IT HAS been very interesting to read the articles on
the Swedish speakers in Finland in the Helsinki Times.
Unfortunately many of the

generation of Finns are under the misapprehension
that Finland was occupied
by Sweden. Of course
we are Finns . As the articles pointed out Finland was
a part of Sweden for 600
years. A Swedish

term, but certainly describes us
correctly.
ONE may wonder why there is

The two colors were chosen
at the end of the 19th century
to symbolise the Swedish element in Finland and are still
to be seen in the symbol of the

A VERY important fact is that
we are a part of the Nordic
countries to which Finland,
Sweden, Norway, Denmark
and Iceland belong. we
were also allowed to keep
the Swedish form of government, with its laws and
institutions.
WHAT we must be particularly grateful to Sweden for is
the fact that we had and still
have the same law and order
that prevails throughout the
Nordic countries, especially
avoiding the serfdom practiced in Russia. Russian was to

Helping also entails starting to put out any possible

barrier between public of?cials and citizens.
The language used by the
of?cials is based on the law.
The language used by the average person in their everyday life is different, and
sometimes balancing between these two idioms is dif?cult also for a public of?cial.
?Even though you want
to make sure that the customer understands what you

make sure that you are talking about the same thing.
A public of?cial cannot cut

country is whether or not the
death penalty can end, or at
least reduce, such horri?c attacks on women.
For the past month, Indian
authorities have struggled to
pacify urban protestors with
promises of legal amendments and enhanced security
for women; but even as politicians spoke from podiums
and police poured into the
streets, brutal attacks continued unabated.
In the northern state of
Punjab, a woman was gangraped inside a bus in early
January, while in the northwestern Rajasthan state a
young girl killed herself after police browbeat her for
lodging a sexual assault
complaint.
The case against
the death penalty
The question of rape has
forced politicians and scores
of citizens to grapple with the
limitations of the country?s
justice system.
India?s Women and Child
Development Minister Krishna Tirath said laws should
be changed to include death
as a penalty for rape in the
most brutal cases that leave
the victim incapable of leading a normal life, while India?s leader of opposition in
Parliament, Sushma Swaraj,
who hails from the Hindu
nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), pleaded with
the Prime Minister for capital
punishment.
Such political grandstanding has found support among
many citizens who are angry
with the rising number of assaults. but not before igniting a nation to rise
against an epidemic of sexual violence that has long
plagued this country of 1.2
billion people.
Anger was palpable
among the mourners assembled peacefully at the city?s

But the massive wave of
protests and insistent calls
for justice that followed the
tragedy has not been a suf?cient deterrent to violence: a
series of gang-rapes, including a few inside buses, have
been reported across India in
the last few weeks.

Nokia?s saintly firing spree
fallen idol Nokia is in the news again. I am enormously impressed by Nokia?s Bridge programme, which helps
sacked workers move on or start their own companies.
They didn?t have to do this.
NOKIA is like a ship that will sink if it doesn?t lighten its

in a loose noose until the new employer did the dirty

by the Wall Street Journal, among others. Every single person knew
that Nokia had outsourced to Accenture the unpleasant task of eventually letting these people go.
WHY WOULD a company

The pressure to resolve the
issue increased last weekwhen the ruling parties also voiced requests for more
powerful action by the Government to support the Finnish shipbuilding industry.
Annika Lapintie, chair

they hope that the Government would again study all
the means possible to retain

Kärnä says that the Social
Democratic Party parliamentary group will discuss the issue further.
MP Sirpa Paatero (SDP)
believes that the members of
the party disagree on whether or not the State should buy
a share of the company. And this is relatively true. Urpilainen said in
a press conference arranged
in connection with a meeting
of her party government.
She continued, however, that the State could buy
a share of a marine or shipbuilding industry company
at a later date.
Dissent in the Social
Democratic Party
Jukka Kärnä, an MP of the
Social Democratic Party,
does not agree with Urpilainen, the party chair, and
wants the State to become a
co-owner of STX Finland.
A member of the Economy
Committee, Kärnä believes
that STX France was recently awarded a luxury cruiser
deal instead of STX Finland
because the State of France
is a co-owner in STX France.
?We should be interested
in the 11,000 man-years in
the current economic situation. ?Absolutely, if
it could help in retaining shipbuilding in Finland,. Undoubtedly, people are wondering if the same thing will happen
to those going to Tata and HCL.
THE VERY day in 2011 the news broke about the Accenture deal, I spoke to Nokia employees, professional investors and people in the media. Recently the chairman of a trade union accused Nokia of

Minister of Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori (National Coalition Party) has

a company that is in trouble
would go against the Government?s long-term principles.
Minister of Finance Jutta

Petteri Orpo, the chair of

but there is no way of knowing without reading the

Trade Union Pro?s attitude
towards investing in STX is basically positive. Accenture could plausibly handle the bad press
of mass layoffs better than consumer-driven Nokia.
THE HEART of the matter is that Nokia needs to down-
size. As far as I can determine, Nokia is going out of its way to make it as easy as possible. Orpo says.

Finnish pension insurance

Relocation, relocation, relocation
Finding a suitable day care or school for your children is one more task on your to-do list when moving with your family. Marjo Lautjärvi, CEO of FRS, founded the company in 1994, and
now has 14 members of staff
who have collectively lived in
19 different countries, speak
10 different languages and
have 130 years of accumulated experience working in
international mobility. This in itself can be
confusing, with the different
agent services, rental procedures, and individual building arrangements.
Once you?ve made it this
far and can begin to unpack in
your new home, there arises
the remainder of the potential nightmare that is setting
up your new life here. Even
without the complication of
having to learn Finnish, the
form-?lling and registrations with the authorities,
and the settling into the unfamiliar customs and culture
of everyday life are challenges for any newcomer.
Even the tiniest elements
of a new life in Finland, such as
getting to grips with the public
transport system, or ?guring
out which are the best brands
of food to buy, can be overwhelming. An easier, hassle-free solution to relocation is at hand, so why
struggle when you no longer
have to?. But trying to compile
and work your way around a
to-do list in a foreign country
where you don?t speak the
language can be extremely
isolating. Wouldn?t it be wonderful if there were a service
in Finland that guided you
through the whole process of
immigration and settling in?
Finland Relocation Services does just this, going
one step further and supporting immigrants through

Going it alone
Are you an immigrant to Finland and considering opening your own business. In the corporate world I only did my
job and there were always
other teams to do the next
steps. ?I am thankful for
Nokia giving initial support
and funding.?
There are a host of organisations that aim to help new
entrepreneurs in Finland.
The state offers many, such
as the ELY Centres for general help and Finnvera for
export-oriented companies.
Universities have programs,
like Aalto?s Entrepreneurship

?I feel for the ?rst time in my
life that my skills are fully
utilised and I feel more energetic and happy,. Also be
careful with fake business angels who try to help and end
up doing nothing valuable. One
of the most commonly-cited
positive reasons is that foreigners have more of an entrepreneurial spirit in their
home countries than what is
found in Finland. The popular Nokia
Bridge program, where each
entrepreneur can get up to
25,000 euros in funding, has
helped several hundred new
companies get started.

Getting support
Numerous studies have
shown that foreigners in Finland are more likely to go into
entrepreneurship than native Finns. Challagonda says. He spends a
large amount of time talking
to potential business angels,
customers and investors.
?It was important to
learn that I need to do everything by myself. So the good thing
is that I am learning a lot
of new things, I am in control of things, and I am also
accountable.?
Challagonda says that
some days are predictable
and some days are not. There are multiple
reasons for this, some positive and some negative. A common
negative reason is that it is
very dif?cult for immigrants
to ?nd traditional jobs and
go into entrepreneurship for
lack of better alternatives.
For those who are interested
in entrepreneurship, Challagonda offers some practical advice:
?Be positive and have an
open mind. So it?s a sweet spot to
become an entrepreneur. From
day one plan to reach the global market. But
one thing is always in his
mind: money. Finnvera
primarily focuses on export-oriented companies by offering

A taste of Jyväskylä
G A B R I E L A S T OYC H E VA / H E L S I N K I T I M E S
We take a culinary tour of Central Finland?s capital.
THE SECRET of tasty food lies
in the fact that there is an
entire universe of ?avours
waiting to be discovered,
mixed and savoured. ?Our real ambassadors are the residents,?
said Vilhelm Relander, who
manages the Helsinki food
culture strategy at the Helsinki Wholesale Market.
Food blogging
to reader?s heart
Culinary blogs are for
those who love food and
cooking or simply admire
the beautiful pictures.
Food bloggers have created a new kind of interactive discussion about
food in Finland. Now you can get familiar with the cookery
of the Norsemen in Jyväskylä! Let us explore the Viking Restaurant Harald and rediscover the ancient times.
At ?rst glance it becomes obvious that the restaurant
is far from ordinary: the walls resemble sanctuary facades
with drawings, the lighting is very faint and mainly provided by candles. In the Gloria Blog
Awards 2012 the most
beautiful food blog title went to Vatsasekaisin
kilinkolin. In Jyväskyla you can
?nd the key to a good mood in Wilhelmiinan Konditoria,
a deservedly award-winning bakery that simply has it all.
The food choice is remarkable: there are always at least ten
kinds of cake, various traditional Finnish delights, fresh
bread and tasty sandwiches at affordable prices.
What is fascinating about Wilhelmiinan Konditoria is
that the compounds are entirely hand-made. Cooking has become
a hobby thanks to food
blogs,. The orange or
cream mug improves the
overall taste of the drink.
However, the colour, in
turn, hardly can alter the
sweetness or aroma. This
effect is linked with the
functioning of the brain,
which derives information not only from food as
such, but from dishes. This is the place to
be if you would like to explore entirely new perspectives of
familiar dishes.
The extensive menu, which is also available in English,
offers classic dishes and extravagant meals, tasty Finnish delicacies and well-known Italian food. In 2012,
the in?ation index was
above the European Central Bank?s predictions
and in Finland in?ation
reached 3,5% - which is
greater than the European
average. Each pastry
is prepared in the bakery from scratch, which contributes
to the experience: it tastes like home! This may be the main
reason why so many customers take the opportunity to order entire cakes, pastry and bread take-away.
Wilhelmiinan Konditoria also offers some of the best
coffee beverages in Jyväskylä. Each cup of coffee possesses tempting aroma since the beans used are ground by hand
and roasted right before the customer?s eyes. The grilled salmon with Rosso?s caponata is a notable trademark of the restaurant and a feast
for the taste buds. Meanwhile, foodstuffs increased in price
by an average of 5,7%.
However, some speci?c
products endured significant changes in pricing:
the price of eggs rose by
18%, beef and pork by 12%,
sugar by 5% and baby food
by 13%. Additionally, for those who do not fancy meat, there is a wide variety of salads, vegetarian dishes and soups to enjoy. The city can take you
on a journey of tastes from
all over the world, starting
with traditional Finnish cuisine and specialties. Male blogger
Chez Jasu won the best
food blog title.
Finnish hiked food
prices outpaces
an inflation
Statistics Finland has revealed current statistics
on the rise in food prices and in?ation . Teurastamo, ?abattoir. However the real journey begins when you open the menu since
each dish comes with a story from the Viking history and
you can taste delicacies such as bear meat, wild boar, reindeer and many kinds of ?sh. Take a journey with a pint of beer and a dish from the à la carte menu.
Ye Old Brick?s Inn offers about 70 kinds of beer and 50
kinds of whiskey, which is an extraordinary variety for a
Finnish pub. in English, is a strategic development with
taste. Straight from
the traditional Finnish ruokapöyta, salmon is served in different variations. The origin of beverages ranges from closer-tohome Germany, Ireland and Scotland, to faraway Mexico.
The wine list is also growing constantly and provides the
opportunity to try fancy world-known wines with admirable aftertaste.
For customers. As Helsinki transforms itself into a
?rst-class European food
city, the City of Helsinki
has recognised the efforts
of the founder of summer
cafè Ihana Kahvila, Sanni Jouhki, and Roihuvuori
senior citizen centre?s director Maritta Haavisto.
The food culture awards
will be an annual recognition of persons or other actors, one inside and
another outside the City
of Helsinki organisation.
?Meals are moments dedicated to enjoying food
and to social experience,?
Haavisto says.
To colour the taste
Candle light and coffee aroma
Around the world with a pint of beer
Sometimes all it takes to brighten a gloomy day is a sweet
treat accompanied by good coffee. In addition, only
200,000 (2% of farms in
the EU) farms can be considered as organic producers. One can also
enjoy a nice cup of tea in the amazingly relaxed atmosphere
of the bakery, on a cosy candlelit table. The strict EU-wide
regulation was named the
main reason for this bleak
picture. It bears the pure ?avour of good quality but
it comes with a memorable experience. Nothing
can provide a better oppor-
tunity to try and appreciate
good food than a dinner out.
So why not experiment with
tastes in Jyväskylä!
As a lively city of cultural diversity, Jyväskylä offers
something for everybody:
from luxurious restaurants
to cosy buffets, and from
fancy pubs to student-friendly bars. they wear costumes and introduce themselves with a Viking name. said Sanna Maskulin, the editor-in-chief of
Gloria?s Food&Wine magazine. Nothing compares to
this warm blissful feeling especially on a cold evening.
Founded in the distant year of 1994, Ye Old Brick?s Inn has
been serving its customers and developing over the years to
become a well-known restaurant in Jyväskylä nowadays. and the
news is not good. ?In recent
years the number and also
the level of food blogs have
risen. Whether you live in Jyväskylä or you
are just visiting, there are
certain eateries in the city
that can turn a simple dinner into a memorable experience and be the milestones
on your exploration of tastes.
Classics with a Rosso touch
Dine with the Vikings
In the very heart of Jyväskylä, there is a way to escape the
city noise and enjoy a lovely meal in a cosy atmosphere.
Restaurant Rosso is the perfect option for a family dinner,
gathering with friends or simply enjoying the wonders of
Finnish and Italian cuisine.
Each meal in Rosso is prepared as a classic yet has the
strong and identi?able ?Rosso touch?. In the culinary hotspot are several new restaurants, including hip
Helsinki restaurant A21,
Pasta Factory and a dim
sum restaurant serving
small portions of traditional Chinese foods. Teurastamo has been well-received
so far. Now the European Commission are keen
to update their rules concerning organic food production, therefore until
10 April 2013 people can
suggest their ideas about
enhancing organic food
supply in the EU on their
web-page ec.europa.eu.
Food and design
Helsinki is improving its
food culture, as well as
the city?s international
reputation as a culinary
destination. The strategy?s main points are increasing organic foods at
the city day care centres
and schools. If you are not overly cautious when
counting calories, a dessert such as a tiramisu cup can be
the sweetest end of a delicious dinner.
Ever wondered how the almighty Vikings feasted after a long
day of conquests. enjoyment, the restaurant serves food
until late at night and you can easily tell by the delightful taste that the meals are self-prepared at the kitchen.
Lunch is served during weekdays and at all times one can
relish dishes from around the world or try Finnish treats
such as whitebaits, reindeer or lamb in the cosy atmosphere of an old-time inn.

legislation
Only 2% of all bought food
in the EU is certi?ed organic (in other words,
contains at least 95% natural agricultural ingredients), states new data
from the European Commission. Its
most amazing trait is that both meals and alcoholic beverages served are of impressive diversity and quality. From the starters to the desserts, each dish carries the Viking spirit.
The food of Harald simply tastes like nothing you have
tried before. The experience is enhanced by medieval
music and also by the serving personnel . In Finland prices,
however, also rose due to
increased indirect taxes.

We
did not know anything about

What strikes me the
most about Helsinki and Finland in general is how little
known they were, and still
are, among my friends back
in Switzerland. Yes, Sweden, of course. Banks are usually open Mon-Fri
9:15-16:15 except for the bank at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, which
is open 6-22 daily. The
more I go around the city and
explore different parts of it,
the more I enjoy myself living
up here. All with bathroom en suite.

Living at the top of the world
I FIRST visited Helsinki in
spring 2011 while I was on a
road trip across Europe with
a friend of mine. Going
jogging in Töölönlähti, I could
come across old couples running, people running with
dogs and even with little kids.
When people ask me how
is it to live in Finland, the
word I choose is fascinating.
Not everybody knows how
big the country is and that
in fact things like ?Oh, I envy
you. Helsinki?s
General Post Office is also open at the weekend 10-18. We offer a 150 ha
private property with very special views.

Service number: 045-8011 579 . The biggest difference is
the cold winter: where I used
to live, temperatures do not
go below zero this much and
snowstorms are rare. You probably go to Lapland every weekend in winter!. What a pleasant surprise
it was to come here! After those
four days in spring I came back
in the summer and....
Now, I have been living in
Helsinki for more than a year.
Coming from Switzerland, I
found a culture and way of
life than are not that different
from those of my home country. Grocery stores in the Helsinki Central Railway
Station tunnel are open Mon-Sat 7-22 and Sun 10-22.
