How did Joseph Ratzinger
imprint his conservatism on
Latin America and Brazil?
I do not say that Benedict XVI
continued the policies of John
Paul II (1978-2005) because,
in fact, it was Ratzinger who
inspired and provided the
theoretical background to
the conservative measures
taken by Karol Wojtyla, the
Polish Pope.
They both refused to implement the decisions of

Conference of Bishops, which
had a prophetic voice during
the 1964-1985 military dictatorship and up to the 1990s,
has now withdrawn into the
sacristy, and has ceased to be
the voice of the voiceless.. The Catholic Church does not even
know how to cope with the
new digital technologies that
are essential for the task of
evangelising. Benedict XVI, on the
other hand, was never sensitive to social issues.
What course will progressive approaches within the
Church be able to take after
his resignation, such as liberation theology, which attained great weight in Latin
America?
The progressive approach persists at the base of the Catholic
Church, in the basic Christian
communities and the pastoral
ministries (for workers, indigenous people, the elderly and
others), and in the writings of
liberation theologians. The only difference the resignation of Benedict XVI as head of the Catholic Church will make in Brazil will
be the name changes needed on posters advertising his going to Rio de Janeiro in July for the
World Youth Day, says Frei Betto.

What will the repercussions
be for the Catholic Church,
especially in Brazil and
the rest of Latin America,
of Pope Benedict XVI?s announcement of his resignation on Monday 11 February?
I think that for Brazil, in
particular, the only consequence will be having to redo all the publicity for World
Youth Day, to be held in 2328 July in Rio de Janeiro, and
replacing images of Benedict XVI with those of his
successor, who will be elected in March.
The abdication itself will
have no major effects. However, the
Catholic Church is still loaded down with mediaeval baggage, such as the division of
territories into parishes, and
it barely enters into dialogue
with modernity.
Hence its dif?culty with
understanding and entering modernity. The
election of a new Pope could,
depending on the direction in
which he steers the Catholic
Church.
In that sense, can we look
forward to a modernisation
of the Church?
I am not optimistic, for the
following reasons: Benedict
XVI will have a major role in
the election of the next Pope.
And he has decided to contin-
ibacy, the ordination of women to the priesthood, condom
use, stem cell research, gay
unions, and etcetera.
Only after Benedict XVI
dies will we really know what
the new Pope thinks and
wants.
We are experiencing a change of epoch,
from modernity to postmodernity. However, this progressive structure has lost the support of
bishops and cardinals in the
last few decades.
The last Brazilian census
indicated that the Catholic
Church lost 1.7 million adherents between 2000 and
2010. This is where
the Neo-Pentecostal churches shine, although their content is alienating.
Given this context, what potential for reversing the decline in numbers of the faithful
in Brazil does the Catholic
Church have with a new Pope?
The Catholic Church in Brazil has become increasingly Vaticanised. a conference held 50 years ago! They
both ruled out progressive
bishops and appointed conservatives; they gave more
importance to movements
like the (ultra-conservative)
Opus Dei than to pastoral
ministry to the poor or basic
Christian communities. And
they both held Eurocentric
worldviews.
The difference is that John
Paul II?s head was on the right
but his heart was on the left,
that is, he was doctrinally
conservative but progressive
on social issues, to the point
of criticising neoliberalism
and praising the Cuban revolution. It appears that the Church is at
risk of having, for a time, dual power.

that contrary to the goals of

?Preparatory education is
too often taken to mean language training, but there are

seven for roles

Seven people have been
apprehended on suspicion of drug offences as
part of a preliminary investigation into an amphetamine traf?cking

Turun Sanomat reported
on 27 February. The main
suspect, a 42-year-old
man from Turku, is believed to have orchestrated the sale of nearly ?ve
kilos of amphetamine to a
40-year-old man. The police believe the narcotics
were smuggled into the
country by the Bandidos
motorcycle club. He
then waited for his mother to
fall asleep, fetched the ?rearms and, despite falling over
on his scooter on the way, returned to central Hyvinkää.
After climbing onto the roof of
a building, he listened to music, updated his social media
pro?le and phoned his friends.
He prepared for nearly half
an hour before squeezing the
trigger for the ?rst time, observing the people outside.
His intention was to hit someone with every shot.
As a result, the court dismissed the defence?s plea to
reduce the charges to counts
of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter.
Criminal liability may

In a psychological examination, the defendant was ruled
criminally liable and capable
of controlling his actions and

7 . Rob Bonner, the task force co-chair
and a former commissioner of US Customs and Border
Protection, said Wednesday.
?Migration remains one
of the most important features of the US-Mexico relationship, but beyond political
rhetoric it has played a smaller part of the policy agenda
between our two countries.
Now, both domestically and
bilaterally,
implementing
comprehensive immigration
reform is within our grasp.?
When it was created, the
principle objective of the
task force was to introduce
a set of policy recommendations for both governments
on how to strengthen border
security and cooperation, focusing on public safety, migration, facilitation of legal
transit and commerce, economic development and border institutions.
The COMEXI report, initially published in 2009, was widely welcomed by government
of?cials in both countries.
?The task force outline posed a speci?c set of
approaches in looking at
border management,. Wilson says. the spokesperson said, even though ?he
is right to say that one tree
does not make a forest.
?However we, the people
who are up in arms in indignation, are increasingly the
forest,. Hundreds
of young people are using paint
and walls of urban buildings
across the country as a form of
protest against the neoliberal
free market policies of the government of Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho. Its members
suggest, for instance, that the
two countries jointly develop a plan for better managing
the relaxation of US federally imposed restrictions on legitimate commerce between
border communities.
?The border should be as
thin as technologically and
politically possible for those
engaged in legitimate travel
or commerce while remaining dif?cult to penetrate for
those engaged in criminal activity or unauthorized transit,. the spokesperson
concluded.

Singing and painting murals are used as objection tactics against
the neoliberal policies in Portugal.
in parliament, the prime minister and other government
of?cials have been repeatedly interrupted in public by
demonstrators singing the
symbolic song, all around the
country.
Another creative form of
protest emerged three weeks
ago, when the tax of?ce began to receive electronic invoices in the name, and with
the tax identi?cation number, of Pedro Passos Coelho.
Previously, cash register receipts served as automatic tax declarations for
shopkeepers. Wilson says.
The task force says more
needs to be done to fully realise the potential econom-
ic partnership. Christopher Wilson, an associate
at the Mexico Institute of the
Woodrow Wilson Centre, a
think tank here, said.
?Many of them fell under the category of shared
responsibility, looking at
transnational
challenges, taking responsibility for
them and then ?nding ways
to work together for a common solution.?
Wilson says the new setup replaced an older model
of the bilateral relationship
in which one party would
typically blame the other for
challenges in dealing with
the border.
?Look at the example of
drugs and weapons smuggling,. one of the organisers
said. Democracy
does not just mean voting every four years, they argue.
One example is Marquês da
Fronteira Avenue, one of Lisbon?s main arteries, where dozens of people responded to a
call by the Associação de Combate à Precariedade (Association to Combat Job Insecurity)
and Precários In?exíveis (In?exible Precarious Workers),
gathering on 24 February to
paint huge murals about the
crisis, in an atmosphere of festive solidarity.
On the murals, the two
groups also called for people
to come out for a demonstration on 2 March without the
involvement of political parties or trade unions.
Another novel form of
protest arose in the pub-
lic galleries of parliament on
15 February, when a group
of people attending the debates, headed by well-known
singer-songwriter
Carlos
Mendes, spontaneously began to sing Grândola, Vila Morena, a symbol of the
peaceful carnation revolution that, on 25 April, 1974
overthrew the dictatorship
that came to power in 1926.
The action in parliament
was the result of ?a group of
activists on the day of the
fortnightly plenary debate,
who interrupted the prime
minister?s speech by singing Grândola at the very moment that the government
party was making its point,?
Mendes said. A mixture of ingenuity, humour
and nostalgia for the good old
days is the recipe that wide
sectors of society are following to express their outrage
in the face of the social and
economic debacle.
In the conservative government?s year and a half in
of?ce, the unemployment
rate has climbed from 11 to
16.9 per cent, while GDP fell
by 3.2 per cent in 2012 and
one-quarter of the population of 10.6 million are facing
poverty and social exclusion.
Painting murals, which was
popular three decades ago, is
making a comeback. he said.
Mendes
particularly
stressed that ?there were no
insults or strong words; we
simply sang, and the head
of government had to stop
speaking, drowned out by
the chorus of voices singing
Grândola, Vila Morena.?
In the two weeks that
have passed since the protest
cept of the 21st century border?, a concept he notes was
adopted by Mexican President Felipe Calderon and
Barack Obama in 2010 and
was largely envisioned by the
task force report.
?The idea is that you can
have security gains without sacri?cing the ef?ciency
of moving people and commerce and still have joint
economic prosperity,. ?It all took
place in the context of actions planned to call people?s
attention to the criminal austerity that is being imposed
on us,. Bonner said.
shops and small businesses by providing a small tax
rebate to customers who
give their names and tax ID
number.
But by the end of the third
week of February, the tax of?ce web site began to collapse
under the ?ood of thousands
of receipts with the prime
minister?s name and tax
identi?cation number.
The protest operation was
coordinated through the Facebook page as faturas do
coelho (Coelho?s receipts),
and now emails and text messages are also circulating the
tax identi?cation numbers of
Finance Minister Vítor Gaspar, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Miguel Relvas
and Justice Minister Paula
Teixeira da Cruz.
The as faturas do coelho account is the result of ?a
much wider movement that
goes far beyond a Facebook
page,. For instance, the US and Mexican
federal governments have
made large investments in
staf?ng, infrastructure and
technology and have refocused cooperation on security efforts.
Task force members
say that several issues remain outstanding, however, including better law
enforcement against illegal migration and weapons
smuggling, as well as environmental issues like illicit dumpsites, pollution and
the reintroduction of native
trees.
Dealing responsibly with
the migration issue is particularly pressing, the task
force says, noting that of the
hundreds of thousands of
people who cross the border
illegally each year, the vast
majority are economic migrants from Mexico seeking
work.
They propose that Mexico and the United States establish a joint commission of
economists, demographers,
business and labour leaders
to analyse the labour market
effects of these long-term
demographic trends and economic integration.

of?cial lending programs to prop up those countries
who can?t borrow on the open market. Yet the Italian election might be a warning sign of a crisis in European democracy.
VOTERS are beginning to become weary of the policies

in this climate, organisations such as the
European Central Bank have amassed a great deal of
power and are able to dictate these policies. It does
not differentiate between
different kinds of output,
and may be unreliable because of the grey economy.
Activities which do not generate income, such as charity or domestic work, are not

In addition, an increase

As an example, imagine a person who lives one block away

almost 26% of the vote on an anti-establishment platform. It
measures one simple indicator, economic output, and
ignores others, such as assets and liabilities. In 2004 Wen Jiabao

police and defence spending.
It would add household activities, illegal production and

A popular newcomer for

sport has evolved furthest in
Finland and Sweden. Researchers
studied the relationships
between 43 fathers, aged
45 to 70, and their respective daughters, aged at
least 22, attempting to ?nd
out how sports had in?uenced their relationships
in the past. According to the Professional Disc
Golf Association, the number
of disc golf courses has tripled since 2000.
It is played with much the
same rules as golf, only with
a frisbee. All of them,
who came from different
backgrounds, agreed that
practicing a sport jointly
had been the most important turning point in their
relationship.
Female respondents
agreed that the activity taught them to take
chances and to stand up
for themselves, while enjoying exclusive quality
time with their fathers.
In turn, fathers mentioned the unique bond
that they established with
their daughters, a connection they did not share
with anyone else in the
family. The courses usually
have 9 or 18 holes and are located in park areas with versatile terrains and natural
obstacles.
Meeri, 23, does disc golf
from spring to autumn, up
to twice a week. We can achieve
this by allowing a period
of 2-3 hours between eating and training. It is
well known that high-impact sports such as boxing can cause severe brain
damage, but the effects of
less violent activities such
as football heading is still
unclear.

that if they lift weights,
they will bulk up.
These fears are unfounded as women lack
comparable amounts of
testosterone, an important muscle-building hormone, as men. While modern disc golf has
been around since the early
1960s, it has gained momentum recently. In 2004 Finland got
its ?rst laughter yoga trainers, and in 2009 Finland had

Popping involves the tensing and releasing of muscles

Frozen food may not count as haute cuisine,

TEEMU HENRIK SSON
HEL SINKI TIMES
THE USEFULNESS of frozen
food products should be evident to anyone who has ever added frozen vegetables
into a wok, sprinkled frozen berries onto their morning porridge, or discovered
a forgotten ready-made pizza in the freezer when thinking that there?s just nothing
to eat.
And the bene?ts of a
freezer do not stop there:
Finns are particularly fond of
freezing foodstuff, whether
self-picked berries or game
meat, as a way of preserving food. In
some cases such vegetables
retain their nutrients bet-
ter than vegetables that are
stored and unprocessed for
long periods of time.?
Good for you
As proof of the nutritional values that their products

is actually fresh,. says Riikka Haarasilta-Suutarinen,

Moreover, in order to retain maximum nutritional
values, many frozen products
are processed as quickly as
possible, and farmed close to

when vegetables are quickly processed and frozen after
collecting, using an industrial freezing system.?
The key here is industrial freezing, which differs greatly from freezing at
home. So, good for you and
simple to use . For example most
berry-pickers freeze a major
part of their crop, to be en-
joyed after the berry season
has long passed.
There is, however, a persistent suspicion that frozen
ingredients are notably less
healthy than freshly bought
ones. ?Peas are a
good example: our domestic
peas are frozen within two
hours after harvesting. ?Home freezers freeze
the food slowly, leaving water molecules big which, for
example, changes the consistency of ?sh. Industrial freezing is immediate,
and water molecules are left
small and thus don?t have the
same effect,. In fact, the difference
between the two is not as
great as some imagine, and
in some cases it can be that
the opposite is true: frozen
ingredients sometimes contain better nutritional value.
?If vegetables are frozen when fresh, their nutritional value tends not to
drop much,. In reality, the
cold chain that reaches from
the factory to the consumer?s
freezer is suf?cient to preserve the food.
Part of the picture is also the way frozen food is defrosted, which has an impact
on the foodstuff. +358 (0)20 7424 290
