Chairman of the Finnish Central Association for Mental Health Pekka Sauri points out that centralised storage of firearms would make acts such as that in Hyvinkää less likely to occur."The best way by far to prevent these kinds of acts is to limit the availability of firearms and to supervise their storage," Sauri says. Festival fever Whether you prefer metal or Mozart, there will be plenty of opportunities to get your groove on this summer. The news that citizens in Azerbaijan and Belarus have been arrested and sometimes tortured after mobile phone technology allowed for those citizens to be indentified to security services will come as a shock to people less acquainted with state surveillance. He believes the Hyvinkää shooting proves that gun control laws are still far from adequate. The communications giant, which is jointly Finnish and Swedish owned, say that any phone operator in a given country including EU countries is subject to the laws of that country relating to security services' access to network information. Bicycles are permitted on the Metro, Suomenlinna ferry and, outside of peak hours, on commuter trains but they not allowed on buses or trams. Boys in particular suffer in Rimpelä's view from a lack of "social aptitudes" such as interaction skills. Rimpelä says all the recent school shooting perpetrators have had in common their past problems with social interaction. Räsänen also said on the television programme AStudio that the risk of these kinds of events could be reduced if the distress of young people could be relieved. Read more on this on page 5.

IN THE aftermath of the Hyvinkää murders, public discussion has resumed about why another tragic indiscriminate shooting has occurred in Finland, and how such
mass killings could be prevented. The technology, known as `black boxes', has been supplied to police and security services, and allows for the unrestricted monitoring of internet traffic, phone calls, location data from cell phones and text messages. Rimpelä says the problems of children and young people have not been dealt with sufficiently. Much in the same way that everyone here stands to the right on an escalator, pedestrians generally keep to the appropriate lane, and those who drift into the cyclists' path will quickly correct themselves when encouraged to do so by the ringing of a bell.. Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen (Christian Democrats) says there were very few signs in advance that the Hyvinkää shooting would take place. In the early morning of Saturday 26 May an 18-year-old man shot nine young people indiscriminately in
Hyvinkää, two of whom were killed and seven injured. Public health administration expert at the University of Tampere Matti Rimpelä, who was also interviewed on the programme, in turn predicted that acts like the Hyvinkää shooting will become more common because of the increase in numbers of alienated young men. renewed pressure on the interest rates of Spain and Italy indicates that time is short, and no permanent solutions have been put in place at national or EU levels yet. The Greek outcome was expected because the voters have suffered two years of painful austerity dictated by non-Greeks, to which there is still no end in sight. If the European institutions are given the proper tools needed to manage a common currency, the internal market is developed to its full potential, and member states manage to rid their economies of a chronic dependency on debt and undertake sorely needed structural reforms, then Europe will start a new chapter of prosperity. Already, the European Commission has been given broad powers to control and, if necessary, demand member states to correct their economic policy if there is a risk that these would run up unsustainable debts. It has given renewed energy and new tools to both the promoters of deeper integration towards a federal Europe, as well as to the opponents of such development. The current crisis, however painful its solutions are, will produce a Europe that is much better equipped to tackle economic competition and other global challenges. Articles should be at least 5,000 characters-with-spaces long (maximum length 10,000). While the emphasis in member states has been on cutting the overall level of the budget, less thought has been devoted to how the existing funds should be distributed.

Most importantly, it has laid bare the fact that Europe needs to change, or otherwise fade into global irrelevance and decline, the potential consequences of which are very disturbing indeed. This multifaceted crisis, which was triggered by the outbreak of the global financial crisis in mid-2008, has changed the dynamics of Europe and the European Union, and brought to light new political forces which until now have remained hidden from public view. Popular support for further lending packages is wearing thin in healthier economies. This has given the governments of the crisis countries some breathing space to think about how to make badly-needed reforms. In France, however, the protest against austerity is more ideological, since all attempts at reforming the French economy have been very modest. crisis is the consequence of European states living beyond their means for a long time, which generated enormous amounts of debt. The strategy quite correctly emphasises research and development, innovation and education as top priorities, together with the sustainable use of natural resources. MOST
has been that these priorities have not been matched with funds for their implementation. As the European Commission is looking at what the Union should be doing during the next decade, and how much this will cost, the kneejerk reactions in the cashstrapped member states have been understandably and aggressively restrictive. Reforms are ideally gradual and tempered, but - faced with the prospect of defaults in one or more euro-countries - the rest of the eurozone has demanded immediate fundamental reforms, including huge cuts in public spending, in return for its help. The European Union had already adopted a strategy for growth in 2009, and the European Parliament has been calling for more resources for programmes promoting economic growth for several years now. And, as if that were not enough, even modest austerity measures in the healthier economies have led to turmoil, most recently demonstrated by the fall of the Dutch government this April.
SECOND question is how to prevent anything like this from happening again. More will need to be done to guarantee the integrity of the euro. You can submit your articles to viewpoint@helsinkitimes.fi. For this to be the case though, a lot of adjustments need to be made to the EU budget. Even this will not be enough though. If the EU budget is calibrated towards activities like research and development, strengthening of the internal market, and Europe-wide infrastructure projects, there is great potential for real economic growth. This would provide a boost for struggling economies, while simultaneously creating new markets or improving access to existing ones. Here, much more has been achieved. Helsinki Times reserves the right to accept or reject submissions, as well as to edit or shorten the text. If the financial crisis hadn't triggered the debt crisis, it would have surfaced sooner or later anyway.

lighted the issue during his election campaign. The cultural background of immigrants might also contribute to the problem, he notes, for example regarding perceptions about the role of women. In his speech, Paananen stated the party's ambition to emerge as the largest party in the forthcoming municipal elections. The 48-year-old Paananen is currently the communications director of SAK, the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions. A member of the Social Democrats since 2004, Vainio sits on the Lahti City Council and the Lahti Region Council. Compared with 3.7 per cent of Finnish youths, a much higher proportion of immigrant youths, 20 per cent, are considered marginalised. The dates are also relatively fixed, with no great variation between different regions. On Sunday, Katainen stated to Yle that he views euthanasia as an ethical question rather than a political one. "Our 13-year-old son is at an age when spending time at our summer place is much less appealing than spending time with friends," says Sirpa, a mother of three. For those graduating from upper secondary school, or lukio, school might literally be out, as they ponder their next step, study- and career-wise. HT-STT
Paananen elected as the secretary of the Social Democrats
Reijo Paananen has been elected as the new secretary of the Social Democrats with a landslide victory. Vainio is quoted as saying: "I'm a 25-year-old boy from Lahti, and here I am as a deputy chairman. For immigrants, the integration programmes that already exist could probably function more effectively on this front.
Municipal reform to have a marginal effect in power balance
The government's municipal reform would have a limited influence on the political power balance, a survey commissioned by STT indicates. Many of the immigrants settling in Finland are also young adults without access to the safety and care of a stable home. For universities, vacation is even longer, beginning generally in May and ending in September.
L E H T I K U VA / J U S S I N U K A R I
Eero Vainio is an Administrative Sciences student at the University of Tampere, where he has majored in local and regional leadership since 2007. While teaching in comprehensive school is more or less continuous until the spring festivities, upper secondary school matriculation exams have finished in late March. According to Statistics Finland's estimates, the number of immigrants in Finland will double from today's 170,000 to 340,000 by the year 2020. For instance, there are cases where girls are brought up with the assumption that they are not even supposed to enter the job market, but are to stay at home instead.
Interventions Politicians are waking up to the problem of social exclusion and its implications for the nation as a whole. "His view is that his office allows him to influence attitudes, and he wants to use this so that we would collectively ask ourselves what more we could do for the marginalised and for immigrants," says Myrskylä. In the meantime, summer is here, along with the sun-filled streets of Helsinki and all the leisurely pastimes contained within.

AS 2 JUNE approaches, comprehensive and upper-secondary school students prepare for the much-anticipated summer holiday, the highlight of the year for many. There are significant differences between immigrant groups. Upper secondary school begins at age 16 and finishes at 18. According to Pekka Myrskylä, Development Manager at Statistics Finland, a ma-
jor cause of marginalisation among immigrants is a lack of language skills, particularly Finnish, making entry into the job market hard. The average age of SDP's leadership is now below 32 years old. Summer is the time for sports camps, sailing, and hanging out with friends, and it is also mökki season. Support from the region north of Jyväskylä would, however, remain strong. The National Coalition should not strive to adopt a common stance on the matter, Katainen offered. Therefore unless Finland succeeds in engaging immigrant youth more effectively and incorporating them into society, the extent of youth marginalisation could also grow.
school is also an option after comprehensive school, for those who wish to specialise in a certain profession and enter working life at an earlier age. Shortly after assuming the presidency, Niinistö asked to discuss marginalisation with Myrskylä, who has studied the issue extensively. One way of addressing the issue would be by adopting a model already in use in Denmark, where officials are obliged to contact young people considered at risk of marginalisation. President Sauli Niinistö high-
A Nordic issue Finland is not the only Nordic country that must tackle marginalisation among immigrants. Now we're going to move the party forward."
Kids at a loose end during the holidays
FOR MANY parents, summer can be a tricky time in terms of co-ordinating their children's often longer summer holidays with their own. However, Myrskylä sees the initiative as targeting primarily Finns. "In July, however, when my husband and I have our holiday, most of our son's friends are also out of town, and he must join us at the mökki," she adds with a laugh. For younger children, day care is even more of an issue. They currently number 18,000. For example, while 10.3 per cent of Persian speakers are considered marginalised, the corresponding figure for Arabic speakers is 28.5 per cent. Moreover, marginalisation is often passed on to the next generation. The Greens announced last week they espouse euthanasia, sparking a firm reaction from the Christian Democrats. While the rate of marginalisation among native Finnish youth fell slightly in the 2010s, the overall percentage grew due to the high number of marginalised immigrants.
Difficult backgrounds Another group among whom social exclusion is exceptionally high is youth who have been taken into care. The position of the Social Democrats and the National Coalition, meanwhile, would be enhanced moderately. I would like to hear the various perspectives to support my own thought," Katainen said. "This could be an efficient and cheap way of preventing social exclusion," Myrskylä observes. "This is an extremely profound ethical question. The worst off are youth of Somali and Kurdish origin, of whom 41 and 34 per cent, respectively, can be considered marginalised.
The number of socially excluded immigrants is substantial enough to push up the total percentage of marginalised youth in Finland. Do you think Greece should exit the eurozone?

THOSE 15- to 29-year-olds who have not continued education beyond comprehensive school, do not work and are not taking care of a child of their own are defined as marginalised by Statistics Finland. Finnish language upper secondary and vocational schools resume on 13 August, and Swedish language upper secondary schools on 14 August. One initiative aiming to tackle the problem is the Nuorten yhteiskuntatakuu or Youth Social Guarantee Programme, which comes into force at the beginning of next year. It pledges to provide a job or a study place for unemployed under 25-year olds within three months. However, this is not yet vacation for those who continue cramming for university entrance exams. However, sometimes the difficulty is coming up with activities to fill your kids' days with. For many, this cap is a lifelong accessory worn with pride every May Day. One of the main sources of contention among legislators is whether authority in Egypt should be centred on the parliament or the president. Pace said it was "outrageous" that the issue of a recommendation is being opposed.
Parliamentary versus presidential system Not surprisingly, Islamists, who hold about 70 per cent of the parliament's seats, favour a parliamentary system in which most authority rests with the legislature, and the role of the president is largely ceremonial. A sort of president awaits Egypt
Candidates competing in Egypt's first presidential election since Hosni Mubarak was ousted are vying for a prestigious position whose job description oddly enough has not yet been written. Those authorities lie with the parliament. "We hope that the next constitution will have checks and balances to prevent Egypt from turning into another dictatorship."

IN THE absence of a new constitution, Egypt's next president will begin his tenure without any legal document to adequately define his authorities and responsibilities. Secular and liberal party leaders hoping to counterbalance the Islamist influence in politics have called for a presidential system, albeit with limits to executive power. "The dysfunctional pillars of the Cold War Security Council must be remoulded, and by the Council agreeing to the provision not to use the veto to block action on

lation. "The assembly was supposed to represent all segments of society," explains political science professor Mostafa Kamel El-Sayed, a former assembly member. Hours before it was to be debated and voted in the 193-member General Assembly, the resolution unceremoniously disappeared from the hallowed precincts of the United Nations and probably from the face of the earth. "A president without a constitution is like a marriage without a contract," Mohamed Hassanein Heikal remarked during an interview to Al-Hayat satellite channel. In April, an administrative court suspended the constituent assembly on the grounds that the new body was unrepresentative of the public at large. One proposal is that the president would be responsible for foreign affairs, while the parliament-appointed prime minister would handle domestic policy. The declaration tasked Egypt's elected parliament with forming a 100-member constituent assembly to draft a new constitution ahead of presidential elections. "Instead it became weighed down with Islamists, who would have dominated the discourse at the exclusion of others."

"Nobody wants another pharaoh," says 27-year-old Mohamed Mohieddin, who stood against Mubarak's security forces during last year's uprising. And when a great power and a small power are in conflict, the small power disappears." That's presumably what happened two weeks ago when five of the UN's smallest member states, describing themselves as the "small five" (S5), challenged the five permanent members (P5) of the Security Council, namely the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia, over the misuse of their veto powers. However, problems arose after the Islamist- dominated parliament stacked the assembly with conservatives, prompting many secular and liberal assembly members to pull out in protest. A constitutional declaration passed by a national referendum the following month was intended to serve as a stop-gap meas-

"When two small powers have a dispute," he observed,
Aborted resolution The aborted resolution, couched in delicate diplomatic jargon, "recommended" that the P5 members of the Security Council consider "refraining from using their vetoes on action aimed at preventing or ending genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity". But right from the beginning, the P5 clearly signalled that the General Assembly has no business offering such recommendations to the Security Council.
P5+1 representatives United States, Britain, France, China and Russia (+Germany) at a recent meeting.. major war crimes, genocide and other crimes against humanity would be an indispensable beginning," he said. As former New York Times Bureau Chief Kathleen Teltsch recounts in her 1970 Crosscurrents at Turtle Bay, the Peruvian diplomat went one step further when he added: "When two great powers have a dispute, the United Nations disappears." Mercifully, both the United Nations and the S5 which consists of Costa Rica, Jordan, Liechtenstein, Singapore and Switzerland survived the ordeal last week and lived to tell the tale.

P5 authority called to question Stephen Zunes, professor of politics and international studies at the University of San Francisco, said the withdrawal of the resolution shows the P5 still run things in the world body. The importance of this resolution is that it implicitly challenges not just the Chinese and Russian vetoes regarding repression in Syria, and the Chinese vetoes regarding genocide in Sudan, but US vetoes and related policies to block UN action regarding Israeli war crimes as well, said Zunes who has written extensively on the politics of the Security Council. An unresolved dispute over who will write a new constitution for post-Mubarak Egypt has put the country in the unusual position of voting for a president with undefined authority.
ure until a new charter could be written. The veteran journalist argued that Egypt's elections are pointless and illegitimate without a national charter to specify the president's powers.
According to legal experts, the March 2011 constitutional declaration grants the SCAF executive authorities including the right to declare war until a new constitution is written. The last constitution, written in 1971 and amended over the decades, increasingly concentrated power in the presidency. Another important debate is over the authority and privileges the new constitution will assign to the military, which has resisted calls for civilian oversight. "But they are coming under increasing challenge, their credibility is weakening, and their moral failure is becoming increasingly obvious to an ever larger majority

AT THE height of the Cold War, a Peruvian diplomat, Dr Victor Andres Belaunde, publicly expressed scepticism about the ability of small countries to survive the diplomatic might of the big powers in the world body. Both groups appear to be moving toward a consensus on a semi-presidential system like that of France, where a strong president is balanced by an empowered parliament. "Rival parties want to see how the election turns out before deciding on a constitution that will define the president's role." The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) suspended Egypt's last constitution after Hosni Mubarak was toppled during a popular uprising in February 2011. Nokia's fortunes are ailing, and speculation about the company's future is rife.
Nokia's share price drops below book value
With Nokia's market price so low, rumours are rampant about the future of the company.
DAV I D J . Examine this critically, and see what is happening with changes in net working capital and capital expenditures. If necessary, Nokia could boost cash reserves to give it time to recover by selling assets. All of our politicians acknowledge this to some extent, but reforms are contingent upon elections. Compare the companies with their peers in the industry, as well as with common sense.
ONCE IN MY opinion, the most important metric for a company is their free cash flow. A leveraged buy-out firm could make a bid, but the environment for LBOs, which thrive on cheap capital and a calm economy, is unfavourable. The new Lumia phone has been well-received by critics, but it needs good sales as well as good press. When the market price falls below book value, analysts and investors sometimes begin to think of drastic action: it might be better off for the owners to be acquired, or even to break up the company and sell off the assets. Book value is, however, an accounting value, based upon a company's balance sheet. Nokia is burning through cash at such a rate that concerns have been raised about its continued viability. Be conservative with your estimates. If you are charged 3% for fees, you have effectively strangled yourself.
LOOK FOR those
who like to do their own investing, I would suggest starting with strong companies in stable industries. Sooner or later, we will have to take more responsibility for our financial well-being in the golden years. Some assets, such as short-term investments held as cash equivalents, are normally fairly accurately priced on balance sheets. That means no Nokia. Debt is cheap now, but too much debt could be a death sentence in a major recession. If you can't buy a stock for below its intrinsic value, you probably won't make money on it. afford it. With Nokia's book value at 2.94 euros per share, the mobile phone maker has ignominiously fallen into this category. An economic slowdown will put more strain on public revenues and make the pension gap even more apparent. Do not overpay for a company, no matter how good you think it is

"The results of the research confirm that we are on the right path, and that we have the cure for some of the problems that are visible," Grüne states. "In a way, nobody thought about the whole picture, about how people tend to move to different regions," explains project manager Ann-Jolin Grüne. "Our aim was to get some kind of picture of the potential group interested in Swedish-language integration," states Karin Creutz, one of the co-authors of the report. This has now been published as part of the DiFih project. "If you integrate into one part of the country in Swedish and want to transfer to another, how will it work out so that you can manage in Swedish in a different part of the country?" Upon its completion in 2013, the project's findings will be presented to the Ministry of Education, with the overall aim that Swedish language integration will officially be possible in all larger, bilingual cities.
Documenting the facts
Last autumn, a research study began which for the first time ever surveyed immigrants' attitudes towards Swedish-language integration in the capital region. However, recent changes in the Immigration Law have seen the initiation of the nationwide Osallisena Suomessa Delaktig i Finland or Participating in Finland-project. Combining this information with other sources, the total number was calculated to be just under 2,000 people. "We should be grateful and happy for those who choose Swedish."
Looking ahead
Now that the project has established an understanding of the needs of the immigrant population, the wheels are already in motion regarding official Swedish-language integration possibilities in the capital region. If you are an unemployed immigrant and you want to integrate in Swedish, you can discuss with the employment office whether you can do this integration training programme in Swedish as part of self motivated studies."
Swedish-language integration in figures Of the immigrant population, 10 per cent can speak and write in Swedish, and 21 per cent can understand Swedish. "We Finland-Swedes should do our best to open up and share our networks, and give opportunities to people that come from different backgrounds," Grüne urges. "The idea came from the stories we heard from immigrants in Luckan and Arbis," Grüne explains. According to KELA and other sources, just under 2,000 people have chosen services available in Swedish. They have an openness for learning both languages," Helander observes. Headed by Arbis, the Swedish Adult Education Centre, along with the participation of Luckan, The Finland-Swedish Culture and Information Centre, DiFih is one of four projects around the country seeking to develop integration opportunities in the Swedish language. "At the same time, we also collected experiences about Swedish-language integration, and wanted to get an overall picture of what the situation is now what is working, and what problems there currently are."
Working with fellow researcher Mika Helander, the duo found variations in the exact number of foreigners seeking service in Swedish in the capital region. However, utilising the results of a survey, the report found that of those immigrants who have arrived in the past 5 years, 4,500 people would like to have official services in Swedish. However, this falls short of the results of the survey conducted specifically for this research, which found that 4,500 immigrants who have arrived in the past five years would like to have official services offered in the minority language. 12

The Swedish option
A recent study has found that many immigrants in the capital region see Swedish-language integration as a desired pathway.
Ann-Jolin Grune works as project manager for Delaktig i Finland, which seeks to develop integration opportunities in the Swedish language.
While Finnish Law states that immigrants should have the possibility to integrate in both official languages, in Finnish and in Swedish, up until recently official structures in the capital region have supported integration only in the majority language. "It is important to remember that immigrants do not think about learning solely Finnish or Swedish. They see that Finland is a very law-abiding country, and that everywhere they go officials tell them that they should do as the law says, but when it comes to Swedish, officials don't always follow the Language Law." Titled Via svenska Den svenskspråkiga integrationsvägen (Via Swedish-The Swedish-Language Integration Path), the groundbreaking report highlights the immigrant population's desire to have an official integration pathway available in Swedish in the capital region. "When arriving and choosing a language, it is often emphasised that Swedish is not a good choice and, in a way, many immigrants get the feeling that Swedish is not an option," Creutz says. One of ten official projects in the Helsinki region, Delaktig i Finland i huvudstadsregionen (DiFih), seeks to develop official structures to give people the choice between Swedish and Finnish-language integration. However, the research also revealed uncertainties among immigrants over their degree of welcome in the Finland-Swedish community, with some of them citing difficulties in getting their children accepted into Swedish-speaking day care. According to KELA, The Social Insurance Institution of Finland, 1,225 of these foreigners are registered as Swedish speakers. "Immigrants are a bit confused by the attitudes of Finnish-speaking Finns. "We are commencing an integration programme in Swedish that starts in September this year and continues until 31 May 2013. 54 per cent of the immigrant population would be interested in learning both of Finland's official languages.
Immigrants are keen to learn both Finnish and Swedish, says researcher Mika Helander.
Researcher Karin Creutz collected experiences about Swedish-language integration.. Creutz's and Helander's findings also indicated that a maze of difficulties exists for immigrants seeking to integrate in Swedish in the Helsinki region. "Authorities think that it is a question of either/or, that the immigration pathway would be lengthened in Swedish, and that people choosing this pathway would be somehow separated from the majority of society. Made up of ten larger projects from around the country with the common aim of facilitating immigration processes, each of these also include a number of regionally specific projects. We found that 54 per cent of immigrants living here would be interested in learning both official languages." According to the research, Swedish, due to its Germanic roots, is perceived to be easier to pick up than Finnish for the majority of immigrants, and many immigrants also see the acquisition of Swedish as an important tool for advancing their professional careers.
"The immigrants themselves think that the integration threshold is lower via Swedish, as they learn the language quicker, which can be used for understanding documents and different issues," Helander states. "This has led to various problems for those who have stressed that they need Swedish in their daily lives." Contrary to the previously held belief, the report also found that many immigrants see integrating in Swedish as merely a stepping-stone to integrating into the whole of Finnish society, and not as a means of confining themselves to a Swedish-speaking life

e! Dive into Underwater Adventur. Remember to use a bike lock, and to park your bike in public areas where numerous other cyclists have done the same. While the decision is left to individual cyclists, having fallen off my bike and heard the grinding noise of my helmet scraping along the asphalt as I slid downhill, I strongly recommend their use. Surprisingly for such a conscientious community, the use of helmets is not compulsory in Finland. HELSINKI TIMES

Back then more people lived in Suomenlinna than in the whole of Helsinki. There is an abundance of hotels, shops, restaurants and cafes, and Lahti's compact size makes it easy to get around. Since then, Lahti has weathered war and economic upheavals. Suomenlinna is not merely a fortress, it is also an ideal place for a picnic and a dip in the sea. This Finnish Test Match the first of its kind to be played in the country will be an opportunity for spec-
tators to see the game in its original format, with more emphasis placed on patience, skill and endurance than in the quicker, more modern versions of the game. For literary types, the Writers' Reunion and the Poetry Marathon open the summer season in alternate years, at-
tracting writers from all over the world to mingle and find inspiration. In Finland?

Suomenlinna
The Suomenlinna fortress is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, the reality is that the game continually attracts a huge number of new players, clubs and international sides and is now the second most played sport in the world. In many former British colonies, such as India and Pakistan, it is far and away the most popular sport, while new countries on the cricketing scene, including The Netherlands and Canada, are benefitting from newer, audience-friendly versions of the game and an ever-expanding international calendar.
· The FCA (Finnish Cricket Association) was established in 1999 and has member clubs all over Finland. Although, as mentioned, both sides normally bat twice, the match will be unique in that both teams will play as many innings as they can between 11 am and 7 pm the following day. Regular bus and train services connect it to the capital as well as to other cities, and it is only an hour's drive from Helsinki along a major motorway. Within Europe, cricket has a somewhat unfair reputation of being a slow, cumbersome game played only by upper-class men and always accompanied by Pimms and
cucumber sandwiches. It became even more important with the arrival of the railroad and the Russians in the 19th century. www.suomenlinna.fi/en

The National Cricket Ground, which is visible from the main road as well as the surrounding area, will undoubtedly lend itself to a superb cricket match, as well as ensuring that there will be a little slice of cricket tradition and pomp on the edge of the Finnish capital.
Song and ski Lahti is perhaps most famous for the award-winning Lahti Symphony Orchestra, which plays in the Sibelius Hall. Even a destructive fire in 1877 that leveled the town did not limit its prospects, but prompted a complete renewal of the town plan. Cementing the city's reputation as a creative hub is The Institute of Design, alma mater to many established arts figures. In the past ten years, the game has undergone a major rebranding with the introduction of the twenty20 format of the game, which, as the name suggests, is played over a combined 40 overs and therefore a much shorter timeframe. · Take in the sublime Päijänne National Park during the Kelvenne Midnight Kayak Run on 6 July, or cheer your team to victory at the Mölkky World Championship, a Finnish game of wooden skittles, on 18-19 August.. Lahti tidbits · Long gone are the days when Lahti was referred to as the 'Chicago of Finland', for alleged links to organized crime. Construction of the fortress began during the Swedish era of the 18th century, and it was built mainly by convicts and soldiers. This elegant concert venue with excellent acoustics was the largest wooden structure built in Finland for a hundred years. Empire Cricket Club and SKK (Stadin Krikettikerho) are both relatively new in cricketing terms having been established in 2003 and 1993 respectively but the origins of the game in Finland can be traced back to the 1960s. Suomenlinna ferry timetables can be found online. For more culture-oriented people, Suomenlinna also offers museums, a beautiful church situated in the middle of the main island, and enjoyable stage productions during the summer. The site of the oldest known human habitation in Finland, it first appears in history as early as 1445. There are also attractions for the children, including the toy museum and guided tours led by historical characters. Added to this have been high profile competitions such as the Indian Premier League, which is now a multi-million euro enterprise. Even then, it was already a vital trade link, situated on the trade route between Hämeenlinna and Vyborg. legend Suzanne Vega is set to play Finlandia Hall this Sunday 3 June, in what promises to be a warm and intimate gig, as part of her current European tour which runs through to July. However, such an exciting proposal eventually did prove to be a bit too good to be true. Encouraged by the success, Csoszánszki already has a next exhibition mapped out, this time consisting of works by children attending her recycled crafts workshops. The pint-sized popstar will perform as part of the School's Out concert, which will also feature rapper Puhuva Kone (The Talking Machine). If Scott does hit this one out of the park, then be sure to keep an eye out in the near future for his hotly rumoured sequel to Blade Runner (1982). Whatever the final word is, be prepared for one of the most hotly anticipated films in some time, with the ambiguity of its Alien connection proving a sure-fire way to attract attention. The social-consciousness of Vega's songs perhaps stems from her Amnesty International activities and her work with The Save Darfur Coalition. Csoszánszki runs an eco-consultancy office in Ekopuoti with her colleague and fellow countrywoman Edina Rudner. Of course things go pearshaped and our heroes, led by Lisbeth Salander herself, Noomi Rapace, find themselves having to fight to save our collective future. 4, Songs of Family which came out this May. It's wonderful to work with like-minded, creative people; we learn something new from each other every time. Parallel to my studies, I started working with bands and arranging my own events. He helped me a lot in understanding Finnish culture and people. My favourite free-time activity was always visiting concerts and supporting bands and I never go anywhere without my mp3 player. Frankly, this journey wasn't very well planned. After giving myself

some time to adjust, I quickly realised that I would not get far without a good education and knowledge of Finnish. "And what does a band manager do?" he asked. I have to admit, the Finnish way is much closer to my heart. They must have liked my answer, as I am a secondyear student at HAAGA-HELIA Porvoo Campus now.
Studying there was very challenging at the beginning, but also inspiring. The Forex desk at Helsinki Central Railway Station is open Mon-Sun 8-21. I left my family, my friends and the University of Economics behind. I have learned to love Finland. The currency exchange counter at the harbour in Katajanokka, Helsinki is open every day (Mon-Sat 10-11:30, 1617:30 and 19:30-21:15, Sun 10-11:30, 16-17:30 and 6:30-8). Last autumn I was chosen for the Culture Export Management Specialisation Programme, which is a great opportunity. But during this time I have experienced more things than ever before. Banks are usually open Mon-Fri 9:15-16:15 except for the bank at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, which is open 6-22 daily. Even in -30 degrees.

Next week... Our team is quite international, yet our strengths are very well balanced. My achievements are not only shown in grades, but also in team evaluations. We have a very different education system in Hungary, which is almost completely theory-based, individual learning, with lots of reading and exams. Grocery stores. All I knew was that I was striving for a fresh start, to help me figure out who I am and what I really want out of life. In our Travel themed issue, we dive into the imperial splendour of St. The only person waiting for me was my Finnish fiancé, who I eventually moved in with. I never thought I could be culture-shocked inside the borders of Europe, but Finland made me realise that it's possible. And most importantly, I found what I was looking for: a dream to follow, and a good reason to get through the day. Petersburg. HELSINKI TIMES

Banks and Bureaux de Change. I still remember how the teacher at the entrance exam raised his eyebrows when I answered his question about my dream profession. See www.forex.fi for more information. Most grocery stores are open Mon-Fri 7-21, Sat 7-18 and Sun 12-21. It's hard work but valuable real-life experience at the same time. The three years I have spent in Finland haven't exactly been easy. Naturally, I am most excited when it comes to music, but it's very important for me to broaden my horizons to different fields as well. We work with real companies and complete tasks commissioned by them (sales, marketing, events, research, you name it). I have admired Finnish and Scandinavian rock music since I was 14. We listen to guest lecturers from music, theatre and other cultural in-
dustries, and have regular theatre visits and projects with Svenska Teatern. The food, the weather, the environment, the people and their habits, everything was new. BOXING & KICK BOXING
