The charges brought

Record number of serious
environmental offences
reported last year
Most environmental offences are never reported to the authorities, estimates Tarmo Lamminaho, an inspector at the National Police Board.
l e h t i k u va / ro n i r e ko m a a
A TOTAL of twelve cases of aggravated impairment of the
environment, more than ever
before, were brought to the
attention of the Finnish Police last year, indicates a report drawn up by a working
group monitoring the nature
and incidence of environmental crime in Finland.
Earlier, the incidence of
aggravated impairment of
the environment has varied between seven and
eleven cases per year, although in 2012 no cases were
brought to the attention of
authorities.
The offences are typically
related to negligence in storing, processing and disposing
of waste.
Among the cases recorded last year was the leak of an
estimated 500-1,000 litres of
toxic solvent from a paint
factory into the river Mätäjoki in Helsinki and the unlicensed dumping of hundreds
of tonnes of toxic chemicals
by a bankrupt recycling company in Padasjoki, Southern
Finland.
Tarmo Lamminaho, an inspector at the National Police

of soil are the most common
forms of environmental offences in Finland.

Muslims, made homeless after two days of anti-Muslim riots in Sri Lanka?s tourist region of Alutgama, demonstrate against radical

Asked to respond to reports of violence there, UN
spokesman Stephane Dujarric told IPS ?the secretarygeneral is concerned about

The Association of Sri

held a protest rally outside
the United Nations last week,
has sought intervention by
the secretary-general.
?We kindly request you
to intervene and ask the Sri
Lankan government to prevent hatred and violence
against Muslims and other minority communities in
Sri Lanka, and bring the perpetrators of the recent murders and violence to justice,?
says a letter addressed to the
secretary-general.
In a statement released
Wednesday, three UN human rights experts called on
Sri Lanka ?to adopt urgent
measures to stop the promotion of racial and faith-based
hatred, and violence against
Muslim and Christian communities by Buddhist groups
with extremist views, and
bring perpetrators of this violence to justice.
?More than 350 violent attacks against Muslims and
over 150 attacks against

years. But

facilities and staff can defeat even the best-intended
workers.
Both Molina and Brane
both voice concerns over the
speed with which the government is able to process
cases. Juanita Molina, executive director of Border Action
manent Representative Ambassador Palitha Kohona
told IPS, ?Sri Lanka can ill
afford any inter-racial or inter-religious conflict at this
stage, especially at a time the
country is recovering from
27 years of terrorist-inspired
violence.?
?While inter-racial and
inter-religious intolerance
is not unique to Sri Lanka,
the government of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa has unequivocally condemned the
recent violence in the country,. he said.
Kohona also promised
that justice will be meted out
to the wrongdoers.
?We must also address
our problems ourselves and
seek solutions from within
and resist the ready temptation to seek outside interventions to address essentially
domestic issues,. On Friday, the Obama

Others say that conditions today are not as bad.
?It?s definitely a place

everyone

ideal place for children. But
are children?s basic needs being taken care of. Mittelstadt says.
Yet she notes that it remains unclear whether the
new assistance represents a
one-time commitment or a
longer-standing pledge.
?I think this crisis underscores the dire need for
comprehensive
immigration reform,. ?The
numbers here are small in
comparison,. he added.
These have often been
led by members of hard-line
Buddhist groups with apparent links to government officials and none of them have
been adequately investigated, he said.
Most Sri Lankans, including the overwhelming Buddhist majority, want nothing
to do with the Bodu Balu Sena (BBS), which is accused of
instigating the violence, the

Rita Izsk, the UN Special
Rapporteur on Minority Issues, told IPS she was ?extremely concerned over the
situation in Sri Lanka and

attacks emerging over recent

Root causes
Meanwhile, immigration specialists argue that the root
cause of the issue is violence

which these attacks are taking place.

from Central America.
In June, President Barack
Obama announced that military bases would be converted to detention centres
to house the nearly 50,000
unaccompanied minors that
have arrived at the southern
US border in recent months.
Recent data says some
3,000 are being apprehended daily, though the reasons for their arrival remain
debated.
Meanwhile,
sentiment
is building against the plan,
with some suggesting the
detention centres could violate international rights
obligations.
?We?re very disturbed
to hear that the Obama administration plans to open
more family detention centre spots, starting with a
large facility in New Mexico,?
Clara Long of Human Rights
Watch, a watchdog group,
told IPS.

anxiety and cognitive damage. Asked for

of physical, verbal and sexual abuse by agents towards
children have also been

?We understand that we
need to get people away from
the border and process them,
so we don?t necessarily object to a short-term facility,?
Michelle Brane, of the Women?s Refugee Commission, an
advocacy group, told IPS.

In contrast, during the

the proportion of brown fat
went below the starting level.
An increase in brown fat
had the metabolic benefit of
boosting sensitivity to insulin. When a price

in a blink of an eye, traditional brick-and-mortar shops will
find it even harder to compete
with the online giant.
The biggest stumbling

Results in one month
The study by his research
team found that sleeping at
a room temperature of 19 degrees for just one month increased the amount of brown
fat. The phone can also be operated with hand and
eye movements.
Utilising Dynamic Perspective technology devel-
oped by Amazon, the phone?s
screen is unusual.
It is not a true 3D display but close to it. After this, the temperature was
cut to 19 degrees for the second month, raised back to

that one cooler month increased the amount of brown

A new player entered the mobile phone market two weeks
ago when the US online store
Amazon, known as the world?s
biggest bookseller and developer of the Kindle e-readers
and tablets, launched the longawaited Fire smartphone.
As the Fire Phone will only be available from 25 July, it
is still impossible to give a detailed review of its features
but something about them is
already known.
The phone is designed for
single-handed use without
the need to touch the screen.
Text and web sites can be
scrolled by tilting the phone.
To view menus and additional information, you only
have to tilt the phone in the
correct way. Controlled by movements, the phone?s most innovative
characteristic is, however, its close tie with the e-tailer.
J uh a M ati a s L ehtonen . plans
to revolutionise online shopping
The Fire Phone?s most remarkable feature is its close
connection with Amazon?s
ever-expanding online shop
activities.
Since the 1990s, Amazon
has revolutionised the retail
sector one step at a time, first
conquering the book market
and then turning e-books into a mainstream commodity with its Kindle reading
device.
Selling almost everything
under the sun, Amazon is expanding rapidly, particularly
in the United States.
Amazon also delivers
its products faster than ever, having launched delivery points in connection with
news agents in the UK and the
US where purchased items
can be picked up at anytime
that suits the buyer.
Amazon has also tested
unmanned drones in product
delivery but the US authorities have so far thwarted the
plans.
If Amazon finds the object
in the selection of its online
shop, it offers it to you to buy.
It is easy to guess brickand-mortar retailers will not
be over the moon about the
novel feature.
The owner of a Fire Phone
can walk into a shop, click on
the Firefly button anytime and
see if Amazon has the product on sale. The results were published in the
journal Diabetes.
?So in addition to unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, it is tempting to
speculate that the subtle
shift in temperature exposure could be a contributing
factor to the rise in obesity,?

their blood sugar levels down

Lee?s earlier studies have
demonstrated that people who
have more brown fat tend to be
lean and have lower blood sugar levels. Lee speculates that the
findings may help researchers to develop new treat-
ments for obesity and the
early stages of diabetes.
In his study, Paul Lee
monitored five men who
went about their lives as usual during the day but spent
the nights in temperaturecontrolled premises in a research centre.
For the first month, the
temperature at the centre
was kept at 24 degrees. he
speculated.

The user can navigate between views by tilting the phone.. He believes that the
new results are promising.
?The improvement in insulin sensitivity accompany-
ing brown fat gain may open
new avenues in the treatment of impaired glucose
metabolism in the future,. Sleeping in cooler temperatures triggers the body
to produce brown fat, which
stimulates metabolism and
burns calories, spurring
weight loss.
Janne Orava, a medical
expert from the University
of Turku, agrees with the results of the new study.
?Exposure to cold temperatures increases the proportion of the beneficial brown
fat. It only has a small selection of apps and Amazon?s
virtual ecosystem is not yet
ready to challenge Google.
The phone?s 3D display with
its gesture movement feature
may remain a mere fad if companies developing apps do not
get enthusiastic about it.
Amazon?s phone has also
been criticised for its price,
which is in the same category
with the top-end Apple and
Samsung devices.
To start with, we will have
to settle for observing the
Fire Phone?s performance in
the American market as the
European launch date has
not been revealed yet.
Two weeks ago, online store Amazon introduced its new mobile
phone Fire. SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

doctorate in medicine last
April, specialising in the effects of brown fat.
Babies have large quantities of brown fat, which raises their body temperature in
a cold environment. It has high-quality
sensors, which should allow
versatile use of the features.
Uncertain gesture
However, gesture commands and tilts are unlikely
to replace operation through
voice and touch.
The problem with gesture
commands is that they do not
bring the user any significant
benefits as human hands are
perfectly adapted to operating a touch screen of a phone
in normal circumstances.
Even if the Amazon novelty will not prove a frontrunner in gesture command
technology, it might signal a
different kind of revolution.

One in five American consumers confuse locally produced food and organically
grown produce, reveals a
study conducted by the University of Florida and published on the Science Daily
website.
Local food is produce
grown close to the place

refers to food produced
naturally.
In the study, 17 per cent
of the respondents assumed
that the two terms are interchangeable, while more than
20 per cent thought that local
food is automatically nongene modified.
Jaana Elo from the Finnish Organic Association
believes that Finnish consumers are more knowledgeable in this regard but
may confuse organic and fair
trade products.

Local food coordinator
Kirsi Viljanen from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has also noticed that
consumers sometimes have
trouble distinguishing between various food terms.
?Politicians and officials
often mention local and organic food in the same sentence, as does the media.?
The Finnish legislation
has given a stringent definition of what counts as organically produced food but this
not the case for local food.
Even though they share some
common values, both types
of produce have their own
development programmes
approved by the government.
Viljanen explains that
Finns commonly attribute
similar qualities to organic
and local food.
?People often think that
both come from small producers, do not contain additives and their ingredients
are traceable to the source.?
Viljanen believes the profusion of various labels and
logos organic and local produce have does nothing to
dispel the confusion among
consumers.

It?s once again time for a Seth Rogan comedy. Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton head a cast that also includes Jamie Bell, John Hurt and
Ed Harris, as things swiftly turn to a revolt between the classes. Such is the narrative treading of water that
things are almost comparable to last year?s Justin Bieber
PR debacle, as the pop muppet suggested that Frank may
just have been a ?Belieber?
had she been alive during the
present day. Dragging an oxygen tank behind
her from one scene to the
next, her low-key and natural performance is notable
for its unwillingness to conform to the norms of such a
role. Adapted

Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Drawing from

ty?s perceptions of feminine
beauty and acceptance. From the series Delicate Demons . A
super-powered locomotive hurtled around the planet, with the impoverished lower classes bringing up the rear carriages, while the privileged upper classes find themselves pampered up in the
front. See what you think.
Music hasn?t been the sole
focus of their attention, with
the artist finding her name
splashed across the headlines of many a global tabloid, due to her relationship
with model Ireland Baldwin.
Needless to say, her music
carries a little more weight
than tabloid fodder.

hurtle towards the suitably
emotion-filled climax aside
may see his acting wheels be-
gin to wobble, nonetheless,
his is a journey worth going
along with, as his bravado and
sense of humour continually
mask the grim realities surrounding him.
Thankfully, forced forays
into melodrama and heartstring-pulling are kept to a
bare minimal during the film.
Levelling any last gasp hope
for such is a memorable scene
involving Willem Dafoe?s supporting character, whose spectacularly cruel and bruising
perspective derails any notion that the film will continue along any well-worn path.
His scenes are worth the price
of admission alone, with his lionesque features remaining
as magnetic as ever as his fifth
decade draws to a close.
A visit to the Anne Frank
house feels contrived, however, making a far-fetched grab
at drawing parallels between
the two young girls, whose
struggles with adversity give
pause for thought at the fragility of life. Instead of
just merely presenting the
individual, each portrait contains a number of clues, commenting on the sitters, their
qualities and dreams.
Alongside the work of Ekström, the exhibition also
features portraits from the
museum?s collection by such
renowned artists as Christian Krogh, Tyko Sallinen
and Carl-Gustaf Lilius, and
Mikael Stierncreutz, Marjatta Tapiola and Icelandic Love

Seeking to challenge professional practices and to find
new working methods, the two
artists have worked closely together, often finding themselves in new and uncharted
territory. Delicate Demons . personality, status and values. Ekström
employs symbolism and attributes to take a stance on
the sitters. But will Bong?s dystopian sci-fi thriller suffer the same fate?
After the successes of The Host and Mother, Snowpiercer sees the director honing in on the
aftermath of a failed global-warming experiment that ushered in the dawn of a new Ice Age. Why have such a
scene other than to introduce
Frank to a new generation of
youth who might otherwise
be unaware of her story.
But, aside from this minor
tripping up and some relentless Apple product placement,
by the time proceedings round
the corner towards their conclusion, you may well be into your third or fourth tissue.
And this successful tweaking
of tearducts, no doubt, is helping fuel the film?s huge success.
Under the Haze gaze. Why
all of the fuss. With Zac Efron at the helm, soon audiences are treated to misplaced car airbags, a Robert de Niro theme party and James Franco?s younger brother.
Finally, Snowpiercer is Joon-ho Bong?s English-language debut, continuing the Hollywoodisation of South Korean directors, after the misfiring likes of Park Chan-wook?s Stoker and Kim
Jee-woon?s The Last Stand. Girls

Ekström?s most recent
work is seen with two portraits that seek to comment on
the traditional concept of portraiture, whilst simultaneously bringing it into the sphere
of contemporary art. What has gotten the tweenie crowd all in a
fluster, you may wonder.
Well, here tells the story of Shailene Woodley?s sixteen-year-old cancer patient,
a doomed realist who is forced
by her parents to attend a support group. The label retaliated by releasing the CDversion on 30 December, out

Such action on behalf of Haze
may have put a significant
dent in her album sales, but by
this stage her street cred was
well and truly established in
the public?s eye.

they also bid official farewell to the carefree days of their youth. Commissioned by the Swedish Cultural

Mark Kranjc is a journalism student from Canada. I?d
never been to another country that was as hockey-mad

is as effortless as breathing.
While the area around
Kallio is a little beaten down,
there is no shortage of beautiful places nearby. The liberal drinking that
takes place in the area gets
Finns chatting. From there you
can walk to nearly anywhere
in the city. Most of
them were in our new neighbourhood, Kallio. All of it fills me with fond
memories of many cold days
without much sunlight.
That neighbourhood is
still one of the first places I
go whenever I return to Helsinki on holiday. A quick
walk to Linnanmäki is divine, especially when the Ferris wheel lights up through
the fall foliage or reflects off
fresh snow. A few of the massage
parlors are being replaced
with clothing stores or cafés and the general level of
sketchiness is dwindling. From the guys at the
Sörnäinen metro, to the ones
who had too many beers at
Roskapankki, nobody wants
to mess with you. He is always happy to talk hockey with Finns.

The rest of the time it?s
a normal Finnish existence.
There?s a stunning mix of people that call Kallio home and
that?s part of what makes it

uncommon to see a drunk
