The Finnish police's National Bureau of Investigation estimate that membership is around 60-70 members, led by a six-man council, with two representatives from each original gang. The prosecution alleged that the gang members used their status and image as bikers to intimidate victims into handing over money for safeguarding their business or person. The top ten ranking countries, or those with the lowest scores in the trouble indicators are Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, and Austria. The defendants' ages ranged from 19 to 37. Currently two members of the gang are awaiting trial for murder both deny the charges.
The United Brotherhood were in the news in February this year when one of their members, Juha Vähäsarja a `debt collector' for the gang entered a pizzeria in the city, shooting one worker dead and injuring another. During the operation four men, aged between 35 and 43, were arrested. All were natives of Oulu or the surrounding district and were sentenced last week at Oulu District Court. "As a generator of global standards, a discussion forum and in executing or mandating activities for maintaining international security, the UN is indispensable," adding that the UN is also a vital forum for enforcing the global role of the EU: the very role that the EU should seize more vigorously in the UN, consistently backed up by Finland. Though Japan continues to rank among the best seven per cent of countries, Japan's near-record worsening on the FSI demonstrates how susceptible even the most stable of nations are to sudden shocks. SUMMER GUIDE
Take trip to a lighthouse island The southern coast of Finland is dotted by unique, old lighthouses that are open for visitors for a daytrip or an overnight stay. Neighbours Sweden and Denmark take second and third best spots respectively. Yet this would not be an alternative to working within the EU or in international organisations
I raised three sons who all, like myself, did their service in the IDF and are serving also as reserve soldiers. At an early stage of my diplomatic career I learned you never answer hypothetical questions. It's a sensitive issue, especially in a country which was established by refugees and immigrants from around the world, who came and established their society and their country. Just now, in these days, we celebrate 50 years of the first Finns volunteering to kibbutzim in Israel. In this respect I can only give a very simple clear and longstanding answer that says, `Israel will not be the first country to introduce nuclear weapons into this region.' Is that the end of that answer. There is an old Jewish saying; "After the destruction of the second temple, the ability to prophesize was only given to the fools." So I'll be careful about giving a prognosis. What about the situation with the rebels in Syria. It is interesting that a discussion in a democratic society about how to face a clear threat to its existence is being described as hawkish. Others visit Israel as tourists and are impressed ficult neighbourhood and in a situation where after more than 64 years since the establishment of our state we have to defend our mere existence on a daily basis. It has been suggested recently by the Minister for International Development, Heidi Hautala, and Tarja Kantola, aide to Minister for Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja to change the labelling of products from the Occupied Territories which are currently labelled Produce of Israel. There are a lot of friendship groups between the two countries. It does not get the right attention from the international community. We all know that we have to protect our country, because even 64 years after its establishment there are those who refuse to accept Israel's right to exist and others who call for its destruction. First of all, this is a singling out of Israel. What is the official Israeli policy concerning this. We are but the small Satan; the big Satan is the US. I believe that by now, even the optimists who coined the expression "Arab Spring" know that it is a very strong storm. I think this can be further developed. On the other hand, Arab countries refuse to accept our right to exist as a Jewish state. Thousands of Finns have experienced Israel as volunteers in Israel's Kibbutzim, and had the opportunity to see the true situation "on the ground". Does your Embassy keep in contact with these groups. Many countries have this situation and none have perfect solutions to it, neither Italy, nor France, nor Belgium, nor Austria. Let's remember one thing; the one who poses a threat in a very clear way is the Iranian side. As regards nuclear capability, Israel is not a signatory of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). This country uses its money and power to equip, train and give orders to proxies in the region one being Hamas, the other Hezbollah and use them as a threat against Israel. There is no other case, however where the demand for separate labelling is Being made. Israel is not the only country in world with territorial disputes. The closer you are to a burning fire, the more you feel the heat. What happens in Syria is of great concern to us. I believe there are a lot of misunderstanding and misconceptions in this question. The relationship is basically very good. We have entities that are active on our northern border that are proxies of other powers in our region. There is a dispute between us and the Palestinians, which should be solved by direct negotiations.. On a humanitarian basis, Israel is sad about the loss of lives in Syria. I believe there could be assistance from a third party to bring sides together. Nevertheless no demand for separate labelling of products is being raised. You don't know who they are, what their aim is. These were attacks on the security of Israel, and on the peace with. Iran threatens the Gulf States, southern Europe, and peace and stability in our region - with or without nuclear weapons. First of all the number of illegal immigrants, or infiltrators, is huge. As a country founded by refugees, should there not perhaps be a better understanding of the plight of these people in Israel. Even the Egyptians are trying to fight terrorist organisations based in Sinai. Why not. To my regret the Palestinian side avoids negotiations and expects to get Israeli concessions without having to compromise. I would like to see stronger commercial and economic ties. We have to be prepared along our northern border to every development. What might that bring. There has been much talk lately about Israel's possible reaction also to Iran, and its nuclear programme. The issue must be `agreed upon' by both sides, not `imposed on' the sides from the outside. They did not accept the UN resolution of 1947 establishing Jewish and Arab states in the former mandate of Palestine and they do not accept basically the right of Israel to exist to this day. Are there fears that Hezbollah may become more active in the north, and rebel factions increase activity to the south. Is there concern in Israel that the UN stance on the Occupied Territories would lead to a bias in any dealings or assistance. I was born in this country. In Finland, the strongest supporters of Israeli annexation of Judea and Samaria (West Bank) are fundamentally oriented Christian groups which believe that Jews must convert to Christianity before the end of times. There are countries which are signatories of the NPT some of whom are near neighbours, some not so near neighbours who don't adhere to NPT. Before assuming his post as Israel's ambassador to Finland, in October 2011, he served as Diplomatic Advisor to the Knesset, Israel's Parliament.
Israel `Living in a difficult neighbourhood'
Ambassador Dan Ashbel talks to Helsinki Times about Israel's border issues, changing times in the Middle East and why Israel makes the wrong headlines.
How are Finnish-Israeli relations. We cannot and will not play a role in the domestic situation in Syria. It is the responsibility of officials to carry out the policy of the government. Such decisions are the prerogative of an elected government. The relative calm of Israel's borders with Syria, along the Golan Heights, and with Egypt, in the Sinai, may be under threat. If you label a product as coming from the Occupied Territory of Palestine, you are making the negotiations futile, and actually predetermine their outcome. There is a Mediterranean county that has a similar agreement with the EU and is involved in a territorial dispute. Even now, with their ballistic missile capabilities, they threaten southern Europe. The other problem is the changes in our region. Is that what those people want. In Israel there are NGOs which are deeply involved in protecting immigrants' rights, on the other hand it is a problem when you get 6,000 people a month crossing the border from Egypt. With regards to Syrian rebels or Hezbollah acquiring chemical weapons, will Israel practice a first strike policy. I want to see my grandchildren grow up without a threat to their lives and to the existence of their state. Nor even Finland, which does not suffer too much from illegal immigrants. There is nothing I wish for more than peace for all nations and people in our region. Israel has initiated and signed agreements with the Palestinians with the aim of solving the territorial dispute between us. It has been agreed that the issue of the settlements will be discussed by what they see that often stands in contrast to Israel's image in the media. On the one hand respected members of the military and intelligence community in Israel have said that a pre-emptive strike wouldbe unwise, while members of government have taken a more hawkish line and suggest attacking Iran. It is not an Israeli problem, not only, it is an international problem. With good will and understanding we can reach that goal.
Cheating has little to do with personal gain and everything to do with self-perception.
at the final phase of the negotiations. Sixteen Egyptian soldiers were simply slaughtered... Every country's government has a responsibility to protect its civilian population this is also the obligation of the government of Israel and it will do so. Israel has assisted tens of thousands of illegal immigrants. Since we are a democracy it is the responsibility of the government and the PM to make the decision. How does the Israeli government view this issue. 2

HELSINKI TIMES
Dan Ashbel is a career diplomat with over 36 years of experience with the Israeli diplomatic corp. That's the end of that answer. All societies must cope. The rest of the world makes it too easy by saying this is an Israeli problem. I and many Israelis value their support and their true friendship. What do we have in say 20 years, one or two states or a third option. It's no surprise that in Israel people are more concerned than in Finland. Our PM, Benjamin Netanyahu, has made no decision yet. By now I have four grandchildren. How do you see the future of Israel in the region. Do you think it is compatible with international law to further extend Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories (West Bank). Israel is not the only, or major, target of the regime in Iran. Rockets were launched from the Sinai Peninsula at the Israeli civilian population. Let's first of all say something very simple; we live in a difEgypt and on Egypt itself. Hezbollah is a proxy of Iran. Israel has also been in the news lately in relation to the mass deportation of African illegal immigrants to their country of origin. Yes, we have signed peace agreements with two neighbours, Egypt and Jordan which are very important. Many come from countries which either don't recognise Israel, or are in a state of war with Israel which causes an additional problem. The question is how to cope. Is there a conflict in policy thinking. On the other hand it is very important to remember that there is a power in this region that has stated time and time again that it wants to wipe Israel of the map. I believe that and I hope that agreements signed between sovereign states will stand, also when governments change and, as it looks by now, this is also the intention of Egypt's new administration. I am very happy that there are large groups in Finland who show understanding to and support for the state of Israel. It has put all infidels as a target. Even European countries are involved in territorial disputes. this is the area we live in. Is it perhaps related to the UN, the EU and International Court of Human Justice regarding Israel as an occupying power in these areas. There is a long history of good relations, on all levels; governmental, parliamentary and public relations. How do you know those who cross aren't involved in this. We just last week experienced an attempt to attack Israel from Egypt which began with an attack on Egypt soldiers by Muslim extremists. I don't want to go into international issues of occupied territories, even occupation of the territory of a member state of the EU
"We already have pre-employment training funds, which can be redirected from course-format studies to the training of apprentices. Vettenterä still claims that the work is mostly based on true events, even though details have been fabricated. We definitely need new policies regarding this."
According to Jyrki Katainen, the problem with current apprenticeship training is that aspiring truck drivers, for example, have to be paid the wages of a mature, skilled worker.
Prime Minister Katainen met with student representatives at Oulu market square as part of ministerial summer meeting.
Häkämies would increase support for employers Minister for Economic Affairs Jyri Häkämies (National Coalition Party) took a gentler approach at the press conference, saying that raising the amount of support for employers organizing apprenticeship training could be considered. She also claims that although she was in possession of Elisa's diary, she does not have it anymore. She has also admitted that the date of death was false. "The true part about Elisa is that a 15-year-old has killed herself due to bullying," Vettenterä stated in a police interview. Vettenterä says that she is not surprised by the results of the investigation, and hopes that the blog relating to Elisa will be made public again. But it suits particularly those who want to learn by doing," said Risikko, who has previously served as vice-rector of a university of applied sciences. Minister Jyrki Katainen believes that developing apprenticeship training may be the way to reduce youth unemployment. The truthfulness of the story was initially called in-
to question by the Helsingin sanomat supplement Kuukausiliite, which claimed that no 14- to 16-year-old girl was reported dead on the day of Elisa's alleged death. "It would encourage companies to take on apprentices," Häkämies said. Her book was allegedly based on Elisa's diary entries and a blog maintained by her parents and the author. Starting from 2014 the reduction will be 31 million euros. "It's not quite that simple. There is no sense in this. The wage subsidy would be paid directly to the young person, rather than the employer. Katainen said, "The problem is that when a young person wants to learn to become a truck driver, or eventually even an entrepreneur, this unskilled youth, however willing to learn, still has to be paid the wages of a mature, skilled worker. The opposition immediately took note of Katainen's proposal. Currently, apprentices are paid according to the collective agreement during their work periods. However, there are some young people for whom on-the-job learning is betL E H T I K U VA / S A R I GU S TA F S S O N
ter than going for further studies. Mikko Simolinna, president of the Federation of Finnish Enterprises, proposed a change in apprenticeship policy, which would allow young persons to be paid lower wages for two years, but at a lower tax rate. Changing the apprenticeship system was one of Katainen's proposals, which he wants to address in government's budgetary process for the end of August, in a bid to create new jobs.

Fiskars, famous for their orange-handled scissors, are considered by Finns to be reliable and producers of high-quality goods.
I wrote a column entitled The Facebook bubble about the extreme valuation of the social network. Several companies' good corporate responsibility image contributed to their reputation. At the May 2012 IPO, it shot up to about $105 billion. "In the Corporate Reputation and Responsibility survey conducted by TNS Gallup in 2011, Stockmann was rated as the company with the best reputation in the retail sector in Finland," says Stockmann CEO Hannu Penttilä in the company's first quarter report. "We have responded to this increased demand by providing our stakeholders with products and services that suit a responsible lifestyle. The meals consisted of locally produced, low-carbon ingredients. No, I think at the moment Facebook is performing well as a company. But companies need to time it right, and Facebook may have waited too long. I was rather cynical, and predicted: "Some day in the future the value of Facebook will be more realistic (probably as the result of a panic, which is how it normally happens)..."
FACEBOOK'S valuation was at $50 billion when I wrote that column. They say Finns' awareness of corporate responsibility has increased in Finland, and companies are therefore challenged to act responsibly. OP-Pohjola earned top marks in banking, Paulig in food, Alko in retail, and KONE in industry. Most recently, a lock-up period for some investors expired, and they rushed to sell, pushing the valuation down to $48 billion and half of what it used to be. That is expensive when you consider that you could get a stable earner, like a utility, for example, at almost one tenth the price and one twentieth the worry. Since then, the price has collapsed. Fazer says consumers' interest in corporate responsibility has risen and that they have made a concerted effort to be a good corporate citizen. If you guessed firms involved with chocolate or scissors, you were right.

Greek euro exit manageable, rules ECB-executive
A Greek exit from the eurozone would be manageable, but very costly to Greece, Europe and Germany, estimated Jörg Asmussen, a member of the executive board of the European Central Bank, in a Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper interview on Monday. For example, a recently concluded programme was for the Finnish mechanical industry, which sought to help companies in that field to compete globally. "The focus areas are projects lasting about one or two years with budgets of about one to two million euros." Fancy exploring the Helsinki archipelago with a little bit of power beneath you. Before being automated, the lighthouses used to be looked after by lighthouse keepers who lived at the reefs around the year, often with their families. has done its share in painting a starkly beautiful image of life at a lighthouse island, and this is perhaps why these lonely giants of the sea continue to fascinate so many. The jet skis can be brought to a location of your choice after which a tour of the beautiful Helsinki archipelago will take place. The shortest sea route to Bengtskär goes through beautiful archipelago from Kasnäs and takes about an hour, but the lighthouse island can also be reached with a ferry from Hanko or Turku. The easiest way to catch one of these wild rides is to head for the Brändö Seglare Yacht Club in Helsinki, although they are able to pick you up and drop you off at almost any pier in the Helsinki area. Large parts of the picturesque island used to be occupied by the defence forces, but now most parts of the island are open for visitors and apart the lighthouse, the island also has a hotel, a shop and a post office. Standing alone on a reef at the mercy of unpredictable moods of the Baltic Sea, these lighthouses used to guide small fishing vessels and cargo ships alike safely to harbour and send comforting flashes of light across the dark nights at the sea. Well, if you are in fact a speed-loving maniac, or just looking for some good old excitement, the Burn Out City's Jet Ski Safari might just be the thing for you. If looking for an authentic taste of life at a lighthouse island, you also have the option of renting the traditional sauna or even spending the night in the lighthouse suite at the second floor from the beginning of July until late September.
Söderskär Söderskär lies in the outer archipelago of Porvoo, against the open sea and is dominated by a 150-yearold lighthouse. Bengtskär is open for visitors between June and September and apart from guided tours and a comfortable café, there is also a chance to spend the night in one of the lighthouse keeper's rooms or rent a conference room.
ENTERTAINMENT
Utö A small island in the archipelago of the Baltic Sea, Utö is the southernmost year-round inhabited island in Finland. Now that all of the lighthouses being automated, and some even having retired from their role as sailor's guardians, they still remain the charm and character they have had for decades

It is most often eaten sweetened, either simply mashed with sugar or as jam, and is the traditional accompaniment to the classic Finnish dish of sautéed reindeer. Another treasure of the forest is the chanterelle. It was founded in 1558 by Duke John, later King Johan III of Sweden, as a more navigable harbour on the Kokemäenjoki river in Satakunta than the existing towns of Kokemäki and Ulvila. So if you find yourself wanting a change of pace, look no further than Pori, the city that dances to its very own, very funky rhythms.

PORI
Pori is located in western Finland, about 250km from Helsinki.
The Pori church registry office, built in 1893, is typical of buildings adjacent to Kokemäenjoki river.. Every year, some people fall dangerously ill from eating the wrong types of mushrooms. With the vast quantity of berries available in the forest, the only practical limit to the harvest is manpower. In response to their entreaties, the duke ordered them to migrate to Pori to form the economic and social base of the new settlement. The most commercially important berry in Finland is the lingonberry, which is a small red fruit that grows in clusters and has a very tart
flavour. While berry-picking is a fun and relaxed leisure activity, picking for commercial sale is arduous. 050 452 2393, e-mail: hanna.kinnunen@familiaclub.fi
Mushrooms Mushroom picking requires more care and attention than berry picking. Picking berries is generally safe, as edible berries are easy to recognise. Companies have resorted to paying people to do so, and even importing immigrant labour. Mushrooms are gathered by carefully twisting the stem off the ground, leaving the whole fungus intact. This yellow, funnel-shaped mushroom is very popular for its fruity scent. For mushroom hunting, you will need roomy, airy baskets ideally, one for each different type of mushroom you gather, and never of plastic material. Its bushes are found in shady, damp places, bearing fruit that turn dark blue when ripe. One of the founding organisers, Jyrki Kangas, is known as Mr Pori Jazz, and has had a hand in every one of the 46 instalments of the event. One thing all berries have in common is nutritional value. All are quite nutritious, being especially rich in minerals. Most of the berries are eaten by wild animals, or fall to the ground to fertilise the soil. It is now available widely throughout Finland from local grillikioski, but of course true aficionados will tell you that the real thing can only be had from Pori itself.
Music and more Ask the average Pekka on the street about Pori, and they'll likely answer with one of two things. Buses and trains take about 3 and half hours to get there, and there are as many as six 45-minute flights daily to and from Helsinki. So grab your basket and take your pick!
EVERY city in the world has its own pace its own way of doing things and Pori is proud to go its own way in many matters. There are many species of edible mushrooms, but also several types that are poisonous. A mushroom knife with its attached brush is then used to trim and clean the mushroom. They are rich in fibre and many vitamins and minerals. It currently draws well over 100,000 visitors annually with its wide-ranging programme, featuring the musical talents of such stars as Norah Jones, Miles Davis, Bobby McFerrin and Paul Anka. Every summer and autumn, the forest becomes rich with many varieties of edible berries and mushrooms. The first is the annual Pori Jazz festival, first held in 1966. It is the traditional accompaniment to leipäjuusto, or bread-cheese, which is usually eaten warm with cloudberry jam. Visit us online for more information: www.familiaclub.fi /duo_homepage

The bourgeoisie of Ulvila had been forcibly resettled in Helsinki after the decline of their city, but unsurprisingly were unhappy there. You will learn a lot about the natural environment around you, appreciate the effort required to collect food, and have a tasty treat at the end of the day. Berry and mushroom picking are great ways to spend a day in the forest. It is also a rich source of food. It provides shelter, refuge and comfort for the spirit. It has a large brown cap with white flesh, and is good from June to the end of September. Chanterelles are best when eaten immediately after they are gathered, but they also keep well in the refrigerator, and can be dried, frozen or brined. Just under 250 kilometres from Helsinki, Pori is easily accessible by road and rail. You should only eat mushrooms that you have definitely identified as safe to eat. There are many other types of edible mushroom, which an experienced guide will be able to find and show you. From humble beginnings, Pori Jazz has grown into one of the biggest music festivals of any sort in the Nordic region. This being Finland, it is also home to a rich variety of waterfowl and waders. Engel, and the Juselius Mausoleum, which used to feature frescos by Pori native Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Pori is now capital of the Satakunta region, and while shipbuilding is still a vital part of its economy, it has diversified into metals, electronics, chemicals, information technology and energy, as well as processing 12 per cent of all Finnish overseas transport.
a misnomer. They are good as they are, with milk and a little sugar, in jam, or baked into a pie. Helsinki may have electronica and hip-hop, central Finland its tango traditions, and Rovaniemi its monster metal, but Pori defines its identity through the complex and subtle time signatures of jazz. The eclectic mix of the festival is one of its draws so much so that the "jazz" part of its name is now something of
Sand and sea Yyteri beach offers greater charms than the local nosh. It features a thick wodge of garlicky hunter sausage between slices of white wheat toast with raw onion, pickles, mustard and ketchup. 500 million kilograms of berries ripen every year, and only a small fraction is harvested for human consumption. As a result, berries have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Six glorious kilometres of sandy dunes host some of the best sunbathing, swimming and windsurfing areas in Finland, and indeed northern Europe. Pori is short for Swedish Björneborg, or Bear Castle. While most of the workers are Russian, more than 2000 Thai workers come to Finland each year during the berry season.

One type of berry that is distinctive to Finland is lakka, or cloudberry. Blueberries tend to be sweeter, softer and juicier than lingonberries, with a full, complex taste. These rules help ensure that the forest remains unspoiled, so that we can enjoy the beautiful natural environment of Finland for generations to come.
Modern berry-pickers make the job easier and are ideal for mustikka (bilberry or blueberry) and puolukka (lingonberry).
Berries There are 37 edible species of berry in Finland. You must also refrain from disturbing wildlife or harming the forest. It grows abundantly in the bogs of Lapland, producing bright yellow-orange fruit with an unusual sweet-and-sour taste. Yet it goes from strength to strength, and is definitely a high point of the Finnish summer season. Meaty and flavourful, it is cooked fresh in butter, or sliced and dried to intensify its taste for use in soups and stews. Berry picking is a simple activity that does not require many tools. freely in the countryside, and pick wild berries, mushrooms and flowers, as long as they obey some commonsense rules that help to maintain the environment and keep it pleasant for landowners and passers-by alike. Its season lasts from late June to the end of September. You can even take a mushroom identification course. The originals have since been lost, but have been replaced with works by the artist's son, Jorma, in the same style. Best of all, this bounty can be harvested by anyone.
Everyman's rights Jokamiehenoikeudet, or everyman's rights, are part of the traditional relationship between the people and the land, and are both strongly protected and commonly used. You are allowed to enter the forest and pick as many berries and mushrooms as you wish, if you do not disturb other people or damage property. Washing the berries before you eat them is also a good idea, although snacking
on a few as you go will not do you any harm. You must not deface trees or bushes, light open fires, or leave litter behind. This autumn's programme includes an open lecture series, volunteering opportunities, Mother & Baby groups and online chats. In the compact city centre are some lesser-known gems of Finnish architecture, including the city hall, the 19th century Old Courthouse by C.L. The season for lingonberries lasts from the end of August until the beginning of October, and they can be found throughout Finland. If you are collecting a lot of berries, you might want to invest in a special scoop designed for the purpose, but otherwise all you need are your hands and a container, such as a plastic bucket or box. The cep is a common mushroom that is easy to find and identify. As for the other thing that Pori is well known for: the Porilainen, a sandwich that owes its name to an execrable pun with hampurilainen, or hamburger. It is best to pick berries that are growing away from roads to avoid pollution. 14

All types of work undertaken, no job too big or too small!
Our broad selection of regenerating, stress-removing and revitalizing treatments has been very well received in Finland. Dial 112. Both are open Mon-Fri 8-18 and Sat 8-16 but are closed on Sundays. Most hotels as well as the Helsinki Tourist Office and Helsinki's General Post Office have a computer terminal. The need for a car led me to test different cars at a car dealer and this without any ID requirement, you could take
the car for a ride and nobody would ever know who exactly borrowed the car! Totally impossible where I come from. The lack of socialisation due to bitter climate (Finnish people are very stay-at-home people, enjoying the warmth of their excellently insulated homes) was not my biggest cultural difference shock. Post Offices. Grocery stores in the Helsinki Central Railway Station tunnel are open Mon-Sat 7-22 and Sun 10-22. Despite its scary first approach, I should admit now that there is a strong logic behind it, closely linked to Finnish behavior and continuous path to efficiency. The big city girl in me appeared to rise from the dead and eventually find her way in this epic which is in fact just beginning. See www.posti.fi Emergency Numbers. Most grocery stores are open Mon-Fri 7-21, Sat 7-18 and Sun 12-21. We welcome You to experience the beneficial effects of our treatments on your health and well-being and to breathe new life into the spring together!

began one year ago...yes already! Who would have known meeting with a bunch of Finnish while Erasmus in Ireland back in 1999 would lead me to move from the city of lights to a little countryside city based in Pohjanmaa. Wanha Kauppahalli ("Old Market Hall") at the Market Square and Hakaniemen Kauppahalli ("Hakaniemi Market Hall") are the most popular. Quite frankly, not a soul. Helsinki's General Post Office is also open at the weekend 10-18. As I oriented myself to my new life, I also decided to enroll for a year of Finnish language study while looking for a job. In the evenings and at weekends adults in need of urgent medical treatment in Helsinki should go to emergency health centres at Haartman hospital (Haartmaninkatu 4) or Maria hospital (Lapinlahdenkatu 16). Stenbäckinkatu 11, 09 471 72783 (between 6:00 and 22:00), 09 471 72751 (between 22:00 and 6:00). Behind the awkwardness and disconcerting aspect of it, there is however the engine of it all, Timo my Finnish star turning the heart of a well-established Parisian upside down. I should say I enjoy challenges and learning Finnish was one of them which leads me to mention the one I am experiencing right now: look-
ing for a job! Being a European citizen does not mean all, and access to residency is closely linked to your participation to the society, namely working, and I came to discover how hard it was to deal with the national institutions although I was full of drive. Helsinki is hence my next stop, I cannot wait to mingle with the crowd.
Next week... Grocery stores. Medical services. At these public terminals internet use is usually free of charge. 09 471 72432; Töölö hospital, Topeliuksenkatu 5, tel. Restaurants in the Helsinki area can be found from the internet service www.eat.fi, which provides information on restaurants, their menus, opening hours and some user rating etc. 09 471 87383; Vantaa: Peijas hospital, Sairaalakatu 1, tel. Banks are usually open Mon-Fri 9:15-16:15 except for the bank at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, which is open 6-22 daily. 09 471 67371; Espoo: Jorvi hospital, Turuntie 150, tel. In a number of Finnish towns public internet posts are quite rare due to extensive per-person internet use at home. Post offices are usually open Mon-Fri 10-18. Helsinki Times has a working life themed issue, we also reveal some of the beautiful old manor houses around the city and preview Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen's gig at Sonera Stadium.
