In response Green MP Oras Tynkkynen said: "Timo Soini himself wants to decide other people's death on their behalf, as he is denying their right to euthanasia." In March this year a poll by Aamulehti found that 77 per cent of respondents would support euthanasia if it was something terminally ill patients wanted for themselves. Currently in Europe, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium remain the only countries where euthanasia has been legalised.

Earlier in the year, Finnair unions expressed consternation when it emerged that the company had paid millions in retention bonuses to top management, while staff were experiencing pay cuts and redundancies. and MP Timo Soini (PS), immediately lashed out at the statement, with Räsänen stating: "The Christian Democrats' position on euthanasia is clear: we are not involved in a government that would legalise the killing of sick or disabled people." Soini, who converted to Catholicism a number of years ago, spoke of "killing the defenceless" and the Greens' wish "to play God with life and death" in his blog on Sunday. future success is evidently built on the evergrowing field of entrepreneurs and its innovations, as well as the entrepreneurs' ability to provide employment opportunities. I dare say that the future of entrepreneurship in Finland looks bright. In the Nokia network, a multitude of innovations has been created, and those innovations have contributed to our country's growth and well-being. At its best, Nokia's share of Finland's export was over 20 per cent. If you are interested in this kind of business, think about it and put your hand to the plough.

NOW, Nokia is in a crunch: its share of the Finnish economy is far from what it was in its best years. For example, the forest industry has new opportunities in the bio-based economy. Young technology entrepreneurs are ambitious, and they have the know-how to go out and conquer the world. Nowadays, the forest industry's share of our total output has fallen to approximately five per cent. Over the course of approximately ten years, the number of entrepreneurs has increased by a quarter. It has been a pleasure to note that interest in entrepreneurship is also strong in technical universities. If the political will can be found, matters improving entrepreneurship can be readily fixed. The key explanation for this phenomenon in Finland is globalisation.

more intense competition and rapidly changing market circumstances, large companies have transformed into organisational machines, whereas actual production is often done outside the company by small or medium-sized enterprises. I don't think so. Business services, such as financial administration, marketing, management consultancy and export promotion, include many entrepreneur-led expert companies. THE ECONOMIC structural change can also be seen in the increased number of entrepreneurs. Also, from amongst the creative entrepreneurs, everyone is hoping to find new world-class actors ideally, new Nokias. This development began to accelerate in Finland as early as the 1990s, and still continues to grow. Various expert services have also increased the number of entrepreneurs. The opinions expressed in this section are the writers' own and do not represent the official policy of the Helsinki Times.

Entrepreneurship carries Finland
A sea of change in the structure of the Finnish economy has already occurred, and entrepreneurs run the small and medium-sized enterprises that are the new growth engine, writes Jussi Järventaus.
IN YEARS past Finland was known as a country of forest and metal industry, led by large companies. Helsinki Times reserves the right to accept or reject submissions, as well as to edit or shorten the text. For example, in the restaurant and cleaning sectors there are many new entre-

You can submit your articles to viewpoint@helsinkitimes.fi. The most popular sector for new entrepreneurs has been the service sector, especially health and well-being and social services. Main targets for improvement are the taxation incentives and job market functionality. It can be justly said that entrepreneurs are responsible for the employment situation in Finland. Even though politicians talk warmly about entrepreneurship, the structural changes of industry and commerce are not sufficiently reflected in political practice just yet. This is probably a temporary phenomenon.

tance of the entrepreneurial sector was clearly in evidence: in the entrepreneurial sector, only a few thousand jobs were lost, whereas the total number of jobs lost nationally was almost 50,000. What is comforting about the situation is that matters regarding entrepreneurship and competitiveness on a larger scale are still mainly in Finland's own hands. Many of the basic elements of our competitiveness are fortunately in place: a good education system, a stable society, minimal corruption and a strong legalist state principle. At the same time, we of course have to emphasise the important role of the large companies in our economy. Fifteen to twenty years ago, entrepreneurship was met with reservation in Finland, but now the overwhelming majority of citizens strongly support entrepreneurship. During those years, 77,426 new jobs were created in the entrepreneurial sector, whereas the large companies had to lay off people.

An aging population
· Finland is the fastest aging country in Europe. · The percentage of younger pensioners, aged 65-74, will peak in 2020. If the amount of monthly compensation were one thousand euros, the insurance would cost 10,000-15,000 euros when purchased at the age of 65. For example, 84 per cent of Finns approve of singing the traditional Suvivirsi or Summer Hymn in schools. The research data from the University of Chicago is based on surveys conducted in 1991, 1998 and 2008. Those who believe in God are few in number, considering that 77 per cent of Finns are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.

of elderly in Finland's population increases, the care costs for life's final years will more than double over the next two decades, even by cautious estimates. Only 27 per cent of Finns continue to believe in the God of Christianity, and the percentage of believers has fallen by 10 per cent in only four years. Predicting what kind of care pensioners will need is difficult, and this uncertainty is also reflected in the services offered by municipalities. The number of pensioners over 75 will continue to grow until 2040. The study looked at people's religious views in 30 countries around the world. The research findings reflect how church membership and church traditions are aspects of Finnish culture, but do not necessarily imply personal faith. Gender and marital status clearly affect whether or not life's final years will be spent in institutional care. Half of Finns do not require any institutional care in their old age, while

about ten per cent will need such care for at least four years. The Research Institute of the Finnish Economy (ETLA), the University of Helsinki and the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) have studied this development, and assessed what kind of insurance might supplement existing financial resources for institutional care. · Differentiation between pensioner age groups is significant, as the need for care, and thus care costs, increase after 75 years of age. · Medical and care costs for the elderly will increase onefifth by 2020 and 50 per cent by 2040. Only in Israel, Slovenia and Russia are the ranks of religious believers growing. The worldwide trend is similar. In former East Germany, for example, only 13 per cent believe in God. The survey shows that there are a record number of atheists in Finland today, as one in five Finns does not believe in the existence of God. Others would not buy insurance precisely because they value the care of their relatives, which they can expect to receive more readily if they do not have insurance", says ETLA's Research Director Tarmo Valkonen. Municipalities are attempting to shift some of the financial responsibility for mounting care costs to residents. HELSINKI TIMES

The Finnish government proposes more restrictions on alcohol advertising. On Monday, only the second day after flotation, Facebook shares dipped on the NASDAQ technology exchange. · In general, all alcohol advertising would be prohibited, although some exceptions would be allowed. "At the moment [alcohol] advertising can't be avoided, it's everywhere," Guzenina-Richardson stated. "The risk of getting caught is so big that drivers don't dare to neglect working time regulations," Arto Hakala says.
· Daily driving time can be no longer than nine hours. His colleague Sami Lerto from Espoo, who has just driven another busload of children to the same place, concurs. "Small and relatively little-known companies are the ones that most commonly violate the industry's collective labour agreement and resting period regulations." THE DEBATE on the draft bill to restrict alcohol advertising, put forward by Minister of Health and Social Services Maria Guzenina-
Richardson (SDP), is heating up with sports bodies, media groups and industry federations all weighing in on the discussion. Japisson admits that the ending of sponsorship would be a hard blow to sports organisations' revenue, which is why the SLU proposes that the law should be amended to include a three to five year transitional period, during which sports organisations would have time to look into alternative sources of revenue. On older buses, however, cardboard versions may still be in use. But Valtteri Niiranen, CEO of The Finnish Media Industry Federation, claims that that the current law and the brewing industry's selfregulation are sufficient. At lowest, the share price slid by 14 per cent to 33 USD, 5 USD below flotation price. However, Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry Federation chief Elina Ussa believes the greatest danger relating to alcohol sales comes from price competition, and that consumption would not be reduced by an advertising ban, as people will simply purchase the cheapest alcohol available. COLUMN Haglund to claim the chair of the Swedish People's Party
A Hufvudstadsbladet survey indicates that Member of the European Parliament Carl Haglund seems set for the position of chair of the Swedish People's Party. Ussa also claims that the proposed law would be a serious blow to sport which is heavily dependent on alcohol advertising for revenue.
Sports jerseys The bill, which will be submitted to Parliament during the spring session, also calls
for a ban on the outdoor advertising of alcohol for example at bus stops and metro stations - but also where it is visible to the public, which would include advertising on the jerseys of ice hockey, soccer and other sports teams. Sales of alcohol at sports venues had been banned in Brazil since 2003, as an attempt to reduce violence, but football's global governing body, FIFA, demanded the change because brewer Budweiser is a World Cup sponsor.

"In sport, you want to develop a healthy lifestyle, and alcohol consumption by children and young people should not be in any way part of it," stated SLU Secretary General Teemu Japisson. His greatest success, before coaching the national side, was winning the Finnish championship with HPK in 2006. "You can't eat a plastic card, but a cardboard one you can sometimes misplace," Sami Lerto quips. The race for the chair is yet to be decided, though, as 81 representatives were undecided and 15 were out of reach. Investors who purchased shares for Friday's highest valuation, 45 USD, thereby lost 27 per cent of their investment. These can be misused. The tachograph records driving and resting periods. Drivers believe users of the older system can violate legally prescribed resting period regulations. Defeat in the bronze medal game to the Czech Republic brought the curtain down on a tournament where Finns had high hopes of retaining the title.
· The bill aims to protect children and young people. Henriksson's support stems largely from Ostrobothnia and the women's organisation of the party. Sergeant Jaakkola says work-
ing time regulations are violated by small and large bus companies in equal measure, but adds that he would personally still prefer the services of a large and familiar company. · Alcohol would not be advertised on TV or radio between 7:00 and 23:00. · Drivers must take a break of at least 45 minutes after four and a half hours of driving. · After a workday, drivers must rest for an uninterrupted period of at least 11 hours. If you go up
to Lapland, you will have two drivers." Things may not be quite so well arranged with all bus companies taking children on class trips. Trips aren't organised in such a way that the driver can't manage them. "You can expect the most problems with a company you are unfamiliar with, for example when you choose the cheap-
est option," Jaakkola says. "On long journeys there are definitely problems with some buses. "This was just a short journey, but on longer ones we're also very careful to take enough rest breaks," says driver Arto Hakala. However, it is expected that the matter will not be resolved until autumn. Amid concerns about the massive loss of revenue to domestic media, Niiranen believes that banning alcohol advertising on TV and radio between 7:00 am and 11:00 pm would eliminate alcohol ads on television altogether, and could also push smaller radio stations into financial trouble. · The bill will be submitted to Parliament during the spring session. The digital tachograph records the actual driving and resting periods. "Our viewpoint is that if the product is legal, it must be advertised. Prices have soared
THE PRICES of the allotment garden cottages have soared everywhere in the country. The study also examined how reading habits are
changing with the increased popularity of digital news reading, concluding that it is becoming more common for news consumers to rely both on newspapers' print and digital offerings, as online headlines, updates and summaries complement the print paper for many. The average size of the cottages is 30 square metres and that of the allotments 250 to 300 square metres. According to an earlier poll by Kansallinen Mediatutkimus, published late last year, Finns spend 44 minutes per day, on average, reading the newspaper, and 11 minutes reading the news on a computer, mobile phone or reading device. The allotment garden founded in Kotiniemi, Lahti in 1985 still has a quarter of the original holders left. Some 96 per cent of Finns over 12 years old read a newspaper weekly, according to a poll commissioned by Kansallinen Mediatutkimus, the Finnish Audit Bureau of Circulations. If his estimations are correct this is a relatively insignificant contribution in the grand scheme of the internal battles wracking Syria.
Ideological fighters However, a Syrian activist who regularly crosses between the two countries
complained recently that small bands of ideological fighters, some coming from Lebanon, were fomenting violence even when it did not serve the interests of the uprising. Sheikh Mazen al-Muhammad, a leading Salafi figure in the city, says, "You won't find a household in Lebanon, especially in the north here in Tripoli and Acca, that has not suffered terrible things at the hands of the Syrian regime. While the events are highly disturbing they are not necessarily surprising for Lebanon's residents, who have grown accustomed to violent clashes along the impoverished sectarian divides in the city.
fought, as usual, between the anti-Syrian regime Sunnis in Bab el-Tabbeneh and the pro-Syrian regime Alawites co-religionists with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the neighbouring district of Jabel Mouessin. He says around 50 to 70 fighters from northern Lebanon have joined the armed uprising across the border. A week before the fighting began Khaled Daher, a vociferous opposition MP for the northern town of Akkar said, "The army is answerable to Hezbullah and the Syrian regime. Everyone knows the army is with the Syrians here and the people are not." Conversely, those who oppose the armed opposition in Syria highlight the strain the army has been put under to not embroil Lebanon in the conflict and control the flow of arms and fighters across
the border. Armed fighting in the city soon followed, and the already strained relations between Lebanon's security services and many of the communities in the north were frayed further. Perhaps the difference with this conflagration was the spark that ignited the fire. A local Islamist, Shadi al-Mawlawi, was lured into a trap and detained by the Lebanese security forces Saturday last week amid accusations that he was linked to al-Qaeda. Furthermore, a series of bomb attacks in Syrian cities have also led to speculation that more ideologically extreme elements are trying to destabilise and fragment the country.

So far the countries that would bear the main cost, such as Germany, have rejected this plan. As the bank is independent, it has refused to take such a step. Investors have poured into these perceived safe havens. THIS bled over into the traditional news outlets. Another possibility is for the European Central Bank to begin more aggressive buying of government debt. (He ended the day on Friday at $19.18 billion.) The doubts about the policy response are found not just among professional investors, but also the broader public. Retail investors were getting a suspiciously large chunk of the offering, meaning the big institutions were uninterested. As the four-year old crisis seems to be worsening and not improving, policy makers are scrambling to contain the disaster. I HAVE some scientific evidence to back this up, too: using Google's Ngram Viewer, which searches the prevalence of words in publications, I have found that the phrase "best ever" has increased almost 30% since 1980. On the BBC website, the Facebook IPO was judged to be a bigger story than the rebellion in Syria, suspicions about Iran's nuclear weapons programme, or a new plan to feed starving children in Africa. European countries have adopted two main fiscal tools to manage the crisis: strict limits on government debts and deficits, and a bailout mechanism to be used in emergency cases, such as with Ireland, Greece and Portugal.
Several nations, mainly Germany but also including Finland and the Netherlands, have been the beneficiaries of this flight. In Lapland pollen counts vary from low to moderate. This explains why many people react minimally to pollen, except at very high concentrations. From June, in the case of sickness absences lasting 90 working days, the employer and occupational health care need to map out together with the employee how she or he could return to work. These may develop into coughing and congestion. If the symptoms are serious, they may well disrupt one's rest, leading to fatigue, irritability, headaches and a host of other nasty effects. Also, the employer must notify occupational health care if an employee's sickness absence spans a month, either uninterruptedly or in shorter periods. This not only soothes inflamed tissues, it also traps the pollen before it gets to you. A vaccine, which consists of deactivated pathogens (bacteria or viruses), or parts of them, is introduced to the recipient's immune system usually via injection, but sometimes also orally. We will go with the standard, tried and tested, state immunisation programme." When enough people in a population are immune to a particular contagious disease, it becomes very difficult for that disease to spread through the population. Herd immunity allows for a very high level of protection against certain diseases, but it is fragile and needs to be constantly maintained. There are literally millions of people now leading healthy and productive lives as a result of the protection offered by vaccination programmes, who would otherwise have suffered debilitation or death.
An Afghan health worker administers a polio vaccination to a child as part of a new three-day nationwide immunisation campaign against polio. The immune system responds by developing the appropriate antibodies, which then provide protection against the disease. Thus for the herd immunity to be protective, almost everyone needs to be vaccinated.
Your responsibility What this means is that every child who does not receive vaccination is a weak link in the armour that herd immunity provides. Even if one person is exposed and actually falls sick, he or she is generally surrounded by others who are immune. A very large part of this health and safety is due to vaccination, but like any other preventative and protective measure, it must be kept up assiduously. For example, the amount of oestrogen in contraceptive pills can now be lowered, possibly reducing side effects such as depression, irritability and loss of libido. All in all, the world is a much healthier and safer place than it was a hundred years ago, especially for people in developed nations. The condom is still the only method of contraception that also protects against sexually transmitted diseases.
Coxa offers a new chance to find the joy of movement
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder in the world. Coxa is a hospital specialized in joint replacements. Nevertheless, there were also sceptics. Men worried that the pill would make them sterile, and some claimed it made sex less exciting. Instead, it seems to interact with certain genetic risk factors which put the recipients at risk of narcolepsy in the first place, and these genetic factors are actually rare in most populations, although, unfortunately, they seem to be present in Finland and Sweden. Multiple studies have shown that there is absolutely no link between the MMR vaccine and the incidence of juvenile autism. "Luckily there was an engagement ring on my finger!" says Brusila. The contraceptive pill arrived in Finland in January 1962. For the first time women had control over their own fertility," says Pirkko Brusila, a gynaecologist. While good medical care allowed most of the affected children to recover, there were still preventable deaths and debilitation. Consider Pandemrix: it has been established that
to a study carried out in 2011 by Taloustutkimus, an independent Finnish market research company, birth control is now more important for women than it used to be, as two out of three respondents said that contraception is important in their current life situation. "Contraception is usually the responsibility of women. As we have seen just recently from the Pandemrix-narcolepsy link, there are certain risks involved, as there are in all medical procedures. Brusila remembers her doctor's attitude when she went to ask for her first prescription: "so are you even engaged?", he asked suspiciously. There is no reason whatsoever to fall for their line. The question is whether the benefits outweigh the risks, and in almost all cases it is possible unequivocally to say that they do. It is thus every parent's duty, to themselves, their families and to society at large, to make sure that their children receive all the vaccinations that they should.

ONE WAY of easing mental health crises would be a nationwide, three-digit mental distress hotline where people in need could call at all hours. In one case, a father murdered his family after seeking help three times in the morning of the crime to no avail.
MENTAL health problems are still a taboo in society, and it might be insurmountably difficult to try to tell someone about your problems. Finnish Mining Boom Prompts Regulation Backlash on Polluters
"FINLAND'S mining companies stand to face tougher rules as environmental damage prompts regulators to check the Nordic nation's mining boom. AS A MEMBER of Parliament, I have proposed a petitionary motion to introduce the mental distress hotline. The threshold for seeking help is especially high if you are in need of psychiatric help, as well as suffering from substance abuse. Just as Nokia's sure touch with well-designed, con-
sumer-friendly products seems to have deserted it, fears are growing that Finland, whose reputation for innovation rested largely on the handset maker's success, may be losing its competitive edge..."

BLOOMBERG 16 May. The phone number should be as short and concise as the current nationwide emergency number, so people could remember it in every situation. This indicates that the threshold for receiving treatment is too high, or even impossible, especially on the psychiatric side. Just before May Day this year, Finland was shaken when a 43-year-old man stabbed a 17-year-old girl to death in Varkaus. During the course the student will learn the basics of programming using the PHP language. It is clear that the threshold for receiving mental health treatment needs to be lowered and excessive bureaucracy eliminated.
Finnish Art Week in Kochi, India is the first festival on such a scale
to promote Finnish art in Kerala. This kind of hotline would also probably ease the rush at the 112 emergency exchange, and would guide a significant number of calls straight to the right address. Even without any calculations, we can surmise that the expenses of a hotline would be minimal compared to the price that society pays for mentally distressed people's last cries for help.

Where do you live. Särkänniemi is also the first amusement park in the world to have collaborated with Angry Birds. Meaning: To explain in the simplest way possible. There's also Ciaocaffe, which makes its own yummy Italian ice-cream and has a wine list that makes you want to stay a little longer. The Hakaniemi market hall was founded in 1914 and it was voted as the winner of the Best of Helsinki Awards in 2008. Their philosophy is ecology, ethics and aesthetics and they stick to these with something akin to religious zeal. The building itself is a gorgeous example of an 18th century Helsinki building with its classic lines, large windows and accented frames.
Stylish is the word that comes to mind when you step inside. What kind of neighbourhood is it. Särkänniemi is open every day from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm during summertime. How long have you lived there. Example: Onko minun pakko vääntää rautalangasta, vai ymmärsitkö, mitä tarkoitan. I live in Hakaniemi, in the heart of Helsinki. These knives are so beautiful you might like to hang one on your wall. It's also within 10-15 minutes' walk from the city centre. Each piece tells its own story of the famous Finnish epic poem. The recentlyreopened Kiseleff Quarter on Senate Square has been renovated and customers have been highly impressed with what is now on offer there. Even if you can't afford it, it's worth a look-see just to linger in the atmosphere of such luxury. For yet another angle on Finnish design, there's Globe Hope, its doors opening onto the Aleksanterinkatu side of the square. It is in the perfect spot, only a few minutes away from
Kallio. Packed with stylish shops and boutiques, this is a real gem for the in-the-know Helsinki shopper.

You'll find famous Finnish clothing designer Jukka Rintala's creations in his shop on the second floor. Explore different areas of Helsinki and its surroundings with a local guide!

GIORGIO ALESSIO
Did you know?
· The Hakaniemi market hall is one of the three most important market halls in Helsinki. www.sarkanniemi.fi
Giorgio Alessio is a 33-yearold Italian sales manager. Café Engel has always been a bastion for many Helsinki residents and when it closed for the renovation project, many of us felt quite bereft of our lovely breakfasts and the other goodies to be had from the hands of their capable chefs. Finns really like their rollercoasters, so it's no wonder that Särkänniemi's most beloved ride, Tornado, just happens to be a rollercoaster. A little trendi-
er might be the combined efforts of Juju Jewelry and others on the second floor with their modern silver designs. That would definitely be the Hakaniemi market hall
and the market square that springs to life soon as spring comes. Aside from the Hakaniemi market hall, there are also many stores selling foreign food and a few stores selling organic food as well. But Mayor of Helsinki, Jussi Pajunen, and his motivated team at Helsinki City have been working tirelessly to make sure that certain areas will be revitalised to pull in the punters. Stepping around the gallery, there's a stark contrast, but no less innovation, in the design and clothing of Sanna Lehto at Tarina-Asu. 16

Exploring Finnish idioms
In this weekly series, Helsinki Times looks at a common idiom in the Finnish language.
Vääntää rautalangasta
The Kiseleff Quarter has seen a major renovation and is now open for business. Sunn Restaurant is not to be sneezed at either. Historical reenactors on beautiful Sofiankatu. Do I have to walk you through this even more slowly, or did you get it?
Breathing life into old quarters
The Kiseleff Quarter on Senate Square has recently been renovated and revamped. I like everything about Hakaniemi, and the best part is that I have all of these awesome places and services within walking distance from my home. What is special about your neighbourhood. The market hall with its small shops, the market square next to it and the beautiful old buildings all around. No bazaar would be complete without food and drink and there are lots to choose from in Kiseleff House. The building is close to all Hakaniemi Metro station openings as well as to the Hakaniemi market hall. Other things you would like HT readers to know about your neighbourhood. The fabrics burst with colour and the designs complement the
highly tactile material used for these almost organic creations. During summertime on Sundays Särkänniemi also doubles as a backdrop for the Finnish TV show Pitkä kuuma kesä (Long Hot Summer). Here you'll see ecological creations made of recycled materials: old curtains and army uniform fabrics become dresses and skirts, while old seatbelts come in handy as handles for their bags. Wandering in and around it, you may feel that you've taken a step back in history with a modern twist.

Finland's most visited No.2
In this series Helsinki Times looks into the 10 most visited tourist attractions in 2011.
In this fortnightly series, Helsinki Times has a chat with different people about the places they live in. Särkänniemi is not only is an amusement park, but it also has a planetarium, an aquarium, a dolphinarium, a children's zoo and Näsinneula observation tower, where there is also a restaurant with a splendid view. The other two are in the Market Square at the end of Esplanadi and in Hietalahti next to which the flea market by the same name is held in summer. This summer they will open Angry Birds Land, an attraction dedicated to the world famous game. Feast your eyes on the patisserie of Teemu & Markus, two chefs who decided that working in restaurants was no longer where their hearts were and opened up a fantasy world of sweet treats with lots of new ideas. Direct English translation: To twist from a steel wire. · Hakaniemi is a wonderland for food lovers and home cooks. This one-stop party shop gives you everything from spectacular ball gowns to funky men's wear, to hats, candles and serviettes. Usually used when another person hasn't understood something after having had it explained to them many times. It is definitely a city one, on the eastern side of Helsinki city centre. · Ympyrätalo (Roundhouse) has gotten its name from its shape. Some of the attractions have their own opening hours, which can be found online. Another really nice aspect is the Töölönlahti park which is simply perfect for walking and jogging!. · Hakaniemi used to be inhabited mainly by working-class people and there were many demonstrations held at the market square back in the day. Until recently this was also reflected in the apartment prices. They're functional too, and you wouldn't want to make the mistake of sliding your finger along the blade! Finnish jewellery has always been acclaimed for its simplicity and elegant lines and this is to be found at the Kalevala store on the Unioninkatu side of the building. · Arena theatre, which is a part of Helsinki City Theatre, is also located in Hakaniemi, on Hämeentie.

Särkänniemi
Among amusement parks in Finland, even though Linnanmäki is preferred by more people, Särkänniemi, situated in Tampere, is a very close second. What do you like about your neighbourhood?
What's not to like. Recommend one shop or service in your neighbourhood that you would like to promote. Lunch and dinner are served daily and there's also brunch on Saturday and Sunday mornings until the respectable hour of 3 pm! The accent is on youth with style in one of the oldest buildings in Helsinki. I have lived here for approximately three years now. Classic gastronomy with a young,
passionate attitude is the order of the day at this restaurant which looks out on the historic Senate Square. What's more, it offers a rich variety of transport options and other kinds of services
The Culture Tram is a joint project of HSL, Helsinki City Transport HKL and Korjaamo Culture Factory. During this time, the Metro will run only from Mellunmäki to Kulosaari and from Vuosaari to Itäkeskus. However, timetable booklets for Espoo and Vantaa can be picked up at HSL service points, libraries and R-kiosks: they will not be delivered to home addresses. Is it safe to use public transport. The key message of the HSL campaign has been that antisocial or insulting behaviour does not belong on public transport. Contrary to the previous announcement, summer timetables will take effect on 18 June, which is two weeks later than the previous summers. The terminal point of the additional buses, 99 from Itäkeskus and 99B from Herttoniemi, is the Central Railway Station. The objective of this experiment is to find out what would be the best way of producing and distributing the timetables in the years to come. The tram will run from Töölön halli via Kamppi and Central Railway Station to Hakaniemi under route number 5.
Break in the Helsinki city centre Metro traffic in July
The Metro will not operate between Kulosaari and Ruoholahti from 14 through 22 July. Passengers have been able to record their wishes for travel peace at the Matkarauhaa.fi website. Co-passengers have also been asked to avoid strong-scented perfumes and talking loudly into their mobile phones.
A book of wishes
Travel peace wishes have been compiled into a book that will be handed over to Deputy Mayor Pekka Sauri on Sunday 27 May at 12:30 pm on the Savanni Stage of the festival. The tram operates on route 7B Wednesday through Friday. fi/en and the timetable of the Culture Tram at www.hsl.fi/en. However, commuter train traffic will switch to summer timetables on 4 June.
Culture Tram back on track
Helsinki Region Transport HSL's Culture Tram has returned to the tracks after a break. In addition to all of this, HSL will organise a panel discussion on Sunday from 1:20 pm to 2:00 pm on the Taiga Stage. The theme of the discussion is safety on public transport. The connections between the city centre and eastern Helsinki will be replaced by additional bus services. On 20 June, the Culture Tram will move to a new route. Route-specific Helsinki timetable leaflets are available at the HSL service points as well as on trams and buses. The timetable search is available online at www.hsl.fi/EN. Now the campaign will receive a worthy ending at the colourful World Village Festival, held on the weekend of 26 and 27 May in Kaisaniemi Park and Railway Square. After this, HSL will treat everyone to a rhythmic concert by Jukka Poika & Sound Explosion Band. The Metro will run at 8-minute intervals. HELSINKI TIMES

Travel peace campaign finale at the World Village Festival
Welcome to a topical panel discussion on public transport safety and an energetic gig by reggae musician Jukka Poika at the World Village Festival on Sunday 27 May.
Helsinki Region Transport's (HSL) travel peace campaign kicked off in January, when travel peace for public transport in the Helsinki region was declared. You can find information about the programme at www.korjaamo. Everyone should be able to travel or work on commuter trains, buses, trams, Metro or the Suomenlinna ferry without fear of physical or verbal abuse. Everyone is welcome to follow the discussion and also to participate. Over 5,500 suggestions have now been submitted. Live performances start at 5:14 pm when the tram leaves the Töölön halli stop and heads down Mannerheimintie towards the city centre. The HSL stand will be open at the Market of Possibilities-tent during the whole festival, and you can direct your questions about public transport in the Helsinki region there. Several tram and bus connections replacing the Metro are available in the city centre.. Thus, winter timetables will remain in effect until 17 June. Also, feeder buses from Herttoniemi will run to and from Hakaniemi under route numbers 80X, 81X, 82X, 85X, 86X and 88X. The Culture Tram offers live performances and exhibitions at the normal fare of a tram ride. You can state your personal travel peace wishes at the stand, as well as participate in a prize draw to win an HSL season ticket for one year.
Summer timetables available but not as before
Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) will not print the timetable booklet for Helsinki at all this summer
The effects look crisp, the humour seems present and the chance to see Brolin embody Jones might be enough to push this one over the line. Having been organised annually since 1995, the free festival offers a variety of cultural events for all the senses from around the world, by way of food, music, circus, dance, theatre, art and other activities. Subsequent years saw them disappear on hiatus, limping back into view with the underwhelming Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned in 2004. But when he falters (Casanova, 2005; Dear John, 2010) the platitudes dry up fast, resulting in less than stellar reviews. Lord of the Rings, Evil Dead, The Bourne Trilogy, Back to the Future all of these are recognised as outand-out classic trilogies. With support from Emily Blunt as McGregor's love interest, and featuring a highly touted appearance from Kristin Scott Thomas, this might just be a passable option for whiling away a couple of hours.

with him the warm vibes of summer, local reggae pioneer Jukka Poika bounces his way onto the Tavastia stage this Saturday 26 May as a part of Wildlife Helsinki 2012.
Armed with all manner of socially conscious topics, the native of Haukipudas first made a splash as a member of the seminal outfit Soul Captain Band, before stepping out on his own with the album Äänipää in 2007. The impressive and intriguing exhibition of 150 works, including paintings, sculptures, sketches, architectural designs, objects and furniture, is on display until 10 June. However, it did not attract the Finnish artists of the time, who were mainly concerned with beautiful natural landscapes and peaceful contemporary scenes more in harmony with their own nature. To make matters worse, director Barry Sonnenfeld hasn't made a hit movie since the second outing, with bombs such as the steampunk disaster of Wild Wild West (1999) glaring inclusions in his back catalogue. The manifesto proclaims the philosophy of Futurism: the glorification of machines, speed, technology, noise, violence, and movement. Most of the works in the exhibition belong to private collections. But then there are the trios that falter, hoping to replicate the roaring success of the first installment yet tripping up along the way. The World Village Festival is coordinated by Finnish civil society's leading expert organisation on development issues, KEPA. They were facilitated by the Italian Futurism Society. And so, after the joys of the original were followed swiftly by a flat and uninspired sequel, this week we get to see if Men in Black 3 will reverse the series' downward spiral and rediscover its original spark. In light of the highly disappointing follow-up some 10 years ago, stories of behind-the-scenes tinkering have plagued the production of this latest instalment, with filming commencing before a script was finished, with a scheduled break in the middle of shooting in order to finish the script. Poika then entered the studio to record his most popular album yet, Yhdestä puusta. Furthermore, a number of documentaries are on offer, along with panel discussions, children's activities and various clubs being staged around town. With its infectious mash-up of samples and beats riding the crest of the rave wave, single Voodoo People helped the long-player make a huge impact worldwide. Going straight to the number one position in the local charts, the release was preceded by the EMMA Award-winning single Silkkii towards the end of last year. The movement was a reaction to a manifesto published by the Italian poet and editor Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (1876-1944) in La gazzetta dell'Emilia in 1909, and later reproduced in the French daily Le Figaro. His third full-length release Kylmästä lämpimään

made a significant splash on the local scene, with cuts such as Mielihyvää and Ikirouta elevating his profile. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen offers Ewan McGregor flexing his full Scottish brogue for the tale of a fisheries expert who helps realise a sheik's vision of bringing the sport of flyfishing to the desert. However, the casting of Brolin is an inspired choice, and Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement is a welcome addition as the lead bad guy. Futurism was also present in literature, music, the cinema, design, and theatre. hopefully

GOOD things come in threes, right. With follow-up single Älä tyri nyt keeping him in the public eye, Poika's appearance at Tavastia arrives before a summer packed with festival appearances around the country. Perhaps the most interesting development this time around sees Tommy Lee Jones's Agent K being pushed to the sidelines in favour of Josh Brolin's spot-on impersonation of a younger ver-
sion of our favourite cranky Texan, as Will Smith's Agent J travels back in time to the `60s to stop an alien from assassinating K and changing the course of history. NOW,
it's no secret that kebabs are an ubiquitous presence in Helsinki. To its side sits a small serving of rice, diced salad and a single grilled red chilli. Each of the items has a distinct taste, with the tomato acili ezme salad bustling to the front of the palette with its strong, rich flavours. "We have many regular customers. As I busy myself with finishing my plate, one of them tells me he has been living in Finland for 25 years and that he always comes to Ani to enjoy the best kebab in the country.
Each of the different lamb dishes has its own distinct flavour. A basket of pita bread is also at hand.
Sweet finale Now Finns love their coffee around 12 kilograms or so per person annually if statistics are to be believed but I wonder how this would be if each cup were as strong as a Turkish coffee. The creamy and salty taste of the feta sauce is divine, with the aubergine also making a good impression. "You can eat all types of food here. People know us here. This burst of sweetness is further propelled by the addition of homemade baklava and kadayif (4.90 for three). I'm inclined to believe Ugucu he really does know how to make the dish that is synonymous with the region he grew up in. Surprisingly, however, the lamb chop was slightly less succulent than its counterparts.
Grilled selection With my empty plate promptly whisked away, I am soon greeted by the sight of kuzu karisik, a grill platter with four different types of grilled lamb (16.90). Soon I am commencing my meal with a meze plate (9-14), containing a number of vegetarian selections with Turkish bread on the side. Among the many cultural items filling the room, to my right hangs a stringed musical instrument, with the stone decoration on the back wall depicting a scene of girls dancing and a man playing a drum. A number of the items reveal the proximity of Turkey's neighbour, Greece, with the cuisines of both countries sharing a number of similar dishes such as wrapped vine leaves, along with the yoghurt-based sauce cacik that closely resembles tzatziki. Conveniently coupled with around 25 different varieties of pizza on a swollen menu at various fast food outlets around town, the kebab is perhaps best recognised here as a winning solution for late night revellers to aid the soaking up of the weekend's alcohol intake. For example, I come from Adana therefore I make the best Adana kebab. Served in a small espresso-sized cup upon a saucer decorated with blue patterns, this potent shot of caffeine (2.50) has only been made with medium sweetness, yet it packs a powerful kick. After taking a moment to survey the scene, my gaze returns once again to Ugucu, who is quick to point out the difference between what is served at Ani compared with the indulgence of kebab eateries located around town. Meanwhile, the shish kebab embodies a distinct grilled flavour, with a generous serving of lamb pieces on a skewer. "We have all kinds of customers here," Ugucu continues. One customer from Järvenpää has eaten here over 500 times." Offering halal meat on their menu, the authentic Turkish experience at Ani also extends to those who come to eat on a Saturday night, finding themselves in the presence of a belly dancer from 8 pm.

People don't come here for cheap food, they come for quality food." The door opens and in steps a customer, immediately welcomed with a warm and friendly moi from the waiter. While I continue to eat, in keeping with the authenticity of the restaurant, Ugucu and I are joined for a moment by a couple of Turkish men, sitting and sipping coffee as they laugh and chat. A final sip of my coffee and the bulk of coffee grains at the bottom of my cup signal that it's time to leave. The syrupy desserts cap off a fine meal. Perhaps making the strongest impression was that of the Adana kebab, made by mincing lamb, which is then mixed with chilli. For example, our meat is 100 per cent from Finland, not frozen." Sitting on a warm Turkish carpet that has been draped across the back and seat of my chair, I take a glance around Ani's dining area. Aside from this comprehensive choice, the à la carte menu offers a variety of Turkish dishes, and it's from here that Ugucu suggests I try something. Turkish music drifts gently across the
dining room that has been serving authentic cuisine for the past 30 years. "We have good food natural and fresh. But what about those who want to enjoy a more genuine Turkish experience, one that doesn't occur at 3:30 am. "We are the first Turkish restaurant in Helsinki," explains Erdinc Ugucu, manager of Turkish restaurant Ani, situated next to Nosturi, at Hietalahti. It is simply delicious. I count 19 cold options on the table, along with six hot dishes and Turkish bread all for 9.20 euros. We are like a brand. Fuelled by a rush of sugar, I decide to embark on a brief walk towards the city centre, content after a fine meal and enjoying a knowing glance at the many kebab places scattered along the route back.

Don't be put off by the familiar kerosene nose that often goes hand in hand with this grape varietal. Desserts include a mouth-watering chiliwhite chocolate mousse and carrot cake emblazoned with chilli-citrus syrup. A yellow white wine would be perfectly suitable for vegetarian dishes and you wouldn't want anything less than a brown one for your duck confit. We have a loyal customer base, whose opinions we have closely observed before enacting any changes. CANTINA WEST, a pillar of TexMex food culture in Finland since 1990, has refreshed itself and launched a series of theme weeks, beginning with feisty chili. They've done a pilot study at some of their shops, testing ways to simplify choices without cutting down on variety. "When dealing with a legend like Cantina West, all reforms must be done with extra caution. They're even making some decent sparkling wine in England these days! PAIRING food and wine has always been a tricky art, and it is even more difficult today with the glut of wines from all over the world. More herbaceous is André Stentz Riesling 2011 from Alsace (17.47). The wide range of the chili tastes requires richness and fullness from the wine that goes with it. From Washington State, Columbia Winery Small Lot Series Riesling 2007 (11.99) is a delight. A little pricier, it has balanced acidity, but doesn't lose its fruity character and can be classified as off-dry. Alko has recently spent a lot of money and time on consumer research. The newcomer in main courses will definitely spark the interest of meat eaters: buffalo steak with dark Bourbon sauce, potato croquettes, and vegetables on the side. The appetisers include three tingling options: habanero chilies with cheddar filling and crème fraîche, potato croquettes with chili cream, and Gorgonzola-glazed chili shrimps. The two offerings from the well-known cellar of Cono Sur in Chile are both great value for money (8.98 & 12.98). "Along with these reforms we are able to introduce theme weeks and work on a more ecological basis."
Besides implementing a more efficient customer service system, the restaurant also prides itself on being able to allow large parties to place orders without advance notice. Suggestion. This colour will then appear on the usual Alko label where you can see the price, country and other information. This wine explodes on the palate into papaya and peaches with enough minerality and acidity to give it structure. Now you can choose your type of red wine according to whether it is blue for fruity, berryish and fresh; pink for light and fruity and good for socialising; cerise for succulent and jammy, suitable for meat dishes; brick red for nuanced and developed wine; brown for robust and strong with a dose of tannins. Maybe this is to avoid bringing in wet snowy footprints. But I am referring to those intangible cultural features that make Finns distinct the world over. This can easily lead to errors and certainly makes for a confusing language. She is currently living in Finland with her boyfriend. One is not allowed inside a Finnish home without respecting the long-held tradition of removing your shoes first. After all, the Finns are the ones who invented the Instant Message. Combining the constant hawking sound in Dutch with the gagging sound of the Finnish "y", one would almost think that these two languages stem from a similar linguistic root. Three years ago we began offering our services in Helsinki our third year of working together for health and well-being!
Our broad selection of regenerating, stress-removing and revitalizing treatments has been very well received in Finland. Maybe there is a method to the madness. There are the typical Finnish idiosyncrasies: sauna, Finlandia vodka, cold winters, Fazer chocolate, Nokia cell phones and so on. Do you really have to take off your shoes upon entering someone's house. Punctuality is crucial and followed like law in Finland. 1 2 3 4 5 B A A C A

HAVING lived in Finland for over a year, I've observed many curious things. But there is nothing more puzzling than watching Finns in a dance or aerobics class with stoic looks on their faces. Whether they're saying hello or goodbye there will not be much physical contact amongst Finns. What's with the licorice flavour everywhere. The Finnish language is rooted in an entirely different and peripheral language family Finnic or Finno-Ugric. But is there too much structure. With a highly sophisticated text messaging system, the Finns can accomplish almost any task via text: from transferring money to making a date. And where on earth does the chaotic Finnish language come from. Their preferred candy licorice has stern nutritional benefits. But actually Finnish has no Germanic roots. The education system in Finland is seen as a global leader and even their hockey team is said to be highly disciplined. To let oneself
go is a concept unfamiliar to their structured culture. Don't expect hugs or cheek kisses from Finnish people when greeting, as these types of gestures are most likely reserved only
for family members and on limited occasions at that. For people who spend a lifetime total of several years in the sauna relaxing and de-stressing, why is body language so restricted. We welcome You to experience the beneficial effects of our treatments on your health and well-being and to breathe new life into the spring together!
