Instant loans With loans available by text message from your phone and some incurring interest rates of several hundred per cent, authorities have continually tried to dampen the industry of instant loans, but it is still going strong. Both the new law and the new military technology deal are Finnish government initiatives, that occur regardless of a public petition calling for an immediate discontinuation of all forms of military trade and cooperation with Israel.
VOTERS in France and Greece have sent strong messages that their patience with fiscal austerity is ending. With no party holding more than 19 per cent of the seats in parliament, it may be difficult to form a governing coalition.

Reciprocally, Israel's private military sector will be granted the opportunity to participate in projects that require access to Finland's classified information. This puts considerable pressure on Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, who helped push through the fiscal compact with help from Nicolas Sarkozy. Anu-Tuija Lehto, an attorney for the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK), said this may not actually work in their favour. The agreement gives an opportunity to Finnish defence and security companies to take part in projects, the realisation of which requires access to Israel's classified information. MINISTER of Employment and the Economy Lauri Ihalainen (SDP) was prepared to hear that ethnic discrimination takes place in recruitment, but he was nonetheless surprised by its prevalence. She openly endorsed Sarkozy in the election and now will be forced to work with the man who defeated him. The law also reduces transparency of the FinnishIsraeli military trade by making secret some of the trade's details and, accordingly, hinders the prospects for public scrutiny. Ihalainen was presented on Monday 7 May with a report by University of Helsinki researchers on discrimination in Finnish working life. In Sweden the organising committee similarly re-

A HIGH percentage of children whose parents are divorced have little contact with their fathers. The vaccinations were provided by the British company GlaxoSmithKline. The children were improperly vaccinated as a result of their participation in a research project by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). Nevertheless, the Finns, in general, remain cautious toward immigration. Nokia, on the other hand, dropped to fifth. Girls, especially, feel the pressure to live up to expectations. Google ranked first, while Microsoft overhauled Nokia to claim the second place. The survey indicates that children in Kainuu are more at risk of being overweight than children in Turku. A recent survey by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) shows that children whose mothers have had no higher than vocational training are more likely to be overweight and to have dental cavities than children of mothers with higher education degrees.
According to THL's Chief Physician, Professor Tiina Laatikainen, the socioeconomic status of parents can be seen most clearly in the aspects of health that are decisively shaped by everyday habits: "These include obesity, poor dental care and use of intoxicants." Parents' income can also limit the kind of after-school activities, such as sports, they can afford for their children. She also notes that fathers can find it hard to care for small children alone. His radical reforms, which never allowed for lowering of quality, made the newspaper the largest in the Nordic countries and one of the most respected world-wide. to eat and how people around them live affects their health, independently of the kind of education their parents have had," Laatikainen says.
Finns' attitudes toward immigration moderated
The Finns' attitudes toward immigration have mitigated considerably, suggests a survey by the Finnish Business and Policy Forum, EVA. Rovio, meanwhile, emerged as the fourth most attractive employer of the IT field, indicate the results of a questionnaire taken by nearly 7,000 students. A survey by the National Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) shows that almost one in four children who live with their mothers do not see their fathers eve-
ry month. 43 per cent of the 1,300 respondents were unwilling to promote immigration to tackle the problems of population ageing. Lahti was murdered in 2006. The research project's safety monitoring has not received reports of adverse reactions from the parents of children who were excessively vaccinated.. The survey offers no explanation for the relative estrangement of fathers, but according to THL's Head of Research Tuovi HakulinenViitanen, it may be the result of the strain of divorce on the parents' relationship
and their use of the child as a pawn in their disputes. Such influences can be much more prominent among children whose parents are highly educated," Laatikainen ponders. "Illnesses are screened for in school health care and maternity clinics, and children have fairly equal access to health care." The likelihood of clinical depression is also not affected by area of residence or parental income or education. Children's well-being also depends to some extent on their area of residence. She was acquitted by the Court of Appeal last summer. In Laatikainen's view this is due to a well-functioning public health care system. HT

An aerial view of Meri-Rastila showing the elevated buildings where the Alternative Master Plan suggests development should take place the plan leaves the beautiful forest area in the foreground untouched.
Important issues Though experts in their field, the planning specialists noted that one of the most important issues for them would be that any plans for the area should involve the views, desires and concerns of the residents a viewpoint rarely, if ever, taken into consideration by the planning authorities in Finland. Optimising Helsinki's position as World Design Capital 2012, local activists and residents have put forward a highly-professional and innovative Alternative Master Plan for the area, one which will make city planners sit up and take notice.

every resident of Helsinki can rightly be proud of the city's status as World Design Capital 2012, it has been argued that such events are often elitist with regards to the hands-on involvement of the city's everyday citizens. Most worryingly for local residents KSV plans included levelling large swathes of the adjacent forest area used as a recreation area by local residents and people outside the area and using the land to build upmarket, owner-occupier housing. week's narrow vote by politicians against the proposal to bring a Guggenheim Museum of contemporary art to Helsinki's Katajanokka district may not be the last word on the issue, as the director of the Guggenheim Foundation in New York has vowed not to give up the fight. The plans were rejected last week on Wednesday 2 May by a political decision-making body by the narrowest of margins eight against and sev-
en for the proposal after the majority of Green politicians decided to oppose the plan. Meri-Rastila contains a particularly high number of residents from an immigrant background and the group felt from early in the developmental stage of Ourcity that it was crucial to build bridges between communities which may be isolated from each other even though are geographical neighbours. Laura Itävaara of Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau was not overly downbeat about the decision, pointing out Helsinki's other attractions. The plan also includes a long-term plan which shows that it is also possible to build over Vuotie and the metro line.
Depth of thinking The plan has been presented to KSV, whose chief Tuomas Rajajärvi was impressed with the scope of the designs and the depth of thinking that went into them. The urban planning body of Helsinki doesn't reflect the diL E H T I K U VA / M I K KO S T I G

Greek, French elections sound death knell for austerity
The voting out of conservative governments in France and Greece last weekend heralds the end of harsh European austerity programmes and ushers in an era of new economic investment and social policies aimed at restoring growth and employment across the continent.
severe austerity plan on the country, which deepened the five-year-long recession and ignited a steep increase of unemployment and poverty. During his speech immediately after the election, Hollande said that his triumph was seen across Europe "as a relief, a hope, the confirmation that austerity is not a call of fate" for the continent. For the past two years Germany and the EU, together with Sarkozy, have been pivotal in conceiving the austerity programmes imposed upon the governments in Greece, Italy, Portugal, Ireland and Spain. The Obama administration "should be telling the Bahraini government that time is short, and, if they don't act, there will be an escalation on the US side," said Tom Malinowski, the Washington director of Human Rights Watch (HRW), who was briefly detained by police at a demonstration during a visit to the Gulf kingdom last month. That's excellent news." In Spain, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, the leader of the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), called Hollande's triumph "a great hope, the beginning of a new era.". Malinowski's advice fell short of that of some Gulf specialists here, notably a former top Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) analyst for Near Eastern and South Asia. "Instead, its presence has arguably increased Iran's belligerence and given Sunni regimes, including Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the false impression that Washington has given them a licence to kill their own people," he added, noting that such a move would signal all regimes in the region that "Arab dictatorship will no longer be tolerated whether in Bahrain, Syria, Saudi Arabia, or elsewhere." Speaking at a forum sponsored by the Washingtonbased Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED) last week, Malinowski also urged Washington to signal its willingness to consider moving the Fifth Fleet out of Bahrain. "The military base is not sustainable as violence grows," he said. Leftist European parties across the board see all this as a welcome change. German chancellor Angela Merkel said last week that she now envisions "a growth amendment" for the austerity programmes that her government has consistently forced upon Europe for two years. Particularly Hollande's triumph in France is seen as the turning point in the current economic paradigm in the continent. During his victory speech, Hollande insisted that his government will focus on "social justice and restoring hope for the youth." France suffers from a 25 per cent youth unemployment rate; in Spain, youth unemployment affects almost 50 per cent of the population a predicament that affects other Mediterranean countries of the eurozone.

FRANCE, the Socialist presidential candidate François Hollande, a champion of government-led economic growth and employment strategies, accomplished a comfortable victory over the incumbent president Nicolas Sarkozy the man often seen as the poster child of the austerity programmes in practice all over Europe. They had also hoped that he and King Hamad, considered a "moderate" by the administration, could force through implementation of the key recommendations

Instead, Greek citizens cast their ballots with the Coalition of the Radical Left, which obtained 17 per cent of the votes, the Communist party (8.4 per cent), and yet another Leftist party (six per cent). Characterised by drastic cuts in public spending, pensions, social welfare programmes and salaries, these policies have so far only sharpened the economic crisis, prolonging recessions, worsening poverty and even increasing mortality rates among the elderly. According to Sigmar Gabriel, leader of the German Social Democratic Party, Hollande's triumph in France means, "Europe will take a new economic orientation, towards growth and employment. WHILE the administration of President Barack Obama has repeatedly called on the alKhalifa monarchy to follow through on reform recommendations made by an international commission last November, it has been reluctant to take stronger steps for fear of alienating Saudi Arabia, Bahrain's much larger neighbour, according to analysts here. The administration had hoped to bolster the crown prince's position in the immediate aftermath of the last year's Saudi-backed crackdown against the opposition by, among other things, arranging a high- profile White House meeting with Obama last June. Photographer-turned-clothing designer, Netta Kervinen, wishes that ethically and ecologically produced clothing will become the norm one day.. Ethical fashion means providing workers with fair hours, wages, rights, and a healthy work environment, along with ensuring that the process of getting the product from raw materials to the consumer has as little negative impact on the environment as possible. "In 2008 there was very little on offer in Finland, so in the beginning I started the shop so that we could have some nice ethically produced clothes up here." Initially, most of the brands sold were foreign. Apart from taking up a large proportion of agricultural land, cotton is the most pesticide-intensive crop in the world and thus considered also the dirtiest causing injuries and deaths yearly, with the herbicide chemicals remaining in the fabric for the entire lifetime of the garment. Although the materials come from abroad, the production takes place in Finland. Just to mention a few facts: the manufacturing of nylon releases nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas 310 times more potent than CO2. The manner in which the Ainokainen garments are produced differs greatly from its industrial equivalent. Raised in a family with strong ecological values and three older sisters who accumulated a heap of hand-medowns for her use, Kervinen's

Nurmi's dress combines the use of surplus fabric from the 90s and ecologically produced virgin material.
Old and new unite Although the collections of clothing designer Anniina Nurmi, 27, depend on the availability of recycled materials as well, she has chosen to combine their use with new sustainably-grown and ethically-manufactured fabric. "There is still some industrial production left here, although only in a small scale. "Sometimes there is enough material for several pieces," Kervinen adds. Both also require large amounts of energy for their production. This is much slower than industrial production, where the same cloth is used to make tens, or even hundreds of identical pieces of clothing," she says. Things get complicated if you want bigger lines made," she says, adding that nowadays it is mostly just small brands that have kept their manufacturing in Finland. At the moment she is also using organic cotton, which comes from Turkey and India. Her collection includes unique pieces of clothing and jewellery, all handmade by herself. "I first look at what the fabric is like, then hand-cut the pieces to form a 3D model with them on a mannequin. The production of polyester, anothK AI LINDQVIS T
er synthetic, requires large amounts of water for cooling, along with lubricants that pose a potential source of biohazardous waste. The colourful fabric my current collection has, had been sitting in the warehouse since the 90s!" Nurmi says. Clothes should not be as disposable as they've come to be," says Netta Kervinen, 28, the owner of the one-womanbusiness Ainokainen, which she started up three years ago. Most of the materials come from flea markets or are donated by people. "I like the idea of slowfashion luxury. The science behind today's clothing production provides a chilling read. Even natural fibres pose problems. There's little need to keep producing new collections all the time, when one could rather create variation with new colours and details," she says. Nurmi is, however, aware that designing new items for the market plays against the ideology of sustainability. Globalisation has enabled cheap mass production, which has changed the way we think about clothes: they have become disposable. Will small businesses bring ethics back into the trade?
J E N N I T O R I S E VA HEL SINKI TIMES
WITH garments costing the equivalent of two hours' wages for a waitress, many of us have taken the habit of buying items that we don't need, or, in the worst case, even use. Therefore, perhaps the best way to change things is to make the industry take more responsibility of its actions. cled fabric that is sufficient for the industrial-scale production of at least one single collection. And so far almost everything that I use is recycled," she says, adding that problems may come along if she is looking for something in particular. In Finland, the movement is still taking its first steps, and the niche is largely occupied by small businesses. Soon after, she added a web shop selling ethically produced clothes on the side. Although it is very difficult to calculate how much workers in clothing factories earn, it has been estimated that only around 0.55 per cent of the retail price goes to the workers' wages.
Most social responsibility programs of clothing companies require that their workers should be paid at least the national minimum wage. Coupled with intensive water and energy usage, bleaching, dyeing, and the treatments to make `crease resistant' fabrics, add to the chemical hazards that some cheaply produced clothes are coupled with.
The descent of ethical fashion Sometimes also called ecological clothing, this recent arrival in the fashion industry has enjoyed a clear increase in demand for ethically- and sustainably-produced garments. This means that there may only be enough fabric for a single piece of clothing. In 2008, while working at Luhta, one of Finland's biggest clothing companies, Nurmi, a Lahti Design Institute graduate, began writing about sustainable clothing in her blog Vihreät vaatteet (Green clothes). 12 10 17 MAY 2012 12 10 17 MAY 2012

"At the moment there is a lot of unused surplus fabric left from industry that has moved out of Finland, and you can find packs just lying around. However, in most countries the minimum wage has been set so low that it is often not sufficient even for the worker's basic necessities.
Chemical cocktails Every step in the garment's life cycle, from the growing of the raw materials, to its eventual disposal, comes with a carbon footprint. It is not the sewing that consumes most of her time, but rather the combination of finding the material and planning how to use it. Instead of creating entirely new collections for the changing seasons, most of her designs stay the same; it is only the fabric that changes, depending on the treasures she comes across at the flea market. "One could think that the most ecological option would be not to design anything new into this world, but realistically, the industry is not going to go away. The programme is booked for every Thursday night up till the end of June, mainly with younger local musicians playing exclusively mainstream acoustic-style jazz."It's got to be music that `gets between your toes'," he says, using a Savonian expression. Koko Jazz club's speciality is quality sound and Finnish jazz.. The aim is to learn the practical skills of how to build Hexayurts a common disaster relief shelter together and to construct one as a temporary sauna structure, but the organisers hope to get different Hexayurts implanted in as many different contexts as possible, and see various kinds of people join the talkoot to construct their own Hexayurts. Arrangements are similar in the new premises, now on the north side of Hakaniemi Market, tucked around the corner at Hämeentie 3, and with portraits of Finnish musicians along one wall. During the Night of the Shops today on 10 May (the consumer equivalent of the Night of the Arts), shopping malls, department stores and boutiques are allowed to stay open late. Camp Pixelache opens on with a keynote speech by Vinay Gupta, a specialist on infrastructure theory and geopolitical risks who is best known for developing the open-source emergency shelter Hexayurt. Sweetness ensues, no doubt. The festival is arranged by Forum, Kämp and Kluuvi, along with other property owners with the Helsinki 200 Years foundation.

this year, the Ihana Helsinki festival is planned to become an annual explosion of flowers and events returning to the city every spring. Camp Pixelache is a laidback "unconference" event based on the BarCamp model, meaning that the audience is not only allowed, but in fact encouraged, to take part in planning the program and taking the floor by offering short presentations or hosting discussions.

CHANCES are, not many readers have managed to ferret out the old Koko Jazz Club at its location on the corner of Pitkäsilta, but take my word for it it was the ultimate in intimacy. By following a brochure that is available from Virka, visi-
tors can soak in the rich history of the city at their own speed, discovering aspects that they may have otherwise overlooked. a parade to celebrate Helsinki's 200th anniversary as Finland's capital, whereas Saturday is filled with programme for families and children. DIWO (Do It With Others) is the main theme of Camp Pixelache on Saturday 12 May. That is: great visuals, inventive characters, memorable set pieces, cheeky humour and imagination running wild. As a part of the city's bicentenary celebrations, the exhibition charts the growth
and evolution of Helsinki, utilising a new multi-touch display, objects, films and video clips that seek to bring the world of the past to life for visitors. There are some foreign stars on the books too (Tim

the Chef's Menu (53.80) hits the spot. The nutritional benefits include being a good source of vitamins A, B6, C, E and K, as well as calcium, magnesium, zinc, fibre, protein, riboflavin, niacin and folic acid. Prehistoric evidence shows it was eaten in Egypt as far back as 20,000 BC and it even appears in a third century Roman cookbook. It gets off to a really good start with asparagus and seven different accompaniments, including the traditional Hollandaise sauce, salmon, shrimp, reindeer mousse, artichoke, salad of asparagus and cold-smoked pork. You can also indulge yourself and your group in a Tar Initiation Ceremony just for the fun of it.

is something almost noble about the way asparagus presents itself to be harvested. When eaten, the elegance with which it grows is reflected on the palate. One has to be really careful not to overpower the asparagus with overly strong or acidic flavours, and the next course in this menu is perfect - veal fried in butter and flavoured with sage, again including green asparagus. Restaurant Nuevo has a new head chef, Aleksi Malkamäki, who has invented some remarkable combinations to go with asparagus. The latter sounds a bit odd, but it works and is washed down well by a high acidity Riesling (menu 52).
