to ditch the single shared currency
All you need to do is contact the Sea Lady Sailing's own professional skipper, Jaakko Saatsi. As Finland is known as the home country of mobile phones, this sport could only have been invented by the Finns. www.purjehduskurssi.com/en/. The competition has been organised since 1996 at the Oulu Music Video Festival, and it has advocated a message of peace from the start:

someone playing the air guitar cannot and will not do anything bad. This is not a serious competition, but more of a curious tradition that is repeated each year in late July or early August.
ENTERTAINMENT
The event has no official organiser, and the route taken each year is decided by users of Facebook and the IRC-gallery. Several types of carrying may come into play: piggyback, fireman's carry (over the shoulder) or Estonian style, where the wife hangs upside down on the man's shoulders. The history of this sport is obscure, but a certain story tends to recur: a robber called Herkko Rosvo-Ronkainen lived in the late 1800s with his gang of thieves in the woods, terrorising villages and stealing women and food from nearby. The competition is organised by the Translation and Interpretation Company Fennolingua. Wife carrying is a popular Finnish competition that in-
Curious tradition One of the strangest sports around is the Kaljakellunta, where thousands of Finns descend the Vantaa or Kerava River on rubber boats and other floating devices while drinking beer. Another curious competition is the mobile phone throwing that takes place in Savonlinna on 18 August. In freestyle the contestant is awarded points for creativity and aesthetics on a scale of 4 to 10. The belief that lighter phones fly better is not necessarily true; some believe that heavier ones are the way to go. The first male to carry the "wife" over the course is deemed the winner. The Air Guitar World Championship Competition, which takes place in Oulu in
late August, is pretty much what the name suggests: playing an invisible guitar as inspirationally and originally as possible. The sailing school also provides guided tours in the Finnish archipelago and the Mediterranean Sea, but as we are here to promote Finland, you can forget about the last bit. It combines the philosophy of recycling and fun, and also the thought of not being continuously reachable by phone. Groups of volunteers have done most of the work in cleaning-up for the last few years. This has been a problem in terms of cleaningup after the event. Although many consider the sport a joke, competitors tend to take the competition very seriously, and an International Wife Carrying Competition Rules Committee determines the official rules of the game, which is practiced as far afield as the USA and Hong Kong. Apparently the men ran away with the women on their backs, and these women later became their wives. Special gloves for the players have been developed by the Science Centre Heureka and the School of Science and Technology, which can be utilised to track the movements of the player and transformed into actual music. 10

Wacky Finnish competitions
The Finns have introduced a number of peculiar sports to the rest of the world.

volves a man, a woman and an obstacle course. Criteria for scoring points include the form of dancing and a groovy appearance. The courses can be taken at the Lauttasaari, HSK Marina, a short distance and a bridge away from the Helsinki city centre. Contestants form teams of up to three persons. There is also an opportunity to rent a boat with some friends without the need for relevant experience or competence. The best costume, most entertaining couple and the strongest carrier are awarded special prizes.
THE FINNISH folk can be eccentric; just look at the odd array of sports they have developed over the years.
Many of them have spread outside Finland, and some have even developed world championships. The competition has three categories: freestyle, traditional and junior. These are not nearly all of those worth taking a look at: swamp soccer, Wellington boot throwing, sitting on an ant's nest, mosquito squashing and milking stool throwing are also, believe it or not, Finnish pastimes.
Water-sports around Helsinki
In this series Helsinki Times takes a look at some of the more popular water-sports opportunities near, or around, the city.

Sailing School Sea Lady Sailing For all you sailors and would be skippers, the Sea Lady Sailing School provides beginners and advanced sailing lessons in both Finnish and English. The traditional kind involves an over the shoulder throw, where the distance achieved is crucial. He will then accompany the group and ensure that the trip is safe and fun

The shape is a personal one for Kayiwa: "When I was growing up I liked everything about dominos." In the middle lies an inconspicuous groove, which is also a functional part of the design. · The area was first built on under the rule of King Gustav Vasa of Sweden. 1. Its architecture is beautiful and most of the buildings are old, but well kept.
Lincoln Kayiwa has launched new design products this spring, including the DOM·I·NO candle holder.

Please recommend one shop or service in your neighbourhood that you would like to promote. I have learned that nothing is impossible," Kayiwa says. The DOM·I·NO piece is an interesting design that can both stand on its own and work well in formations. Population density is 11,860/km2 . The Burgher's House museum in Kristianinkatu is interesting and the Kolme Kruunua restaurçant is good, as well as Savu restaurant in Tervasaari. In this fortnightly series, Helsinki Times has a chat with different people about the places they live in. What is special about your neighbourhood. "The next phase will be plastic," he says.
This spring Kayiwa established three fresh and innovative design products: the JOKI bench and DOM·I·NO and FAITH candle holders. There are for example many antique, book, flower and gift stores. How long have you lived there. What do you like about your neighbourhood. It is right in the heart of Helsinki and it is home to many official buildings, museums and associations (such as the Finnish Literature Society in Hallituskatu). "When in a tight situation, you need to work around it. It is a city neighbourhood. "I like to have this balance between functional and fun. 2. I love the peaceful environment, its little parks, its services (stores, restaurants and cafes) and the fact that many university buildings are very close. Kayiwa designed JOKI when on paternity leave;
when he learned how to multitask. He has focused on wood, ceramics and metal so far. 3. Some of my friends who visit Kruununhaka say that they feel they are visiting a different town or country because it is so special. Kayiwa's future plans include a process of internationalisation, with fairs in spring 2014 in strategically chosen locations as important catalysts. The International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York is a must, along with Cape Town World Design Capital. www.kayiwa.fi

Snellmaninkatu in Kruununhaka is typical of the quiet, leafy avenues around the area.
The JOKI bench allows various sitting positions for adults and children.
Did you know. A fair on each continent is on the agenda for the designer. At the Senate Square (Senaatintori) is the city's Cathedral and the Helsinki University. "When people light candles, for a millisecond they think where to put the match, so the groove provides a nice place for it. · Many buildings of the University of Helsinki are also situated in Kruununhaka. Despite its name, Kayiwa advocates design for universal tastes. Another thing about Kruununhaka is that many of its residents are very polite and easygoing, keeping up the good spirit of a neighbourhood that traditionally has been home of state and city officials.
LINCOLN KAYIWA,
a Uganda-born and Helsinki-based designer, launched a series of new products this May to complement his line of highly functional, yet also aesthetic designs. 5. The playful designs are as multilayered as the wooden surface on JOKI. "You get first-hand feedback on what you should and shouldn't do, and what to do better," Kayiwa says of participating in the fairs and the future. "I hope that for the 5-10 years the company grows organically. Since his graduation, Kayiwa has launched his eponymous design company, and worked with different materials. Next spring, Kayiwa will launch the much sought-after Dino clothes rack. · The area is home to Finnish public figures such as Kirka Babitzin (singer), Magnus Lindberg (composer and pianist) and Bror-Erik Wallenius (sports commentator), among others. Kayiwa is a 2007 Masters graduate of Aalto University School of Art and Design, and his first headlining exhibition will be featured at the Caisa Cultural Centre this August. Almost 3 years. Kruununhaka was found when the city of Helsinki moved from its earlier location in the 17th century. · The name Kruununhaka comes from a harbour garden where the king's horses were kept. It is home to the Presidential Palace, City Hall, Bank of Finland, student house and the Knight house. I'm trying to make classics products that are not affected by time, no seasonal products."
The plastic phase will include the biodegradable Rosé picnic glass in late 2013. In addition, the public transportation connections are very good. I live in Kruununhaka, in central Helsinki. Originally the bench was intended to be of colourful wood, but problems with the supplier necessitated a switch to birch plywood

Although his star dimmed in the intervening decades, Bennett went on to stage a remarkable comeback in the late 1980s and 1990s, releasing a series of gold records and even enticing the MTV generation. From Russian director Timur Bekmambetov, he of Wanted (2008) and the celebrated Night Watch (2004) and Daywatch (2006), advance word has been tepid, with fans staying away in droves overseas. The international programme features classics, documentaries and new films. Things, of course, don't go exactly as planned. Onscreen, Bio Rex stages the very first Fashion Film Festival (FFF), screening selections that marry film and fashion design. But when it's something along the lines of Giant Shark vs Mega Octopus (2009) or its sequel Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus (2010), things begin to look somewhat dire. Elsewhere, aside from the various cuisines to sample, the long list of artists includes August, offering unique clothing along with accessories, jewellery and home wares. Then again, one can't deny the curiosity factor invoked by the last pair. Spinach strengthens muscles, says new research
Reseachers have figured out why spinach, rich in nitrate and vitamins, strengthens muscles, Helsingin Sanomat reports. Now, after slightly reworking the concept, they seek to share their insights into the possibilities of vegan cuisine by offering a lunchtime buffet. The Indian
chickpea curry immediately impresses with its full flavour. "We want to support veganism and promote it in a way that we offer the alternatives so that people can make their own decisions," explains Simo J. So far the situation is not extremely serious, if the rains subside, reports Yle. Tuominen's colleagues describe him as being the soul and father of the warm Demo kitchen and say his incessant flow of new thoughts keep the restaurant atmosphere fresh and the dining experience magnificent every single night. Book your table tel. The atmosphere is casual, but smart. experts and various corners of society have butted heads over veganism for years. But this is hardly the case, explains Ruottinen. The supply of honey might be worse than hoped for this year also. There are less disturbing images to bear witness to when dining. Researchers would like to investigate whether the results could be utilised in treating patients with muscle conditions. 16

Strawberry harvest season is now in session, but warm and rainy weather could decay strawberries, especially organic ones, which have not yet been picked. Kr. Unusually, there is no rotating calendar for the daily menus, and different items are offered every day. With light, jazzy piano playing in the background, I am soon presented with a plate full of different colours and textures. For those with a sweet tooth, various cakes are on offer during the week, with Kosonen's special recipe "a kind of a cheesecake" being served today at 3.50 per slice. "If you compare vegan food to meat dishes, what exactly does the meat itself taste of. "We don't want to promote it aggressively, or make sermons; it's better that people figure it out for themselves. But I'm not into pushing the idea to become vegan." The stereotype of this cuisine is of tasteless fare, perched upon a bed of lettuce. "We try to serve tasty food with different lunch options everyday," Ruottinen says. Non-alcoholic beer is available for 2.50, as are organic ginger ale and smoothies for 3.50. If you cook up any meal, the taste usually comes
from spices, sauces and vegetables. Some of our food contains a little more seasoning, but good, fresh vegetables also have their own taste."

Fresh organic home-baked bread lies on the side of my plate, rounding out a very fresh tasting meal. With the clock nearing 4 pm, customers continue to arrive as I get up to leave, some of them no doubt soon to open their eyes to the varied tastes of vegan dining.

The chilly and damp weather experienced this summer may take its toll on berry and vegetable crops. A couple of summers ago, I sat transfixed in a vegetarian restaurant in Beijing, staring at a huge plasma screen that depicted animals on a conveyor belt being fed into a machine. Tar, blood, and tinned bear let's eat!
MOVING aside the bundles of birch twigs in the ice cream freezer, I find what I was looking for tar-flavoured ice cream! It is manufactured by a small company in Kuortane, and has been one of my greatest experiences with Finnish food. Banks are usually open Mon-Fri 9:15-16:15 except for the bank at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, which is open 6-22 daily. All I had to do was leave a little bit of it in the pot, fill it up with milk and leave it overnight to set. However, a quick trip to the local shop can hold many surprises. I have to admit, I never much cared for the taste or
consistency of viili, but I do have fun making it for others. Wherever you spot an ice cream stand you can be sure a mustamakkara stand is not too far away. A mixture of pig blood, pork, rye and flour, it is quite popular. I ordered myself a small portion with a nice helping of lingonberry jam. Wanha Kauppahalli ("Old Market Hall") at the Market Square and Hakaniemen Kauppahalli ("Hakaniemi Market Hall") are the most popular. I have now, over the years, become accustomed to this fruit flavour and currently enjoy indulging in the odd pot of pear yoghurt.
Odd foods crop up outside the supermarket as well. I found viili to be very interesting after a friend showed me how I could make it myself. Both are open Mon-Fri 8-18 and Sat 8-16 but are closed on Sundays. Market halls. The
abundance of rye bread is to be expected, but the rows of tinned meat, each depicting a different kind of wild animal on the side, are somewhat surprising. Perhaps it is us Kiwis that are strange for not including pear in our basic flavours. We also examine the phenomenon of grilli, or the Finnish barbeque. The second element of interest in the dairy section is the plethora of pearflavoured dairy products. Helsinki Times looks at some of the beautiful, old market halls around the city where you can find everything from tasty ethnic foods to handmade clothes. There are more surprises waiting in the dairy section of the shop. F or non-urgent ambulance services, dial 09 394 600, and non-urgent police matters, dial 09 1891. Any and every variety is always available in pear flavour. It's best not to think about what it is when you are eating it. Post Offices. I like to spend time walking around the city of Tampere, famous of course for its mustamakkara, blood sausage. I have never before come across pear-flavoured anything, despite pears being quite a common fruit. See www.forex.fi for more information. Contact No. Despite being from a country that bases a significant chunk of its income on the dairy business, I had never before laid eyes on the likes of quark or viili. The currency exchange counter at the harbour in Katajanokka, Helsinki is open every day (Mon-Sat 10-11:30, 1617:30 and 19:30-21:15, Sun 10-11:30, 16-17:30 and 6:30-8). While perhaps it was not quite as wondrous as my experience with the tar-flavoured ice cream, it is something that I might enjoy on occasion.
Next week... Firstly, there is a wide selection of dairy products. Of course, most of it can be filed under "normal": you have your basic meat and potatoes, a few root vegetables, and a nice hot sausage at a sports match.
