So in this case also, lack of trust pulls the rug out from under a great idea even before it's even tried.
THE TRAGEDY of this lack of trust is that the world is full of the sort of severe problems that can only be effectively addressed by a very widespread international sharing of the burden involved. At the Durban climate summit, the economically developing countries generally agreed that steps must urgently be taken to deal with the growing threat. My hope for my own native country is that it could be the kind of place that could give the same opportunity to a great many others also. The United Nations climate change summit in Durban last year produced nothing more impressive than a agreement that, come 2015, something will be done that will be put into effect in 2020.

amount of ODA Finland gives. The latest study by the organisation I lead, the Finnish Service Centre for Development Cooperation (Kepa), turned up interesting results on Finnish attitudes to the wider world. 59 per cent of respondents had a neutral view, and those who were against or "couldn't be less interested" accounted for about ten per cent.

THE HARDENING of attitudes is not of course a solely Finnish trend; it is now prominent throughout the European Union, with loud calls for tighter immigration policies in many other countries as well. It's something we can afford to do, and I believe that Finland would benefit greatly from doing it that the increased cultural diversity and sharing of ideas would over time be transformed into a powerful source of growth and innovation. Market speculation, even on the price of essential food commodities, has caused the worst suffering in the very poorest countries, which lack the economic stabilisation mechanisms needed to protect their populations from the brunt of damage caused by wildly fluctuating currency values. Two things in particular stood out on my return. The opinions expressed in this section are the writers' own and do not represent the official policy of the Helsinki Times.

Helsinki Times reserves the right to accept or reject submissions, as well as to edit or shorten the text. In the Forum shopping centre in central Helsinki, I noticed that two African hairdressers, one of whom was Sudanese and the other possibly Arabic, were having a conversation in fluent Finnish. Both of these simple, everyday things were almost unheard of in this country when I left it in 1990. All in all, a widespread lack of faith in globalisation is in the air. At the same time, a tax of this modest size would generate around 250 billion euros in revenue in the European Union alone: a sum which, incidentally, is the same as what
many experts in global development say is needed to not only meet the eight Millennium Development Goals for tackling severe poverty by 2015, but also for dealing effectively with climate change. According to the survey, slightly less than one-third (31 per cent) of Finns have a positive attitude to development cooperation and immigration. Critics are fond of repeating that such a tax could only work if it were implemented everywhere in the world at the same time. That is something we would all gain from.. Otherwise, we're told, the only effect would be to make the countries that are first to adopt it even less competitive globally than they were before. weeks after that, on Kallio's Helsinginkatu, I passed a young African man in military uniform, obviously on leave from his Finnish military service. Proponents say that even a tax of 0.5 per cent would rein in much of the most damaging speculation. ONE MAJOR reason for the ongoing global financial crisis is said to be the dearth of global financial market regulations that have any bite. It has become a bit of a cliché to note that in tough economic times, the notional division of people into "us" and "them" becomes more marked, and more hostile. Investors have withdrawn in droves from regions and countries that the powerful global credit rating agencies have designated as economically risky areas. Demographic surveys on the world's poorest countries shows that as much as 60-70 per cent of the populations in these countries are below the age of 25. It took me a while to learn that one can, and should, begin a discussion in Finnish irrespective of the presumed ethnic origin of the other person.

of trust can also be seen in international negotiations, including those between organisations dealing with development cooperation assistance and other pressing global issues. Finland has changed greatly in a short time, from a quite homogenous country to a colourful and exciting one. You can submit your articles to viewpoint@helsinkitimes.fi. Many countries, including Finland, have expressed some interest in this kind of global tax, but there seems to be very little conviction that the plan will ever amount to anything. At the same time, there was also broad-based agreement that countries of different sizes and in different economic circumstances have differing levels of responsibility concerning the actions that need to be taken to stem climate change. Economically prosperous countries like Finland still bear the heaviest moral responsibility for dealing with severe global poverty and climate change.
A GREATER
level of international trust, if it is to be achieved, will come about through action, in the process of making the effort necessary to deal with problems like the massively unequal global distribution of wealth and other violations of basic human rights. It is often asked whether local and national border controls need to be tightened, or whether some greater openness and cooperation is the better solution. According to director of communications, chief constable Jussi Pohjonen of the National Traffic Police, temporary speed warning systems should not be relied on too much. "The rear foglights should always be used when there's billowing snow and bad con-

gusts raised such a cloud of snow in Kuopio's Kallansillat that visibility was instantly reduced to almost zero. For example, director of training Antero Lammi of the national traffic safety authority Liikenneturva says that more use should be made of the technology that is already available in vehicles, such as warning systems when the driver gets too close to the vehicle ahead. It would be common sense to pull over occasionally and clean them off," Pohjonen advises. Daytime running lights and indicators also seem to be too much for many motorists, Pohjonen says. Online camera footage of a spate of traffic accidents in the capital region about a month ago shows that many drivers are a hazard to themselves and others, he says. Unfortunately many drivers

think that it's always safe to drive up to the limit: if the sign says a maximum of 100 km/h, then they drive at the full 100, regardless of weather conditions. Pohjonen would like to see more measures aimed at
getting people to drive more thoughtfully. Other vehicles can come along quickly, greatly increasingly the likelihood of an accident."
Technical fixes Safety Investigation Authority researchers are not the only ones who are pondering the best ways to go about improving motoring safety. "If an obstacle crops up in front of them, they're help-
less. Snow collects on the lamps and blocks them out completely. Drivers should also be warned of approaching danger spots in their vicinity, he adds. Increasing the amount and variety of information on local weather and road conditions would also have a beneficial effect on motorists' own behaviour behind the wheel, Valonen suggests. Such places could al-
so be marked, for example with wind buffers or weather-sensitive warning lights. The electronic systems are already in place on about 450 of roadway throughout the country; according to Risto Kulmala of the Finnish Transport Agency, they should be used far more widely. The information drivers most need is very local in nature; they want to know what's ahead of them weatherwise, not what's happening throughout the country," says the Authority's head researcher Kai Valonen. It was in these condition that a 63-car pileup occurred in the area last March. "Driving technology is a good opportunity, because it
works logically and consistently when it's in good condition," Lammi says. At the very least, he says, rear fog lamps should be used when the driver has even slight difficulty in keeping track of the vehicle ahead. "Drivers don't necessarily know how to act in these situations, or act unpredictably. Energy-saving light-emitting diode (led) lights are a
problem in the cold weather, since they don't generate any heat to melt away ice build-up on the lamps. "The information would be conveyed either to mobile devices, or to a device installed in the vehicle. "The financial investment would pay itself back in increased safety," he says. According to a recent study by the Finnish Transport Agency, temporary speed warning systems slow motorists down by between two and five kilometres per hour, in addition to the reduction in speed in response to already bad driving conditions. If a driver doesn't know what kind of lights are on his or her vehicle, they should take the trouble to find out as soon as possible, he adds.

Hearsay Professor of Labour Law KariPekka Tiitinen of the University of Helsinki told news agency STT on Monday that the dismissal violates the Employment Contracts Act. SAK president Lauri Lyly said in his statement last Saturday that the organisation condemns bullying of which Räty is accused, and for which he is currently being investigated by police in all sectors. "My message to decisionmakers and other influential figures is this: trust can be won only through showing example. All must be fairly treated in the workplace," the statement said. In Finland bars and restaurants are allowed to serve alcoholic beverages until 1:30 am and some nightclubs until 3:30 am. The provision of evidence on either side would be an extremely difficult matter, he believes, because AKT workers "would be caught between a rock and a hard place" as witnesses. Apart from the vagueness of the charge, much of the Union's justification for the dismissal seems to be based on hearsay, says Tiitinen. The President communicated his respect "for those kinds of Finns who do their duty and don't put themselves in the limelight," and spared a few kind words too for those who "go their own way and do their own thing. The police investigation into the charges of abuse of office and improper treatment of staff is due to be completed within the next few weeks. The first-term MP explained that he doesn't need to pay for sex but gave the girl 100 euros out of "pity." No stranger to controversy, Hakkarainen has previously said, "If two gays have a child, the child would become a double gay," that "the streets of Helsinki are full of niggers doing nothing," and has also compared immigrants to thieves. The Social Democratic Party and the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) have strongly denounced the firing, which several law professors have said may be illegal. Ruonala told STT on Monday that under the terms of the dismissal, Ahde will be given severance pay and is under no obligation to continue work for the duration of the contract. Police are still investigating the charges brought by Ahde. I want to be involved in a systematic way in promoting the success abroad of Finnish know-how and work," he said, and emphasised the need for politicians and other key decision-makers in Finland to get the measure of the international competition so as to be better able to manoeuvre in a fast-changing world. Widespread condemnation of Transport Workers' Union actions

that she is considering taking separate legal action against the Union for the dismissal.
THE DECISION on 2 March by
the board of Transport Workers' Union AKT to fire its head of communications, Hilkka Ahde, for speaking out against abusive behaviour by AKT chairman Timo Räty has unleashed a wave of condemnation. This action is out of line with the way the trade union movement works," Lyly said. It emerged on Monday that Ruonala himself is now being investigated by police for alleged assault of another female AKT employee a couple of weeks ago. And especial resolve is demanded of those who can exert an influence on the privileges enjoyed by themselves and within
their own circles," he said, in a clear reference to the recent revelations of cronyism and opportunism among the business elite, including Finnair chief executive Mika Vehviläinen. "A boss besotted with power against a subordinate, the credibility of the man against the woman's word. "I cannot accept that one party takes ac-
tion to fire the other in the middle of a dispute settlement process. Ruonala has vigorously defended the dismissal, saying in a statement issued by Räty's secretary that the dismissal was not based on any single or isolated incident. The deal for selling arms to the US has been in preparation for a long time, however.
President Sauli Niinistö begins his second week in office today, 8 March.

Where to begin. For example, the vice chair of AKT, Veijo Ruonala (SDP), suggested to the media last weekend that Ahde had been overheard making negative comments about Räty in a taxi queue around two years ago. "The question is not just of one employee being bullied, but Räty's personality traits that make him unfit for a managerial position," the
former employees wrote in the statement. Niinistö emphasised the need for "a sense of justice" in balancing the country's budget. If the case goes to court things will be tough for all parties involved, Tiitinen says. In Tiitinen's view, the dismissal is quite clearly a form of retaliation against Ahde's bringing charges against Räty to the occupational safety and health authorities. "We expect the AKT's management to begin taking genuine action to restore the Union's credibility as one to which its members can be proud to belong," the statement continued. Niinistö got off to a running start by pledging in his inaugural speech to develop Finland's trade relations with China and other emerging
economies. Niinistö said he also wants to contribute to tackling alienation among young people; he will make good on his election promise by establishing a working group to investigate the matter, he said. The statement issued on 3 March and signed by the chair of the SDP's women's organisation, Tuula Peltonen, describes Ahde's dismissal as outrageous. In the law professor's view, the Union seems willing to negotiate on the issue of redundancy payments also. Nor is there any connection with the allegations of workplace bullying," Ruonala wrote. Commenting on the statement issued on Sunday, Tiitinen says it is "baited" with a negotiation offer to Ahde. Among the signatories is former AKT chair Kauko Lehikoinen, who has since retired from the trade union. According to the signatories, Ahde's dismissal is in violation of the trade union movement's principles and practices. "We need boldness for economic growth. "Ahde has announced that she will take us to court, so no doubt that's what it will lead to," Ruonala told STT.
Over 40 members of AKT's staff staged a walkout on Monday morning to protest the sacking of Hilkka Ahde.

in numerous editorials on the subject on Sunday and Monday. Between 2010-11 the president pardoned seven men who had either refused to do military service or civilian service. The union's attempt at justifying its position in a press release sent out on Sunday made the AKT look even more pathetic, as it essentially came down to this: Ahde has given us a bad name, and that's not what our head of communications is supposed to do. Unsurprisingly, the decision has caused a mixture of shock, anger and ridicule around the country, reflected

with a chairperson who has been accused by a staff member of bullying would probably try their upmost to keep a low profile while an investigation into the matter was ongoing. In a similar vein, Ilta-Sanomat asked if, after this incident, the labour movement could credibly take on employers accused of bullying or if AKT would be able to challenge groundless dismissals of its members. According to Forest.fi, the earnings per hectare from privately owned forests were 96 euros last year. On Friday, AKT's board voted 11-9 to sack the staff member in question, head of communications Hilkka Ahde. Supposedly the best way to do that is by firing an employee who's made an accusation against the very same chairman, thereby pushing him even further into the spotlight! Most editorial pieces on this news story touched on the hypocrisy of a union treating its own employee so disrespectfully, probably illegally. However, it cannot grow if the number of workers decreases.' According to Vartiainen, changes are necessary to secure the funding of social services. As Turun Sanomat put it, AKT's decision "sends out the message that the organisation doesn't respect the rights of employees or care about labour-market rules of the game." So let me take this opportunity to thank those 11 members of the AKT board. On average, she pardoned about 20 people every year. To reach this level of income, a forest owner should
have 270 hectares of forest. In total, Finns own 347,000 tree farms with at least two hectares."

Although the forestry industry is huge in Finland, over 60 per cent of tree farms are smaller than 20 hectares. Not Transport Workers' Union AKT, though, those farsighted mavericks! But let's be fair if anyone knows how to act when the unfair treatment of an employee comes to light, they do. In all those cases, the Supreme Court had rejected their appeals. For instance, Kuopio's Savon Sanomat described the decision as "unbelievable" while Iltalehti provocatively, and exaggeratedly, suggested that, "AKT's style brings to mind the mafia or a motorcycle gang." More sensibly, the paper highlighted the fact that there's only one woman on AKT's 20-member board. For example, Helsingin Sanomat stated that, "The defender of workers turned into the enemy of workers." In common with other editorials, the paper also noted that AKT's behaviour has harmed not only this union's credibility but also the credibility of all trade unions. `About five years ago, Eero and Juha sketched out the basic idea of the camera technology used in the Pureview phone on a napkin, so really it's them who are behind the idea. Some of the men had already served some of their sentence, others hadn't. If the rise in the cost of living is taken into account, the earnings per hectare went up by five euros in 2011. There are more than 737,000 people in Finland who own at least two hectares of forest. On average, Finns earned about 25,649 euros in 2010. The Finnish Forest Association reports that an aver-
age-sized tree farm in Finland comprises 30.1 hectares of productive forestland. The pardons are in line with those given by Halonen during earlier years. For the last six years he has worked for Konjunkturinstituten, a research institute within the Swedish Ministry of Finance. There are more than 737,000 people in Finland who own farms of at least two hectares.. A team of hundreds of people has been working on
this, but these two provided the inspiration,' Harlow explains. Comically, the press release also stated that the board felt that action had to be taken to ensure that AKT's chairman, Timo Räty, could get on with his job in peace. In particular, Vartiainen praises the changes made by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Minister for Finance Anders Borg that have been aimed at providing more jobs.
`In Finland, many people believe that for the economy to continue growing it's sufficient to simply invest and give stimulus to recovery. Decisions not in line with the opinion of the Supreme Court became more common during the last two years as Halonen pardoned about ten people a year without the agreement of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court disagreed with the parole of, for example, people sentenced for manslaughter and grave robbery."

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act is a US law concerned with bribery of foreign officials. "We have done so in a straightforward manner and we are committed to meeting the highest standards of professional conduct." Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, made a statement to Reuters saying, "Here we have a private intelligence firm, relying on informants from the US government, foreign intelligence agencies with questionable reputations and journalists. For its part Stratfor claim, "Stratfor has worked to build good sources in many countries around the world, as any publisher of global geopolitical analysis would do," the company said in a statement. Anti-secrecy group Wikileaks last week started to release some five million emails from USbased global intelligence company Stratfor. Anonymous was coincidently in the news the day after the leaks, as 25 suspected members of the hacking collective were arrested by Argentinean, Chilean, Colombian and Spanish law enforcement officers, as part of Interpol's Operation Unmasked the name of which is seen by many as a reference to the public face of Anonymous being the iconic mask of the vigilante, freedom-fighter anti-hero of the dystopian thriller V for Vendetta.

has been seen as a huge embarrassment for Stratfor, not to mention the individuals, companies and governments which subscribe to its services, Anonymous hackivists cracked the computer system of the `security specialists' where passwords apparently often consisted of only the company name and obtained sensitive information relating to informers, how they were discreetly paid and the psychological methods used to `handle' spies. Coca-Cola also defended availing of Stratfor's service, releasing a statement saying, "We consider it prudent to monitor for protest activities at any major event we sponsor, as such activities may affect our partners, customers, consumers or employees." In what might be viewed as an admission of the legal questionability of Stratfor's payment methods, CEO George Friedman confidentially told his employees in August 2011: "We are retaining a law firm to create a policy for Stratfor on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. against the Colombian Ministry of Defence and presidential websites, as well as Chile's Endesa electricity company and its National Library, among others... Dow said in a written statement that "major companies are often required to take appropriate action to protect their people and safeguard their facilities," adding that it operated within the law. Control means financial, sexual or psychological control to the point where he would reveal his sourcing and be tasked. This also becomes a matter of how and when to out [the information]." In what might be seen as a damage limitation statement last week Friedman also stated, "God knows what a hundred employees writing endless emails might say that is embarrassing, stupid or subject to misinterpretation. Our Finance Minister suggested raising the tax rate on those earning over 100,000 annually. We can't increase our public revenue to pay for these social expenditures. Also, if the real source of the problem in troubled countries is balance of payments, then we have that problem, too. Then we mainly used the K-Plussa card. Similar to the S-Group programme, the K-Plussa can be used across all the diverse companies under the Kesko umbrella: K-market food stores, Musta Pörssi electronics retailers, or Intersports sports shops, for example, as well as other independents which joined the programme. At other times, the value of cumulative purchases is tracked and the customer receives a bonus either as cash or points to be used for future purchases at set times. "On the contrary, the information on the aggregate level about shopping habits might help in planning the assortment of the shops.". So the key is the location of the shop rather than the bonus related to the card. The benefits of the cards to retailers are obvious: they tend to make customers more loyal, give excellent information regarding shopping habits, and are useful for directed marketing. One thing to remember is that most traditional credit card companies also have bonus systems. Computer scientist Petteri Järvinen recently mocked the uproar about Google tracking its users, because he suggests that bonus cards already do the same thing. The tax increase on alcoholic beverages that came into force in Finland on 1 January of this year is also expected to have a marked effect. He found that "through playful learning the children have taught themselves most of the letters and have also learned to write and read before the formal teaching starts in grade two." For those of us who completed our education, in the 1990s the use of computers is second nature. Professor Heilä-Ylikallio explains that over the five years the study has been ongoing this has not been a problem.
Åbo Akademi University was founded in 1918 as Finland's second university through private donations primarily to secure higher education in Swedish for the country's Swedish-speaking population and to allow Turku to again become a university town. Åbo Akademi is also the only unilingually Swedish university in the world outside of Sweden. The creative writing now really blossoms where the writing involves pictures and layout." One fear relating to the teaching of children to read and write through computers is that the traditional and irreplaceable skill of handwriting maybe be neglected. The practice of both manual dexterity and visual memory is positive and we do encourage it obviously. In an increasingly digital world there can be a meeting of these two traditions one which reaps great benefits for today's students.

The rights and social status of women have been recurring themes of exploration in many plays, art, TV programmes and music the world over throughout the changing landscape of its history, thus making them catalytic media for contextualising and questioning the gender backdrop that women have been forced to live within. Originally the street only spanned the distance between Iso Roobertinkatu to Eerikinkatu, but was later extended from both ends. A potted history of Helsinki's major streets
Street View
Fredrikinkatu
Fredrikinkatu, or Freda as it's popularly called, begins in the Punavuori district and runs to the Temppeliaukio underground church in Lutherinkatu in Etu-Töölö. Demonstrating such ideas is Helsinki writing talent Zoë Chandler, who holds up a mirror to the modern day status of women, and their dominance in relationships
with men, in her new comedy Single Bride. The origin of the name is not entirely clear, but is most likely named after Fredrik Stjernvall (1767-1815), one of the most fervent proponents of Helsinki's superseding Turku as the country's capital city. The ultimate goal of every human being is pursuing happiness, and finding our ideal of home and good life. Larsson also produced self-portraits at different stages of his life and beautiful family scenes in nature. After almost a century, Larsson's idyllic picture of family life in Sweden around the end of the 19th century portrays family, home, the artist's friends, and nature, all
of whom were the subjects that he depicted with the greatest warmth. Happy International Women's Day, ladies!
International Woman's Day is celebrated on 8 March. As RAWR's YC Felin explains, "These are high-fashion designers with their own collections, so it's great that they have taken time out to help with this great cause. However, on whatever scale people choose to celebrate the occasion, it is a day to reflect upon women's collective achievements within society and recognise the evolution of their social standing. But what does this mean and how it can be accomplished. They run weekend camps for children and young families and aim to prevent social problems and exclusion. Selected quotes from Larsson's writings provide a unique insight into the painter's thinking. Most of Larsson's works, both large and small, are watercolours, his preferred medium of expression, through which he introduced a new kind of lightness and airiness into the Swedish art world. From the battle for universal suffrage that saw the introduction of women's right to vote, to the war efforts at home when the world was in disarray, right through to today, where effective gender equality is second nature and discrimination against women is almost eradicated. The most plausible explanation for this might be that some numbers were left unused to allow for further extension of the street at the Punavuori end, which never came about.

Kotka itself could not exactly be described as a tourist town indeed, most of its passing trade is made up of Russian truck drivers and those involved in the shipping industry but if you scratch beneath the surface, there are a number of unique and rewarding treasures to be found.
Intertwined with the sea Located approximately 130 kilometres from the capital along the coast towards the Russian border, the city

Travel with a light footprint
· Think when and where you want to travel from an environmental angle. Kotka may not be on everyone's to-do list but if you do make the effort to get there, the friendly people, picturesque city centre and sea-based attractions will ensure your visit is a memorable one.
Haukkavuori lookout tower stands on the highest point in Kotka. · Pack light. For the more adventurous, there are many islands in the archipelago that are worth exploring. Use the air conditioning only when you are in your room. Anu-Eveliina Mattila, communications manager at Finnmatkat, says that children often ask their parents about environmental matters. Travel to a tourist destination in order to avoid environmental impacts on untouched nature. The islands in front of the city 5. If you fly to Asia via London instead of directly, the emissions will be doubled. For those who have not had enough of the sea and its history by the time they leave, the nearby Maretari-

Varissaari Island was attacked by France during the Crimean War.. Back on land and a little out of town is the rustic Langinkoski Imperial Fishing Lodge, which was built in 1889 for Alexander III, Emperor of Russia. "Their concern is obvious. A little further out to sea is the island of Haapasaari, which is steeped in history and has a church that is over 150 years old. This architecturally splendid attraction plays host to the Maritime Museum of Finland and the Museum of Kymenlaakso, as well as a number of constantly changing exhibitions. Perhaps the most striking building along the coastline is the vast and unusually-shaped Vellamo Maritime Centre. So far, environmental responsibility has not been much of an issue for holidaymakers, but when businesses make travel decision they do usually
pay attention to environmental matters. This old bay has been lovingly transformed into an oasis of waterfalls, ponds and brooks, and visitors can spend hours meandering around the beautifully manicured lawns and gardens. Also, according to the Kaleva Travel travel agency, very few private travellers choose to compensate their CO2 emissions, whereas it is quite common for businesses to do so. "It may seem a small matter but it helps us save 3000 kg of detergent every year," Inger Mattsson says.

Although it only appeared on shelves on 30 November last year, the album quickly became Finland's number one-selling release last year, headed by the single Storytime. After publicly jettisoning operatic vocalist Tarja Turunen a handful of years ago, and replacing her with the rockier tendencies of Swede Anette Olzon, the band has gone on to enjoy even greater levels of global success. Well, not quite: our leading men are also CIA agents and friends. their Finnish tour in Joensuu. And for those who can't get enough Nightwish, then no doubt their forthcoming movie, which forms a companion piece to their new album, should satiate fans before they return for a spate of festival gigs later in the summer. The former choirboy's first release, the laptop-tinkering indie pop of EP Curtis Lane, arrived to critical acclaim in 2010, followed up by last year's debut full-length You Are All I See. Soon it is revealed that not everything is on the appropriate side of the law in this Swedish-produced thriller. Subsequent solo releases were distinguished by various walls of sound where her vocals would often intertwine with, and be subdued by, seas of drones, reverb and distortion, creating blissful and eerie soundscapes. However, sceptics can re-sheathe their knives as advance word has it being quite a spectacular experience. First appearing with the self-released full-length CDR Grouper in 2005, the solo artist enjoyed a rise in prominence in 2006, when Creep-
tic and electric guitars, along with sporadic keyboard, offered further clarity to her unique expression. With a 250-million dollar budget and an unknown in the lead, studio heads must be tense about its forthcoming box office performance. That's about it. Blessed with a unique, cinematic sound encompassing different influences, Active Child has toured with a number of notable acts across a range of genres, including dubstep producer James Blake and the dreamy synthpop of School of Seven Bells, as well as indie-rockers White Lies and White Rabbits. His unique vocal stylings draw comparisons with such
acts as Bon Iver, James Blake and even Morten Harket of `80s Norwegian trio a-ha, and his ethereal falsetto is backed by cinematic synthesizers whose sonic quality often resembles that of a harp. Support on Monday night comes from local act Barry Andrewsin disko.

HAILING form Portland, Oregon, Liz Harris, aka Grouper, offers a backdrop of textured ambient landscapes onstage at Kuudes Linja on Wednesday 14 March. Following on from the release of double album AIA last year, Grouper arrives in Finland for the first time in her career, for a brief visit that includes stops in Tampere and Turku. As for Witherspoon, she manages to emerge with her reputation relatively unscathed in a thankless role. Cue guitars wailing at a volume that would make Slash smirk in appreciation, explosions of a size that would make Michael Bay feel inadequate, and a plot that sails by at a cracking pace, without leaving any meaningful residue, leaving you wondering, "Exactly just what happened to the last 1.5 hours of my life?" In fairness, the film is actually not bad, the genuine chemistry shared by the two male leads smoothing over some of the more clunky scenes. Shifting her gaze towards slightly more accessible output, 2008's Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill enabled her to open the gates to such previously unthought-of concepts such as melody, structure and the occasional phrase. Soon finding himself a prisoner of these less than hospitable creatures, he manages to escape, only to cross paths with a princess in desperate need of a saviour. The
first album from their new line-up, 2007's Dark Passion Play, saw the band enjoying the highest sales of their career, accompanied by a twoyear worldwide tour. Elsewhere, Nobels Testamente sees a murder occurring at the Nobel Banquet. 14

That's the feeling we are trying to create. For example, the korvasieni [a variety of mushroom] in Finland is only available for a few weeks a year and we can only have it on the menu for one month." Meritullinkatu 25, 00170 Helsinki. Puh. Having heard the fanfare surrounding this small, incredibly popular bistro on Fredrikinkatu, I had half expected to come across a crowd swamping the entrance and trailing around the corner, waiting impatiently for the chance to be allowed inside. That seems to be the order of the day. "Service is one of the most important things. It is not fine dining, but we are almost using the same ingredients." Was it a surprise to win such a prestigious award. The kitchen is very small and we don't have the resources to make a lunch service and two services in the evening. There is also a popular daily menu of four courses, priced at 49 euros, once again offering a variety of fresh selections during the week. "I think we have changed the style of eating out in Finland a little bit," Linnanmäki offers. The space here is relaxed and comfortable. These we have to order at least one week in advance."
Timo Linnamäki, one of Muru's four co-owners. "We have to plan a lot," Linanmäki continues. Opened in December 2010, Muru has quickly grown in stature and was recently named the Finnish Society of Gastronomy's 2012 Restaurant of the Year. "We are doing everything properly: we have top quality staff and wines and ingredients in the kitchen. We are also thinking about ourselves. Also the seasons are very important. The atmosphere in the restaurant is relaxed and cosy. It is like I would invite you to my home. Our original idea was to make a small cosy bistro where you don't necessarily reserve a table. Yet, aside from the occasional passer-by on their way to a business luncheon, all remains calm and normal outside. We like to do this. But, given the perceived complications of offering different items daily, why go to the trouble of changing the menu so frequently. You can be yourself and relax and enjoy. 00100 Helsinki, Finland Tel. You can talk, laugh, cry if you want, or sing. You don't have to dress up in something special, you can come as you are. "It is not too stylish here. The prices are still reasonable and you will get the best service in Finland. Our prices are reasonable. Stepping off the street and entering the restaurant's dining area brings with it another surprise: none of the pomp and circumstance typically associated with such higher-end establishments seems to be on display. Just why are people willing to wait so long to sit down at Muru on a Friday or Saturday night. We think it's better to stay as an evening restaurant, because of the feeling. Celebrating two years of Chinese holistic massage in Helsinki
Two years ago we began offering our services in Helsinki our second year of working together for health and well-being!
Our broad selection of regenerating, stress-removing and revitalizing treatments has been very well received in Finland. The discounted price for the 8 subscriptions with the English exercise packages is only 336 euros for the school year. Grocery stores in the Helsinki Central Railway Station tunnel are open Mon-Sat 7-22 and Sun 10-22. Yes, we know that this is not funny and many have found themselves in the emergency room with broken wrists, herniated discs and sprained ankles, but it is my guilty pleasure to watch someone who is from Finland falling down. Then, the snow comes, and it comes with a vengeance. There'd be no need to look for all-but-disappeared car parks, which have all been eaten up by large blobs of snow. It is feasible, eco-friendly and you'd look so cool turning up to work and you could head straight to the coffee room for an après ski before work. We welcome You to experience the beneficial effects of our treatments on your health and well-being and to breathe new life into the spring together!

Snow ploughs are terribly efficient in this part of the world, but when there are so many housing complexes to service, there is often a lag between having your yard in walkable state and looking like the outer wastelands of Mongolia. Swirling snow obscures vision, causes fender benders and drops temperatures down to -15 some days and 0 on others. But no one does: it's way too uncool - it's one of those things that are relegated to the mummo and pappa category, along with the shopping trolleys in various neon colors which I secretly long for but would never be caught dead dragging around.
