Juha Marttila, the chair of
MTK.
MTK is looking in to alternative ways of subsidising
the sector as the market pric-
es of pork are too low to allow
a farmer to manage without
additional support.
Koskinen: the 141
subsidy could not
be negotiated on
Minister of Agriculture Jari
Koskinen (National Coalition
Party) says it was pivotal to
?nd a new basis for the talks
on agricultural subsidies for
Southern Finland to replace
the old 141 payment. Article 141
in Finland?s accession agreement will not be abolished but
the European Commission
has interpreted the article to
refer to temporary funding,
which was set up to help Finnish farmers to adjust to Finland?s EU membership.
From 2015, milk and beef
producers in the south of the
country will receive coupled
EU funding instead of national agricultural support. Owners should
get a special dividend. This
change will not affect the
amount of subsidy for this
group of agricultural producers, with some of them possibly even better off under the
new system.
Pig and poultry farmers,
on the other hand, will end
up on the losing side under
the new agreement as they
will not be able to receive
coupled support. The fear
is that farmers in the north
will have to foot the bill for
dwindling national subsidies for farming in Southern
Finland.
The decision on the national agricultural subsidies for farmers in Southern
Finland reached on Thursday means that from 2015
onwards, a large number of
farmers currently receiving
the national 141 subsidy will
come under the EU support
system. Apparently they have no plans to continue much research in the handset business, so this will

In the Finnish education

observes.
Many efforts have been
made in terms of enhancing media literacy in Finland.
This year the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture drew up Cultural Policy
guidelines to promote media
literacy for 2013-2016. The many messages from these forms of
media are required to enhance youth awareness and
a critical understanding of
the media, the purpose of the
message and the intention of
the content producer.
However, it is fundamental to understand that media literacy ?is not only for
younger generations, but also for adults and elderly people, for parents, teachers and
media professionals,. On

week sees this duo coming
together in The Family.
Here De Niro plays
Brooklyn kingpin Giovanni Manzoni, an American exMa?a boss-cum snitch who is
transplanted along with his
family to France through the
witness-protection program.
With Tommy Lee Jones?s
Agent Stans?eld caught in a
perpetual cycle of relocating Giovanni, his wife Maggie
(Michelle Pfeiffer) and his
children, soon their cover is
blown once again. With further
proof of their growing global
cred, the turn of the century
saw them supporting Radiohead on a handful of dates.
Recorded in an abandoned swimming pool lot in
a rural Icelandic neighbourhood, the raw sound of their
third album, scaled back on
the rolling highs and lows
of their previous releases.
This did little to deter punters worldwide, with the band
greeting the new millenni-
um by being propelled into
the US and Japan markets.
Subsequent years have seen
them reshaping their sound,
offering occasionally tighter arrangements and pop
in?uences.
Released in June this year,
their seventh album, Kveikur,
saw them pursuing a more
aggressive direction that
continued pushing their music into unexpected directions. Offering a comprehensive review of the wide range
of media art from the past 18
years, the diversity and originality of each piece reveals
their technical innovations.

the news that multi instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson
