For
the park, landscape architect
Gretel Hemgård and her team
have designed an open and

better view of the palm house
in the Botanic Garden.
?It seems we won?t be

with regard to the openness

from Kaisaniemi Park,. The cost estimate of the
project is in the region of 10
million euros while the total
sum allocated for park renovation projects in Helsinki is
5 million euros per year.?
The plants in the Botanic Garden are being rearranged to form an ?evolution
tree?, which is to start from
the new gate and lead towards the palm house. In addition, the shawl was shown to have traces of other
bodily fluids: semen.
Traces of the kidney cells of the victim were found on the garment. Louhelainen was initially sceptic about the authenticity of the shawl but changed his
mind gradually. ?It was typical of Jack the Ripper to remove the internal
organs of the victims.?
The real breakthrough, however, did not occur until a group
led by Edwards located the descendants of both the suspected
serial killer and his alleged victim, whose DNA samples were later shown to match the semen of the suspect and the blood of the
victim, respectively. he says.
After the landscaping work
in Kaisaniemi is finished, gardeners will start planting, and
the evolution tree is set to open
to the public in a year.

Customer buying sex to have more responsibility

Pertti Pehkonen. Based on
the latest information, the
work won?t be carried out before the end of the decade,?
says Ahonen. Abuse of workers occurs also in the restaurant
and construction industries
but clients are not held responsible for these offences,
says Sexpo.
Human traffickers and
pimps also try to cover up
their tracks, making it difficult for clients to know the full
circumstances, Sexpo argues,
adding that the proposal creates a setting in which clients
are discriminated against.
FINLAND?s
Many reviews of the proposed law reform slammed
the proposal for relying too
heavily on the Swedish government?s report on the ban
in Sweden, where paying for
sex has been illegal for the
past 15 years.
According to the Swedish
report, the ban has succeeded in cracking down on sex
trade while not weakening
the position of sex workers.
The human rights organisation Amnesty International claims that several studies
have disputed the conclusions of the Swedish report.
Amnesty
International criticises the proposal
for failing to take the human rights perspective into
consideration.
?It is astounding that the
proposal does not contain
a report on how the reform
would affect the rights of the
victims of human trafficking
and pimping or immigrants
selling sex,. The contents of the
briefcase has allowed Louhelainen to determine the identity of
the infamous serial killer that held London in the cold clutch of
fear 126 years ago, Jack the Ripper.
Inside the briefcase was a shawl that had allegedly belonged
to Catherine Eddowes, one of the victims of Jack the Ripper. ?One goal of
having an open view is to increase the feeling of safety.?
The work on the outdoor
space of the Botanic Garden
is set to be completed in a
year?s time. says the
National Council of Women.
But there are also several organisations that oppose
the ban, arguing it would
put sex workers in a more
difficult situation. Gretel Hemgård
hopes that the budget will
stretch to the work required
for the new gate.
?We can always start the
work from one part of the
park. 4
11 . says Louhelainen.
This is the spot where a
new, grand entrance should
connect Kaisaniemi Park and
the Botanic Garden next year.
The staff of the park are
becoming riled: the outdoor
areas of the Botanic Garden are undergoing an extensive overhaul, which was
supposed to go hand in hand
with the renovation of Kaisaniemi Park, but the City of
Helsinki has not been pulling
its weight in the park project.
?Unfortunately, as far as I
know, the city has not got the
project off the ground yet,?
says Pertti Pehkonen, the
head gardener of the Botanic Garden. ?I hope they will save the tall trees. ?The city is under
a lot of pressure to complete
the work on the Töölönlahti
area and the central library,
which is why they haven?t
been able to make any progress with Kaisaniemi Park.?
Despite this, Pehkonen is
working on the assumption
that the opening of the new
gate will go ahead as planned.
?We will complete our side of
the area with a view to having
a new gate here but for that,
the city will have to at least
remove the tennis courts.?
Considerably
behind schedule
The City of Helsinki has not
been able to carry out any
work on Kaisaniemi Park as
no funding has been allocated
for the renovation, says Jarmo Ahonen from Helsinki?s
Public Works Department.
?For the next few years,
we don?t have funding for the
renovation project. If, for example, the proposal for the water feature in
Kaisaniemi is beyond the city?s
means at the moment, we
could build the new gate without overhauling the whole
park,. Considering that
the Helsinki City Council approved the plan already in May
2011, the renovation work is
considerably behind schedule.
?At the time, the plan was
for the work to kick off the
following year,. Visitors to the garden may walk
on the paths that form the
tree?s branches and see how
the plants descend from one
another. I prefer green and natural parks
to artificial spaces,. Anyone found guilty receives a fine or a maximum
sentence of six months.
? In 2012, the Supreme Court dismissed charges against a man
suspected of buying sex from a victim of human trafficking
on the grounds that the man could not have known the real
circumstances of the sex worker.
? The Ministry of Justice has prepared a proposal for a law, under which customers paying for sex face more responsibility.
? The maximum sentence would go up to a year.

oN A more positive note, the 57 venture capital invest-
ments into Finnish startups during the fist half of this
year was the highest round total of the nascent decade.
The connotations of this increase in funding activity
are only positive. King?s turnover
for the second quarter of the
year totalled just under 460
million euros.
Supercell?s turnover for
last year amounted to 672
million euros, a startling
jump from the year before
when its turnover was 78
million euros.
When sales figures for
both tablets and smartphones are totted up, Supercell came in sixth in July,
right behind Rovio, known
for its Angry Birds game.
When company turnovers
are looked at, Rovio, however, fails to make the top ten,
as its transition from pay-toplay to free-to-play games has
not been successful, reported
Helsingin Sanomat on Sunday.
The most profitable
games work on free-to-play
principle: they are free to
download but players can advance faster from one stage
to another by paying for ingame items.
According to App Annie?s
report, people spend more
money on games than any
other mobile apps.
Three quarters of the
money spent on iOS apps
goes to paying for games,
and the share is even larger
for Google?s Android devices.
In the second quarter of
the year, the money spent on
iOS games went up by 70 per
cent compared with the year
before. Duly 48 of the
recorded 57 funding rounds were classified as seed or
startup stage investments. Of game apps,
Supercell?s
strategy-based
game Clash of Clans generated
the highest turnover.
Swedish King Digital Entertainment, known for
Candy Crush Saga, took the
runner-up spot behind Supercell, while the third place
went to Gungho Online Entertainment, which is going
from strength to strength
on the Asian market. The sum more than
doubled for Android devices.

When one of the partners
becomes seriously ill, changes in looks are usually the
least of the couple?s worries.
In her doctoral dissertation, Katja Hautamäki-Lamminen found that the effect
of an illness on the relationship is partly dependent on
the sex of the partner who
becomes ill. The heady
initial stage of a relationship
lasts from one to two years.
After that, changes in sexual desire and the couple?s
feelings are inevitable,. herself, as she puts it,
she is concerned that things
have cooled in the bedroom
because her husband thinks
she has let herself go and
finds her less desirable, mirroring the way she sees him.
?If I?m this bothered by
the way he?s changed, I wonder how he feels. Many
say that this is because their
partner has gained a lot of
weight, something that both
men and women seem to
struggle with, according to
Piha.
Occasionally Piha has
prescribed medication to
treat erectile dysfunction in
healthy men to boost their libido and allow them to continue a normal sex life with
their partner. Losing their hair was harder for
many women than having a
mastectomy. That

For a person training

Paula did not initiate sex

having sex less often, and
when they made love Paula
found it difficult to shake off
distracting thoughts.
?I wasn?t fully involved
in sex and didn?t enjoy it the
way I used to. Piha says that
patients emphasise that
otherwise they have a good
relationship with their part-
ner and there is no infidelity
involved.
?These patients are not
criticising or blaming their
partner for the situation but
feel sad. The weight
gain made the early fizz of the
relationship go flat quicker.
?In my eyes, my wife was
a little less attractive and desirable even though I didn?t
like her any less,. It might have
been that I had yet to come
to terms with the diagnosis.?
How do people who look
physically different because
of an illness or other reasons
feel about their body?
Even though some women in Katja Hautamäki-Lamminen?s study said that their
partners had found it extremely difficult to look at
their bald heads, the person
who was the most bothered
by the changes was usually the patient herself. HT
aNNa is a 39-year-old woman
who has been with her husband for 11 years.
During that time, her
spouse has put on around 20
kilos and while the changes to his physical appearance are not dramatic,
Anna is bothered by the excess weight.
Sometimes when things
are heating up between the
sheets, Anna?s eyes are suddenly drawn to her husband?s
soft belly. Of the two

Juhana Piha, a specialist
in clinical physiology, sees a
growing number of patients
who are struggling with similar problems as Anna: people
in a long-term relationship
who are finding it difficult
to come to terms with the
changes in their partner?s

For the last two decades,
Piha has solely treated patients with sexual problems.
These days, he meets several patients every week who

When Maaret Kallio asks
couples who have come to her
for counselling about touching, the responses often fall
into two groups: some people
change the subject while others start to make jokes. The main factor was the
confidence boost that his
wife gained from the weight
loss, Matti says.
Even though the weight
gain had been partly to blame
for the sparkle fading in their
relationship, Matti now says
that his wife losing weight
did not make him feel differently about her.

Kirsi, 45, gained 50 kilos

Flatting the fizz
In his 50s, Matti is married to
a woman who gained around
20 kilos early on in their relationship. But
in a relationship where you live
under the same roof, physical
changes can?t be a secret.?
But such a secret remained
between Matti and his wife
who had gained a lot of weight.
The couple never talked about
the wife?s changed physical
appearance.
When the wife lost weight
and got back to her old size,
the couple?s sex life perked
up. I love my husband and
realise he won?t always look
the same. A lack of
proximity was one of the reasons behind the couple?s decision to divorce, says Kirsi.
They never talked about the
topic openly.
Discuss the changes
Sexologist
Leena-Rosenberg-Ryhänen says that,
however difficult, spouses should talk openly about
changes in physical appearance, whether caused by
weight gain, weight loss, illness or something else.
?The worst-case scenario for a person whose looks
have changed is that their
partner doesn?t find them
sexually desirable anymore.
But even that is something
that has to be talked about.
You have to learn to know
each other again.?
Rosenberg-Ryhänen advises couples to touch the
body that has undergone
changes together, with each
partner describing how it
makes them feel.

What to do if your partner gains weight,
becomes too thin or is ill. During the heady
early stages of getting to
know each other, the couple
made love up to four times
a week. Paula, who is in her forties, says that the exhaustion
they have both felt at times
has put the biggest dampener on their sex life.
However, there was a time
when Paula did not find her
husband as attractive as before. explains
research professor Osmo
Kontula.
But a lack of sex and physical closeness was mentioned
as a major factor in their decision to divorce by one in
five couples. says Matti.
In contrast to Anna and
Matti?s feelings, Maaret
Kallio, a specialist in sexual counselling at the Family
Federation of Finland, more
often meets people who are
concerned over their partner?s weight loss.
Even though training
hard, the spouse typically does not recognise they
might suffer from an eating disorder. These feelings set in
soon after the diagnosis, with
Paula struggling to see the
man, who regularly visited
doctors and physiotherapists,
as a husband and partner.
?The thought that the
spouse you know so well is
now disabled is not attractive. time. These
reactions tell Kallio that the
couples have failed to talk
about some essential issues,
such as weight gain or erectile dysfunction. Anna would
like to make love more often, even with the lights off,
but her husband has trouble
maintaining an erection. Some
days are better than others. They clearly find it
difficult to talk about, even
with a doctor,. says
Hautamäki-Lamminen.
In the Family Barometer of
the Family Federation, ten per
cent of the respondents mentioned illness as a contributing factor in the divorce.
Osmo Kontula says the figure is relatively high but the
survey did not include any
questions on how the illness
changed the relationship.

cases changes in one of the

?Partners often wish that
their spouses, who are really pushing themselves physically, could also relax, lounge
on the sofa and allow themselves to be lazy. Problems in
a relationship are, however,
much more often rooted in
a lack of communication between spouses than changes
in physical appearance, says
Kallio.
?Of course the discussion
must be discreet in tone. As Matti found his
wife less desirable when she
got bigger, this soon dropped
to twice a week. In her study published in 2012, Hautamäki-Lamminen interviewed
altogether 20 men and women who had been diagnosed
with cancer.
The men who had become
ill believed their relationship had not been affected by their illness, while the
women said their partners

?People are shying away
from buying large houses
that need more done to them
than a lick of paint. Even in the capital region, prices are slightly down
compared with last year in
certain areas. In Finland in general,
residents paid 1.12 euros per
square metre for their district heating, translating into almost a quarter of their
monthly maintenance fee.
Based on these figures, a
family living in a 90-square
metre flat may have to pay 50
to 70 euros extra for their energy, depending on the region
of the country they live in.
tightening
of regulations
The spiralling district heating
costs are a result of the tightening of the carbon credit regulations for industrial emissions.
To date, the carbon credit system has only played a minor
role in energy prices as district heating plants have been
granted free emission rights.
In future, power plants
and industrial facilities emitting carbon dioxide will be
granted fewer free emission
rights. HT

of all houses and flats are

District heating plants
use natural gas, coal, peat
and renewable energy sources, such as wood and biogas, as their fuel. There is
more demand for small places in a top-notch condition,

Hämäläinen speculates
that price statistics are

the average price for small

At Saarioinen, the trends
are also assessed critically.
?If trends are unhealthy,
it is wrong to start pursuing them. Use
a slotted spoon to quickly transfer to the ice-water bath. The time for processing in the water bath is calculated

shedding
light on the trends
David Sax, who has written a
book called The Tastemakers
and was quoted in an article
on the Munchies food page of
Vice magazine in August, shed
some light on the matter:
?Nowadays, we can make
a choice of what we put in our
mouths but the remaining
fact is that our appetite is a
collective thing. From Cathy Barrow, author of Mrs. We want to
experience new because we
want to be part of the modern day.?
According to Sax, social media affects the emergence and broadening of food
trends.
Mirja Lonka, the director of product development
at Saarioinen, says that they
constantly follow food trends
elsewhere in the world.
?The difficult part is to
know what foods will become
a real trend, and which are
just passing,. For safety?s sake, do not alter the jar size, ingredients, ratios or processing time in any canning recipe. Peel and core
all of them, seed all of them, chop all of them. If moved
to change any of those factors, simply put the prepared food in
the refrigerator and eat within a week.
Fill a large canning kettle or deep stockpot two-thirds full
with water. Leave the jars until they have
completely cooled, at least 12 hours. For example, the opinions
of top chefs, food reporters
and food bloggers are closely
followed. Plan on a hard boil for about half an
hour . At
the moment, consumers are
interested in affecting their
health with food.
?What we put in our
months interests us more all
the time.?
Lonka believes that being ecological, ethical and
healthy will continue to be
popular in the future, too.
?Traditions and nostalgia
are on the rise in addition to
those.?

This peachy tomato salsa marries sweet, tangy and spicy into a handy pantry staple . Bring to a boil

The peaches and tomatoes should be firm and just barely ripe. no longer. Perhaps Karelian

is nothing new. one so vigorous that the stuff will spit a bit, so be careful.
The lexicon of preserving often seems arbitrary, a mystery

peachy tomato salsa. a topping for halibut, chicken or pork.
FAsHIoNAbLe foods currently include pulled pork and
strongly flavoured Korean

a familiar ingredient, even in
chain pizzerias.
Between being unknown
and familiar, octopus was
trendy for a while. That will reduce
siphoning, in which the food burbles up under the lid, breaking
the seal. To keep the jars from rattling against the pot, place
a rack in the pot. When
serving as a dip for chips, stir in some chopped fresh cilantro at
the last minute. For a less spicy salsa, remove and discard the
seeds from the Serrano chili pepper. The less time the fruit spends cooking,
the more fresh the resulting salsa will taste when you open a jar
six months down the road.
Consistency-wise, the mixture is ready when the fruit is no
longer floating on the surface of the saucy liquid in the pot, but
is suspended throughout. refrigerate after opening.
Notes: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Use the jar lifter or tongs to transfer the jars to a folded towel, keeping them upright. As we choose the
trends we follow, we try and
take into account the nutritional recommendations.?
Different studies on consumers are made at Saarioinen. How those
trends begin, however, is
more puzzling.
Researcher of future food
trends, Leena Jokinen from
University of Turku, says
that food fashions develop in
a similar manner to clothing
fashion.
?At the same time, there
are many different fashions,?
Jokinen says.
As in clothing fashion
there are trendsetters who
make a certain food popular. Try it
with Manchego cheese or spooned over queso fresco. When the pieces of fruit are
cooked unpeeled, their skins will curl up into tough, unpleasant
bits throughout the salsa.
To make the jobs go smoothly, follow this tip I learned from
a chef: Do one task at a time, all the way through. When all of the jars
are in place, the water should be 2-5 cm above the jar tops. Bring the water to a low boil before starting
the timer for processing.
At the end of processing, turn off the heat and let the jars sit
in the water bath until the boiling has stopped. refrigerate after opening. To begin with, it was only
served in exclusive restaurants. Jokinen has a simple explanation for why food
trends change constantly:
she thinks that food trends
are replaced by new ones because we want variation.
In August, The New York
Times discussed the emergence of food trends. Store in a cool, dark place for up
to 1 year. in the bottom of each tomato and remove the stem.
Place in the boiling water for 10 or 15 seconds . For a mild salsa, omit the
Serrano altogether.
mAKe AHeAD: The salsa can be stored in a cool dark place for
up to 1 year. Fill
a small saucepan with water and add the rings. How a
food becomes trendy, on the
other hand, is affected by
many things.
Traditions and nostalgia influence food trends. Ladle into hot jars, leaving 1 cm head space.
? Clean the rim of each jar, place the warmed lids and finger
tighten the rings (not too tightly). It is said that the
human mind learns a task though repetition, and by completing each one with all the tomatoes and peaches, you will gain
skill and familiarity, speeding the experience.
By adding just the fleshy fruit of the tomato and peach, without any excess juices, the salsa will require less time to reduce
to the right consistency. Having worked for thirty
years in the industry, Lonka has noticed that consumers value different things. Use a jar lifter to transfer the jars to a clean folded dish towel to cool for several
hours.
? Label and date the sealed jars. in the skin on the base of all the peaches and tomatoes
while a pot of water comes to a boil. Stir well.
? Place over medium heat; cook, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Why is one berry-sugar-lemon concoction called a jam
and another preserves and still another confiture. I simply decided this recipe is a salsa.
A sauce. a topping for halibut, chicken or pork. Blanching and peeling them is a bit of extra bother, I

As the box office slows to a crawl after a
long and tepid summer season, one wonders what gems
lie around the corner to reverse the trend of average
fare appearing on screens.
Thankfully, the appearance of the Helsinki International Film Festival on the
horizon promises a cavalcade of silver screen delights
to enjoy, sorely lacking from
multiplexes in recent times.

Here six young spelunkers head underground to explore the catacombs that

and couples walking hand-inhand. After last
year?s season at Finnish National Opera was brought to
a close with the superb gala
of Kenneth & Friends, the momentum continues with Le
nozze di Figaro.
Originally composed in
1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart, the opera is a tangled web of relationships.
Here Marcellina calls in
an old debt in order to tie the
knot with Figaro. With the majority of their songs clocking
in at well past the ten-minute
mark, it?s safe to say that it
may take a while before mainstream radio embraces them.
Formed in Eugene, Oregon in 1996, the trio initially drew on the influences
of frontman Mike Scheidt,
whose love of Sleep, Cathe-
dral and Black Sabbath oozed
through the thick barrage of
riffs they soon produced.
Debut full-length Elaborations of Carbon dropped at
the turn of the century, followed by sophomore effort
Catharsis in 2003. Hosted by Ágnes
Kaszás and her friends, the
theme traverses issues related to the homesickness
and identity crises faced by
immigrants.
Finally, InterKultYouth
takes over Stoa on Sunday.

Alex Komlosi, the production

Recently released the aptly titled Clearing the Path

laugh.
He started laughing as
well. Their grammar was
nearly flawless. We
both know the weather is
bad, so all you need to do
is agree and make another
comment to keep our conversation going?
After a long and awkward
silence he said:
?Okay. I still think it may be
worth a visit though. 17 september 2014

Our beautiful facility in Helsinki is a genuine Chinese oasis to
which you are heartfelt welcome. Even
if I had time I wouldn?t go
there, but you can go there as
a foreigner. It was
in November 2011 and the
weather was bad. I knew that this
moment was special because
he started to understand that
the goal of our conversation
was in relating as two guys
from different cultures who
found something they could
talk about and joke about.

26.06.2014. This cultural
trait, however, often fails to
resonate with cultures that
rely on the delicate use of
language in communication.
As a trainer I was impressed at how well Finnish professionals were able
to articulate themselves in
English. They have
a lot of snow and I heard it?s
beautiful?.
I smiled at him and he sort
of smiled at me. The weather is
bad but the snow will give us
some light.?
?Yes, it will and I may be
going to Lapland this winter
to learn how to ski. It?s
too far away and I really don?t
have time to go there at all.
My responsibilities keep me
in Helsinki and Sweden. Finns are
fairly direct in how they communicate with each other
and this is a cultural distinction appreciated within the
confines of Finnish culture
because it is raw, honest and
lacks pretence. Lots of foreigners visit there, but you should
go there with a Finn.?
?Why??
?Because you?re a foreigner,. Despite accents their pronunciation
was clearer than many other nationalities who spoke
English as a second language.
However I quickly found that
many Finnish professionals, with impeccable English
skills, would not or could not
use small talk as a way to develop rapport and use it strategically in business.
I have a story about teaching a Country Manager at a
major Finnish company small
talk. he said.
In this series expatriates write about their lives in Finland.
Send us your story to expatview@helsinkitimes.fi
After an awkward silence
I said, ?Thanks for letting me
know that. At least I
think he smiled.
?It?s nice, but you?re black.
There aren't many black people in Lapland,. Great! I?m definitely
going then.?
?You can go but I don?t like
it,. His
new responsibilities would
call for him to use his English on a broader stage with
Sweden and other European
countries.
For our first lesson I began with the weather. I?ll keep that in
mind. The ice was broken and
we were joking about a common subject. You could talk
about the weather, children,
spouses, sports or politically neutral current events.
In Finland, however, I found
that despite their fluency in
English many professionals
rarely mastered the social
art of small talk. Nice weather we?re
having right??
He looked at me with a
confused look, peered outside and said to me with a serious look.
?Nice weather. We were
seated in a large austere conference room reserved for
managers.
After introductions I began the conversation, ?Hey
Antti. 27.08.2014. I
don?t like it very much. In New York I worked in
sales at various large companies and learned early on
that selling anything to anyone meant quickly establishing credibility and likeability.
You had to know your stuff
and develop rapport.
That meant engaging in
small talk. he said.
?When I go I?m going to
bring you along as my Finnish
guide,. It was a
cold day outside and it was
snowing terribly. Success of the largest chain
of spas in China, Liangtse, continues in Europe. Have
you been to Lapland lately??
?No, I don?t go there. he said with grin.
?Ok. Why would you
say that??
I knew at that moment I
had my work cut out for me.
I smiled at him and said,
?You?re right, Antti, but we?re
just making small talk
