New breathalysers will decrease
the burden on police as a drunk
driving suspect can be breathalysed on the spot. H T
bY THe end of the year, police
will finally be able to make use
of the 50 new, more accurate
breathalysers it acquired five
years ago, according to Police
Inspector Timo Ajaste of the
National Police Board.
The Finnish daily Turun Sanomat reported last Wednesday that the new breathalysers
had been left unused in storage because the quality control system for the devices was
not yet in place. Union contrastively says
that it has yet to hear about
the phenomenon. says Jari Korhonen, a
regional officer at AKT. Gunnar explains.
After that, police will need
another couple of months before they can start using the
breathalysers.
Gunnar says the five-year
delay was caused by technical problems in the breathalysers that came out in the
initial testing.
Ajaste from the National
Police Board confirms this,
saying that some of the problems were linked to the manufacturer?s system while
some were due to the system
of the police.
Helsingin Sanomat reported last spring that the delay
was partly due to disruptions
in the product supplier?s business operations and matters
to do with the reform of the
police information system.
As a result of a bidding
process organised in collaboration with the other Nordic
countries, the Swedish manufacturer Evidenzer was selected as the supplier for the
breathalysers.
The technical faults in the
devices have now been rectified and they are ready to be
used, according to Gunnar.
THL has assessed the breathalysers in test conditions.
Decreasing police burden
The new breathalysers can be
used to replace a blood test,
which makes the requirements on their accuracy very
stringent. communications director Katja Saksa states.

Anssi Roitto, the executive director at the association of taxi drivers in
Helsinki, emphasises that all
drivers should have a sufficient command of Finnish.
?Without the necessary language skills, it would be impossible to pass the written
taxi-driver test,. But there is
still room for improvement
and Pessi says that a simple change in attitudes may
make all the difference, also when people feel they are
unprepared for the situation
where help is needed.
?Simple things may foster
compassion in everyday situations: a smile to the checkout person in a supermarket.
That?s a good start.?
Pessi believes that compassion and volunteering are
themes that should feature
more prominently in the national curriculum.
?We should all be capable
of putting ourselves in other
people?s shoes.?
The topic has been in the
limelight recently. The breathalysers will decrease the burden
on police as a driver suspected of drinking and driving
does not have to be taken to a
blood test but can be breathalysed on the spot and the result used as evidence in court.
Ajaste says that the new
breathalysers will be used by
police departments all over
the country but particularly in sparsely populated areas where taking a blood test
would mean a long drive for
the police.
Some of the devices have
already been distributed to
police departments and police officers have been given
training in their use.

the US, of which Iran is considered the most important

various Shia parties that have
dominated Iraq?s government
since the 2003 US invasion.
In addition to Iran, however, the administration?s
strategy will depend on co-operation from Sunni-led Gulf
states, especially Saudi Arabia, which have withheld support from Iraq under Maliki
and largely failed to vigorously
enforce laws and international sanctions against those of
its citizens who have provided financial and other support
to Al Qaeda, its affiliates, and,
more recently, ISIS.
Much the same approach
applies to its strategy against
ISIS in Syria, where it faces a
much trickier situation given
US opposition to the Assad regime, whose forces, however,
are increasingly seen here as
the only significant barrier to
ISIS?s expansion there.
While Obama last month
pledged 500 million dollars in

officials have said the vetting and training of new fighters will take many months to
complete and, even then, is
unlikely to be able to tilt the
battlefield in any substantial
way for the foreseeable future, if at all.
Thus, the primary battlefield beneficiary of US strikes
against ISIS in Syria is likely to be Assad, a prospect that

His 63rd-minute goal

The results may provide

who argue that reading a

?It?s interesting to us that

Later on, the scientists

minimalistic approach
The speaker is not minimalistic only in its appearance but
also in its functionalities.
Besides the power switch,
the device only has touch
buttons for volume, Bluetooth pairing, switching your
power source and stereo
expander.
Besides the wireless connection, music can be fed
from pretty much any device
via the 3.5 mm input connection at the back of the speaker.
The working of the stereo
expander is subtle.
In the past, expanders
performed shocking audio
magic tricks, turning the
music into a confusing sound
mass coming from all over
the room.
Sony?s stereo expander is
a much more stylish affair
and it is mainly a question of
personal preference whether the speaker sounds better
with or without it.
The most unusual feature
of the 199-euro device is the
dependence of its performance on the power source.
When plugged in, the speaker
packs more punch than when

The USB port at the back
of the device is a nice extra,
allowing you to charge your

Ingredients
? ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more as needed
? 225 grams dried whole-wheat spaghetti (may substitute gluten-free pasta)
? 2 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped
? ¼ cup lightly packed fresh basil leaves, plus more for garnish
? 1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest and 4 to 6 teaspoons
lemon juice (from 1 to 2 lemons; the zest is an optional garnish)
? 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
? Flesh of 1 medium ripe avocado, cut into chunks
? 1 tablespoon water, or more as needed
? Freshly ground black pepper
Steps
? Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. Add a good
pinch of salt and the pasta. ?I am known almost

and vegetables and other whole foods, in farmers markets, in
gardening. Ta?meya or Falafel,
served hot, is delicious, made
out of peeled kidney beans,
leeks, garlic and onions. I finished my meal with Ramadan?s baspossa (?3.50) for

Even though the increasing number of international

it also means that international cuisine face growing

Looking around, the restaurant?s decoration and the
combination of acclaimed
Egyptian singer Um Kalthum?s
voice and oriental music
leaves me in a state of nostalgia. Even though,
steak is among the non-traditional Egyptian dishes, Ramadan adds, what he refers to as

different, only a few Egyptian dishes are spicy and that

I just got carried away with

At the end of the day, as
the last customers shuffle

I was assured that the customers were as satisfied with

?My friends call Al Karim,

that Liddon did (before finding her way back to health through

powers of a shift in dietary habits.
One of the most popular recipes on her blog, she writes, is
for a pasta dish that uses one of my favorite ingredients, but
one that I hadn?t thought to pair with spaghetti: avocado. ?I will
remove all the non-traditional Egyptian food but leave the
steaks,. Add the lemon
juice, oil, avocado, the tablespoon of water and the ¼ teaspoon
of salt; puree until smooth, stopping to scrape down the bowl
as needed. ?I personally
offer Egyptian food just the
way it is. Now, I?ll be honest: The name of Liddon?s book (derived from her blog) had previously caused me to
assume that I couldn?t possibly find anything within that spoke

clarifies.
Step by step, he adds,
Finns became increasingly
interested in trying Egyptian

him to add more authentic
dishes to the menu. ?Kapylä is 5 km away from town
[city centre]; at that time I
had more non-Egyptian food
such as pizza, because at that
time Finns were not so brave
to try new food?.
His hesitant approach to
providing the full Egyptian
dining experience at the time
was also attributed to the
fact that Finns tended to associate exotic food with spicy

necessarily want my pasta dinners to be dairy-free, but when
the avocado blends with a little lemon, basil, garlic and olive oil,
it makes a nice, creamy sauce that doesn?t happen to include
any cream, cheese or butter.
Best of all, the sauce came together in a fraction of the time
it took to boil the pasta. She also helped bring a sense of effortlessness back to
my summer kitchen on a night that I needed it.
Avocado pasta / 4 servings
This dairy-free meal comes together in a flash because the only
thing that?s cooked is the pasta, making it perfect for summer
evenings. The chairs,

A taste of little Cairo
After starting the business
back in 1993, Ramadan faced
many challenges in his restaurant?s early stage. The
marinated feta cheese (?6.50)
with tomato, cucumber, chilli and olive oil is a fresh and
rich appetite opener. I cannot blame people?s
attraction to the place nor
can I blame Ramadan for being occupied in putting all his
effort in every dish: the food
was that tasty.

Ramadan?s
recommended vegetarian meal is ready
before I expect. You?re out of time, out of
ideas. ?After
five years more people demanded Egyptian food and
so for 15 years I still have the
same Egyptian food.?
Now he plans to make a 100
per cent Egyptian menu. In the
past 20 years, Ramadan believes that the growing competition has affected him
positively, mainly due to his
abilities with serving Egyptian dishes of high quality in
comparison to restaurants
that rely on microwaved
food.
?It really depends on
what a person is looking for
when they go to a restaurant, for the price, for a particular cuisine taste, or real
food. Just as traveling to an unfamiliar destination
can help you see your everyday struggles in a new light, flipping
through a book you normally wouldn?t have paid attention to or
reading a blog that you?ve never bookmarked before can give
you new insight in the kitchen . Liddon gave me more than just a new
idea to use in who knows how many other iterations down the
road. Ramadan points out
that the Egyptian Moussaka
is different from that found
in countries by the Mediterranean Sea such as Greece,
thus some customers have
been disappointed when their
meals have arrived.
As for my main dish, the

to a movie, especially when
they?re engaged in quickwitted sparring. Luckily so, because
on board the vessel was the

Memories for Life is one
