Rasmussen, however, refused to be drawn on whether Finland should join Nato. Other European nations not in the Eurozone, such as Switzerland and the whole of Scandinavia, remain top-rated and stable.
NATO SECRETARY General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said that Finland's decision on whether or not to join Nato is its own business and that Russia should respect that fact. It blames the on-going debt crisis, the possibility of a Greek exit from the Eurozone, and the likelihood of more bailouts being required as reasons for the change in outlook. See pages 14

it was, like I did when I was 15. I was 15 years old then, and thinking back it was very ex-
citing to me that something "off textbook" had been discovered, and nobody knew what it was. What does this recent discovery mean to you as a physicist. I suppose the only surprise is that a theory that got constructed nearly 50 years [ago] didn't need more embellishment that nature hasn't had more surprises for us. In terms of new particles, the Standard Model would imply that we're finished as far as the energy range of the current CERN accelerator.
Of course, we can't know for sure that there's nothing out there until we've looked, and theories have certainly been constructed that have all sorts of other particles that might be seen. What's left to be discovered with the particle accelerator. But once I was decently convinced, it was basically, "Wow, after all these years, it's finally over. It seems like something that fundamental
should have a fundamental origin, rather than being associated with a sort of "bolt on" to the theory. What does this mean for the future of CERN. Articles should be at least 5,000 characters-with-spaces long (maximum length 10,000). But we don't get to pick our universe... I read that you had a different reaction to learning about the existence of the J/psi particle in November 1974. The opinions expressed in this section are the writers' own and do not represent the official policy of the Helsinki Times.
Stephen Wolfram is a distinguished scientist, inventor, author, and business leader. There's also lots to be done in terms of studying detailed features of the Standard Model, starting with the detailed properties of the Higgs particle. The challenge with experiments is to be able to detect the truly unexpected. Of course, most of these particles decay incredibly quickly, so it's not as if there'd be lumps of such material to investigate (except maybe in a neutron star, but we don't exactly have lots of those handy). There's only one particle accelerator
in the world that can make Higgs particles, and it makes them at a tiny rate. But if we could one day make a beam of Higgs particles, it would have some wild and perhaps ultimately useful properties. First, of course, I wondered if it was correct, and wanted to know all sorts of technical details. A notable example is quark-gluon plasmas, whose properties are relevant to the early universe, and perhaps to some violent spots in our current universe. Another issue is that the Higgs mechanism is supposed to explain mass, but it requires that the mass of every single kind of particle is introduced as a parameter to the underlying theory, which somehow means that it doesn't feel like one's "getting out" much more than one put in. Some things are fairly easy to compute from the Standard Model, and it's really just a question of checking them. if our universe happens to have something unexpected out there for us.. It's very much in line with what we've expected for er arbitrary that's been inserted into the theory. It was originally introduced as a clever way to avoid some mathematical consistency issues in the theory. And I thought, "Just because I'm a 15-yearold kid doesn't mean I won't be able to figure it out." It'd be fun if something that unexpected was discovered in particle physics now I think I'd enjoy taking a vacation from leading my company to try to figure out what
more than 30 years. Others are hard to compute, and the only way we can be sure what's going to happen is to do an experiment. You've described the Higgs mechanism as "a bit of a hack." What do you mean by that. But that's not the way our current mathematical setup for the theory works. But even though the current accelerator experiments at CERN are very complex, I think they have a decent chance of doing this ... Right now none. Pretty much what one expected." I guess I'd held out a little hope that there might be something unexpected, because I don't aesthetically like the Higgs mechanism too much. Now perhaps there's some other way to look at the theory that makes the Higgs mechanism seem much more natural. Nobody knows how to do [it] all yet, but it's conceivable that one day there might be miniaturized particle accelerators, and if that were to happen, then all sorts of things might be possible. You can submit your articles to viewpoint@helsinkitimes.fi. Of course, partly because of what I've spent my life doing, we've got much better tools to do it these days. Large numbers of Finns view corruption is a major issue in decisionmaking at municipal level.

ONE-THIRD of Finns see signs of corruption in the form of old-boy networks in their municipality. The researchers were inspired by the way that animals, such as pigeons and lobsters use anomalies in the earth's magnetic field when navigating. In his view, corruption does not seem to be a major problem in the municipal field: "What makes the result interesting is that we get an insight into the citizens' and municipal residents' opinions on the issues."
· Corruption refers to the abuse of a position of authority for private gain, by, for example, politicians, civil servants and business executives. · Bribery is the most common form of corruption and is a criminal offence in most countries, including Finland. According to Vettenperä the character of Elisa is real, but the story partially fictional. As new technologies emerge, the big companies keep pushing the boundaries of their plans for indoor navigation. Since then the truthfulness of Elisa's story has been strongly questioned. When using the software, you first need to insert the floor plans from a particular building, after which the IndoorAtlas will collect the magnetic field data and create a map using its breakthrough technology. have started investigation into whether the author of a book based on bullied school girl's suicide has committed fraud in the marketing of the book. He says, "The decision-makers won't see any real problems in the way they use power. As the customers try to locate a certain product inside a shop using their indoor navigation apps, the retailers can simultaneously inform them of special offers and get detailed information about their customers' purchasing habits. "As for the state, public sector acquisitions have been handled with slightly more tact," he says. Regarding municipalities,
Laukkanen sees public sector acquisitions as the main problem. The IndoorAtlas navigation system can pinpoint your position to the nearest 0.1m and doesn't need external hardware. Tavastia Police questioned Vettenperä on June 24. Only about a quarter of people residing in more rural municipalities think that the abuse of power is common in the municipality. A spin-off company called IndoorAtlas was launched soon afterwards, the first in the world to offer technology using the earth's magnetic field for indoor navigation. This finding was reported by a TNS Gallup opinion poll commissioned by the Foundation for Municipal Development. Since the processes are not transparent, it is impossible to judge after the fact how a particular decision was reached. The accusations of the abuse of power are most common amongst the 35to 49-year olds, with just under half believing in the abuse of old-boy networks. The Centre Party supporters were bottom of the list, with only one in five believing in the abuse of power. · Political corruption is the manipulation of political procedure by decision-makers to secure their power, position and personal wealth. Erkki Laukkanen, the chair of anti-corruption organisation Transparency Finland, says that there is a natural explanation for the differences between the parties: the Centre Party's position as the leading party outside cities. They want things to become more public." Mykkänen sees the results as a sign of healthy scepticism regarding the decision-making process. The author told STT early in July that the profit from sales of the book had been estimated 7000 euro
before taxes. By early July Elisa's Facebook group had gained over 40,000 members. In general, slightly over half of the respondents were of the opinion that the abuse of power hardly existed, or did not take place at all, in their municipality.
Campaign funding irregularities influenced attitudes A lack of transparency in the decision-making process is also abuse of power. When iPhone and Android phones arrived with built-in compasses, we realized that we could develop an
innovative indoor navigation solution by applying our digital signal-processing expertise," said Janne Haverinen, head of the research team in a statement. The general belief is that all chicanery is impossible." Mykkänen, however, holds a dissenting view: "In bigger towns, there is more money involved in land use and planning than in the countryside. Hence, suspi-
cions, whether founded or not, may arise more readily." According to the survey, only one in ten under-25s considers decision-making corrupt. "Each building, floor and corridor creates a distinct magnetic field disturbance that can be measured to identify a location and generate a map. According to Laukkanen, this is because people in rural municipalities knowing each other better whereas in bigger administrative units decision-making tends to become faceless: "In small municipalities, people trust that everybody is working towards a common goal. By unifying an app that delivers special offers and direct advertisement with the indoor navigation one, retailers and customers could interact on a new level. Accusations of corruption are most common amongst supporters of the Left Alliance and the True Finns, about half of whom feel that corruption exists in decisionmaking at municipal level. It will be used for indoor navigation apps for smartphones, and the potential market is huge. The biggest benefactors of indoor navigation applications would be big commercial spaces such as airports and malls, but university students for example, would have great use for a mobile app that helps them find their next classes. According to Laukkanen, the discussion on campaign funding has changed the public perception of corruption in a fundamental way, turning it more critical: "People are now more aware of what campaign funding is all about. Google's director of product management Steve Lee has stated that, "Our eventual goal is for users of Google Maps to be able to go into any public space and be able to find their way around." The biggest market for indoor navigation lies in integration between different service providers into a single app. The potential market for a functioning indoor navigation system is huge and has led to frenzied collaboration and competition between the leading companies in web search, mobile phone and software markets. Normal navigation systems such as GPS are too weak to penetrate the walls of buildings, and triangulation is inaccurate and requires external hardware infrastructure, such as Wi-Fi.
Breakthrough technology There is a range of different indoor navigation apps available for smartphones, but the biggest issue with them has been accuracy. Those outside decision-making have a different view on things." "People in power will not necessarily see anything un-
usual about the way they use that power," adds Antti Mykkänen, representative for the Foundation for Municipal Development.
Small municipalities do not believe in chicanery There are also regional differences, with 40 per cent of residents in the capital region, Uusimaa region and elsewhere in Southern Finland believing that corruption takes place on their doorstep

Jussi Hurmola's company Jolla Mobile made a splash earlier this month by announcing it will continue the work that Nokia started with MeeGo phones, but then abandoned to go with Windows' Phone. The new instructions also made it obligatory for the mothers who got the pack to visit a physician during pregnancy. "There has never been official demands that the pack should again be admitted based on the family's income level," Onninen confirms. This corresponded to more than a third of the average monthly salary of an industrial worker. In the beginning the pack was used for a bed as the poorest homes did not necessarily have a clean place for a baby to sleep. In 2010, paternity leave was extended to 36 working days, and consequently the number of daddy months taken increased by roughly 35 per cent to 16,000 in 2011. Jolla plans to launch its new Linux-based smartphone later this year and is investing in style and functionality. The pack also contained fabric, as during the 1930s and 1940s it was common to sew baby clothes at home. milk] a day are now only producing sixty or seventy pounds daily", Jim Fraley of the Illinois Milk Producers Association in Bloomington said. "In the 18 primary corngrowing states, 30 per cent of the crop is now in poor or very poor condition," the National Drought Summary said. In the Arctic, the ice sheet also melted more than average this June, according to a 2012 publication on the Greenland ice sheet by Jason Box, a researcher at Byrd Polar Research Center. "We have some counties in the most affected areas of the drought (southern Illinois) where they may not harvest a corn or soybean crop this fall if it does not rain," Hawkins added. In addition to the financial losses that farmers will face, ranchers who mainly feed their cattle with corn and soybeans will also greatly suffer from the drought. "Breaking down the real and imaginary walls can only be done when Israel, absurdly the strongest military power in the region, will be courageous enough to give up some
of its privileges and make Israel and Palestine a more equal state and accept that it is part of the Middle East, its problems and solutions." In June, the Israeli authorities completed construction of a seven-metre high wall separating the country from Lebanon. "It is reasonable to expect 100 per cent melt area over the ice sheet within another similar decade of warming," Box concluded. The same holds true for the previous two months. "It doesn't take a genius to conclude that reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, which are causing a large part of global warming, would be a good idea if we want to slow this process down and avoid some of the worst-case scenarios, including more severe drought events," he said.
Food crops failing as US simmers in record heat wave
The extreme weather conditions in the south-western US, caused mainly due to human-induced and natural climate change, has brought about unprecedented drought in the region. The current situation will have a dreadful effect on world's crop supply.

THE UNITED States is suffering one of its most severe droughts in decades, leading to both widespread crop failures and increased public concern about the impacts of climate change. Still, the unprecedented drought will inevitably take a heavy toll on farmers, accord-
ing to John Hawkins from the Farm Bureau of Illinois, one of the most affected states. According to a new report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climatic Data Center, the northern hemisphere's land and ocean average surface temperature for June was the warmest ever recorded. The Israeli government promotes the wall as a way to protect Israeli civilians from Palestinian violence. "To continue the peace, there must be security and to this end a fence is necessary," he has said. "In addition, fully half of the nation's pastures and ranges are in poor or very poor condition." The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has responded by designating more than 1,000 counties in 26 states as natural disaster areas, making affected farmers eligible for low-interest emergency loans from the Farm Service Agency (FSA). Palestinians say that the wall, which cuts deep into the occupied West Bank, is a means for Israel to seize more Palestinian land. "I do not expect lines at the supermarket to buy milk, but prices will likely be higher," Hoskin concluded.

A portent of global warming The United States has seen a dramatic increase in wildfires since mid-June, according to the National Drought Summary, with more than a thousand homes lost to fire since January. With the US the world's number one corn producer, growing 40 per cent of the world's supply, the consequences could be very serious and would affect everyone from cultivators to consumers worldwide. Even before this announcement, Jordanian King Abdullah II said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal in September last year that "Israel has to decide; does it want to be part of the neighbourhood or does it want to be fortress Israel?" Israeli historian Ilan Pappe says Israel's fortress mentality is nothing new,
and is a product of early Zionist thinking. Freedman believes the current situation is a product of both human-induced climate change and natural climate variability. Rising corn and soybean prices will also greatly affect dairy producers and lead to a price hike in milk and cheese, according to the USDA. Israel's eight-metre high Separation Barrier with the West Bank referred to by most Palestinians as the Apartheid Wall is now in its tenth year of construction. "Drought events are likely to become more frequent and intense in many parts of the world, particularly in the south-western US," Andrew Freedman, a senior science
Failing crops The drought, which is less extreme, but geographically even more widespread than the one that led to the Dust Bowl in the 1930s a period of severe agricultural loss in the US is now affecting more than 60 per cent of the country, and 78 per cent of the corn-growing regions, according to the US Drought Monitor. Peace and security fences Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the fence is necessary to maintain peaceful relations with Egypt. As a ripple effect, the whole economy will be affected by the extreme weather conditions. Building of the section around Ma'ale Adumim near Jerusalem, one of Israel's largest settlements, is expected to start next year. "The main Zionist and later Israeli impulse was not to be part of the Middle East but to belong to Europe," Pappe tells in an e-mail interview. The wall equipped with cameras and motion detection sensors covers approximately 1,200 metres. "I feel like I'm doing something against myself," says 29-year-old Mohammad Anur Adam, a refugee from Darfur who spent eight months building a road that the Israeli army and police will use to patrol the fence.

AS ISRAEL continues to build walls and fences along virtually each of its borders, analysts say the country's isolationist policies and unwillingness to deal with the Palestinians and other Arab neighbours through anything other than forceful means spells disaster. Ironically, asylum seekers in Israel who now number approximately 60,000 are themselves involved in the building of the fence and its infrastructure. But Israel's push to erect walls and fences around itself doesn't end at the Separation Wall; construction of a 230-kilometre fence along Israel's southern border with Egypt is moving forward at a frantic pace, in an attempt to keep African asylum seekers out

Yet now we are a net importer, despite our Finance Minister's surreal persistence on calling us "export dependent." We have been busy worrying about southern Europe, and our loans to them, while our own strength has evaporated. For Varma, the change is even more drastic. The year 2010 had only 11,905 people emigrate from Finland, the smallest number in more than a decade. The mobile phone firm invested heavily in its future: in the early 2000s, for example, Nokia spent more in research and development than Google and Apple combined. Or is our labour system too mired in bureaucracy and collective bargaining agreements to work effectively. Non-residents have been pouring into the perceived safe haven of some domestic fixed income securities. It was very disturbing to watch, and I luckily declined to buy any Nokia shares. "In its fixed income investments, Varma continued its conservative and cautious risk policy, concentrating its government bond investments on Finland and Germany," the pension company announced in April. As the Bank of Finland explains: "on average, there were practically no direct investment inflows in 2008-2011." There is an exception though, and that is with Finnish bonds and money market instruments. It's problems, and how to fix them, could be viewed as a microcosm for the country as a whole.
WE KNOW that Nokia did not neglect the future during their period of success. Yet now the continentwide economy seems to be fragmenting as each nation withdraws behind its borders. Are we not giving our youth the needed skills. Pension funds are big buyers of fixed income investments, because they are looking for conservative, income-producing assets, but they are not willing to take the risk of loaning money to the troubled states of southern Europe. IN MAY ANOTHER thing we can learn from Nokia is to fix the problem as soon as it is identified. Finnish politicians have been leading the charge for isolationism, with the Finns Party Timo Soini becoming one of the banner-bearers for those not wanting to assist other European states. They were focused on getting trounced by the iPhone, and suddenly lost their big advantage.
FOR FINLAND, our big advantage was our export market. In 2007 Ilmarinen had only 39 per cent of its listed equity holdings in Finland. Banks stay local For Finland's big investors, like the pension funds, investing domestically is a safe thing to do. At the time of writing, the ten-year Finnish government bond yield is 1.53 per cent, while the inflation rate is 3.1 per cent, meaning that investors are willing to suffer a loss, in after-inflation terms, for the safety of Finland's top-rated debt.

THE CREATION of a common market throughout Europe was arguably one of the greatest accomplishments of the grand integration project. It is unsustainable: we will not have the taxes coming in to pay for all the people who will be going into retirement. Between 2007 and 2011, the percentage of Finnish stocks in their portfolio went from 37 to 56. Early in 2009 I went to Nokia's Capital Markets Day. The financial crisis, ensuing recession, and on-going sovereign debt crisis are making businesses stick close to home. There is a more serious, contemplative and deeply beautiful side to this most northerly of cities.
FOR A SMALL nation that excels at winter sports, Finland has enjoyed a lot of success at the Summer Olympic Games, the latest of which starts in London on 27 July. And of course, if the kids insist Santa Claus Village might be a tourist trap, but it does provide for a memorable experience, with the Arctice Winter Wonderland and the Husky Park. But they might also enjoy the Arctic Circle Reindeer Farm and Funonice skating centre. But Rovaniemi is a lot more than references to popular culture, and if that was all you knew about it, then shame on you. However, it was not until the 1970s that another true Flying Finn emerged. Summertime brings the season of the Midnight Sun, when all nature is awake and blossoming, and for a time the sun never entirely goes away. This will be the smallest Finnish team to travel to an Olympic Games for over three decades, and the success-starved Finnish public will be hoping only that the country does not come back empty-handed. Success continued throughout the first half of the century, so much so that the country was offered the chance to host the 1940 Olympics. These days, of course, a large part of the city's lifeblood is tourism.
The legendary Paavo Nurmi picked up nine gold and three silver medals in Olympic games last century.

Satu Mäkelä-Nummela, who is a great chance for a Finnish medal in the Women's Trap Shooting event.
The 21st century This century has not been so productive for Finland at the Olympics, with just three gold medals over the course of three games, including the very first goldless games in Athens 2004. However, as the team prepares to fly to the British capital, there are a select few who will be hoping to make the podium this time around. The last of
the three multi-medal winning track athletes of the era was Ville Ritola, who helped himself to four long-distance gold medals in Paris, as well as two silvers, before finishing his career four years later with a gold and a silver in Amsterdam. The best known of this elite group of athletes is Paavo Nurmi, who won four gold medals at the 1920 games in Belgium before going on to win five in Paris four years later. Perhaps the best chance of a medal in London comes in the form of Satu MäkeläNummela, who won Finland's only gold at the 2008 games in the Women's Trap shooting event. The games were a huge success, but the six golds won by the host nation were to be their best tally to date, as the country suffered due to the professional era that was to follow.
History Rovaniemi really took off as a community in the 19th century, with the discovery of mineral wealth and the development of the logging industry. There is also the freshly-completed Korundi House of Culture, which is home to the Rovaniemi Art Museum and also hosts the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland. Tero Pitkämäki has been among the world's best for a number of years now and will see London 2012 as his last chance to claim an Olympic gold medal to go with the bronze he won in Beijing four years ago. They continued well into the 1920s with the advent of the Flying Finns, who dominated on the track throughout the decade.
The Flying Finns The Flying Finns are worldrenowned and were a phenomenon in their time. Perhaps the most interesting javelineer is Ari Mannio, who burst onto the scene last month when he secured a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships
in Helsinki. This is also the time that the city bustles with students, for Rovanie-
Where to go The sports scene in Rovaniemi centres on the sports centre of Ounasvaara, which offers hiking trails through the spectacular landscapes around the city. As always, the javelin is an event laden with Finnish talent. Finland's achievements go back to its very first Olympics, London 1908, when Verner Weckman won wrestling gold. But as is often the case with the Olympics, the country will be looking for a hero to step out of the shadows and once again show the world that Finland can compete at the highest level.
Nature The greatest draw here has to be nature. 14

this out of the way: yes, Santa Claus village is in Rovaniemi, and it's the official location of the jolly old chap. These games were famous for many reasons, including the greatest number of world records broken (a record which was to stand until 2008), the first Soviet Union team to compete and the reintroduction of both Germany and Japan after the Second World War. It soon became the trade centre of the entire province of Lapland, a status it holds to this day as well as being the administrative capital. Yes, the post office gets mail from all over the world addressed to him. The nickname was then semi-retired, although a few athletes, including Volmari Iso-Hollo and Tasto Mäki, were deemed successful enough to merit it. Depending on the season, there is skiing, tobogganing and bobsledding, and for the more leisurely among us, golf. She will once again be a part of the team and will look to complete an unprecedented double gold in that event. Rovaniemi is at its prettiest in Colourful Autumn, when the leaves change their colour and the countryside comes alight with the flames of autumn foliage. Young middle-distance runner Nicholas Sandells is much heralded and will fancy his chances of making the final. This awe-inspiring phenomenon appears ten times more commonly in Lapland than in the south. The war put paid to those aspirations, but Helsinki did finally get to host the Games in 1952. All in all, Rovaniemi is a gem of a vacation spot for the whole family!

Rovaniemi is located in northern Finland, about 703 km from Helsinki.
The sun sets over the crest of nearby hills in the northern town of Rovaniemi.. Much is now expected of the young athlete, although these games may be more of a learning experience for the man from Lehtimäki. Within the city, there are some lovely buildings, like the Rovaniemi Church with its great fresco, and the Alvar Aalto-designed Lapponica Hall, Library and City Hall. The truth is that the squad is not strong and hopes are not high. It is also the time for skiing holidays and other wintersports. Rovaniemi is located amidst a rugged, beautiful wilderness of eight seasons, with each having its unique qualities of light, vegetation and wildlife. Further afield are the Ranua Wildlife Park and the Lampivaara amethyst mine, both of which involve some traveling, but are well worth the visit. For something completely different in terms of accommodation, there is also the world-famous Arctic Snow Hotel at Lake Lehtojärvi, which is made entirely of snow and ice. Despite this, and the subsequent loss of around thirty metres to his competitors, he picked himself up and won the race in a time that is still an Olympiastadion record.
World War) was an astonishing 38, which established Finland as an elite Olympic nation. Yes, Lordi is from Rovaniemi, and they even have a restaurant in it, named, appropriately enough, Lordi's Rocktaurant. On the twelfth lap of the race, Virén took a nasty tumble after becoming tangled with another runner. Joining him will be Antti Ruusanen, who showed great promise in the junior ranks and will be looking to make the step up this year in order to further his career. The most popular tourist season is Christmas, for obvious reasons, but it is followed by Frosty Winter, which is the time to view the Aurora Borealis. He has been in excellent form in the run-up to the games, and was cruelly denied a tilt at a medal in the Euros when a fellow runner in the 1,500 metre final tripped him. Lasse Virén won gold in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre events at the 1972 games in Munich, but it was the latter's final that won him a place in Olympic folklore. The legendary epithet was actually first bestowed on Hannes Kolehmainen, who also had the superb nickname of "Smiling Hannes", thanks to his three gold medals and one silver at the 1912 games in neighbouring Stockholm, as well as a gold in the marathon eight years later
Fans will rejoice, his critics will yawn and newcomers will no doubt be charmed. Things kick off on Saturday in front of Kiasma with the Surfing the Apocalypse skate ramp, which also hosts a number of Finnish street dance enthusiasts and professionals. In a special twist this year, the Mirror in a Mirror concert will present a tribute to the life of the late Anna Pavlova, with a special ballet performance accompanying the music. Advance word has been lukewarm, however, and the film opened to mixed reviews at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Also on the schedule is World Political City Walk, which asks questions about

The exotic programme, with the theme of The Mirror, features unusual pieces from lesser-known composers, such as Gubaidulina, Schnittke and Crumb. Its highlight is 11 August's Prospero's Books, a rarely-performed piece of incidental music for the Shakespearean play The Tempest. Peppered with interviews from the likes of Diane Keaton and Martin Scorsese (Mia Farrow is unsurprisingly absent), the collection of footage over the years is priceless. BRINGING the funk to these shores for the first time since 2003, Red Hot Chili Peppers rock the stage at Tampere's Ratinan Stadion on Wednesday 1 August. All this and more is recorded in Woody Allen: A Documentary Manhattan, Movies and Me. While some lament this as pandering to an European audience that remains loyal to him, Allen maintains that it is here in Europe that he can make movies on his own terms, the way he has always worked. Hailing from Los Angeles, the quartet emerged in the `80s with their innovative sound, which blended funk, rap and rock elements with sex-drenched lyrics. After sitting out 1996's underrated One Hot Minute, Frusciante returned to the fold for 1999's Californication, as the quartet enjoyed yet another burst of staggering success.
Sticking around for a couple more albums, Frusciante eventually left once again after the end of their Stadium Arcadium Tour in 2007, paving the way for Josh Klinghoffer to join the group for last year's well received I'm With You. Most of the top-class talents are students of the Sibelius Academy, aged between 16 and 30. Throw in a cast that includes Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams and Steve Buscemi and things start to get interesting. Having accumulated 20 Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes and an Academy Award during a career that stretches back to 1969, The Boss arrives in support of his recently released full-length Wrecking Ball.
Renowned for his working-class tales of love and troubles, Springsteen has scaled impressive heights since emerging on the New Jersey music scene over four decades ago. Written by Sibelius for orchestra, choir, vocalists and harmonium, it will be conducted by Dalia Stasevska. With a back catalogue that includes chartbusting successes such as Born in the USA (1984) sitting comfortably alongside the introspective masterpieces of Nebraska (1982), his recent output has been well received. The URB12 festival lands in Helsinki from 28 July to 5 August, packed full of performances, events and urban culture. He reunited with the E Street Band earlier this century after a critical and commercial lull in the early `90s. Further inspiration from the street comes in the shape of Russian street artist Timofey Radya's plans to turn old books into street art. Alternately loved,

Yonder Woman sees two women step onstage and expose themselves to the expectations of society. Elsewhere, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac's seminal novel On the Road hits the screens.
