FINLAND has announced its
intention to sign a Host Nation Support memorandum
of understanding with Nato to effectively allow troops
from the defence alliance
to train on Finnish soil and
to provide assistance in the
event of accident, crisis or

However, the memorandum does not allow Nato
to deploy troops in Finland
without a specific request,
Carl Haglund (SFP), the Minister of Defence, emphasised
last week.
Similarly, it does not
oblige Nato to respond to a
request for assistance from
Finland.
In Finland, the announcement triggered both joy and
criticism because it was regarded as a move toward
membership in the defence
alliance.
Erkki Tuomioja (SDP), the

The other reason for the cuts is related to the troubles of the logistics sector, where net sales have contracted for 26 consecutive months.
Malinen also argued that the cost structure of a company

New witnesses
The prosecution is to call a
sister of the victim as a new
witness to shed light on the
events after the homicide.
According to her, the oldest
daughter of Auer confirmed
in hospital that she only saw
the body of the victim at the
scene of the homicide.
The defence, in turn, is
expected to call attention to
the alleged failure of investigators to thoroughly consider alternative investigative
steps. The man implicated
by the woman was brought in
for questioning earlier this
summer, but the prosecution
determined that the man had
no role in the homicide and
instead filed a criminal complaint against the woman for
misleading the investigators.
Auer said on Monday that
she is under the impression
that the perpetrator has
died, revealing that she saw
a picture of a missing man
who resembled the perpetrator after the death of her husband. ?The daughter
did not see an intruder in her
parents. When
heard by the District Court of
Satakunta last year, the oldest child told that she can no
longer recall the events of the
night in question.
The second oldest child of
Auer, in turn, named his mother as the killer in an interview
videotaped in 2011. In its ruling, the court
concluded that the accounts
of the children, the lack of
audible signs of the alleged
intruder on the emergency
call, and the amount of time
required for the sequence
of events described by Auer rule out the possibility of
third party involvement.
The dissenting judge reminded that inconclusive
evidence must always be interpreted in favour of the accused and that therefore the
account of the oldest daughter must not be ignored despite its inconsistencies.

The use of physical force,

cases where the victim has

The Supreme Court in
2012 consigned the case
back to the district court on
grounds of the vast amount
of new evidence presented by both the defence and
prosecution.
The Vaasa Court of Appeal had acquitted Auer of
all charges a year earlier after concluding that reasonable doubt about third party
involvement persisted.
On Monday, district
prosecutor Kalle Kulmala presented in his opening
statement the interpretation of the prosecution of the
course of events, calling attention particularly to factors that he believes rule out
the possibility of third party
involvement.
?We believe the crucial question to be whether
or not an intruder entered
the house and killed Jukka Lahti in the fashion and
time-frame described by Anneli Auer. It is a question of
the credibility of Auer?s testimony,. HS
change implemented at the beginning of

tougher penalties for rapists.

a manner that violates their
right to sexual self-determination, has similarly become
punishable under law and carries the minimum penalty of a
fine and maximum penalty of
six months in prison.

In addition, the legislative change has broadened
the definition of rape in the
Criminal Code of Finland.
Acts previously treated as
coercion into a sexual act are
henceforth treated as rapes
that carry the penalty of four
years. Kulmala said.
According to the prosecution, the homicide was
the result of a domestic dispute, during which Auer had
threatened to file for a divorce. One of them
grabbed a kitchen knife,?
Kulmala described the
events on the fateful night.
Auer, in turn, insisted that
she and her husband had no
intention of divorcing and
only argued about mundane
matters, such as which one
would take the children to
the dentist or return books
to the library.
She was also adamant on
third party involvement.
The prosecution contrastively called attention
to a number of factors that
purportedly rule out the
possibility of third party involvement, such as the fact
that no signs of the alleged
intruder are audible on the
emergency call recording.
The oldest child of Auer has told in interrogations
that she saw the perpetrator, a man in a hooded sweatshirt, leave the family?s home
on the night of the homicide.
Her account of the events

the acquittal of Auer in 2011.

Aziz said, as former Mosul residents sat idly on the

Iraqi education officials say
the crisis is unique because of
the sheer number of families
who have fled their homes in
the three months since the Islamic State rushed in.
According to the aid agency Refugees International, an
estimated 2.8 million Iraqis
left their homes for other cities or neighbourhoods inside
the country during the eightyear US occupation of Iraq ?
including the worst period of
sectarian bloodletting, from
2006 to 2007.
But at that time, more
shelter was available, Iraqis
say, because of a pattern of
displacement that saw Sunnis and Shiites flee neighbourhoods on the basis of
sectarian lines.
?Back then, there were
multiple displacements ?
Sunnis leaving Shiite areas and Shiites leaving Sunni
areas,. In Baghdad, an estimated
60 percent of the schools are

At Hamed Aziz?s elementary school in south Baghdad, the displaced have been
showing up day by day for the
past month.

No one knows exactly how
many schools now serve as
temporary lodging for displaced people. More than 240
developed the disease in the
four countries, and more
than 120 have died, the WHO
said on 25 August.
. In the past, the fatality rate has been as high as 90
per cent. The virus has
infected more than 3,000
people, making it the biggest outbreak ever, and has
killed more than 1,550. The death
toll there has risen to six after a doctor who died in the
southern oil city of Port Harcourt tested positive posthumously, Health Minister
Onyebuchi Chukwu said in emailed statement.
There?s no cure for Ebola
and the outbreak, which began in Guinea in December,
has jumpstarted the development of drugs against the
virus.
US scientists will begin
enrolling patients as soon
as next week in safety trials of GlaxoSmithKline?s experimental vaccine, Michael
Kurilla, director of the Office of Biodefense, Research
Resources and Translational
Research, said Wednesday in
a telephone interview.
The virus is spread through
direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person. It
causes fever, diarrhea, muscle pain, vomiting and, as it
progresses, can lead to bleeding from the eyes, ears and
nose. The
main countries hit by Ebola are among Africa?s poorest, with rudimentary health
systems, inadequate supplies
and a shortage of doctors and
nurses.
That shortage has been
compounded by the toll Ebola has taken on health workers this year. said Colin MacInnes, the deputy chief of
UNICEF in Iraq.

Guinea and Sierra Leone are
?struggling to control the escalating outbreak against a

significant deficits in capacity and rampant fear.?
By mobilising international resources, the WHO is
aiming to stop Ebola transmission within six to nine
months, the agency said in
the document. They

Cases also have been reported in Nigeria. The goal is
for the body?s immune system
to eventually beat the disease.
The WHO and aid groups
have struggled to bring Ebola under control. Iraqis prided themselves on
their attention to education.
According to an old Middle
Eastern saying, books were
written in Cairo, published in
Beirut and read in Baghdad.
But after years of war, according to the United Nations, illiteracy has grown
somewhat.
International experts say
children whose education is
disrupted for a prolonged period risk becoming labourers
or being recruited by militant groups. With assistance from
Anna Edney in Washington.. Up to a quarter-million of those forced
from their homes are schoolage children, MacInnes said.
On top of that, internal political conflicts have stalled the
payment of salaries to teachers
and other education officials,
according to workers from
nongovernmental aid groups.
Those political differences led
to the collapse of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki?s bid for a
third term last month.
Salama al-Hassan, an
Education Ministry spokeswoman, said the government remains committed to
the school year beginning 22
September. Widespread fear of the illness and
suspicion of aid workers is
prompting families to hide
people with the virus, and funeral practices such as the
kissing of corpses have propagated Ebola?s spread. About 52 per cent of
those infected in the current
outbreak have died.
Doctors treat patients by
keeping them hydrated, replacing lost blood and using
antibiotics to fight off opportunistic infections. 10
4 . But even at
that distance from the conflict, accommodations were
crowded, flea-infested and
devoid of clean water. said
Ali, the volunteer, who delivered a carload of donated
clothes to the families at the
elementary school one recent day. For adolescents,
it can be exceedingly difficult
to reintegrate into the school
system once a conflict is over,
MacInnes said.
The families now sheltering at the elementary school
in east Baghdad said they
had been on the road for
more than two months, bolting for safety as marauding
jihadist forces overran one
town after another.
?We don?t know how long
we?ll be here,. she
added, using a euphemism
for the pattern of flight in
religiously mixed Baghdad,
which saw Shiites taking
over dwellings that Sunnis
had fled, and vice versa.
Schools were able to absorb many of the new students, in some cases by
breaking the school day into
two or three shifts, aid workers said.
This time, the movement
is far more lopsided, mostly
involving Shiite Iraqis fleeing vast jihadist-held areas
in Sunni-majority provinces. They came
back to us last week and re-
quested over 5,000 tents. The International Rescue Committee said
Thursday that more than 650

Lenovo also produces
tablet computers and the
company relates that it is
rising past Samsung as China?s favoured smart-phone
manufacturer.
According to De Lencquesaing, another future trend
is that the tablets will start to
look more similar to each other. explains Pihajoki. The Turku-based
team showed that OJ287 is a
binary system formed by two
black holes, a finding which
gains additional evidence
from Pihajoki?s research.
A black hole can be identified because it gobbles up gases and interstellar dust and
then converts the absorbed
material into emitted heat energy and light, which can be
observed from Earth, at the
wavelength of visible light.
OJ287, which Pihajoki has
adopted as his research topic,
defies belief and description.
The bigger of the two
black holes in the system was
for a long time the largest
black hole ever observed.
Located in the heart of
a distant galaxy, the supermassive system has a mass
of 18 billion Suns and its
event horizon . The guitarplaying weightlifter will, however, stick to studying black
holes, just from a different
perspective. The old images
are used as support for new
observations.
Scientists got lucky because OJ287 is located in the
constellation of Cancer, close
to the other planets. The light waves
have had time to stretch and
are close to the wave length
of red light.
As the universe has expanded while the light has
been travelling through
space, the wave length has
become longer.
The giant black hole has
a companion, which equals
hundred million Suns in size.
The interaction between
the two black holes of different sizes is what makes the
OJ287 system so interesting.
?We really got lucky, being able to observe two black
holes so close to each other,?

reaching the point where it

Lindroos.
Now his living costs for
the space totalling 15 square

euros a year, translating into just over 160 euros per
month.
Having spent much of his
life in cramped spaces in the
cabins of lorries and ships,
he does not find the walls of
his small living quarters closing in on him and has no regrets over giving up his old

Lindeman, however, travels to work by train. He also

a caravan in the area.

The 1,200-square-metre garden boasts an apple tree,

rhubarb, along with raspberry, gooseberry and currant
bushes.
Welcome to our home,
says Mari Lindeman, 33, who
lives in Lahti with her husband, Heikki Norola, 33.
Six months ago, the couple waved goodbye to their
old home in a block of flats
and bought a 200-squaremetre house on its own plot,
paying just over 200,000 euros for it.
?I can?t imagine buying a
place in the Capital Region,?
says Lindeman, offering
home-baked rhubarb pie.
What is wrong with
Helsinki?
?For that price, we?d get a
studio flat in Central Helsinki. The regular Z train passenger, who
has commuted to Helsinki
for seven years now, clocking up around 200 rail kilometres every day, does not
complain as she has become
a member of a train gang.
?It?s a bunch of people I?ve
got to know on the train. There is no
sofa where to urge guests to

brewing a cup of coffee.
The theatre actor, who arrived in Finland a year ago,
prefers to sleep in the woods
rather than spend his money on a flat, saying that rental rates are extortionate in
Finland.
?If you compare prices in
Finland with other countries,
rents are really high here.?
Statistics bear witness
to Gentile?s observation as
graphs depicting rental prices have been creeping up
year after year.
According to data collected by Statistics Finland,
rents in the Capital Region
were four per cent higher this
spring than at the same time
last year.
In Helsinki, the average
rental rate per square metre
is not much short of 20 euros,
while purchase prices are also through the roof.
At the same time, homelessness is becoming a bigger problem in Finland, with
studies conducted by the
Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland
(ARA) revealing that there
were roughly 8,000 homea bLOOd-tHIrsty
less people in Finland last
year, half of them in the Helsinki region.
Several reasons may be
behind homelessness: shortage of affordable housing,
unemployment, debts and
poor credit records.
everything

Gentile rummages around
his rucksack where he stores
most of his possessions: a
compass, smartphone, air
mattress, water bottle, four
T-shirts, two pairs of socks,
underwear and pyjamas.
A packet the size of a bag
of flour reveals Gentile?s bed,
a sleeping bag.
He makes the bed, brushes bits of rubbish off his feet
and climbs in, leaving only
his eyes, nose and mouth visible through a little a hole at
the top of the sleeping bag.
He got used to an ascetic lifestyle already as a little
boy in Italy where this realworld Snufkin would set up
his tent in his bedroom. That is what
Juma Fungo, 23, dreams of.
The young Ugandan is one of
the homeless of Helsinki.
Able to stay in his sister?s
two-bedroom flat, which she
shares with her child and
friend, he at least has a roof
over his head. I?ve
never been invited to a viewing. Immigrants are also
a growing group among the
homeless, with around 2,000
immigrants finding themselves without a permanent
home last year.
Fungo says that finding
a place of his own is proving more difficult than getting work. The usual
winter bugbear, snow clearing, is not a problem either as
the camping site?s staff keep
paths in the area clear of
snow, whatever the weather.
Weather conditions allowing, the living space expands outdoors as from early
spring until late into autumn,
Lindroos likes to spend time
under the canopy, reading
Donald Duck comics and listening to Finnish pop. They offer help and
say I can stay with them.?
Once winter comes knocking on the door and the sleeping bag starts to feel cold,
crashing on a sofa becomes a
more tempting proposition.
?Sleeping in different
places allows me to meet interesting people and learn
about the local culture.?
During the summer
months, Gentile uses a map
app on his mobile to pick a
spot to set up home for the
night. Some friends are
building a house there, and
just the plot set them back
100,000 euros.?
And having a garden is not
something they are prepared
to negotiate on as it is important for their four-year-old
dog, Martta, which has been
through tough times, having
been homeless for some time
and worked as a guard dog
at a construction site in Vyborg. Living like this is pretty
unheard of in Finland,. Three people were also
injured in the storm.
?Some people think I?m
mad while others are suspicious. It
doesn?t take me any longer to
travel from Lahti.?
Looking for a
place of his own
His own home. Only around
five per cent of applicants get
lucky and find a council flat in
Helsinki.
Fungo is not alone as
there are around 2,000
young homeless people in
Finland. says
Lindroos.
After totting up the figures, he took the leap and,
giving up his flat in Leppävesi
in Laukaa, bought a secondhand caravan, drove it to the
Hietasaari camping site in
Uurainen and moved in.
Hietasaari is the place
where a tornado wreaked
havoc four years ago, bringing down trees and smashing
cars. Despite having to share his
sleeping quarters with foxes and other small wildlife,
he has never felt unsafe or
scared.
?But mosquitoes are the
worst thing. There have been
times when he has applied
for around a dozen flats a day,
sending emails and making
phone calls.
?I?ve never met any of the
landlords face to face. It?s a common notion
that you must be down on
your luck if you don?t live in
an ordinary house or flat.?
?People often think that
I?m running away from something or that there are some
serious complications in my
life. She has no interest in
finding out.
?I don?t want to compromise on the quality of the
house at the cost of the location. Around
seven years ago he started
to wonder whether it really
made sense to spend a sizeable chunk of his income on
rent.
?It seemed ridiculous to
fork out 600 euros in rent
money every month,. Compared with spaces he spends
his time in during his work
shifts, he has all the space he
could wish for in the caravan.
?My son also said that
compared with his bedsitter
this seems spacious.?
The tiny space manages to
house a surprising amount of
facilities: a bedroom with a
double bed, living area complete with a sofa, shower and
a toilet.
On a shelf in the cooking corner, jars of herbs and
spice stand in a neat line, just
like in any other kitchen.
?I get hot water in here, all
the mod cons. Pekka has
even given her some paternal
advice on wedding arrangements. During
the daytime, he meets other residents by the camping
site?s kiosk to put the world
to rights and on Saturday
evenings, karaoke provides
the entertainment. It feels like I?m not trusted, or given a chance. After that, I?ve also got to know women from
Mäntsälä and Orimattila.?
There are times when Lindeman finds the commute almost therapeutic. The rent on the
flat amounts to 1,200 euros a
month.
Previously, he crashed
on a sofa at a friend?s place
but it was an untenable
arrangement.
?A lot of his friends came
by and I couldn?t ask them to
leave even when I wanted to
sleep as it wasn?t my home.?
Apart from his living arrangements, Fungo?s life
seems ordinary: he has
friends, works in a supermarket and is into music.
But he also has poor credit
record, which makes finding
a flat difficult in the Capital Region where landlords
hold all the cards in the rental market.
In the Capital Region,
there are around 15,000 people urgently looking for a
rental flat, says Timo Metsola, the managing director
of Vuokraturva, a company offering rental property
services.
The majority of flat-hunters are after a one-bedroom place, but there are
also roughly 20,000 applicants in the queue looking
to swop flats. The couple also like the
large garage, which can easily house two cars, with space
for three more sets of wheels
on the drive in front of the
house.
?In Helsinki, even a parking space comes with a ridiculous price tag. Luca Gentile?s
home.
We are surrounded by
trees and creepy-crawlies
and not much else but this
is where Luca lays his head
down to sleep. A friend

NIINa WOOLLe y . Six

These travel companions
include Pekka and Timo.
?One of them runs a pawn
shop while the other fixes wind instruments. But I don?t use
them that much as the camping site has all the services.
The nearest toilet, an old outdoor loo, is just around the
corner. He masquerades as a giant caterpillar in the woods.
The high cost of housing has propelled people to look for alternative
solutions for accommodation: sleeping rough, living in a caravan,
crashing on a sofa at a relative?s place and commuting from another
town. It?s tougher for those
who don?t have anywhere to
go.?. There?s
no getting away from the
burden of the past. 10 september 2014

4 . It?ll follow
me for the rest of my life,?
says Fungo.
The high number of applicants coupled with a shortage of flats means that people
with poor credit record come
bottom of the pile when landlords select a tenant.
?But I?ll manage somehow, that?s what I?ve always
done. We

Caravan life
Finnish pop wafts softly from

He drives a long-distance

Thanks to air conditioning, the caravan remains

while in winter, gas and electric heating keep Lindroos

says
Torvald.
Once again, the quartet
bursts into laughter.

Although the number of
year-round residents in the
archipelago have been in decline for many years, the
considerable increase in holidaymakers here has ensured
that the region?s population
is now on the rise, according
to the Island Committee.
?In July, when you look at
the boats, I would say that
they are increasing all of the
time,. Martin says and
they all burst into laughter.
The islands bustle with life during the summer, but quieten down in the autumn.. There are
those who make it work but
if you want to do something
then there?s no other way
than being entrepreneurial one way or another,. a loaf of bread and

After the simplest of dinners . states
Martin. explains Martin. At some point,
work or studies took them
elsewhere for years on end
but eventually they all returned to their roots.
?We all sort of belong to
the generation where our parents were fishermen, farmers
or jacks-of-all-trades,. We live more
modestly out here.?
Law and its affect
In 1981, the Archipelago Law
was introduced to ensure work
for the inhabitants. explains Torvald. As you can see, the
retirees have found their way
back home in the end.?
?Although it?s more expensive,. ?Kasnäs
is getting worse and worse,
turning into an ant?s nest.?
Looking down from the
gazebo at the few people
roaming round, I ask them
what happens now that the
schools have started and everybody seems to have left.
?The village calms down
. ?As a retiree there?s
not much difference where
you live. says
Martin. A chapel is also on
hand as are Viking cottages.
Over the years, the Viking centre has grown into a
popular attraction that gives
business to Rosala. They?ve all
grown up in the village and
have known each other for
all of their lives.
?I was born in that house,?
says Torvald, pointing out
the panoramic windows.
?And that?s where I was
born,. Scattered
amidst the ocean is one of the
most extensive group of islands, islets, rocks and skerries in the world.
The scenery and splendour draws many summer
visitors to this remote and
isolated corner of Finland,
many of whom have summer cabins of their own on
one of the islands. This development is documented in
the comprehensive study by
the Island Committee (a governmental institute overseeing the archipelago),
entitled Permanently inhabited islands without a fixed
road connection.
According to the report,
the number of people engaged in primary production has dropped from 60 per
cent in the early 1990s to just
26 per cent in 2005, while the
trend has been almost equal
in the opposite direction for
the service industry.
This is much to do with
the flowering of archipelago
tourism in recent decades,
the report shows.

the chance to throw axes and
offer tributes to a sacrificial stone. 10 september 2014

Once the laughter subsides,
they agree that there are

They all agree that it takes
a certain character to live out

?You can, of course, live

basic services . ?If you don?t look for

The spread of networks to
the remote islands have also
been set up to make distance
working and daily errands
easier for the residents.
?What happens with people who don?t have the In-
ternet, only fishing nets??
Torvald ponders. We
have to pay dearly when we

?And when people have

get any work out here so they
have to move away,. I meet four characters who
have not been blown away by
the pre-autumn breeze.
Sitting in a gazebo overlooking Rosala, are Ingmar
Strandberg, Torvald Gustafsson, Mats Wilson and Martin Fagerholm. That was big
and grand and it went fast,?
chuckles Martin.
Lack of youth
A worrying trend regarding the
future of the island is the low
proportion of young people.
?There are not any young
people really,. adds
Ingmar.
Could they themselves
imagine moving away from
the archipelago and Rosala,
I enquire.
?We are not moving anywhere anymore,. Having eventually
left in the hope of something
better, opportunity beckoned
to them once again years later. a traditional fishing village located due

Because I didn?t have time

sink my teeth into a delicious

islands.
The archipelago has thus
been romanticised in a lot
of Swedish-speaking literature from both sides of the
sea; not least by renowned
Swedish author Astrid Lindgren?s book Vi på Saltkråkan
(?We on Seacrow Island?) and
the Finland-Swedish creator
of the Moomins, Tove Jansson?s Sommarboken (?Summer book?), with both works
found on many bookshelves
throughout the archipelago.
In July the bigger island
harbours are busy with life

?It has slowed down the
outward migration a bit and
the decline somewhat, but
you can?t claim that it?s made
the situation that much better on the island,. This is
where people come to escape
the hustle and bustle of their
busy urban lives, where kids
get to roam freely over the
stony islands and minds can
be put to rest amid the raw
beauty of nature. points out Torvald.
?It would be cheaper to be retired in the city, where they

There is also room for improvement in the intake of

most of the children who had

less vitamin D than the recommended 10 micrograms.
Children do not get enough
calcium in their diets either.
Researchers say that fractures can be prevented by exercise and physical activity

breastfeedINg may half the

finds a new study of nearly
14,000 British women by the
University of Cambridge.
Researchers found that
women planning to breastfeed had a 50 per cent lower
risk of suffering from postnatal depression if they managed to do so.
The benefits of breastfeeding to the mother?s mental well-being increased each
week up to one month but the
long-term effects of breastfeeding could not be studied
as only a fraction of mothers
continued to breastfeed beyond a couple of months.
The researchers speculated that the positive effects might be caused by the
feel-good hormones released
when milk is produced.
Breastfeeding also relieved
stress, helping mothers
relax.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends
that babies should be given
only breast milk until the age
of six months, saying that the
benefits of breastfeeding are
clear-cut.
But there is also a flip side
to breastfeeding as the study
showed that the risk of depression doubled for those
mothers who wanted to
breastfeed but for some reason could not.
?Those who wanted to
and didn?t end up breastfeeding had the highest risk of all
the groups,. explains Piirtola.

dig deep into their pockets if their child needs childcare,
which costs 164 pounds a week, on average.
This means that bringing up a child from a tiny tot
to an adult sets the parents back a whopping 153,000
pounds, translating into 193,000 euros.
The cost has shot up by ten per cent over the last
couple of years, says the Joseph Rowntree Foundation,
which commissioned the study.
Parents earning a minimum wage are hard-pushed
to provide food and clothes for their children, let alone
put them through school as costs have risen faster than
wages in Britain.
It?s hardly surprising that a quarter of British children live below the poverty line.
Finns should pay close attention to the cost of childcare in Britain.
If both parents work, paying for a child minder or a
nursery place eats up a considerable chunk of their net
income.
The study found that childcare was the largest cost
arising from children, accounting for around half of the
money spent on them.
In Britain, childcare costs have also gone up faster
than other prices, growing by 42 per cent between 2008
and 2014.
And forking out for childcare is just the beginning.
Basic education is free in Britain but there are not
enough places in high-performing state schools to go
round, so to ensure a good education for their children
parents must turn to fee-charging public schools.
The fees may amount to tens of thousands of euros a
year. HT
Last spring, a brouhaha erupted over the Finnish government?s announcement that it would cut child benefits. A new report on chil-

FINLAND succumbed to a 114-
55 defeat at the hands of the
United States in their opening game of the FIBA World
Cup in Bilbao, Spain, late on
Saturday evening.
The difference in class
between the national teams
was obvious as Team Finland,
known as the Wolf Pack,
were unable to keep up with
their superior opposition
practically throughout the
game and especially in the
second quarter.
The United States were brutal in the second quarter, not
allowing Finland a single point
from the field and taking a 6018 advantage to the half-time.
The Wolf Pack picked up
the pace and managed to reduce the deficit as the game
progressed, but the United
States refused to loosen their
grip on the proceedings, with
Klay Thompson, Anthony
Davis and Derrick Rose particularly effective with 18, 17
and 12 points respectively.
The best performers of
Finland were Petteri Koponen and Shawn Huff with
12 points each and Erik Murphy with 10 points.
Finland began the game
rather brightly, with Murphy
and Gerald Lee Junior converting their chances from inside
the three-point line, but had to
foul their opponents and were
quickly with no fouls to give.
Overall, the Wolf Pack
were toothless against the organised Team United States.
The United States began to
open up an advantage roughly five minutes into the first
quarter and by the end of the
quarter were leading 31-16. The
dominance of the United States
was even more resounding
in the second quarter, as they
only allowed Finland 2 points
against their 29.
There were some positives in the third quarter as
Huff netted the team?s first
three-pointer to help Finland
reduce the deficit.
Toward the end of the
game, head coach Henrik
Dettmann rotated his squad
in order to preserve key
players for Sunday?s game
against Ukraine, which Finland won 81-76.

The now 33-year-old forward returned to his

into the half, Rasmus Schüller was on the receiving end of
a nasty challenge from behind
by Rapid?s Stefan Schwab and
had to be replaced by Erfan

with a yellow card.
Yet, HJK found the equaliser with 75 minutes on the
clock through a deftly-executed curling free kick from
Nikolai Alho.
With Rapid desperate for
more goals, HJK struck again
an doubled the lead with a
stunning left-footed screamer from the edge of the box
to, yet again, take advantage
of sloppy defending by HJK.
Two minutes later, HJK
were able to halve the deficit after Teemu Tainio rose

Rapid Vienna got off to
the perfect start as 19-yearold midfield sensation Louis Schaub struck home from

ten minutes on the clock, after a lapse in concentration
from centre-back Markus

the header from Tainio, he
had no chance as Mac Kandji
pounced on the rebound.
With 24 minutes on the

corner for HJK, but Demba
Savage headed narrowly over.
Similarly to the first leg,
HJK struggled to find answers to the relentless press-

The second half began in
similar fashion, with HJK on

in the group stage of the Uefa

Rapid pegged one back

has been taking a lot of time!
And of course, as an old vehicle it needs maintenance often. Once the oil

? Add the crushed red pepper flakes and cook for 15 to 20 seconds, stirring, then add the pork; stir-fry for 4 to 5 minutes,
just until the meat is cooked through. Hopefully other cities find the courage to follow. ?We are

Manu Torchio, who runs
Taco Bot, a taco truck selling traditional Mexican tacos, has enjoyed being part
of this urban culinary wave.
?It?s nice to be part of this
new movement in Helsinki,?
he reflects. There?s a lot of talented chefs out there doing
food from the bottom of their
heart . But it has also not always been smooth sailing,
with Junttila pointing to some
challenges he?s had to face.
?Getting permits to sell

a challenge,. ?Customers always

4 . ?This
summer has been awesome! It
has been very hectic ever since
the city of Helsinki ?let us out
there?.. Thanks to that gatherings like the Street Food
Carnival have happened. ?20 food trucks have
had the licence for the summer trial. There is a lot more work
behind the scenes than people seem to think . ?Street food is definitely here to stay,. Fuelled by the
ever-popular Restaurant Day
and Flow Festival, some light
economic years, social media
and perhaps our fascination
with all things mobile, enjoying food from a food truck is
where you?ll find the foodies
right now. It?s influencing the mainstream and
more and more people are
thinking about running a
food truck or a kiosk.?
The street food carnivals
at Kasarmitori are set to continue, and Junttila advises
customers to ?stay tuned ?
we have been talking about
lots of ideas?.
Otherwise,
Relander
hopes that the Streat Helsinki events will return. Let sit
at room temperature for 15 minutes.
? Meanwhile, string the sugar snap peas; cut each one in half,
if desired.
? Pit the cherries, then cut each one in half or quarters, if desired.
? Cut the pineapple into bite-size pieces.
? Whisk together the broth, toasted sesame oil, the remaining
teaspoon of cornstarch, the pinch of sugar and a good pinch
of black pepper in a liquid measuring cup until smooth; this
will be the thickening/finishing sauce for the dish.
? Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil (as needed) in
a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. And this year?s
sizzling summer helped draw
plenty more to the Street
Food Carnivals held weekly
at Kasarmitori (Wednesdays)
and monthly at Teurastamo
(occasional Thursdays).
Before now, Helsinki?s
street food offerings have
been somewhat unexciting and dated. So it might
come back, but with a different angle.?
Other useful tools for the
Helsinki street food movement would be a mobile app
and kitchen incubators to
emerge, to help food entrepreneurs get started, two
things Relander has spoken
publically about before.
Street Food Carnivals are

This area is a controlled
environment where graffiti artists can come and make
their mark. There are micro-communities of Finnish culture
that work away without interference in their small corner of
Helsinki. You hear
about news and events usually too late, or in most cases
after they have happened. Who
knows what the future brings
to this area of urban culture.

all available surfaces. I couldn?t believe that I had been passing
