FINNISH helicopter company Copterline has suffered a major loss in
its legal battle against the US-based
helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky
for compensation over a helicopter crash in the Baltic Sea in August
2005.
The chopper was on a routine
?ight from Tallinn to Helsinki and
crashed three minutes after its
take-off, killing 14 people, including
the two pilots. This creates challenges for both the government to
?x the issue and to people struck by
unemployment as they try to keep
up with life, even without a job.
Since 2002, one method the Ministry of Labour has had to enhance
work rates and to ease job-hunting
for new graduates is a programme
called preparation for working life.

In Kazakhstan, we pay special attention to the education of our next generation.
For example, the President?s

young talents, is functioning
successfully in the country.
As we know, this year Finland rightly took the ?rst

a joint programme between

At the time being in Kazakhstan we pay much
attention to education of application engineers (literally

and innovative programmes.
Finnish engineering education is admittedly one of the
front ranks; therefore we are
willing to establish cooperation between the two technical universities.
The embassy of Kazakhstan has decided to contribute to the expansion of
cultural and humanitarian
collaboration.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite the readers of Helsinki Times to the

This time we decided to show

Galymzhan Koishybayev, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to
Finland, has Masters in Philosophy from Moscow State University. Undoubtedly,
the Independence Day for us
is not simply a holiday; it is
also a time to sum up our long
journey. However, the development of economic collaboration does not correspond
with the high pace of the political dialogue. For the last two decades, our country has gone
from a backward state with
a lot of social-economic problems, left as a legacy of the
Soviet Union, to a developed
country, currently playing a
leading role in Central Asia.
The ?rst ten years of our
independence were dedicated to systematic changes,
which established the basis
for a free market economy
and open civic society. The
high-ranking of?cials discussed prospects for trade
and economic collaboration
development. During the meetings
with representatives of Finnish companies, operating in
our region, I felt the exceedingly high interest of local
entrepreneurs in the development of close ties with
Kazakhstan.
One of our strategic goals
is to develop cooperation in
the sphere of energy-ef?cient and green technologies.
We also take into account
the deliberate strategy of Kazakhstan in its transition to
?green economy?, which encourages energy and water
conservation and the broader
use of nature-friendly technologies. He is also Kazakhstan?s ambassador to Estonia, and

Unemployed
The unemployment rate in

consider the misuse as a
problem: ?We listen to our
customers very carefully and
whenever we hear of misuse,
such as bad working hours
or duties that don?t belong to

on boycott and don?t send any

However, according to
the bill itself, some unemployed people have seen the
programme as a forced middle stage before the fulltime work, instead of gaining

There have also been some
accusations that employers

that the main worries of union members included the
loss of jobs and income, labour market changes and
the weakening of the welfare
state.
As demonstrated in last
November?s
negotiations,
unions seek to maintain the
standard of living for employees, which at minimum
would include cost-of-living
increases in wages. In the labour market, the main focus

Unions
protect members
Employee groups are attempting to protect their
members in an era of recession and redundancies. One way or another, prices
suddenly collapse causing all sorts of shockwaves
through economies. After decades of being a proud net
exporter, Finland now has a
large trade de?cit. A key point in labour negotiations, he said, is
to restore lost competitiveness. SAK?s website published a host of union
members. I?ll run through some of the most common and
give my opinion.
1) CURRENCY COLLAPSE. There is one exception, though: when it comes to ?nancial apocalypses, many people seem to think these scenarios could
happen. They also
want bene?ts to improve the
quality of life, including maternity and paternity leaves.
One signi?cant change in
the economy is for employers to use more temporary
and part-time workers. Since the onset of
the ?nancial crisis, Finland?s
labour costs have increased
15 per cent, more than double
than Eurozone average.
Some economists, including Princeton?s Nobel
Prize winner Paul Krugman,
blame increases in labour
costs and a decline in com-
petitiveness as some of the
main reasons for Southern
Europe?s woes.
Finland?s relative loss

?Wages and salaries can be
increased only at the enterprise level, if the productivity development of the
company permits. If one
fails, it will cause a chain reaction, the economy will
implode and we?ll all be cannibals within a few weeks.
Or so goes the theory. There are valid reasons to be
wary of this, but the ?nancial crisis has caused us to
be more careful. Under this scenario, a major currency suddenly loses the trust of its people
and becomes next-to-worthless. Business
and employee groups are manoeuvring against each other on how best to help the
economy and promote their
interests.
At the core of the problems facing employers is the
declining competitiveness
of the Finnish economy. Furthermore, the declining competitiveness is appearing on
dismal income statements:
according to the Ministry
of Finance, corporate profits during 2013 will still be
almost a third below 2008

HUMANITY is fascinated by apocalyptic scenarios.
Whether it is by the hand of man (nuclear war), the
hand of God (Judgement Day) or bad luck (asteroid impact), we seem to love discussing global catastrophes.
The latest prediction for the end of the world is something about Mayans and 2012.
INTERESTINGLY,
it seems the vast majority of people
don?t actually believe the end of the world is coming,
but like to talk about it all the same. Here at home, consumer
con?dence has deteriorated signi?cantly. said Antti Palola,

Many
Swedish-speaking communities can also be

has become a festival of shallow consumption and scraping together super?uous junk
instead of a festival of charity and caring for another.
Still, for some people, ethics

The traditional St. Yle news reported in early November that
several trucks from Kuhmo
left for Christmas markets in
Hannover, Leipzig and Stuttgart. Thomas Christmas Market was held in the
Senate Square a year ago for
the ?rst time, as previously its usual location was the
Esplanade. For example, secondhand clothing and organic, local and fair trade food,
alongside other ethically produced goods, have become a
trend.
Unfortunately, Christmas
in particular is quite the op-
ETHICAL

enjoy the atmosphere and
take home whatever catches
their eye. The term describes a
situation where a large group
of Swedish-speaking Finns
have moved into a dominantly Finnish-speaking area,
and formed a sort of sub-society within the society.
There the Swedishspeakers have organised
themselves, with Swedishspeaking schools and other
social institutions. The Christmas atmosphere alone is something
to look forward to.
THERE are around 300,000
Swedish-speaking Finns living in Finland along a narrow coastal line, between the
more bilingual south-southwest coast and the more
dominantly Swedish-speaking area of Ostrobothnia on
the west coast.
But what they lack in

with the new location for the
market, it seems it has established itself on the grand
spot in front of the Helsinki

Christmas markets are a
tradition all around Finland,
and places such as Porvoo
are especially popular dur-
ing Christmas time. But quite to the contrary, in many parts of Swedish-speaking Finland, the
different dialects are turning
out to be quite viable.
None more so than the one
found in Ostrobothnia, which
hosts many of the few municipalities in Finland that are
almost completely Swedishspeaking. The dialect spoken
there differs substantially
from Standard Swedish, and
it?s the many characteristics
from ancient Swedish blended in with modern Swedish
that gives it its unique sound.
Then there is the autonomous Swedish-speaking archipelago of Åland situated
between mainland Finland
and Sweden, with a dialect
that resembles more the ones
found in Sweden rather than
Finland. Also, some churches in
the Helsinki metropolitan
area collect presents for the
children of disadvantaged
families in the area. Finnish market products are also a
common feature in Christmas
markets outside Finland, such
as in Germany. 19 DECEMBER 2012

those who are worried about

a sensitive area, as the ethnicity of Ålanders has been

The idea of ethical presents is to give a gift with a

Finland has become the

Developed by Agrifood
Research MTT (Maa- ja

companies and to help
consumers make environmentally-conscious food
choices. Nokka?s head chef Ari

supporter of local foods
and the critics appreciate
the fact that the source of
all the raw ingredients is
known.
In second place, the
critics chose restaurant
Olo, which is situated in

In third place was Thai

which is situated in Kolmas Linja, and whose

Situated by the beautiful
Töölönlahti bay, this is a good
place to get some light therapy on a sunny winter day, as
windows, surrounding the
restaurant, overlook to the
park. This is because most
Finns only think of boring
porridge and bread when
they think of oats. These
include foods such as milk,
cream, uncured cheese,
fresh meat and ?sh. Make a separate order
for lute?sk, admire the wobbly piece of head cheese, enjoy green peas with a slice
of ham, and the best for the
least, the abundant selection

Food Expiry
Dates: Overrated
or not?
Expiry dates are usually
given to foodstuffs that
have a tendency to go bad
or become contaminated
after a certain time. Chocolate cake and
cherry jelly are delights for
both children and adults.
There is a children playground area in the restaurant, which should buy a bit
of time for adults to enjoy
their meal. The Italian-American Carlito?s, located in the
Glo Hotel in Sello, serves Italian in?uenced dishes in their
Christmas Lunch Buffet. Still, the melodies and music continue
their occasional dance on the
walls of Finlandia Hall during the Christmas concerts in
December.
For music and food lovers, Finlandia serves the traditional Finnish Christmas
Buffet during lunch and dinner. The critics praise Nokka on its food offerings
such as the marinated
and broiled roach and its
unique location and décor.
Located at Katajanokka,
in an old brick warehouse,
the critics say that the
authentic brick walls instill a sense of safety and
warmth, while the location is a pleasant change
from the busy city center. And if you happen to
love countryside inspired
Christmas meal, look no further and step into the Töölönranta ravintola. Under 4-year-olds free,

just a short ride on
a regional train to reach Kerava, a small town only thirty
kilometres away from Helsinki and home of the yearly garlic festival, taking place on the
third weekend of August.
This very unique one-day
event ?lls the town with the
strong, distinctive scent of
fresh garlic which, in turn,
sparks everyone?s culinary
creativity to produce even
the most astonishing and unconventional taste combinations: garlic can be found, for
instance, in cold beverages
and desserts alike!
This lively event was established during the second
half of the 80s thanks to the
initiative of Yrjö Ahomaa,
then-mayor of the Kerava

13 . Undoubtedly
a garlic enthusiast, he is also the father of Kerava?s regional specialty bearing his
name: lammasta Yrjön tapaan in Finnish, freely translated to English as ?lamb à la
Yrjö?.
Unsurprisingly, this dish
contains garlic, its ?premiere?
taking place at the national
traditional food day exactly
twenty-six years from today,
on the 13 December, 1986.
Believing in the existence of
vampires hardly could have
been the driving force of Yrjö
Ahomaa?s love for garlic and
the consequent establishment of the garlic festival.
Rather than superstitious,
Ahomaa was probably aware
of the bene?cial health effect
of garlic, nowadays supported by the ?ndings of numerous scienti?c studies.
Based on this, lamb à la
Yrjö is indeed a very healthy
option! Its preparation actually involves an abundant amount of garlic cloves,
peeled and placed into cavities carved into lamb steak
with a pointed knife. B L O G S P O T

steak is then rubbed with a
mixture of salt and oregano,
covered in meat stock and
eventually left to cook in the
oven for several hours. Of course, the
garlicky ensemble could not
have been complete without
garlic potatoes, a very appropriate accompaniment.
Needless to say, lamb à
la Yrjö easily wins the heart
of even the most demanding
garlic lover!

Helsinki Times. As a tribute to Finnish culture and way of life,
in Grave?s Snow Queen the story is set in the early twentieth century Finland, carrying the main characters of the story, Kerttu and Kai, on a journey from Helsinki through foreign lands to Lapland.
The magical winter wonderland of the ballet is created by costume designer Erika Turunen, make-up artist Pekka Helynen and lightning designer Mikki Kunttu together with the choreographer. The movielike score with several special effects was recorded by the Finnish National
Opera orchestra and is heard in playback during the performance, allowing
more space for the performers to move over the orchestra pit.
With its impressive visual world, The Snow Queen enchants audiences of all ages, both children and adults. Andersen from 1845. 18

Banks and Bureaux de Change. Undoubtedly, Finland
has had a lot to offer me,
from environmental to social and cultural phenomena, somewhat dissimilar to
my ex-experiences with both
privileges and drawbacks.
I suppose that the most
substantial point is to make
friends. Fortunately, I have
been able to make friends
with people from various
nationalities who have a
lot in common with me and
shared interests. Similar to other
newcomers, my life in Finland started with dif?culties
in ?nding accommodation,
dealing with bureaucratic
system and understanding
directions.
But, everything has gotten better since I started to
get to know Helsinki better
and became accustomed to
the situation of a new life.
Further, once time passes and when I memorise the
challenges, they seem to me
as experiences rather than
dif?culties, and I feel the necessity for such experiences. The currency exchange counter at the harbour

HELSINKI . Certainly, there is an opportunity to
study Finnish language at the
university without any expense. Banks are usually open Mon-Fri
9:15-16:15 except for the bank at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, which
is open 6-22 daily. a country that most people have
talked about in terms of its
cold, long nights and high
possibility of depression ?
might seem quite dif?cult if
one comes from the Middle
East. Most grocery stores are open Mon-Fri 7-21, Sat
7-18 and Sun 12-21. But, I
think it is a normal circumstance when one moves to a
foreign country and does not
know the language. Therefore,
In this series expatriates write about their lives in Finland.
the snowy, long days could
get warm by getting together with friends and having
coffee or tea while chatting.
One could also swim in an icy
lake, go to sauna and drink
beer. Long bright days of
summer could be exciting by
spending time by camping in
nature, swimming and sitting on the beach till late after midnight.
All these activities make
the times of loneliness more
tolerable, although since I
have been in Finland, I still
feel the lack of social activities in my life and I am frustrated with unemployment.
In my home country I had
much to do, I had a job and I
was busy with other social
and cultural activities. All with bathroom en suite.
Superb Tuscan foods and wines.
