the way for the European Union of today, with its 28 Member States. The strength
of a state based on the rule of

cases, at home and abroad,
and so far Europe has underscored gravely. Instead,
when an interim deal was
arrived at, several Western
media broadcasted curiously overwhelmingly negative
reactions from the region.
However, dialogue is the only way out of an impasse, and
obstacles to the dialogue can
come both from within and
outside. In a

governed by law, with no

position in the mining industry and top ranking in terms of

This is a legacy that can and has to be applied as a
remedy to the problems as witnessed today in the case
of Talvivaara. This vast area rich in natural resources
with relatively weak or nonexistent state structures
made an easy target and a lucrative playground for powerful states. With
the bene?t of hindsight, certain things should probably
have been done differently, could have been done better.
But like young children growing up, companies like Talvivaara are bound to get scratches and bruises as they are
moving off the beaten track in their attempt to adapt to a
rapidly changing world with new and ever increasing demands. It is present in the people employed in the mining

Lessons of European integration, the transformation

European institutions have
relevant institutional knowhow and tradition to support
the consolidation of the rule
of law and the ?rst steps of a
dialogue both between states
and between a state?s minority groups and the governing elites. Regardless of
challenges, the European Union continues to be an area of
economic and social wellbeing not found anywhere
else. In such a case other dynamics are prevalent in
the governance. Criticism is right and an
important part of the learning mechanism, while at the
same time enough time and tolerance is needed for corrective actions to be developed and implemented. Otherwise the risk is to throw out the baby with the bath water.
Finland has a valuable mining history, running at the
forefront of applying innovative mining and processing

Middle East is to a great extent an arti?cial construct,
created by Western Orientalists in the 19th and early
20th century. Most of that expertise and
know-how is still available and is continuously further developed. Before such a conclusion
can be reached careful analyses of the causes and possible remedies should be undertaken. Life in nature, but
also in business, is too valuable to dispose of too quickly.
Indeed, in the case of Talvivaara, its operations have
not been able to meet expectations, errors appear to have
been made. Now it is high
time to contribute to peaceful change in the Middle East.
David Cord, in his article suggests to apply euthanasia to Talvivaara, take it off its life support and let it die

Markus Pasula, the CEO
of the Helsinki-based game

that the projected growth
?gures are hardly unusual. Carl Haglund
(SFP), the Minister of Defence, told STT that he has
requested a report from
the Defence Forces on the
matter and that he will not
comment on it further until receiving the report.
The Defence Command
has denied deliberately violating the State Budget
Act. The arrangement was illegal also under the
Swedish legislation.
The increase in gaming is partially due to the proliferation of tablets and smartphones.
Novel growth
In fact, the novelties are expected to allow the video
games sector to maintain its
double-digit growth rate until 2017, the projections by
IDATE show.
Pasula predicts that mobile gaming will similarly
continue to grow at an annual rate of more than ten per
cent. The

Aleksi Teivainen . Also the games will
get better in time.?
The advancements in
games, Pasula explains, are
due to the improved performance of new devices, which
allow for the development of
better games.
In free and online games,
Asian countries are the forerunners, with online games
domineering the gaming
markets in China and South
Korea and with gamers overall embracing the possibility
of paying real money to advance in games.
Finnish game studios have
also caught the attention of
Asian gamers. Less than ten per
cent of the funds received by
the church are used for social
work, while the majority is
used to maintain churches,?
Karisma says.
The website of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of
Finland indicates that two
thirds of its operational costs
in 2012 were personnel costs.
Pasula explains the
growth projections with the
next-generation consoles unveiled by Sony, Nintendo and
Microsoft in time for the holiday season.
?New models always
bring growth,. he says.
One factor that has contributed to the growth of mobile gaming is the booming
number of gamers, which in
turn is attributable to the in-
creasing prevalence of tablets and smartphones. The dent created by a resignation in 2003,
for example, has therefore
deepened by the year.
The website also predicts
that Finns will continue to
resign from the church in
the coming years. In its statistics, the
church contrastively estimates that the average annual church tax payment of its
members is roughly 180 euro.
According to Karisma,
the gap is attributable to the
fact that Eroakirkosta.. Aarnio, suspected of accepting bribes,
was thus involved in setting up an illegal front company in
Finland in the early 2000s.
In 2001, when the company was established, the
Finnish Police did not have the authority to set up a cover
organisation. It is unsure about the
credibility of the Defence
Forces. The Helsinki police
claim the current police management had no knowledge of
the cover operation. In
addition, the estimate takes
into account the different
church tax rates of Finnish
municipalities.
On average, the website gauges, a member of
the church has been liable
for 200 euro in church tax
per year. Finland should therefore move toward secularity,
due to the private nature of
religion and convictions.
?Those who care for the
church should support it. The
majority of Finnish game
studios develop games speci?cally for the said devices.
Overall, the ?gures reported by IDATE bode well
for the growth prospects of
the games industry. 80,0%
The percentage of Finns who belong to church has decreased
by 13.6 per cent between 1980-2012.

THIS stalemate is immensely harmful to both sides. In a blog post, even
Stubb concedes that the WTO isn?t working but we still
have these bilateral agreements and trade areas. But we should
have done better.
BECAUSE the world can?t come together to make glob-
al agreements on trade we are increasingly using bilateral agreements, like the free trade deal between
the US and Australia, or regional trading blocks such
as the European Economic Area. As
part of the pact, the WTO
then sanctioned the union?s
agricultural subsidies.
With the subsidies granted to food producers in developing countries now rising
steadily, Marttila believes the
union has already cut its agricultural subsidies too much.
?The pact prescribed that the
rest of the world can take
steps to encourage production. Yet for some reason
we remain fundamentally opposed to this. The reasons
are always sel?sh: we want to export, but we don?t
want imports. To give them credit, this will have a positive impact. The
United Nations can?t even agree on the wording of nonbinding resolutions. There are a host of reasons why
the talks failed, but a major issue was agriculture. 18 DECEMBER 2013

?A failure today, and they
would?ve pulled the plug on
the faltering Doha talks,?
suggested Juha Marttila, the
chairman at the Central Union of Agricultural Producers
and Forest Owners (MTK).
The major bones of contention in the negotiations
were tariffs on and subsidies
for agricultural products,
with the developing countries demanding that their
products not be subjected to
import tariffs.
Although the demand
was granted, it does not affect the Finnish retail sector as tariffs on agricultural
products imported into the
European Union from least
developed countries were already removed in 2001. We couldn?t have
a post-Kyoto Protocol climate change agreement. Certainly imports can hurt speci?c domestic industries, but the sum of bene?ts of free trade
almost always exceeds the costs.

estimated to reduce the cost
of trading by 10-15 per cent.
?In its sphere, it?s a remarkable achievement. We
developed nations want to subsidise our farmers and
don?t want food from developing nations. The
implementation of the contractual obligations will enable us to tear down barriers
BUT FINALLY, for the
?rst time in their history, the WTO has
actually signed an
agreement at the latest negotiating round in Bali. Data published
recently by Statistics Finland
show that over the threemonth period the labour
costs of the state grew by 4.0
per cent and the labour costs
of the municipal sector by 2.9
per cent on the previous year.
In the private sector, in
contrast, labour costs only crept up by 0.6 per cent
year-on-year.
LABOUR
The developments are attributable to the distinct employment situations in the
sectors, namely the extensive lay-offs and temporary
lay-offs introduced in the
private sector.
In a longer term, the gap
is not as wide. The agreement basically cuts red tape,
because some countries use these measures to limit
trade instead of tariffs, which everyone is afraid to be
caught using.

Dotcom founded Megaupload in 2005. The US Department of Justice is accusing

Dotcom
acknowledges
that this was plainly a joke.
Prosecutors have argued
that Dotcom and his partners
uploaded large quantities of
illegal ?les on the service.
The defendants strongly deny this.
According to the prosecution Dotcom created a
rewards program which encouraged users to infringe
copyrights. For people to
call me the James Bond villain is more about the larger
than life characters that are
portrayed in those movies.
But I think James Bond would
have a good time here. I?m

such as the estate rent. Kim says on

?But it is really good climate, I like the fresh air, I like

For a man who has taken
huge risks, he seems surprisingly cautious. Later the police chief had to

In retrospect, it became
clear that many other things
with the police raid had gone
wrong.
Dotcom and his companions spent several weeks behind bars.
The company?s and defendants. Piracy did not
disappear from the Internet
after the closure of Megaupload. He?s talking
about the population explosion and depletion of natural
resources. As his family grew
bigger, he wanted cleaner and
safer surroundings for his
children to grow up in.
?In New Zealand there are
no poisonous animals, no nuclear power. We
could play poker. In one of them, chief
programmer Bram van der
Kolk wrote: ?We have a funny business ... According to the Megaupload

According to the prosecution, Dotcom and his partners cleverly made use of the
intellectual property rights

Kim and his family moved

the same reasons from Hong

Dotcom?s point of view:
He was a former hacker,
who had previous criminal
convictions.
He spent his life of luxury

He had the reputation of
being an arrogant man.
If the United States wanted to show the world that pirates negligent of copyrights

ybody. He

But is he a worst class cyber criminal, as it seems?
The US indictment language is tough. It?s a novel case,
it?s a test case, there has never
been a case like this in history,
and the law doesn?t even have
a criminal statue for secondary copyright infringement,?
Dotcom says.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation had been investigating Megaupload for a
couple of years before the
prosecution.
Among other things, emails between Dotcom and
his partners are used as evidence. For example, on popular
online services such as YouTube and Rapidshare, intellectual property rights are
violated on a regular basis.
In 1998, the United States
introduced legislation that actually protects services like
Megaupload: administrators
are not responsible for what
the service?s users are doing,
as long as they are not aware
of illegal activities and remove
the illegal material at the request of the copyright holder.
Dotcom says that Megaupload
acted in this manner. Kim?s dozen cars, including a Rolls-Royce, were
con?scated.
According to Kim?s boastful sense of style he had acquired special register plates
for his cars, such as GOD,
GOOD, EVIL, HACKER, POLICE. Kim
Dotcom operated in the greyest corners of the Internet.
According
to
Kim,
Megaupload was just a huge
hard drive connected to the
Internet, and using it had
been made quick and easy.
Similar services in the cloud,
he says, exist to this day, but
they have been left alone
from criminal prosecution.
This is true. 18 DECEMBER 2013

Dotcom himself feels that
the claims are ridiculous
and completely unfounded.
The indictment, he says, is a
?press release?, serving only
the purpose of defaming him.
This is what most suspects say, but the Dotcom
case actually is also legally
very open to interpretation.
For this reason, his extradiction has been delayed. The more soughtafter an uploaded ?le was,
the more Megaupload paid
for it.
Dotcom does not deny

been practically impossible

Kim also defends himself by the fact that Megaupload might have violated the
privacy of the users if it had
started ?ltering the ?les.
?The United States wants
to make me responsible for
the actions of our users. To watch a ?lm in
full, one had to pay.
Copyright issues are complex, and the story is full of
legal quibbling, but Dotcom?s
defense is actually quite
simple.
He spreads his hands.
He says that he could not
and was not able to take responsibility for what service
users uploaded.
Enforcement of intellectual property rights was
therefore not his responsibility. That is important. For example, their
Megavideo service let one

72 minutes
He became
pursued by the police and
faced the wrath of the hacker
community. He is good at knocking down the prosecution?s
allegations, one at a time. It has to
be really dark. Kim hired
his old hacker buddies, such
as Mathias Ortmann, to his
company. His cars are black, and
Kim almost always wears
the same clothes: black hooded jacket, black loose jogging
pants, black ?at cap. It was a lot of money
for a young man.
?I?m not trying to justify
it. Total bullshit. I watched
these James Bond movies and
I saw underwater cities, private islands, space stations,
fuel tankers turning to superyachts. On the other
hand, Kim is always the one
who makes the decisions.
According to Batato, Kim
is generous to his employees
and friends. Other hackers were dismayed,
but Kim was enchanted by
publicity.
?I was a young kid, childish and silly, and I thought
that working with the media was cool. When I dream, I can ?y.
I can jump off a bridge, and
I will ?y and then I want to
leave earth. When I
dream, I am able to steer the
dream to a certain direction,
you know. I have never smoked. When I buy a car,
it has to be the best model. He has pledged to
tell more about it on the second anniversary of the raid
next January.
Kim?s lawyers have indicated that New Zealand?s
intelligence service had
snooped on him illegally.
The court also judged the entire raid illegal because there
was not suf?cient justi?cation for the search warrant.
It was also illegal for the po-
lice to send a copy of the hard
drives seized in the raid to
a foreign law enforcement
agency, the FBI.
Dotcom has sued the New
Zealand police and intelligence agencies for eavesdropping and is claiming
compensation for the damages. I love new
things and cars are my passion. 16

that he had tampered with
chancellor Helmut Kohl?s
credit history. Kim says.
Why did the United States
undertake such an impressive operation, if the indictment is based on such shaky
grounds?
In Kim?s view, the reason
is simple.
A scapegoat was needed.
Dotcom says that the
United States has offered an
agreement, but he says no to
such consent.
?This time I?m prepared to
?ght and I?m going to ?ght it
all the way. It is also clear that the
company bene?ted from copyright infringement.
But according to Dotcom, this does not mean
that Megaupload is guilty of
crimes.
?The Internet has a problem with piracy and so does
Megaupload and all other sites,
YouTube as well,. In Germany, the
hackers also met face to face.
In one of these meetings Kim
met a reporter and decided to give an interview. 18 DECEMBER 2013

Dotcom is regarded in New Zealand as gasbag and a misunderstood anti-hero fighting against the
regime. Kim has not seen
his father for a long time. At least it is clear
that the Hollywood ?lm industry interest group MPAA
has been lobbying decisionmakers in both countries.
?John Key is an Obama

nothing but gruel or toast

Kim decided already as
a child that he would be rich
when he grew up. Unless the deal

I got sentenced for it under

There was an unexpected
consequence. Since
then, he has become a cult
?gure of a gasbag, a misunderstood anti-hero ?ghting
against the regime.
Public opinion in New
Zealand is that Dotcom has
been abused and that the
theatrical raid on his estate
was conducted to suck up
to the Americans. I know it sounds
crazy, but it?s really quite
cool. There
are no lawyers or press of?cers running around during
the interview.
In the course of the extradiction trial Kim has taken a number of wins in court
and in public. I
have never been drunk in my
life. She met a German man, moved with him to
Germany and soon found herself expecting a baby.
Kim?s father was an
alcoholic.
?When he drank, he
turned aggressive, and he
beat my mum. When he tells about his
suspicions in detail, it is the
only time when he asks me to
switch off my recorder.
When Dotcom moved to
New Zealand, he kept a low
pro?le at ?rst, and he was regarded with suspicion. He stole phone card details for telecom operators
and and made calls, earning at least 75,000 German
marks. though a tin one.
There is also a vineyard.
Kim walks in the terrace area
and motions in the direction
of a ?ower garden.
?We are so lucky,. It is a
beautiful place.?
He is a strange person.
?I have a huge ego,. Kimble was still a minor when
he established two toll telephone services for chatting,
one in Hong Kong and the
other in the Netherlands Antilles. I have always enjoyed my toys and
that?s all it is: they just got bigger. When I go to bed, I
need a really good bed, just
the right kind of pillows and
a blanket. Including to the
220 staff who lost their jobs.?

when I said: none of that for

Occasionally Kim behaves
like a clown and the swank
spirals out of control. The technology used in
his web services has always
been impressive. To journalists,
hacking was magic. Kim likes to drive
around them in his customised golf cart.
On one of the hills stands
a giraffe . In this way
he could guarantee his mother a comfortable standard of
living.
?Of course there were other motivations: just wanting
to be successful. He has
one hundred pairs of hooded
jackets and jogging pants in
his closet.
?If I dress in white, I look
like a gigantic Michelin-man.?
Again a hearty laugh.
Then he gets more serious.
?Even Steve Jobs often used to wear the same
clothes?, Kim says casually.
He likes this metaphor. he
admits.
He takes himself seriously, but also knows how
to laugh at himself and his
weight.
For example, he tells us
what happened at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Sports car company Lamborghini?s representative assured Kim that, yes, he could
?t in the company?s latest
model, because its cab was designed for basketball star Dennis Rodman. When Kim
managed to lure his mate Kimi Räikkönen to race with
him on the Nürburgring motor track, a very handsome
video of the race was made,
using even aerial photos taken from a helicopter.
Black is his favourite colour. ?I have a huge ego,. He
says he also shares the legendary Apple founder?s interest in details.
Although Kim is a former hacker, he hasn?t actually hard-coded for decades.
He comes up with an idea,
discusses it with his henchmen and lets them take care
of the implementation. Hundreds of people
around laughed with tears in
their eyes.
?My God. When I?m dreaming, it?s really cool to be able
to do that.?
Family history
Kim Schmitz was born in
Kiel, northern Germany, in
1974.
His mother was a native of
the Turku area. So
I never drank any alcohol. It is easy to believe of a man who has made
spending money a form of
art.
Plenty to talk about
Despite his impressive dimensions, Kim does not
seem scary. New Zealand Prime Minister John
Key has had to apologise for
the illegal interception of
Dotcom?s communications.
Kim, in turn, described the
prime minister as a ?liar. German hackers
later said that Kim was not a
good hacker, but a big mouth
who took credit for others?
deeds.
What is certain about
those days, however, is that
among other things, Kim was
working on a deception. When
done, he tells them what little things have gone wrong.
Kim?s closest co-workers, such as Finn Batato and
the chief technology of?cer
Mathias Ortman, seem genuinely respectful towards Kim
and his vision. Nobody needs 14
cars, but if I didn?t have them, I
would probably have a new car
every two months, because
I?m quickly getting bored.?
Style questions may be debatable, but at least Kim is a
pedant and he demands quality. So to me that was
the kind of out-of-the-box
thinking: there is really no
limit to anything. ?Things bloom all year
round and smell good. If you want
to do it big, you can.?
When Kim was about
12 years old, everything
changed. Also very important: it is totally silent.
No devices beeping, no sound
of anything, just completely
quiet and no light. and
promises to produce more
evidence for his claim.
Kim claims that in the
background of the raid there
is a dirty political game being played in the US and New
Zealand. His mum worked
long hours, including a job
as a cook. He talks a lot and
is not shy with any questions.
He likes long monologues in
which he reveals all kinds of
things.
Such as: ?Sleep is the
greatest luxury. I?ve stuck to that for
12 years. For example, a couple of years ago,
he organised the largest ?reworks display in the country?s history at Auckland
harbour. If I go on
a holiday, and I sleep in a hotel room, and even if it?s the
best hotel, it?s a nightmare.
Either the curtains don?t
close correctly, or the aircon is screaming NAAAHH, or
there is an alarm clock blinking, ?ashing with blue light
and stupid stuff like that.
And there is a reason for it.
Because when I dream, I?m in
charge of my dream. he admits.
Megaupload traf?cking of illegal copies of movies and

the latest entertainment systems. And then I just

up a girl, and I have a good
time with that girl. Fucking embarrassing,. The room temperature must be right. He wanted to help
Hollywood because the studio threatened that they will

says he does not know whether he is still alive, and doesn?t

Kim stayed with her

the New Zealand politics big
time. You know
it?s crazy. No. He switched to the

sighs. Because I didn?t want to be like
him.?
Kim?s parents divorced

school age. You were like the
Wizard of Oz, who has the
world at his ?ngertips and
who can turn off the power
and ?re rockets from space.?
Soon Kim was on TV, with
his own face, revealing the
secrets of the hackers. They had fun by breaking into phone lines and
making free calls to foreign
countries.
Kim?s hacker name was
Kimble. About 370,000 dollars went up in smoke.
?I?m a big baby. He suspects that his
mansion is still under surveillance. It?s all about gadgets.
It?s all about toys. Kim says, his ?nger
pointing at his upper lip.
His mother and Kim ?ed
these temper tantrums to
shelter homes.
?It was a dif?cult time. This also reduced his sentence.. When you
have a lot of money, life gets
really busy. He got his ?rst
computer.
?Technology made me realise that there were so many
more important things than
those that were taught at
school. he says.
?But our service had a lot
of perfectly legitimate use,
such as freeware, home videos, photos.?
The indictment alleges
that Megaupload caused copyright holders damages as
much as 500 million dollars.
Dotcom laughs at the
claim. So school became
secondary to computers.?
At that time, in the late
1980s, the Internet was not
yet widely known, but the
hackers were able to talk
via modems . At least one minister
has been forced to resign.
Illegal investigations
Now, Kim is setting up his
own party. He
is his own PR manager. Telecom operators and credit card companies began calling Kimble.
They wanted to know how
hackers cheated them.
Kim realised that this was
his chance. Of
course, he got stuck in the cab.
It took four men to pull
him out. After some sales

wizardry. and steal data. They are more expensive,

events in painful detail.
After six months in prison
the prosecutor offered a deal:
if Kim would confess to the
crime, he could be immediately released and only be ?ned.
?My lawyer said I should
not confess, because we
would win. Kim talks
about her as the love of his life.
Public
relations knows best
Is Kim Dotcom a true rogue
or an imaginative innovator?
Or is he a narcissist who enjoys life, and who has been
made a scapegoat of the copyright battle?
Dif?cult to say, but at
least he is an absolutely entertaining public relations
man.
Kim gives the impression
that he has nothing to hide.
For example, we get to follow
the board meeting of his new
company, Mega.
And yes, he feels remorse.
When we meet Kim on the
second day, he is obviously
sorry and embarrassed.
In fact he stood us up for a
second time.
We waited at a music studio in the centre of Auckland,
where Kim was supposed to
arrive to ?nish his pop record at seven in the evening.
At midnight a message appeared saying he would not
arrive at all. Kim had had enough of the
prison, the media and Germany. Kim says
apologetically.
?I?m afraid that you are
offended, and your story will
be murderous.?
Looking
back to Finland
Kim Dotcom?s life has been
remarkable, but fortunately
there is one thing that there
is no copyright controversy
about: his childhood memories of Finland.
Kim has relatives in Finland and also a big sister and
a big brother from his mother?s previous marriage. According to
Kim, the Thai prison was a ?hell
hole?. Kim broke his hand badly, but was miraculously saved.
?It changed everything.
At the time, I decided that I
would achieve all my dreams
before I turned 30. became a media
circus already on the plane.
After landing at the Munich
airport, he stated he was ?His
Royal Highness, Kimble I?.
The King was placed in custody for almost six months.
Kim still holds strongly that he did not do anything wrong. The
family is extensive, as Kim?s
mother has six brothers and
sisters.
Kim says he always loved
Nokia phones. I just
wanted to say: this is unfair.?
The prosecutor took that to
mean that Kim did not want
to go back to help investigate
the matter, and sought an arrest warrant. PEOPLE

It is worth recalling that

Kim remembers summers

?I don?t think apartheid has
ended,. 18
12 . as possible.
Perhaps the biggest impact that Mandela?s vision
has had on whites, said Hanratty, is that they are no longer ostracised by the world,
particularly in Africa.
?You can be a white South
African and can go all the
way to Cairo without being
considered a pariah,. We know
what is possible. When
Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990,
he brought a vision of forgiveness and reconciliation
to rebuild a nation marred by
the legacy of white rule. Under apartheid,
blacks and other non-whites
were racially separated in
every manner possible: education, hospitals, public transport, even beaches.
They were forcibly removed
from homes, denied citizenship or a vote; any dissent
was violently suppressed by
the state. Hanratty said. Unemployment remains at nearly 25
percent; white people on average earn six times more
than their black counterparts. Today, the party
and its leadership are facing
allegations of corruption and
of ignoring the needs of impoverished blacks, the very
constituency that Mandela fought so long and hard to
emancipate and empower.
?We have pockets of individuals, institutions and
groups who are pushing
Mandela?s ideals,. Chapedi said. Education and health
care for impoverished blacks
remain poor. It is a nation
where the economy is still
largely controlled by whites
and a relatively small group
of black elites.
Disillusion setting in
It is also a nation where
there?s gradual but growing disillusionment with the
ruling African National Congress (ANC), the party that
Mandela helped create and
nurture into the revolutionary force that dismantled
apartheid. Instead of nationalising companies, he persuaded the
ANC to move away from its
socialist ethos and embrace
a free and open economy,
which fueled South Africa?s
economic growth for years.
Today, however, that legacy is under ?re. They
don?t want white ?ight. For the white tour operator, Mandela?s vision for
South Africa had been partially realised.
?There have been successes, and there have been failures,. Not many
leaders in Africa can set that
kind of example.?. South
Africa, diplomatically and
JOHANNESBURG
militarily, is playing a leading
role in efforts to defuse crises
in Congo, the Central African
Republic and other trouble
spots on the continent.
But at home, the record remains mixed, a place
where Mandela?s hopes and
dreams remain largely unful?lled. His
death has left a real gap, and
the current leadership is not
up to ?lling this gap.?
When he became South
Africa?s ?rst black president
after winning the nation?s
?rst multi-race elections
in 1994, Mandela actively
wooed foreign investors. ?You can show
your passport with pride.
South Africans can play
sport anywhere in the world.
This helps our national identity very much.?
Despite all the challenges South Africa faces upon
Mandela?s death, many South
Africans expressed gratitude
that they were led by a man
who by example showed how
leaders should govern their
nation, imbued with the principles of democracy, justice
and equality.
?He was our [George]
Washington,. He criticised Zuma?s
leadership, saying that he
?does not even come close to
Mandela. The
feeling of guilt is still there
of having bene?ted from
the misfortune of our black
brothers, but it is less than it
used to be.?
He added that whites like
him ?still live in a very privileged position,. 18 DECEMBER 2013

South Africa still faces challenges after Mandela?s death, but its people are grateful to him for setting an example of the way their country should be governed.
South Africa still struggling to

The recent death of Madela has shone the spolight on the manner in which the country he
so valiantly fought for has progressed in recent years.

. ?But there has also been
backsliding among the ANC
leaders in espousing Mandela?s hopes and dreams. The
ANC responded by charging
the striking miners with the
murders of their co-workers,
triggering popular anger at
the storied party.
Politically,
allegations
of corruption have touched
the highest levels of of?ce ?
something that would have
been unthinkable under Mandela?s single term in of?ce.
President Jacob Zuma is facing a government probe for
allegedly spending about 20
million dollars of state funds
to renovate his luxurious private residence in KwaZulu
Natal province. There is a lot of
corruption; there?s propaganda. Hanratty said. ?I still
feel there is racism although
it was not as much as apartheid. I would like to see
change.?
Patrick Hanratty, 64, had
brought some Italian tourists
to look at where Mandela had
lived. It was the deadliest action by police in postapartheid South Africa. But the whites
always have money and they
get a lot more chances than
blacks.?
Papallo Chapedi, 15, said
his mother had been waiting
more than 10 years for government-subsidised housing,
while some of his friends. ?We are
living in a society that has a
measure of justice, whereas before we were living in
a very unjust society. ?To do
that would endanger the development of the country.
The government is following
a pragmatic approach. According to World Bank statistics, South Africa remains
one of the world?s most economically unequal societies.
The most violent upheaval came in August 2012, when
police killed 34 mine work-
ers waging a strike at a platinum mine in the town of
Marikana. ?In
his personal and public life,
he created a gold standard
and way of governing that
showed us how our leaders
should govern... he said. While some
progress has been made, the
majority of blacks live in poverty, and many still lack basic
necessities such as electricity, proper housing and clean
water. relatives were able to get housing due to their ties to the
ANC. In 2009, charges that he allegedly took bribes from arms
dealers were dropped, paving
the way for his presidency.
Situation in Soweto
In the famed township of
Soweto, on Vilakazi Street
where Mandela once lived,
youths protested and fought
the apartheid regime in the
1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Today, many young people here
express concern about their
future in a post-Mandela
South Africa.
?Madiba wanted us to
have peace and no racism,. The whites are still at
the top, and we blacks are
stuck down at the middle.?
?Poor people are going to become poorer and
the rich will get richer because of what?s happening,?
said Belle?s classmate, Thato
Tshabale, 15, who was standing next to her. he said. said William Gumede, a political analyst. South African companies have expanded across sub-Saharan Africa
and are a vital economic engine for the continent. In 2006, he
was acquitted of rape charges. Today, all South Africans are considered equal
under the constitution.
The nation, thanks in
large part to Mandela, is no
longer an international pariah but participates freely in
the global economy, sports
and other arenas. The ANC youth?s wing
has lobbied hard for the nationalisation of banks and
mines; according to the Municipal IQ, a Johannesburgbased research group, last
year there were a record 173
protests, many of them violent, over a lack of housing,
jobs and basic services. said Isaac, 14, a middle
school student, using Mandela?s clan name, as many people in South Africa do. ?Right now,
in order for us to learn, we
need money. South Africa is a nation
where racial and economic
inequalities still tear through
the consciousness of the
black majority. but he said
this was also partly because
the government was being careful not to alienate
whites.
?You can?t dismantle an
economy and make everybody equal,. They
want to keep as many skills
and as much capital in the
country. in terms of what
he has provided to South
Africans.
?I feel a huge animosity towards the ANC,. said Gumede, the political analyst. But
the South Africa he leaves
behind is still a work in progress, far from living up to
the promises ushered in by
his freedom and the ideals of
justice and equality that he
espoused.
South Africa has made
tremendous strides since
the end of apartheid, the
brutal system of white rule
that gripped the country for

K ATJA MARTELIUS . A few years

have given me.
What should be done?
Over 40 per cent of people in
this country live alone. They
never told me to stop doing
what I felt was important. Scott originally became involved with Finnish
Rugby at the turn of the millennium and after being driven to expand the reputation
of the sport in Finland, decided that it was time to push the
limits and do something that
had never been done before.
Past and present
The concept soon evolved into an event that would not
only promote and give recognition to the game of rugby in
Finland, but start to put Finland and Arctic Rugby on the
map of international Rugby
Federations worldwide.
What soon followed was
the birth of an extreme, innovative and unique international event, which captured
the interest of media and
rugby fans across the world.
Arctic Rugby was to become
the ?rst and only rugby tournament played on a snow
pitch 250km north of the
Arctic Circle.
The tournament was endorsed by FRF/SRL (Finnish
Rugby Federation/Suomen
Rugby Liitto) and events
were planned and organised
by committee members along
with the help of the Helsinki
Warriors Rugby Club. Everyone needs other people, and Finland desperately needs a sense of
community.

12 . Now the time has come
for Arctic Rugby to be reborn
and carry on its legacy.?
In 2010 the tournament
was put on hold until AussieBar International, who have
also supported the growth and
development of Finnish Rugby since their foundation in
June 2006, took over management of the event from Scott.
The bar immediately became
involved in the avid support
of Finnish Rugby and have set
about re-structuring and planning what promises to be an
even bigger, more successful
tournament in 2014.
?Already being a major
sponsor of both the Finnish
International Rugby Team,
as well as the sport in general here in Finland, it just
seemed like a great idea to
get involved. It was a special moment.

the scenic Gold Diggers Bar

where guests will get to enjoy live music by the famous
Mikko Sipola (winner of

venue, format, media and activities we were able to create
a fun, unique, extreme, innovative, international tournament. was the brainchild of
Australian expat, local businessman and Aussiebar coowner, Scott Fraser way back
in 2003. ?We hope to see
up to 30 teams playing side by
side on two ?elds, within the
next couple of years,. I said
no, I won?t do it. But when the
local Social Democratic group
asked, I said yes. The event also attracted
press coverage from all over
the world including IRB?s Total Rugby, Transworld Sport,
BBC Sport, English Rugby
Magazine, Australia?s Inside
Rugby Journal as well as other
websites, newspapers and radio stations from around the
world.
?I was very proud of what
we accomplished and also that the tournament ran
successfully for six consecutive years, from the inaugural event in 2004 through to
2009,. In addition, as part
of his nursing studies, Prabhakaran is currently doing
his on-the-job training at the

A boldly immersive

A N N H O R N A DAY
W A S H I N G T O N P O S T- B L O O M B E R G
ONCE in a while a movie
comes along that doesn?t just
affect how you think or feel,
it performs its own kind of
physical alchemy, burrowing
its way into your consciousness so thoroughly that you
feel permanently marked and
changed.
Blue Is the Warmest Colour, Abdellatif Kechiche?s
long, sprawling, boldly immersive coming-of-age drama, works just this sort of
magic. character, also named
Adele, Kechiche hews to the
time-honored French tradition of dressed-down, realistic staging and style, devoting
long, seemingly spontaneous
sequences set at Adele?s high
school and at home with her
working-class parents.
Those unforced, quotidien rhythms don?t perceptibly change once Adele meets
Emma (Lea Seydoux), a
fresh-faced, blue-haired art
student she ?rst glimpses on
a crowded street, then pursues into a lesbian nightclub.
The two women fall into a
rapturous, physically electric
affair, with Adele at ?rst bewildered and ?nally beguiled
by Emma?s assured delivery
of a sentimental education.

The high point of that tutorial is the prolonged, intimate sex scene that this
year made Blue Is the Warmest Colour the talk of Cannes,
where it won the festival?s
top awards (shared by the director and his two fearless
leading ladies). Blue Is the Warmest Colour at ?rst seems like
nothing new: Portraying the
day-to-day life of Exarchopoulos. Debate immediately ensued around whether Kechiche was perpetuating
an exploitative heterosexual male gaze or claiming new
space for representing gay
desire on screen. Following it up with
a massive global jaunt, the
band touches down on Sunday 15 December at Hartwall
