Celebrating a Rich History
The Czech Republic is linked to the rich historical tradition of the Czech Crown Lands, especially with the democratic heritage of 1918-38 , when the Czechoslovak Republic was one of the most advanced European nations. The Czech Republic can pride itself on its magnificent Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, Art Nouveau and Cubist buildings. On May 1 2004, the economic growth, social stability and a successful referendum resulted in the country`s accession to a united Europe during the largest enlargment of the EU from 15 to 25 member countries. At the time, it was considered an island of democracy and civil liberties in Central Europe and an active partner cooperating internationally with democratic countries.
European Union Membership
In 1993, the Czech Republic expressed an interest in becoming a member of the EU. Czech cultural maturity is most visible in the works of art found in theaters, cinemas, libraries, globally recognized galleries, and concert halls. The Czech Republic is an advanced Central European country with increasing standards of living. Contemporary Czech music develops and coincides with world trends and encompasses genres from classical to alternative music to world music and rock.
