Erkki Tuomioja (SDP), the Minister for Foreign Affairs, commented
on Tuesday regarding the speech by
Russian President Vladimir Putin
on the con?ict in Crimea.
In his staunch defence of Russia?s
actions, Putin alleged that the troops
occupying the Crimean peninsula
are ?local self-defence forces?.
It is futile, Tuomioja viewed, for Putin to contest Russia?s central role in
the escalation of the crisis in Crimea.
?Both Finland and the EU hope

On Tuesday, the Minister for Foreign Affairs sat down with Alexander Rumyantsev, the Russian

THE SOCIAL Democratic Party is proposing anonymous
applications for jobs with the
state and municipalities.
Two social democratic associations from Turku and
Timo Kärkkäinen, a member
of the Kallio social democratic association, have submitted
two separate proposals on the
matter to be discussed by the
SDP party conference in May.
These proposals stand a
chance of being passed as the
party board, headed by Jutta Urpilainen, is in favour of
them.
In an anonymous job application, the applicant?s
name, address, age, sex,
place of birth, marital status,
nationality and background
are not visible to anyone handling the application.
The proposal strives to
promote an equal and unbiased recruiting process.
If municipal and state of?cials responsible for the recruitment of new employees
had to go through job applications without seeing the
name or other personal data,
they would make their choice
without necessarily knowing
whether the applicant was
young or old, man or woman,
or whether the applicant?s
name sounded foreign.
Kärkkäinen refers to a
study the Ministry of Employment and the Economy
commissioned from Helsinki University, which showed
that having a foreign-sounding name can thwart an applicant?s efforts to get a job
interview. says Antti Salminen,
the youth worker responsible for the hands-on running
of the sites.
Salminen, who is no stranger to doing graf?ti art, explains why Laitio and Saarinen
shied away from painting on
the murals in Arabianranta.
?The principle is that the

job to foster it,. he laughs.
?Words might be exchanged if you paint on top of
someone else?s painting but
nobody gets really worked up
about it.?
Showing the initiatives
The board has received altogether 203 initiatives, a large
number of which concern
working life and employment
but overall the topics range
from education to taxation.
The proposals have included giving trade unions
the right to ?le a lawsuit,
abolishing statutory sex quotas, raising the corporate tax
rate, increasing capital taxes, reinstating wealth tax,
which was abolished 2006,
increasing the guarantee on
electronics to ?ve years and
restricting the use of injunctions against industrial action. There are
usually other motivations
behind this, besides street
culture,. Vilhunen said.
In addition to these graf?ti walls, open to everyone,
street artists can get creative in the surroundings of
the Kiasma art museum and
on the walls of an art van
doing the rounds in various
events held in Helsinki.
?This is a form of youth
culture that is obviously retaining its popularity. but only for a few seconds. The best part was
the speeches and the performances,. says Laitio.
From the perspective of
the Public Works Department, authorised graf?ti
walls and other designated

ways of supporting street
art.

The same can be said
about the authorised graf?ti
walls which have not spelled
the end of illegal tagging either. Laitio
mentions.
The graf?ti walls open to
the public have gained popularity because the graf?ti
artists who are big names in
the subculture use them for
their murals.
?When you want to reach
the masses, the main thing
is that the big names become

of the sexes stands a better chance of being hired

the Dialogi project .
?These days, many people do not have clear targets
at work. The ?gure includes both paid and
unpaid overtime.
Around a third of the
members of the Federation
of Professional and Managerial Staff (YTN) do not have
their working hours monitored at all, while one in ?ve
keeps tabs on their hours
themselves. We also
take care of some work stuff
on Facebook but if I go on Facebook in my free time I don?t
clock in even if some work
things pop up.?
More unpaid
overtime than others
Many knowledge workers put in long days without
keeping record of the extra
hours and it is known that
highly quali?ed professionals do more unpaid overtime
than other employees.
Finns. It would get
too stressful. The vast majority of the members are expected to be available outside
of?ce hours.
Mykkänen is in favour of
monitoring working hours,
also in her of?cial capacity
as a representative for employees working in IT, a ?eld
that has bought into the longhours culture in a big way
and where the work is ?exible by nature.
?You could be forgiven
for thinking that as technology makes it possible to carry out the work anywhere at
any time, the working hours
could be recorded as easily,?
remarks Mykkänen.
Working
around the clock
?Death to the time card??
and ?Tasks are the new working hours.?
These are two slogans
from the Dialogi project, focusing on the improvement
of working life, which was
carried out last year.
The project promotes a
new way of thinking about
work: monitoring working hours is a historical relic from the industrial period
when workers clocked in at
factories. I frequently get ideas in my free
time and often I write them
down then and carry them
out when I?m back at work.?
Räty is capable of separating work from leisure but
for some the demarcation between the two has become
blurred.
In the Dialogi project, 31
per cent of students and 25
per cent of people in working life admitted they found
it dif?cult to turn down new
assignments even if they
were already overworked.
The thought that springs
to mind unbidden when studying these ?gures is that
white-collar workers may
be shooting themselves in
the foot when wanting to do
away with working hours,
especially as two thirds of
employees work to tight
schedules and half believe
that there is too much work
in relation to the number of
staff. This information came
out in the working condition barometer of the Ministry of Employment and the
Economy.
If we start monitoring
the carrying out of duties instead of working hours, are
we running a risk of the employee being ?exible and not
the employer?
?De?nitely,. Employees have to
learn to leave work matters
behind, to focus and stick to
their limits.
Heli Havukainen, a molecular biologist from Helsinki University, says that
laboratory work helps her
with the focusing aspect.
When she is studying samples from bacterial cultures
infecting the pupal stages of
bees under her microscope
she does not keep checking
her emails or get stressed
about other work duties.
Havukainen is passionately interested in bees and
particularly in vitellogenin, a
super protein found in them,
which can perhaps be used to
breed bees that are immune
to certain diseases.
?Working hours are not
monitored at university and
I?ve got no idea about the
hours I put in. It goes
everywhere with her as a
mobile app, as her job at the
Finnish Association of Business School Graduates (Sefe)
means she often works outside the of?ce, goes on work
trips and attends meetings
and other events, sometimes
also in the evenings and on
weekends.
In her previous job as an
aid to a Member of Parliament she did not count her
hours, which depended on
the MP?s schedule, with long
days being the norm.
?I felt a little dubious
about the time card to start
with. he comments.
On the other hand, ?exible hours and working out of
of?ce becoming more common could also spell the second coming of the time card.
Jaana Meklin, lawyer at
Akava, has noticed that monitoring working hours using
mobile apps has gradually become more commonplace in
knowledge-intensive ?elds.
Keeping tabs
Companies have realised that
work that is not tied to a time
or place must also be kept tabs
on and this is not only to stop
employees from easing off on
their work. I even
checked Wikipedia for normal working hours.?
Even though she can still
put in long days and does not
bother to calculate the overtime clocked in on work trips,
she draws a ?rm line between work and leisure.
?I don?t check my emails
unless I?m expecting a particular message. In
the interviews, 75 per cent
of students and 78 per cent
of employees said they preferred the workday to be over
after all the duties had been
completed, rather than when
the required hours had been
clocked up. BUSINESS

These days, Mykkänen is
meticulous about clocking
into work.
If some work business
crops up on her evening off
she clocks herself in using
her mobile phone, even if
the task only involves writing an email, which takes 20
minutes.
?There are still some jobs
that I don?t count. There are companies abroad where company
heads have to rein in over-enthusiastic employees.
In Germany, Volkswagen
locks the emails of their staff
half an hour after their shift
has ?nished.
In Switzerland, the investment bank Credit Suisse
has given their employees orders to stay out of the workplace between 6 pm Friday
and Sunday morning.
Meklin remembers hearing about a Finnish company
that limits their employees?
access to email during holidays to stave off the temptation to check up on work
matters during time off.
There is a limit to how
much creative workers can
be mollycoddled by the employer. Working hours
do not matter if the work is
interesting.
In creative work, it is often dif?cult to draw a line between work and free time.

compared Russian President

of Czechoslovakia?s Sudetenland as a result of the notorious Munich agreement in

Pyongyang?s nuclear provocations, and Syria?s civil war,?
according to Auslin, echoing a line of attack against
Obama that has become a
leitmotiv among his fellow

?Tyrants in places from

Its users started to look for

Kalervo Palsa?s paintings,
and offered Icelandic skyr

For two years Rämö and
Björgvin dated around the
world. It was
winter and the wind blew
30 metres in a second; hardly a climate for pushing the
strollers outside.
When the daughter was
three months old a volcano
called Eyjafjajökull erupted
in Iceland. The effects
of staying at home on pension should also be noted.
?It is more lucrative for
the stay-at-home-parent to
buy stock than new strollers,. The most
recent one was published a
few weeks ago, and it provides everyday stories on
children by women who call
themselves average moms
after spending a year with
the baby.
Rämö believes that becoming a mother does not
have to change a person. Regardless of sex
everyone stays home with
their children for some time.
The expenses are not the employer?s to pay; instead parental leave is funded much
like health insurance, by
funds paid from the wages of
employees without children
as well.
Rämö believes that spouses can well agree for the
mother to stay home with
the child for three years if the
person staying at home does
not have to pay for the child?s
clothes and other expenses
with only welfare money and
minimal income. Lives in Reykjavik with her husband and four-year-old

. ?That?s when
I thought if that?s what it is
like to coordinate work and

Rämö considers Iceland?s mandatory 3-month paternity leave for all fathers to be an excellent initiative.

Rämö thinks of the warmth

the child turned out to be a
serial killer. They placed their
daughter in the care of the
mother-in-law and drove towards the volcano. As she
left, Rämö had pumped her
breasts so that the baby
would be able to feed the entire day.
Unfortunately Rämö forgot the breast pump at home.
Rämö interviewed Icelandic
sheep breeders with a respirator and felt milk running
down her bra. Rämö says.
Then, all of a sudden,
Rämö and Björgvin?s family
no longer consisted of a resting baby, but a walking, talking small child. ?We?ll talk
about that later,. They have
as many fathers as they have
mothers there.?
Rämö believes that fathers should take care of
children at home, and it cannot be overruled by saying the man has to return to
work due to higher wages.
?Hello! That way, women?s
wages never improve.?
In Iceland the custom has
resulted in women of reproductive age no longer being
discriminated in the labour
market. Rämö always said, when conversation approached the subject
of babies.
Until one day the pregnancy test indicated that it
no longer called for discussion. They put the
baby cradle in the bedroom.
Baby fear
and opportunities
Rämö never thought that
the child would ruin her life.
Yet she was so frightened.
Frightened and annoyed.
She was annoyed by the pink
world of baby magazines
where decent mothers only
thought of what was best for
their children.
Rämö was worried about
the kind of person that was
growing inside her. She sat on the
sofa with the baby on her
chest and breast-fed. ?I stopped and thought
about my situation. As it

. The

After the exchange year
Rämö soon wanted to return
to Iceland. Interests include travel, reading and running.. Everything is conveniently located side-by-side,
and when it ends, only incredible nature lies ahead. She
traveled, worked as a partner
in a PR agency, edited business books and did writing of
her own. Also other recommendations by the so-called
good mothers have been
shunned in Rämö and Katja
Lahti?s Vuoden Mutsi books
(Mom of the Year). Or she would become a bog monster weighing a hundred kilos who
would only exude milk and be
able to breast-feed.
Blogging for baby
Early on during her pregnancy she had started to keep
a blog titled Salamatkustaja (Stowaway), where she
wrote down thoughts on her
thoughts and observations.
As it happened, she found another Finnish maternity blog
written by someone who appeared to be as confused as
she was.
The women began to comment on each other?s writings, and found that they
agreed on almost everything. Published a travel guide called Mondo Travel as well as the
maternity guides Vuoden mutsi (Avain 2012) and Vuoden

Explanations for typical teen behaviour.
?When my children put
their foot down and refused
to come to our summer cottage I realised that staying at
home alone was a rite of passage at 16. Research results show that a
teenager?s brain loses some
of its ability to recognise facial expressions.
WHEN
Why do teenagers think
they are being yelled at?
During puberty, functions
related to understanding actions and their consequences
develop rapidly in the frontal lobe of the brain, but the
transformation from childhood to adulthood does not
always proceed smoothly.
On the contrary, when new
skills are being built the old
ones sometimes have to take
a backseat.
?Studies have shown that
teenagers are less adept at
recognising facial expressions than children who are
a couple of years younger,?
explains Minna Huotilainen, research professor at the
Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
A teen?s sudden angry
outburst may be a result of
the adolescent misinterpreting a friendly or jokey comment as a snide remark.
Huotilainen gives a surprising tip for taming those
teenage temper tantrums:

Limits set by parents raise
teenagers. stress can manifest itself as sleeping patterns gone awry or tiredness
that cannot be shaken off
with any amount of sleep.
The pressures of school life
can also crop up as a regular topic of conversation for
a teen who then spends more
time on agonising over homework than actually doing it.
Alarm bells should also start
ringing if a formerly sociable
adolescent turns into a loner.
Talk about the stress and
make sure that the teen?s
days are not too actionpacked as even hobbies can
become stress factors, advises Salmela-Aro.

There are huge differences in the quality of
crushed tomatoes available in Finnish supermarkets. H T
THE NAME of the new restaurant by Tomi Björck and
Matti Wikberg, owners of
Farang and Gaijin, among
others, has been revealed as

frenzied reception from foodies, was on the

are staggering,. You can try it
yourself, just buy quality tomatoes and a run-of-themill product and compare
them side by side,. These two products are the only
ones that include salt in their
ingredients.
?Salt brings out ?avours.
It might be the salt that gave
their taste such depth,. Because of this
they will not be hungry in the
morning,. exclaims chef Henri
Alén, one of the judges on the
Helsingin Sanomat food jury.
There are a dozen or so
different types of tinned tomatoes on the table, in small
glasses from which the judges sample the products without knowing their brand
names.
The
crushed
tomatoes range in texture from
smooth to very rough-cut,
with some of the products
containing the hard, green
bits of tomatoes or pieces of
tomato skin that get caught
in the teeth.
Even though he has
named his favourite crushed
tomato product in social media and his tweets have resulted in shops running out
of Mutti?s tomato products,
Alén still seems slightly taken back by the variation in
quality.
?When you compare the
products you notice huge
differences. Alén argues that

popularity of his tomato
sauce recipe posted on Twitter: when a traditional tomato sauce is prepared using
top-notch ingredients it can
really tickle the taste buds.
After tasting the samples,
the jury adds up the scores
and ?nds a surprise winner:
ParmaSole Polpa ?ne, previously unknown to the judges.
Packed in a carton and sold
as a four-pack, the product is
imported by Ruokakesko and
can be found in Citymarkets.
Other tomatoes to receive a four-star verdict are

Pin roll it into a 0.5 cm thick rounded shape and fill the pie
pan making sure it comes
up and out the edge. Immediately, pour in the eggcrème mixture.
. Whisk as for making an omelette.
. Sprinkle
the flour and pour in the
milk until obtaining a thick
paste.
. Wrap it in plastic and keep it in the fridge for about one
hour.
. In a bowl, whisk the eggs with the cream, 0.5 tsp of salt
and a dash of pepper. Prebake it for about 10 min at
150-160°C.
. Massage the mixture with your hands until it?s crumbly. Again, these ingredients should never ?nd
their way into a true quiche
Lorraine.
Fact is, the basic recipe is
so versatile that today it has
limitless possibilities. Take the dough out of the fridge and roll it on a floured surface into a 0.5 cm thick rounded shape.
. For the dough: Mix the flour with the butter in a bowl. Defrost the puff pastry
for 1-2 hours. Strain them and peel their skin
with a knife. Add
some salt and water and continue kneading until the dough
is uniform and a ball can be formed.
. Add the tomato pulp and the grated
cheese. Add salt if needed.
. Place the rolled dough onto the oiled tart pan, making sure
the dough goes up and out the edges. Top the quiche with the grated cheese and bake at about
200°C for 20-25 minutes.
Quiche orientale
Ingredients: 200g of frozen puff, pastry, 100g butter,
150g finely chopped onions,
100g finely chopped garlic, 2 tbsp all-purpose flour,
240ml milk, 100g of grated
cheese, 5 egg yolks, 2 tsp of
ground paprika.
Ingredients: 200g all-purpose flour, 100g butter, 125g
smoked ham (regular ham can also work), 4 eggs, 500g cherry tomatoes, 200ml cream, 60g cheese, 20 green olives, salt
and pepper.
Instructions:
. Put the tomatoes in a mixer or cut them finely
with a knife, almost like pulp.
. Some
recipes call for shredded
cheese . Bake in oven at 240°C for about 30 minutes.
. Bon appétit!
VA L É R I E B RU N
Time to rediscover the quiche
Lorraine culinary family
Instructions:
. Make holes around
the dough with a fork and pre-bake it for about 10 minutes.
. Once baked, place the green olive, either sliced or whole,
around the quiche.
Quiche estivale. Today, it has
conquered France as a light
lunch or hearty appetizer.
The recipe has stood the
test of time to become part
of the department?s culinary heritage. Given the history and the location of the
region (Alsace-Lorraine) it
comes to no surprise that
Germany had an in?uence in
Lorraine kitchens.
In fact, as far back as 1550,
quiches regaled the royal
court in Nancy, but the quiche
Lorraine that we know today only goes as far back as
the 19th century. Bake until
the top is golden brown.
Instructions:
. Swiss, Gruyère, or
Emmental. Pour this mixture onto the
pan and place it at the bottom of the oven. Wrap it in plastic and keep it in the fridge for about one
hour.
. Add
some salt and water and continue kneading until the dough
is uniform and a ball can be formed.
. Massage the mixture with your hands until it?s crumbly. Pour boiling water onto the tomatoes and let them rest in
there for a few minutes. All quiches
are to be enjoyed hot or lukewarm with a nice green salad
and ahem, a nice glass of red
wine. Take the dough out of the fridge and roll it on a floured surface into a 0.5 cm thick rounded shape.
. Place the ham bites
on top of it and immediately, pour in the egg-crème mixture.
. Meanwhile, gently fry the bacon bits in a pan at medium
heat for a few minutes and take them away from the stove.
. Time evolves,
and with it, culinary history
keeps on growing, opening
our eyes to new ?avourful
inventions.
Natives of Lorraine say

crème fraîche and not liquid cream, let alone milk,
like some recipes suggest.
The same issue is found with
the addition of cheese. Take away from heat and
add the cheese, egg yolks,
garlic and ground paprika.
?Mix well.
. For the dough: Mix the flour with the butter in a bowl. In a bowl of your electric mixer, mix the eggs with the crème
and add some pepper. 16
