TODAY, the Finns Party is bigger than ever before and there are hundreds of new members. But what are the targets of our criticism. Instead, our seats came from other parties that are supported and favoured by many journalists. Immigrants. Often I am also quite frustrated when some authors are disparaging our party just because they cannot accept our success. Immigration is one example of this phenomenon; a sceptical stance towards the European Union is another.
ONE PROMINENT Finnish politician said last year that the Finns Party despises democracy. And it is true: that is what we are. Even common sense tells us that something is terribly wrong in these kinds of situations. 2

no. Soini rose to prominence when he became party secretary of the Finnish Rural Party, a position he held from 1992 to 1995 before the party was discontinued. Well, it would be nice to ask the same people whether they still stick to their views after the police announced in autumn that the number of racist crimes had decreased in the metropolitan area.
HOWEVER ,
PARTLY,
the critique focused on us may also stem
nobody can deny that immigration has been and still is an important issue for many Finns Party members. Next week: Paavo Arhinmäki (LA).
Introducing Timo Soini
One of two party leaders running in this year's presidential election, the Finns Party's (PS) Timo Soini is one of the serious contenders for a place in the second round against Sauli Niinistö (NCP). What the party criticises is Finnish immigration policy. The majority of new Finns would most probably favour zero tolerance on exploitation because such misdemeanours often stigmatise all immigrants. The mother and the daughter of a foreign family are expelled because one representative of the authorities thinks that the father does not earn enough money by working hard. So, the critique is understandable albeit unfair.
like to argue that the increasing support of our party has had a significant influence on the amount of racist crime. Unfortunately, some Finnish citizens have thought that the blame lies with immigrants although it actually lies with those natives who have understated our Finnish culture. Soon after, Soini helped found PS and became its leader in 1997. At the same time, a murderer or a rapist is allowed to stay. I have never heard any immigrant accuse Finnish society for being Finnish. Asylum seekers need to wait years for a final decision. Foreign people overall. Some people have been living here for 10 years and they still need interpreters when dealing with the authorities. I hope I can see Finland as a thriving, innovative and international country that comprehends its global responsibility and is willing to help those who need our help. And, as a matter of fact, many immigrants even agree with me.
IN MANY cases, people who move here to work face ridiculous hindrances and insurmountable obstacles. Some Finnish people are obsessed by the idea that everyone should share the same views and opinions. This kind of message may be unconventional in the Finnish political sphere, but it certainly does not imply contempt for democracy. Immigrants are people, and every single one of them is an invaluable individual totally unique and indispensable.
I hear or read about Finns Party members or supporters being accused of xenophobia or racism, dejection fills my heart. Is that justifiable. And that, again, would nurture an even more positive Finnish attitude.
IT IS UNLIKELY that immigrants would want to settle in a country where they are despised and treated as secondclass citizens. The Finns Party has been demonised because we refuse to narrow our minds and because we are not afraid to bring up difficult and delicate issues. Although the themes mentioned above are crucial and I cannot deny it close to my heart, I believe that many readers of Helsinki Times would rather learn more about my ideas concerning immigration, racism and the Finns Party policy. Or at least that is something that countless journalists and papers have implicitly told me. The party leader is inevitably some kind of a role model and that is a task I want to perform with flying colours. Even though I am the leader of our group, I cannot visit every single individual and teach him or her how to behave. If you cannot vote for Timo Soini and the Finns Party, vote for someone else. If you do not vote, you are not counted. This is the second time Soini has run for president. Our party seems and sounds critical. With last year's parliamentary elections approaching, Soini decided to return to Finnish domestic politics. I HONESTLY believe that there would be much less tension between different
from the Finnish desire for national consensus. My message has also been loud and clear: if you are a racist, do not vote for us. That is why the attitude of the original population is crucial when we attempt to integrate the heterogeneous group of immigrants successfully. ONE UNFORTUNATE thing that stimulates prejudices towards immigrants is that in some cases it is the Finnish culture that has been treated disparagingly. After leading his party to election success last year, Soini is looking to keep this momentum up with a good showing for PS in 2012's presidential and municipal elections. But later I had second thoughts. They acknowledge that there are some individual immigrants who try to exploit the Finnish welfare system and who do not want to settle in. Mauno Koivisto, the former president of Finland, once said that one should not be provoked when others provoke. In both 2009 and 2011, Soini won the most votes of any one candidate. The Finns Party does not hate anyone.
CRITICS
ethnic groups in this country were immigration policy more sensible and fairer in the eyes of both immigrants and Finnish citizens. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have encouraged all people to vote. In that case, our new neighbours would feel more welcome and obviously their desire to integrate into Finnish society would also grow. THE FINNS Party has plenty of immigrant supporters who encourage us to keep on developing Finland's immigration policy. That, apparently, is not the best possible attitude either. The size of Parliament did not grow by the same number. In 2006, he came fifth (of eight candidates) in the first round of voting, gaining 3.4 per cent of the vote.
Timo Soini Presidential candidate for the Finns Party (PS).
Finnish immigration
It is Finland's immigration policies not immigrants themselves that are the focus of the Finns Party's criticism, argues the party's leader and presidential candidate, Timo Soini.
MY ORIGINAL idea for this column was to write about the European Union, the euro, the financial crisis and federalism. I believe that the best I can do is to give all of our supporters, members and MPs a good example. Unfortunately, some comments and statements from several supporters appear to be somewhat disrespectful, offensive and
tasteless, as well as against our party's agenda. I also hope that even more natives would tolerate those who cherish Finnish culture, our habits and traditions, conservative, Christian values and even those who have decided to vote for the Finns Party. And preferably, vote for not against someone. In a way, that is understandable: the Finns Party gained 34 more seats in the last general election. To my mind, that is an excellent piece of advice, but sadly not all of our support-
ers agree. He became an MP in 2003 and was reelected in 2007 before being elected to the European Parliament in 2009. We live together, side by side, in this wonderful country and fair welfare state.
I HOPE. No, no,
that after six years, when our next president is about to finish his or her first term, even more Finns would have realised how valuable immigrants and our new neighbours are. They understand that in Finnish society people abide by the Finnish norms and rules.
I LIVED
in Belgium for two years and it was crystal clear for me that I obeyed Belgian law and did not expect the society to "finlandise" itself.
FINALLY, I have noticed that some seem to regard immigrants as "play things", who just spice up our everyday lives. I think it is. More sensible and fairer immigration policy would encourage Finnish citizens to acquire a more positive attitude towards immigrants

However, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Communications noted in a statement the following day that this is already possible under the existing law, which in addition to allowing electricity cables also allows natural gas and heating pipes to be un alongside roadways. A comprehensive underground cabling network is best seen as a long-term goal, according to Häkämies. Efforts are already underway at the Ministry of Transport and Communications to
determine whether current legislation can be amended to allow the possible need for electric cabling to be taken into account in state acquisitions of land for roads. The authorities have spurred electricity and telecommunications providers to get their act together. A major advantage of placing above-ground electric cabling along roadways is that the risk of trees falling on the lines would be far less than in areas where trees are left standing on both sides of the lines. According to Häkämies, the legislation covering roadways should be changed to allow both underground and above-ground electric cables to be placed along roadsides. Ministries have their wires crossed over power lines
The law should be changed to allow cables to be laid alongside roadways, declares Minister for Employment and the Economy Jyri Häkämies. The ability of nuclear power plants to cope with extremely threatening situations achieved greater urgency following extensive damage to the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan last spring. Putting electricity cables below ground is the obvious solution, but is extremely expensive and could take even decades to carry out nationwide. Locating and repairing damaged stretches of overhead line would also be far easier. The Commission will then issue its Union-wide statement on the matter at the EU summit in June. In such cases, a wider expanse of land would have to be purchased than would be necessary for roadbuilding alone. The Accident Investigation Board of Finland's director Veli-Pekka Nurmi believes that it should not be necessary for people to have to call the emergency services when their electricity supply fails.

nuclear power stations are exceptionally well protected against storm damage and security systems failure, according to the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland's final report for 2011 to the European Commission. The worst-affected areas are in the east and southeast of the country. Both Minister Häkämies and Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen (CD) have acknowledged the need for quicker and more efficient procedures for dealing with storm damage. Since there are still over 350,000 kilometres of overhead cabling throughout the country, Häkämies admits that the task of transferring them underground is a Herculean one, and has been estimated
to cost at least 10 billion euros. The two ministers admitted that the flow of information between the emergency services and the electricity companies leaves clear room for improvement.

THE DEBATE over aboveground electricity cables has become heated since the 26 December storms cut off power to thousands of homes in the south of the country. How much of this cost would be shouldered by the state, and how much by electricity supply companies is still unclear. Electricity suppliers estimate that it will take until the second week of January before supply is completely restored.
Poor service The storms that began on 26 December continue to make life difficult for thousands well over a week later. Minister for Employment and the Economy Jyri Häkämies (NCP) proposed a compromise solution in a press conference on 29 December. Tens of thousands of households remained without electricity for several days, and some areas were left without telephone network coverage also. Such a back-
up system is already in place at the nuclear plant in Loviisa, although there the possibility of additional protection against flooding is under consideration. According to the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland's director Jukka Laaksonen, decisions relating to nuclear safety will continue to be made at national level. The Authority nonetheless has demanded that safety systems be put in place at the nuclear reactors at Olkiluoto that would ensure safety in the event that the plant's security systems were left without electricity for 72 hours. In any case, the Minister for Employment and the Economy is intent on continuing with this project, which has already been underway for some time: most new electric lines are placed below ground
Around 1,400 adults between the ages of 18 and 74 responded to the institute's postal questionnaire on their viewing habits.
Purhonen is specifically interested in the socially isolating effects of TV watching and its possible social and political implications in present-day Finland. · In school health surveys carried out in 2010 and 2011, 15 per cent of teens between 13 and 15, 11 per cent of teens between 16 and 18, and 40 per cent of apprentices reported that they smoke daily. "Before the Irish laws came into effect 62 per cent of youth believed that over one-fifth of their age group smoked. After the new law came into effect, the percentage fell to 46 per cent," says Ollila, adding that the changes in youth attitudes do not develop immediately. However, surveys carried out during 2010 and 2011 indicate that 61 per cent of teenagers who smoke at least once a week get their cigarettes from an adult other than a parent or acquaintance. In addition, the threshold for minors who want to buy to-
bacco will be higher when they have to be asked for specially at the checkout.
Peer influence Researchers are fairly unanimous that whether or not youth begin to smoke depends decisively on the attitudes towards smoking in their peer group. Under the new laws, tobacco products must be stored in stores where they can't be seen by customers. "When children and youth can no longer see tobacco products on display alongside sweets in shops, they're less likely to consider smoking a normal part of adult life," Hara says. · From the 1970s onwards, almost every household in the country has had at least one television.
cioeconomic class, Purhonen says. Legislation similar to the new Finnish legislation has been in force in Ireland for two years, and youth attitudes there towards smoking have changed in that time. She estimates that in addition to adults, minors' main source of tobacco is friends who have
recently turned 18 and can buy the products legally. Regular broadcasts began two years later. A significant proportion of the studies are problem-centred and negative in tone, according to sociologist Semi Purhonen of the University of Helsinki. Despite the ban on sales and supply of tobacco products to minors, around a quarter of 16-18-year-olds light up every day, according to Ollila. 4

· Finns watch an average of almost three hours of television every day. Purhonen is less emphatic about the evils of television, although his studies too have found a connection between extended television watching and lack of interest in politics. Purhonen has studied the effects of TV-watching as part of a broader research project on consumer culture, which is a less-studied aspect of television watching. This has worrying political and social repercussions, argues Putnam. · A recent study of health-related habits show that the prevalence of smoking among teenagers has declined steadily in the period between 1977 and 2011. Purhonen's study is based on data collected by the national statistics institute Statistics Finland. "It's highly unlikely to cross their minds that supplying minors with tobacco products is against the law and carries legal consequences. Nor is he the first to notice this: American sociologist Robert Putnam has long argued that compulsive TV viewing is a major cause of widespread passivity and indifference in the United States. "It's very unlikely that one can talk of any really radical change in the short term. · TV came to Finland in the 1950s: the first national broadcast was sent from Helsinki in 1955. And in its wake have come reams of studies of the effects of watching television. Ollila believes that young people will be less likely to learn about the available brands of tobacco products than they are now. Those who watch most also tend to use other media less so if you're glued to the box for hours on end, chances are you spend less time reading the papers, listening to the radio, using the internet, and generally using less passive sources of information. Officials and health organisations have long considered the display of tobacco products in shops to be the last bastion of cigarette advertising in Finland. "This shows that a disappointingly large number of adults do not understand
their own responsibilities," says researcher Hanna Ollila of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). The most striking feature of television watching, says Purhonen, is precisely this: it's an exceptionally passive activity. The tobacco sales laws were tightened in 2010 to the exADULTS'
tent that selling even a single cigarette to an underage person is a crime. Customers must ask for the product, or will be given a list of the available tobacco products to choose from. Around 91 per cent of homes in Finland have a TV, and an average of two hours and 58 minutes are spent watching it every day. Politics is in any case exceptionally low on the list of priorities among the country's youth: according to a broad comparative study carried out in 2010, young people's knowledge of social and political issues in Finland is remarkably poor.. · A quarter of all youth between 16 and 18 smoke daily. · There are almost a million smokers in Finland in all.

Unemployed people are also more likely to consider themselves lonely than those in employment, thirdlevel students, or pensioners. In Espoo last Friday, a mallard duck was found to have laid nine eggs in its nest in Suomenoja. Survey respondents generally felt that not everyone in Finland has equal access to social and health services, with over half of all adults taking this view. President Tarja Halonen gave her last ever New Year's Speech, which was commonly referred to in papers at the beginning of the week as her "political testament", "societal testament" or merely "testament". Iltasanomat asked the presidential candidates. The growth was even steeper for the very richest, the 5,000 highestearning Finns: on average it was 34 per cent a year in 1990-2007. Timo Soini (PS) thinks murder is one such crime. Halonen covered a lot of ground in 11 minutes, highlighting issues surrounding the EU and the euro crisis, equality and marginalisation,. Firstly, in 1993 taxation on dividends was cut in Finland. 6

However, as with most of these sorts of speeches, it was as much what she didn't think warranted passing mention or elaboration as what she actually said that merited commentators' attention. And would the candidates dress in fur coats or hats as president. Any mention of cultural issues was noticeably absent. Pseudonyms will be accepted only in exceptional cases. Paavo Lipponen (SDP), Pekka Haavisto (Greens) and the Swedish People's Party's Eva Biaudet don't believe there exists such a crime where its perpetrator could never be

When Finland moved, first to a compensatory system of company tax and then in 1993 to a tax system that separated investment income and wages, over 60 per cent of the richest per cent's earnings took the form of investment income, which is taxed less, in comparative terms, than wages." the user himself. ILTASANOMAT 2 January. After all, who objects to, in the relative abstract, environmental protection, the idea that globalisation affects our lives, and combating marginalisation. It was close enough to the right figure, although the more accurate conversion rate would've been 5.94573 Finnmarks. Secondly, and less importantly, bonus systems started to fatten up
the wage packets of company directors during the 1990s. The Left Alliance's Paavo Arhinmäki didn't go into specifics but thought that in a country where the rule of law is observed there's always the chance of a criminal being shown mercy even though he or she wouldn't be in practice. The amount of money Finns ended up with after tax increased by 2.4 per cent a year. For example, the President's "The growth of inequality is not a force of nature" was a particularly nicely worded phrase, though not as satisfying as Keskisuomalainen's own "President Halonen's speech acted as a strong reminder that market forces are a good farmhand but a bad lord of the manor." According to Seinäjokibased Ilkka, the President's speech could be summarised in two sentences: "The economy causes problems, both inside and outside of Finland, and it's the job of politics to fix these." This summary isn't accurate, but it comes close. The group is split down the middle over the issue. According to studies carried out by Professor Matti Tuomala of the University of Tampere's economics department, less than 15 per cent of the richest per cent's earnings came from investment income before 1990. As Jyväskylä's Keskisuomalainen noted, the themes of Halonen's speech weren't original, but that's not to say it didn't have its moments. In itself, the speech was pretty bland and superficial, even if Helsingin Sanomat claimed that Halonen "emphasised [her values] more forcefully than in previous New Year's Speeches." Oulu's Kaleva described the speech as "typical Halonen," and there definitely wasn't anything unexpected in there. The increase amongst
the highest-earning per cent was 12.3. The paper also described Halonen saying practically nothing about Russia, despite events there over the past month, as her "demonstrating some wisdom." That's one way of putting it, certainly.

"Aizuwakamastu can no longer depend on injections of public funds from the central government because Tokyo cannot afford to do this," she explained. Ideas being floated include turning Aizu University, the lone higher education institution in the city into a venture business centre and giving students venture capital.
Smaller incubating projects that receive support are businesses owned by women or those that promote local brands. "I checked on my home. Street lighting in some districts has been repaired. Tokyo Electric Power Co. Returnees to the city have also complained that underpaid government soldiers have been a threat. "That is crumbling now. "Lack of a clean water supply is another big problem for us since we returned here a month ago. However, their home was completely gutted during the three-year conflict for control of the city. Unexploded bombs, planted by Al- Shabaab to prevent Somali government forces and AU peacekeepers from taking control of these areas, remain scattered throughout the areas vacated by the Islamist rebels. Guled says the family does not know how they will pay for the repairs. We wanted to protect our children from radiation, but now we are at the mercy of the government," says 47-year-old Sato. The areas are secure, but almost every home in our neighbourhood has been hit by shells and bullet scars remain everywhere," Hallane explained.. We had to flee with our lives," said Guled as she swept the yard of her ruined home. In turn, this has increased unemployment. "The stirrings in Aizuwakamatsu indicate a growing desire in localities to do things their own way," said Obayashi. This is additional to the 11.5 billion dollars already granted to TEPCO. In such a scenario fuel costs would soar, costing the manufacturing industry 38 per cent higher in electricity fees" said Toichi. Despite security incidents in the city, a semblance of normality has returned here. Against this depressing backdrop, the Japanese government approved a 1.16 trillion-dollar draft budget last week for the fiscal year. But Hallane's home was hit by mortar shells and is in need of major repairs before he can move back. Mohamed Hallane says his family wants to live in their home again. The family has now returned to their neighbourhood in Hodan district where they used to live in the midst of a close-knit community. Sato's plight is shared by tens of thousands of people from the tsunami-battered coastline of Tohoku that was home to factories producing automobile components and semiconductors for export.
Goshi Hosono (right), the Japanese minister in charge of nuclear power affairs, explains that decommissioning the tsunami-wrecked reactors at Fukushima could take as long as 40 years, with melted nuclear fuel possibly stuck where it is for a quarter of a century.

New year brings economic aftershocks

Japan, the world's third-largest economy after the United States and China, is now facing difficult economic decisions as the country searches for its way to recovery.
The World Bank estimated the economic cost of Tohoku to be 235 billion dollars, making it the most expensive natural disaster in history. The state utility company was destroyed during the country's two-decade civil war. "We were forced to move from our house in Okuma-machi barely eight kilometres from the damaged nuclear plant. the Somali capital now under the control of government forces backed by African Union (AU) troops, most of the city's residents have returned to their ruined homes after the surprise withdrawal of the extremists in August. "Things began to fall apart when our neighbourhood became the target of bombing and shooting in 2008. It is situated in Hawlwadag district in the south of Mogadishu, an area that was once an Al-Shabaab stronghold. The Tohoku disaster, the high Yen, and the global economic crisis spell a bleak forecast for the New Year," Kenji Obayashi, an economist at Waseda University, explains. So small, local and privately run companies provide services for those who can afford them. Developments in Aizuwakamastu, now home to 6,000 nuclear evacuees from Fukushima vicinities, have become a focal point for ongoing discussions on postdisaster recovery.
Domestic economic recovery This city of 150,000 people known for its pristine mountain landscape and hot springs was already struggling with domestic economic recovery when the Tohoku disaster struck, badly affecting tourism and agriculture.
Kumi Inamura, a member of the Aizuwakamastu town management organisation, explains that the city is taking tentative steps to boost the local economy through local solutions. We are moving to more diversity and change," he said.

Government officials have warned returning residents of the presence of the explosives, which have so far claimed the lives of a number of people and injured dozens more. company has restored electricity in many homes and we expect to get it in our home soon," said Kulmiye. Hospitals in Islamist-vacated areas have been destroyed and remain closed.
Dahir Kulmiye and his family of five returned to their partially destroyed home in Hodon soon after the rebels fled the city in August. To make up for the shortfall in electricity supply the government will step up generation from existing thermal plants. "The nuclear disaster has added to Japan's financial woes. Provided that at least some of the many models coming on the market prove to perform well in Finnish conditions, the prospects for electric cars becoming popular are good. They used to move in lockstep, but starting in April Finnish yields rose, indicating investor unease, while Swedish yields fell. Finland's real effective exchange rate has drifted away from Germany's, making Finnish goods and services less attractive internationally. But just like Nouriel Roubini, Hugh's successful forecasting has caused the financial powers of the world to take note. "Our online ticket service is still at the coding stage we want it in perfect working order from the very outset, rather than have the sort of problems VR had." According to Möttö, the low-price business model works well for bus companies in countries that allow competition. The company plans to develop a network of low-cost routes throughout the country as soon as restrictions on competition are eased. The transition period on the Kitee-Joensuu route expires in the summer. The test programme has just been launched in the capital region, as part of a broader electrical vehicle and machinery development programme

The first route opened between Pori and Tampere in the beginning of January and there will be at least one service a day, with stops at the express bus stops. Steady rise in number of shopping centres
The construction of new shopping centres in Finland continues at a steady rate, STT reported on Monday. Most of his analysis is released via blog posts instead of peer-reviewed journals. The real competitors are private motoring and fuel prices. The company's main target is not other public transport companies, however. That's not allowed by the European Union, and so Finnish mass transporta-

Similarly modest upswings in index rates throughout European exchanges this morning. The company is also bracing itself for stiff competition. In a much-discussed new prediction, Hugh suggests that Finland is falling out of the strong "core" of Europe and into the troubled "periphery." The British-born Hugh is an eclectic economist, actually earning his living teaching English in Barcelona. He explains that construction output greatly increased while industrial output failed to recover after the recession. An average of four new centres a year are opened in the country, according to the Finnish Council of Shopping Centers. "Finnish house prices have effectively been rising in real terms since the slump of the early 1990s." He thinks the real estate market could be at a turning point. "Express travel in Finland continues to be based on route permits, which in practice is the same thing as a monopoly. HT
Trade deficit Hugh begins his current analysis by pointing to signs of problems in Finland. "We haven't planned too far ahead yet. A favourite indication of trouble for economists around the world is the sudden decoupling of Finnish and Swedish 10-year bond yields. One major reason for this is that far less tax is levied on the use of electric vehicles than on vehicles that are powereed by combustion engines. unless you take seriously my ageing population and export dependency hypothesis, in which case the recent loss of competitiveness is about to pose serious problems. Our company is based in Kitee, so it's likely that we'll apply for a permit to operate from there too, even though it may not be the world's most commercially attractive route," Möttö laughs. The last transition times expire only in 2019, and the first route to open to competition is the Tampere-Pori route

activities have always played a central part in Finnish culture and leisure time; so much so that there is even a specific verb to describe outdoor activity, which is ulkoilla. Nature is present all around, and I particularly enjoy going to the two little islands, Sisähattu and Ulko-hattu, which are only a short walk away. The section of Turuntie falling within the downtown area became part of Henry Street in 1942, and the name was changed to Mannerheimintie in honour of Marshal C.G.E. The current edition of the dictionary was released in 2008. I also recommend the Emmaus flea-
market, whose staff is very helpful and where they always have a great collection of items. They are also building smaller houses on the beaches. I live in Lauttasaari, in a 40-year-old block of flats. I would love it if there were more foreigners of all kinds. Please recommend one shop or service in your neighbourhood that you would like to promote. Only a short distance away, there is a lovely cottage area with small paths, and when walking there you forget completely that you're inside an actual city! What do you like about your neighbourhood. Lauttasaari is quite a peculiar place. The typical adult Finn has on average 13 different outdoor hobbies or activities, which is two more than 10

However, outdoor activities do not necessarily require being physically demanding, so even activities such as sitting by the fire in the forest to grill a sausage are included. karppaus: Low-carbohydrate or low-carb dieting. In the 19th century it became Läntinen Viertotie (Western Road), and in the 1920s the name reverted to Turuntie. In it first incarnation it was known as Töölöntie, later becoming Espoon maantie (Espoo road), and later still Turun maantie (Turku road). The word "karppaus" was ubiquitous in 2011. The additions to the forthcoming edition include: jytky: the word means a thud, a bang, or a slam, but in April of last year the leader of the Finns Party, Timo Soini, used the word to sum up the party's landslide win in the parliamentary elections. A significant change has taken place in the outdooractivity rate of Finns aged between 65 and 74 years.
More than 90 per cent have regular outdoor activities, the amount of which has also risen compared with the same age group a decade ago. Many other words that emerged recently did not make it into the latest edition of the dictionary; these include soinismi (a reference to Finns Party leader Timo Soini's trademark lowbrow quips), sixpack-hallitus (a reference to the current sixparty coalition government), and arabikevät (Arab Spring).

I studied architecture in London and my family is in the restaurant business. How would you describe the concept of the restaurant. In short, it tastes like the African cousin of Indian butter chicken, with a hint of ko-

Having been cooked with a hefty bunch of onions and spices, it went perfectly with a bowl of plain jasmine rice. It's just us. They knew they had a hit product in their hands, and it was time to release it for all. I was curious to find out what all the fuss was about. We have no ethnic identity. I must say that it was not my favourite, but this may be just me, as according to the owners, Piripiri has been a constant hit since opening. I think the main thing is that the food is tasty, and presented in a kind of fancy, artistic way, but that we're not operating a fine dining type of restaurant. I would say that even though I've spent a lot of time in California, I basically got the menu concept idea from New York. Richard: There are a lot of interesting things.
