Made in Poland
2009 sees the 20th anniversary of the collapse of communism in Poland and other Central and Eastern European countries.
THIS YEAR brings the 20th anniversary of the Autumn of Nations, which brought the fall of the totalitarian regime to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The negotiations also opened the way for the peaceful transition from Communist regime to democracy not only in Poland, but also in other Communist countries in Europe. The June elections and the formation of the first non-Communist government of Tadeusz Mazowiecki in Poland, sparked a series of historical transformations in other countries of Central and Eastern Europe: in Hungary, in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, the so-called Baltic Chain, on 23 August; in German Democratic Republic, the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November; Czechoslovakia, the Velvet Revolution in November; in Bulgaria, Romania and Albania. One of the leaders of the democratic opposition prof. The round-table negotiations took place in Warsaw, from 6 February to 4 April, 1989. km Population: 38.1 million Capital: Warsaw, population 1.7 million President: Lech Kaczyski Prime Minister: Donald Tusk Member of: EU, NATO, United Nations, W TO, OECD and others
June 1989 established the first non-communist government in this part of Europe, in August 1989, led by Tadeusz Mazowiecki. The election results, recorded in realtime figures, were a turning point in the perception of the future of Europe because rather than
dealing in haphazard speculation they enabled an analysis of the facts". Celebrating this anniversary it is good to remember that it all started in Poland with the strike in a GdaÐsk shipyard in August 1980 and led to the formation of the SolidarnoÐÐ movement headed by Lech Walsa. Among the opposition activists were: Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Bronislaw Geremek, Adam Michnik,
Jacek KuroÐ, Zbigniew Bujak, Wladyslaw Frasyniuk, Józef Ðlisz. In addition, partially free parliamentary elections on 4

As a result of the round-table negotiations, the SolidarnoÐÐ trade union was legalised, communists had said that they would respect freedom of speech and judiciary independence. The opposition were represented by people who had been chaired by Lech WalÐsa, mostly affiliated with SolidarnoÐÐ. The caption reads: "High noon, 4 June 1989".
Representatives of the communist authorities and the democratic opposition took part in the Round Table negotiations held from 6 February to 4 April 1989.
Tadeusz Mazowiecki, the first non-communist prime minister of Poland after World War II.
THIS PAGE IS PROVIDED BY THE EMBASSY OF POLAND. A date was set for partially free elections to the Sejm and completely free elections to the Senate. The government had to initiate the discussion with the banned trade union SolidarnoÐÐ and other opposition groups to avoid growing social unrest caused by the unstable economic and political situation in Poland. The round-table negotiations, considered to be a milestone in the collapse of communist power in Poland, also paved the way for democratic changes in other Eastern states making the fall of the Berlin Wall possible. The June elections proved what was already obvious but empirically unconfirmed that the Communists have no back-up, that they remain in authority only thanks to historical inertia, supported by the illusion of power. The parliamentary elections of 4 June 1989 brought a landslide victory to SolidarnoÐÐ: 99 per cent of the seats in
the Senate and 35 per cent of all possible seats in Sejm
