sums will be up for grabs this weekend in the Finnish lottery, and new transnational Eurojackpot, with a potential 37.5 million euro to be won. They are a clearer display of the agenda of Finland's new foreign policy. Tuomioja's programme has included several international meetings and conferences. Regardless, her gig at Olympic Stadium promises to be one to remember at least for the super stage show and her classic playlist. Also, Friday's Eurojackpot will feature a
pot of 26 million euro, making it the highest sum ever to be competed for in the competition which started in March this year. Next Sunday's Finnish Lotto jackpot amounts to a record-breaking 11.5 million euro, as no one won the 7 million pot last Sunday. The aim is to get companies to invest in Finland in the future as well, and also to find Finland's strengths in competition for international business. However, this is not the whole truth. "It's pointless to go somewhere just for the sake of travelling. Europe has also been prominent in other travel choices. As an example of this development, he mentions President Sauli Niinistö's thoughts on attracting foreign companies and investment to Finland last Thursday in Hamina. Foreign policy becoming more economics-driven has not affected Minister of Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja's (Social Democratic Party) choices of travel destination. "Foreign Trade Minister Alexander Stubb's visits are more relevant. Page 8

Smells like summer No single smell quite sums up the Finnish summer as much as that of barbeque, or grilli. This is because no outright winner has been seen in past 12 weeks. Charly Salonius-Pasternak, a researcher in the Finnish Institute of International Affairs considers Tuomioja's travel programme to be sensible. The previous highest total jackpot recorded in Lotto was 11.3 million euro, which was divided equally between two winners just last month. Large winnings will go out in Eurojackpot regardless if there is an outright winner with seven correct numbers, as the 26 million will be
distributed to those with the nexthighest correct numbers. Page 15

Hiski Haukkala, professor of international politics at University of Tampere says Finland has recently redefined its policy regarding foreign affairs.
EU foreign policy in crisis In Haukkala's opinion, Finland has recently redefined its course of action in foreign policy.
"At some point, EU's common foreign and security policy had become a substitute for Finland's own foreign policy," Haukkala says. However, readers should not get overexcited as the chances of winning the Eurojackpot are some 1 in 59.3 million and of winning the Finnish Lotto a mere 1 in 15 million.. According to Haukkala, EU's shared foreign policy is in crisis, because the union's strength has been sapped by its efforts to survive the economical crisis.
"The more independent approach has also been apparent in Russian relations," Salonius-Pasternak says. Whether public barbeques or the summer cottage sizzle, Finns just love to eat outdoors. During this parliamentary term, he
has made 44 foreign visits, of which ten have been to meetings of EU foreign ministers. Page 10

EVEN worse than the direct impact this laissez-faire approach to eradicating doping has on sports competition is how it affects public perception. Fewer athletes are getting through the cracks with the new tools at our disposal. On a macro level, this is a far more effective way of getting at the problem than having athletes pee in bottles or provide blood samples and hoping that you get the timing right. It is in fact encouraged by unscrupulous professionals, corrupt sports organisations and indeed facilitated by some governments.

Deputy Prosecutor General Jorma Kalske does not wish to draw conclusions from statistics alone.
Utriainen says that the handling of all rape charges should now be more thoroughly investigated, both on the part of the incidents, as well as the role of the investigators. The comments came only a few days after Monti and the prime minister of Finland Jyrki Katainen lauded the mutual understanding established during Monti's visit to Finland. According to Monti, "There are a few countries and they lie to the north of Germany who every time we have reached a consensus at the European Council, then say things two days later that call this consensus into question." Deputy Prosecutor General Jorma Kalske told Helsingin Sanomat that the situation raises the suspicion that the threshold for bringing charges is not the same throughout the country. In addition, the prime minister called for concerted communication practices to prevent further disturbances in the market. The Prosecutor's Office of Helsinki brought charges on 66 per cent of the suspected rapes considered for charges in the years 2006-2011. "Conclusions cannot be drawn on statistics alone. According to Utriainen, the threshold for bringing charges is higher in the east and north than in the south and west of Finland. Included in the examination are all suspected crimes sent by the police to be considered for charges, which have been recorded as aggravated rape, rape or sexual assault.

Meanwhile, according to Yle, the stores in the Silicon Valley and Boston are expected to stir interest from the technology companies and the academia of Harvard and MIT, respectively. "High-profile celebrity lectures and world-class universities are simply not enough." According to Mokka, lifelong learning is the key to adapting to the constant changes in working life and society. Räsänen states that difficulties with mathematics can be very problematic when choosing a career path. The stability mechanism is designed to function as a firewall that prevents the escalation of the debt crisis. What are my special skills. What would I like to learn. According to Finland's Minister of Finance, Jutta Urpilainen (SDP), the eurozone countries are preparing to implement the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) in late September, pending a ruling from the Germany Federal Constitutional Court and a subsequent ratification by the country. Nowadays, people may consider entering the caring professions but miscalculating doses for medication and confusing measurements can pose a risk to patient safety. There are no guidelines on remedial education in mathematics and schools are left to deal with the situations on the basis of what they see as important and how good their teachers' teaching skills are. Even the extra tuition does not help all pupils, however hard the child works. According to Räsänen, dyslexia is easier to get on top of than problems with mathematics. "The warm period we had in mid-May had many bees flying to and from the hive," Malkki says. They didn't find many cons. Less traditional flavours might appear on the menus of the marketplace stands, as well as another delicacy, muikku, or vendace, small whitefish fried crisp and eaten hot with a squeeze of lemon and perhaps a creamy, garlicky sauce. 14

As one of the seats of power along the Swedish-Russian border, Olavinlinna attracted settlement, and the city of Savonlinna was founded in 1639, becoming the scene of much conflict over the years until it was captured by Russian forces in 1743. Animal lovers have a real treat in store as well, with rides in horse-drawn sleighs and husky safaris to be had. Long-distance buses are also available. However, it is important to remember that bees are living creatures and therefore their care must be taken as seriously as that of any pet."

We have been fascinated to observe the bees going about their business, but it is still a bit difficult to identify the different kind and ages of bees, what they are doing and what the different cells are. The fun doesn't stop in wintertime visitors can experience ice climbing, ice golf and curling, in addition to the usual Finnish favourites of ice swimming and ice fishing. · Approximately 2,600 beekeepers are members of the Finnish Beekeepers' Association. All in all, Savonlinna is a great place to take in the wonders of Finnish lakelands, architecture and culture.. It is the most northerly still-extant medieval stone castle, and hosts a castle museum depicting its dramatic history, as well as an Orthodox museum that features religious artifacts from both Finland and Russia. Nevertheless, the city is still worth a visit, even if the official season is over. Not to mention the fact that honey is a super food extremely nutritious and used for millennia as a cure for many ailments. Flybe operates regular flights to Savonlinna airport, and the train takes just four and a half hours. Boating, canoeing and fishing are good ways to spend a warm summer's day. Visitors can even rent a seaplane from the harbour in the town centre and take a flight around the archipelago. Supposedly, people can get at least twenty kilograms of honey and up to fifty or sixty in a good year. The area offers superb hiking and biking trails amidst the groves and islands of Linnansaari National Park, where you can even take a ride on Icelandic horses. "Apart from animal lovers in general, we are also interested in ecology and green living and increasing our selfsustainability in small ways," Malkki explains. "We have long discussed the possibility of keeping chickens, for example."
Malkki and Watts discovered they had a local bee association that sponsored courses for aspiring beekeepers. "Actually, beekeeping is not very time-consuming or expensive, relatively speaking," says Watts. They took a course early this year, continued their research and weighed the pros and cons. They are indispensable in some forms of agriculture, but their dwindling populations because of Colony Collapse Disorder has led to some extreme measures, such as hand-pollinating fruit trees in some regions of China. "You know what we should get?" he asked. "I was also surprised to learn that Finnish legislation actually supports smallscale beekeeping," continues Malkki. singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Tomas Ledin arrives in Helsinki Sunday 12 August for a performance at Finlandia-talo. Etno-Espa will also be featured during the Night of the Arts on 23 August, with Ostrobothnia's Zwei Mannborgs, the chamber pop of Finnish-American musician Vuk and the ethno-prog sounds of ensemble Alamaailman Vasarat on offer. Young John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) was once a small boy who wished that his teddy were real only this time, it really happens! Some 27 years later, Ted is a beer-swilling, bong-huffing, hooker-entertaining slob who won't get off the couch except to drive John to work. Things then draw to a close with a club night on 24 August at Siltanen, where with Never Again, Ledin had another hit in Europe. This year's festival boasts a range of contemporary folk music, with a special focus
on the harmonium. The native Michigander has courted controversy at every turn of a career that has seen her sell some 300 million albums since she came onto the music scene in the early `80s, and continues to weather all the criticism that seasonally floods her way. After the recent furore over the extremely brief show she performed at Paris' legendary Olympia, it seems that Madonna can do no right in the eyes of media not that she'd pay this much heed. Its Spanish version would go on to top the charts in Chile. However, after struggling to maintain consistent success outside Scandinavia, Ledin eventually hung up the microphone in 1984 and turned his attention to producing. Aided by winning performances by Wahlberg and Kunis, and some thick Boston accents, the film also reveals its soft side amidst the one-liners and odd celebrity cameos. These stunts look like a grab at relevancy in the light of Lady Gaga's popularity. Teaming up with ABBA's Agnetha Fältskog in 1982 Founded in 1974, their fusion of blues, rock & roll, and R&B brought Texas roadhouse music to the masses, and helped kick start a blues revival during the `80s with tracks such as Tuff Enuff. But what if we were unable to let them go when we grew up, and they continued to play a major part in our lives. While a sappy ending threatens to derail proceedings, it does not undermine the previous ninety minutes' joviality. It turns out that Ted's walking and talking abilities made him a minor celebrity back in the day, before the spotlight eventually dimmed. They have performed numerous sold-out gigs here since their first appearance in 1983.

Finnish berry picking left for foreigners
Finns have been less than enthusiastic in picking berries professionally, YLE reports. The right to barbecue is something many Finns feel strongly about, and heated arguments surround the topic of balcony grilling. A disposable grill is a set feature for any picnic group, and on weekend afternoons every park and beach smells of slightly burned sausages and lighter fluid. But according to the law barbecuing on a balcony can only be banned if it is a risk to fire safety, for example if the balcony structure is made out of wood. Apparently junk food is a common way for the athletes to garner enough calories to successfully stroke their way through the swimming competitions of the Olympics. Helsinki Times looks at what is on offer at the Helsinki Festival from Apocalyptica to Zap Mama and we preview ska/reggae legends Toots and the Maytals gig at the Circus. Whether it was riding a bike in freezing conditions, ice harshly threatening to take me down, or enduring a few more seconds while furiously trying to keep my balance on my skis, they all contributed to me fully enjoying, fully living Finland, and letting its spirit conquer me to its fullest. E mail us at su for the little while longe your paper there ll redirect times.fi, and we wi lidays. As with all newcomers, I was enchanted by the mystery of the Finnish language, the magic of the snowy Nordic forest, and, above all, the Finns truly amazing, unique people. I even started to question the very existence of Jyväskylä itself. Grocery stores in the Helsinki Central Railway Station tunnel are open Mon-Sat 7-22 and Sun 10-22. I felt divinely lucky to be a part of this, experiencing everything from sauna to salmiakki and from juhannus to ice fishing. The everyday routine was bound to be broken by the discovery of new, fresh things: among others, the friendliness and hospitality of the Finnish people. Dial 112. Celebrating three years of Chinese holistic massage in Helsinki
Three years ago we began offering our services in Helsinki our third year of working together for health and well-being!
Our broad selection of regenerating, stress-removing and revitalizing treatments has been very well received in Finland. Most grocery stores are open Mon-Fri 7-21, Sat 7-18 and Sun 12-21. After all, I could find no sign of human life anywhere; all I could see was a huge, seemingly deserted natural park. I have indeed experienced a lot during those times spent in Central Finland the palette of emotions I have felt, the warmth of the people I have met, the values of life I have since learned. The Forex desk at Helsinki Central Railway Station is open Mon-Sun 8-21. I feel that there was no best source of satisfaction for me than to finally climb the steep mountain called "the Finnish language" and proudly declare at its peak my triumph: "Kyllä, osaan suomea".
But then, there is undeniably nothing more beautiful than a lake in the quietness of the light-filled summer nights as the sun sets. Restaurants. Finland has never ceased to fill me with happiness and serenity. We welcome You to experience the beneficial effects of our treatments on your health and well-being and to breathe new life into the spring together!
