Dreaming of exanthropism
Michael Levi was part of an appointed Expert Group

I obviously had to relearn the different sounds, but to hear the birds singing all

thought, Europe assimilated also this.
But. I contacted the hospital on Monday, went for a check on Tuesday

In two weeks again all went well, and within four weeks it was switched on. The European citizens were too good to

ONLY 46 per cent of people

Finnish Centre for Pensions.
An employee?s position
at work makes a big difference to whether a person is
likely to remain at work until retirement age or to be unemployed or take disability
pension before becoming eligible for old-age pension.
In 2011, only 39 per cent
of employees in non-managerial positions remained in
the workforce until retirement age compared with 69
per cent of those belonging
to professional or managerial staff.
Among the staff in less
senior duties, one in third

Employees who worked
until full retirement age also had longer careers behind
them, particularly employees who took part-time
retirement.
Employees who retired

ten years shorter working careers than people who
worked until qualifying for
old-age pension.

THE ECONOMY is showing

The economic outlook of
small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has, according to a
recent survey, brightened to
the extent that 33 per cent
of SMEs currently expect the
economic situation to improve this year, while 17 per
cent expect it to deteriorate.
In the previous survey, only one in ?ve SMEs expressed
their con?dence in an imminent economic recovery.

service sectors are optimistic about the future. Marimekko is now
looking for a new Creative Director, which is good
news. said Helle in a
press release by STTK.
Helle says that the study
by the Finnish Centre for

workers and both sexes must
be treated equally when ?nalising the pension reform.
Akava, the Confederation of Unions for Professional and Managerial Staff,
also states that the only way
to increase the retirement
age is to improve well-being
at work.
Pekka Piispanen, director of Akava, says that the
pension reform must address
the root causes behind the
high number of people collecting disability pensions.
?The best way to decrease
socio-economic differences
is to ensure that people carry
on working until older. Between December and January, representatives from 4,399 SMEs
responded to the survey conducted by the market research ?rm Taloustutkimus.
In addition, the barometer shows that the decline in
investments is set to halt, although SMEs maintain a cautious approach to investments.
The situation is particularly auspicious in the manufacturing sector, where 26 per

they will increase their investments and 24 per cent that
they will slash investments.

WEIGHT ?uctuation seems to
correlate with a clear weekly rhythm, a recent Finnish
study reveals.
A study by VTT Technical Research Centre Finland,
Cornell University and Tampere University of Technology revealed that weight is at
its highest after the weekend and decreases during the
week.
The difference was noted when examining three
groups of people who had either gained, maintained or
lost weight. says
Pääkkönen, sipping his
coffee.
Significant CV
During his almost 30 years
with the National Theatre,
Pääkkönen has appeared
in around 60 plays, including Kristian Smeds. The study that
comprised 80 people indicated that weight was at its
highest on Sunday and Mon-
day, regardless of the group.
Among those who had maintained or lost weight, it immediately began to decrease
after Tuesday and continued
until Friday.
Those who had gained
weight experienced more irregular weight ?uctuation on
different days of the week.
Researchers have deduced that those who have
lost weight are able to compensate a slight weight gain
on weekends better during the week than those
who have tendency to gain
weight.
Researcher at VTT AnnaLeena Orsaman considers
weight gain after the weekend a part of normal weight
?uctuation. In the hotel lobby,

Exercising

Keeping a handle on

A N N A K A I S A M Ä N T TÄ R I . The

prevent the original versions
of pictures from deteriorating
or being lost.
The JPS manages and
maintains about 25,000 negatives at the branch. A weakened oxygen intake results in lactic acid in
muscles, which in turn may
lead to reduced energy.
Those with coronary
heart diseases should favour
indoor exercise, because the
chest becomes cold outdoors
in freezing weather. What adverse effects may
exercise in the cold have?
Freezing temperatures constrict veins, which is why
exercising in the cold puts a
greater strain on the circulatory system than regular
exercise. Outdoor trousers are worn on
top of them.
In very cold temperature
woolen mittens can be worn
on top of gloves.
3. Cotton or
wool may be placed on top of
it. If the
lungs are particularly receptive to the cold, protective gear for breathing may
be used at all times outside.
People with asthma should
monitor their breathing. How can one exercise in
the freezing cold?
With the right gear and no
diseases, such as asthma or
artery diseases, an experienced jogger may continue
to run outside despite freezing temperatures. Should the skin be protected with lotions?
Lotion may be applied to
the nose and cheeks, but it
should not contain any water
or it will freeze on the face.
Waterless lotions include
Vaseline, for example.
6. The Achilles
tendon becomes easily infected in the cold, and it can
be protected with leg warmers. This may
constrict the arteries and increase the risk of a lack of oxygen to the heart.

Morgan O?Hara, right, checks her mother?s negatives at the Sagamihara branch of Japan?s National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art on 23 January. Does exercising in freezing weather consume more
energy?
No. Should exercise be tailored according to weather?
In freezing weather the ?rst
?ve or ten minutes are the
worst, until the body heats
up. Cold
air constricts the airway,
which may result in stuf?ness. H T
1. Can a person with asthma or a coronary heart disease exercise in freezing

With more than ten degrees
below zero people with asthma should use protective
cells for breathing. However, Morgan offered the negatives to the
Japan Professional Photographers Society (JPS) via an acquaintance, as she hoped the
pictures would be viewed by
Japanese people rather than
remain in her possession.

Elizabeth reportedly said
she was surprised because
Japanese people had casually responded to her requests
to take their pictures. Muscles warm
the system when jogging in
freezing temperatures, and
the pulse does not usually deviate from normal. This leads to
frostbite.
7. What is the right kind of
gear for exercising in freezing temperatures?
With a temperature ten degrees below zero or more,
one should use a warming
cell or woolen scarf to protect breathing. Temperature does signi?cantly affect pulse or
recovery.

THERE?S a trend in movies
this awards season, apart
from the welcome abundance of awards-contenders
with an African-American ?
or simply African . well, let?s leave some
things to the imagination.
Luttrell?s comrades-inarms are played by Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Taylor
Kitsch, each of whom is barely recognisable behind the
scruffy beards, grime and
blood that cover their faces.
Inexplicably, they wear no
helmets.
Is it hard to watch. . well, it?s never quite clear
what. The questions of who
exactly Shah is, other than one
of many murderous thugs, and
why we should care so deeply
about his fate, is never really
explained in a way that grabs
the imagination.
He?s no Osama bin Laden,
in other words, and this is no
Zero Dark Thirty (2012). Even
worse, Berg gives us little
reason to feel that we know
the men who are hunting
him, beyond a few lame lines
of dialogue about someone?s
upcoming wedding. Signing with
a big label was the next thing to
check off her list, doing so the
same year and going on to release her debut full-length Vatten och bröd (Water and Bread).

who is played by producer Mark Wahlberg, the ?lm
tells the story of Operation

Lastenklinikka children?s hospital. 09 471 87383; Vantaa: Peijas hospital, Sairaalakatu 1, tel. Harry is
famous for his storytelling as well as
his suits, but this time Harry?s yarns
will give Osnard his comeuppance.
Set against the controversy of the
Panama Canal after its successful
handover from America to Panama
in late 1999, the film twists from
drama to farce as Harry?s stories
spin out of control and inadvertently set off a chain of events that
threatens Panama and everything
he values in life. Helsinki?s General Post Office is also open at the weekend 10-18. See www.forex.fi for more

It?s a beautiful city with stunning views of the castle from

After Dark
Want to know if you should compliment
your girlfriend on being plösö or paksuna?
Sick of not knowing your Kossu from your
skumppa?
Not sure whether to käydä vieraissa or to
käydä vierailulla?
Finnish After Dark is here to help, with everything from cool slang
to chat up lines, tips on how to avoid being beaten up in taxi
queues and the latest excuses for why you are late for work.
Finnish After Dark is a humoristic look at various Finnish-language terms and phrases that are almost impossible to translate.
These are the spices of late night conversation among Finns,
which are almost always missed by foreigners.
The book is based on the Finnish After Dark series published in
SixDegrees over the past few years. But after an extended time there it?s easy to take
for granted the beauty as you
walk along wondering what
you are going to make for dinner or what bills need to be
paid.
Arriving here in winter
was a slap in the face, and
in hindsight, perhaps some
kind of twisted blessing, as it
immediately showed another side to this country. It was
during this time that I set
about establishing my new
life without the distraction
of a glorious summer and all
its (welcome) trappings.
A work colleague from my
early days here said, ?There?s
only one thing in Finland
colder than the weather and
that?s the Finns?. With our time in the UK
coming to an end, I decided to
join my wife on her return to
Finland since I viewed living
in this country with heavily
rose-tinted glasses after my
two summer holidays here.
I arrived in winter.
It was November and the
place was already caked in
snow. The Finnish have a reputation for being socially cold but like any

portrayal of a country and its
people, it?s a generalisation.
Extroverts though, are de?nitely in the minority.
Those ?rst few months
here were quite tough, particularly socially. Even the very
common practise for supermarket checkout assistants
to ask ?How?s your day going?. After three
more months of what was
a tough winter by anyone?s
standards, I was asking myself, ?What the hell have I
done!??
Day to day living in any
country is most likely to give
a different perspective to just
being somewhere for a holi-
day. was very alien to me! I
had left Australia in 1997, so
had been away for a while,
but it felt very weird to be a
stranger in my own country.
After having moved back
to Finland from our temporary relocation, I began to
identify with certain traits of
the Finns that had bothered
me greatly before. Soon after my arrival followed about three brutal weeks of -26 degrees or
thereabouts. We
stayed there for nearly two
years and I de?nitely learned
some things about myself
that I hadn?t realised before.
Australians (generally)
think nothing of striking up
a conversation with a stranger in a public place or even
just giving someone a smile
and saying ?Hi. The mistake that I made, and
probably many foreigners
in the same situation as me,
was that I took the Finns apprehension to make contact
as being rude and standoffish, whereas I realised further in time that they simply
are not ones for small talk
and can be terribly shy.
I had the opportunity to
move back to my native Australia a couple of years ago
with my wife and two kids
whilst she was on maternity
leave with our youngest. Hundreds of customers visit our facility in Helsinki each month to receive holistic treatment and relaxing massage.

EXPAT VIEW
Mark Fletcher lives in Arabia, Helsinki. (I am
originally from Australia.)
It was in Edinburgh that I
met my future Finnish wife
with whom I visited Finland
for a couple of fantastic summer holidays of drinking,
summer cottages and sauna. Here
in Finland, if a stranger talks
to you at a bus stop, they are
most likely either drunk or a
bit loopy.
Talking to strangers in
Australia did not come easy
to me and if someone were
to start talking to me at a
bus stop, I would do my best
to step far enough out of
earshot but close enough to
run back in time for the approaching bus. Success of the largest chain
