A current study is attempting to find out if a certain kind of temperament plays a part in how teachers grade students.
YLE NEWS 24 May. Temperament

Schools appreciate sociability,

Now, Professor Liisa

attitudes towards students.
Students planning to become

well as in Tallinn and Tartu.
?The first research result
that arises and possibly also

the level of sociability among

He also said the draft

MULTIPLE car bombs killed

Nigerian city of Jos, Plateau
state, days after a security
summit in France where African leaders committed to
a ?war. Benson Eluma of the Institute of
African Studies at Nigeria?s
University of Ibadan told IPS.
Rescuers and residents gather at the charred scene following a bomb blast at Terminus market in
the central city of Jos on 20 May.
The summit in Paris was
the first public effort outside of Africa to rally nations
against Boko Haram, which
is now regarded as a threat to
West and Central Africa.
The presidents of Nigeria,
Cameroon, Niger, Chad and
Benin, promised to share intelligence on Boko Haram,
monitor their common borders, and coordinate action
against the group. Oby
Ezekwesili, a former education minister and leader of a
daily sit-in in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, tweeted on Monday. Without West African

primarily at protecting Syria from being hauled before

After 35 days of searching,
there is still no clue about the
whereabouts of the schoolgirls despite surveillance and
intelligence assistance from
the United States, United
Kingdom, France and Israel.
But pressure is growing
on the government as at least
four people were killed on 18
May, in a another suspected Boko Haram bomb blast
in Nigeria?s northwest Kano
state.
Here in Nigeria activists plan to march on Thursday to President Goodluck
Jonathan?s office to present a ?charter of demands?.
Amongst other things, they
will demand more engagement of the authorities with
the families of the abducted
girls, and greater security in
Boko Haram?s strongholds.
Boko Haram, whose name
means ?Western education
is forbidden?, has frequently
attacked schools, symbols of
the state, churches and markets in their campaign to create an Islamic state.
Jonathan has been widely
criticised for his handling of
the crisis.
Nigeria itself has been
blamed for not taking the
campaign against Boko Haram seriously enough until the
abduction of the Chibok girls.
?The government and military establishment would
have to honestly own up that
defence and security allocations have not been utilised
for the purpose of building an
army capable of tackling the
Boko Haram menace,. No one has claimed
responsibility for the attack
but it is suspected to be the
work of Boko Haram.
The local population
holds little expectation of
an immediate triumph over
Boko Haram, as many feel
the Paris talks offered little
hope in finding the abducted
schoolgirls.

life-threatening situation is

UN reaches dead end in resolving Syrian crisis
INTER PRESS SERVICE
T HALIF DEEN
The
United
Nations
has reached a virtual dead
end trying to resolve the civil war in Syria . primarily as
a result of the stalemate in
peace talks and the continued deadlock in the Security
Council.
Last week, Lakhdar Brahimi, the joint special envoy
of the United Nations and the
League of Arab States, resigned after making little or
no progress in talks held in
Geneva between the government of President Bashar alAssad and rebel forces.
And a divided Security

political problem or mitigate
the growing humanitarian
crisis . Jonathan said.
For the first time since the

done little to address the resentment against Nigerian

Casualty figures of the Jos

from human rights groups.
The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH)
described the two vetoes as
?disgraceful. with four separate
resolutions being vetoed by
Russia and China.
In its failed attempt
Thursday, the Security Council was trying to refer Syria
to the International Criminal
Court (ICC) in The Hague on
charges of war crimes.
And Richard Dicker, international justice director at Human Rights Watch,
called it a ?disgrace.?
Still, Stephen Zunes, professor of politics and coordinator of Middle Eastern
studies at the University of San Francisco, told IPS
Thursday?s double-veto, ?as
reprehensible as it may be, it
isn?t very different than what
the United States has done
with far greater frequency.?
Since the creation of the
United Nations, the two big
powers have cast the most
number of vetoes: a total of
79 by the United States and
11 by the Russian Federation
(plus 90 by its predecessor,
the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or USSR), while
China?s tally is nine, according to the latest available
figures.
A coalition of eight nongovernmental organisations
including Human Rights

a ?shameful illustration of
why voluntary restraint on
the use of the veto in mass
atrocity situations is essential to the Council?s ability

expectations?.
?The Russian and Chinese

the United States, more than
any other country, which has
worked to undermine the
ICC.?
Not only has the United States refused to join
the court, a 2002 US law restricts foreign aid to any other country that does so and
authorises the president to
use military force to free any
American or citizen of an allied country held by the ICC,
he added.
On the other hand, Quigley told IPS, efforts at a negotiated solution appear
remote at this point, and the
allegations about war crimes
violations are substantial.
One other consideration
of practicality is that the ICC
would not be likely to gain
custody of anyone it might
indict, at least in the short
term. INTERNATIONAL NEWS

AT THE TURN of the millennium, an investigation into a
homicide sparked a medical
question that has probably
saved numerous lives.
The accused in the case
had taken a cocktail of medication and the investigators
consulted Professor Pertti Neuvonen on the possible
joint effect of the medicines.
As a professor of clinical
pharmacology at Helsinki
University, Neuvonen was an
expert in the field.
One of the medicines,
a muscle relaxant, caught
Neuvonen?s attention as it
was not known how the drug
was eliminated from the body.
The question did not bear
any relevance to the crime
but Neuvonen and his research team continued to
study the medicine and the
mechanism behind its removal from the system.
They found out that only
one liver enzyme in the human
body was capable of breaking
down the compound.
Under normal circumstances this did not cause
any problems but it turned
out that some antibiotics
on the market inhibited the
functioning of the enzyme.
Neuvonen and his team
conducted an experiment,
in which test subjects were
given both the muscle relaxant and one of the antibiotics, while closely monitored
by doctors.
The outcome was staggering: the concentrations of the
muscle relaxant shot up ten-
fold, resulting in a sudden
plunge in the blood pressure.
The test subjects were
drained of strength and some
of them were close to losing
consciousness. The next day, one
is hungover and more fast
food is consumed. explains Neuvonen.
?The discovery of side effects often leads to restrictions
in the use of the medicine, its
removal from the market and
occasionally even court cases
for damages.?
Not always surprising
Findings

by
Neuvonen?s team have not
always come as a total surprise to the pharmaceutical
companies.
?Sometimes I?ve been
able to read between the
lines that the research results only confirmed the
company?s suspicions but
they didn?t want to do another round of tests themselves
as the medicine had already
been approved for use,. This is why the
city of Turku maintains a valuable 90-piece collection of

FOR NEARLY 50 years, The
Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of
Art has been a landmark of
Turku?s cultural landscape.
Officially opened on 17 September 1967 and named after
Wäino Aaltonen (1894-1966),
it presents new and experimental art projects through
changing exhibitions and
other cultural events.
Wäinö Aaltonen is considered to be Finland?s most
important sculptor from the
early years of independence.
He created several public
sculptures of national value,
some of which still embellish
the cityscape of Turku.
In addition to his work as
a sculptor, Aaltonen is also
known as a Romantic painter
and for his impressive collection of about 8,000 literary
works that range from art
literature to Finnish and foreign fiction and non-fiction.
The city of Turku paid
tribute to Aaltonen with the
opening of the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art in September 1967. ?The venue was

that followed. Since then, prescribing both medicines at the
same time has been forbidden.
The example is dramatic
but illustrates well Neuvonen?s
achievements during his research career that spans more
than four decades.
Experienced proof
Already back in the 1970s,
Neuvonen proved that
consuming milk and iron
prevents the body from absorbing certain antibiotics.
Over the years, he has contributed to studies that have
revealed dangerous joint effects between anti-fungal
medicines and sleeping pills,
blood pressure medication or
strong painkillers.
Research carried out by
Neuvonen?s team has resulted in more than 50 doctoral
dissertations and hundreds
of scientific articles.
Since 2005, Neuvonen has
remained on the list of the
most cited pharmacological
researchers, featuring the
top half per cent in the field.
Over the past four decades,
Neuvonen has witnessed not
only an exponential growth
in the number of drugs on the
market but also a sea change
in the attitudes among the
medical profession.
?In the 1970s, doctors often believed that the patient
could cope with anything.
Thankfully, healthcare professionals are more cautious
these days.?
Despite the change in the
medical approach, side effects still constitute a major
problem, with adverse effects of various medicines
estimated to be the fourth
most common cause of death
in the United States.

?It is difficult to predict

In Alsace, second-hand shops
are not individual shops but
on weekends the whole village turns into one big flea
market.
Why this style?
My husband and I have been
doing swing dancing for
around three years now and
my dress sense has developed along with this hobby.
On the swing dance scene,
people usually go for the ?50s
look even though not everyone wears outfits from the
period for the dances. Being a visual person, I also like my everyday
life to be beautiful. I don?t have to
worry that I will bump into
someone in an identical dress
on the dance floor.
Someone said once at a
dance that they had never seen as many handsome
men and beautiful women at
the same time. There could also be some
nostalgia for the past involved, at least aesthetically.
Clothes bring joy to life ?
all too often, people wear
1111
clothes that are a little uninteresting and dull.
What does it cost?
I am a careful shopper. The series continues to receive excellent feedback from readers.
Buy online: www.6d.fi/fad or in major bookstores.. I
can make a wonderful find at
a bottom of a discount basket and then start putting a
whole outfit together around
this piece. You lose
the excitement of finding
something surprising.
For five years now, I have only bought my underwear new
in the shop. I get some unusual things from vintage
shops but I do not go to them
often as someone has already
picked the selection. It was all to do
with the clothes.
Vintage also adds a little
spice to life. I own around
thirty outfits, ten pairs of
shoes and ten hats.
Flea markets in small
places are the best places to
make finds. I like skirts and
dresses and only have a couple of pairs of trousers in my
wardrobe. JUNE

Vintage dresser: I only buy

Interest in swing

out Aili Kytö?s inner

is that no one item should cost
more than a hundred euros.
Usually I pay around twenty
euros for an item with the only exception being a crocodile
skin bag that cost 300 euros.
But my husband bought it for
me as a present.
My husband and I are
Francophiles and visit France
regularly. My husband likes
to wear bowties so I make
those for him from old ties.
The classsic 1950s polka dot dress is a find from a Parisian vintage shop for around 20 euros. Lindy hop and other
swing dances involve some
hopping so very high heels
are a no-no.
I like vintage clothes because I want to have an individual look. People should wear
more hats!

quarter of an hour.
I enjoy objects and furniture that have a hand-made
look about them, there is
something authentic and appealing about it. A whole outfit includes jewellery, shoes, a bag
and hat and perhaps even
gloves.
A hat is a vital part of the
style. The crocodile skin bag was
bought in Berlin for 300 euros.

hence the bike option. Again,
there are plenty of options,
and they include both renting your own boat and joining
a tour. 5

inenM. You will
be riding on bicycle-friendly roads, and for an additional payment, you can keep the
bicycle for the rest of the day,
until the company?s closing
hours.
If you?re in a competitive mood, Tour de Helsinki might be the right choice
for you. 8 H

The warm summer months make biking a joy, and are a great way
to get to know the city.
because enrolment fees will
go up as the date approaches!
The event is open to everyone from pro racers to casual bikers.
On the other hand, if
you?re more into bicycling
through the city at your own
pace, there are plenty of opportunities to rent a bicycle.
Helsinki boasts 750 km of
bike paths, which should be
enough to keep even the most
demanding cyclists happy for
a while. 4

There are already devices on the market that can be

In the near future, consumers may be able to buy

The villa, built in the late 19th century and situated in the lovely Tullisaari Park in Laajasalo, is
known for its great acoustics and peculiar history. Unfortunately, severe moisture damage was
discovered in the villa in 2011 and the culture events had to be moved to an alternative location
to wait for the villa to get renovated.

Also, I used to collect the
Finnish Art Review many
years ago and I wanted to
visit some family-friendly
art galleries when I came to
Finland.
The EMMA museum in Espoo did not disappoint; the
building is amazing and the
exhibitions were great, especially the one on Steiner and
it was incredibly child friendly. Malika loved the adjunct
Toy Museum with its collection of Russian toys and Babushka replica house.
The Kiasma gallery however was not so child-friendly and we gave up in the end
and had much more fun running around on the terrace
outside.
Yet Finland has surprised
me in one respect. Finland could definitely improve on this front.
Overall, though, Finland has been incredible. The
trains are fantastic and my
children were delighted to
discover the special carriage
for children with a slide, toy
train and excellent library as
well as a fab Richard Scarry
cat design on the designated child?s carriage. Travelling
around the country is an absolute pleasure and my children are so content. and that

travel in Scotland is an altogether different and stressful experience with children.
Top marks Finland.
In March we went on
a trip to Rovaniemi, Lapland which was a massive
hit with my daughters; they
loved seeing Santa Claus,
going on a reindeer ride
through the incredible Lapland forest and going on a
late night expedition to see
the Northern Lights.
We will never forget seeing the Northern Lights and
the amazing corona that is
quite a rare phenomenon.
I will also never forget the

Emma Afif-Watt is an Aki Kaurismäki fan, and a Masters student
currently on social work placement in Hämeenlinna.
Living the dream
of travelling to
Finland for a long, long time
and was delighted when I
found out I could do my social
work placement as part of
the Erasmus exchange programme in Hämeenlinna, a
small city one hour north of
Helsinki.
There was just one problem; I wanted to bring my
two daughters, Malika (4)
and Ameenah (1) with me as
well as my mother who would
look after them when I was at
my work placement.
Thankfully HAMK University in Hämeenlinna were and
have remained fantastic, supporting me to find accommodation for my family, as well as
welcoming my children at the
university nursery/ preventive social work programme,
Nipsula, where I have been
placed one day per week.
Coming to Finland as a
family has opened my eyes?
I don?t think I have ever
lived in such a child-centred
country.
I dreamed
Where to begin. I have met some
incredibly inspiring social
work staff in Hämeenlinna
and Helsinki (chatting to the
Radio Valo staff and meeting
Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät
was fantastic) and of course I
have worked with and alongside some amazing people, all
of whom know who they are.
Kiitos, kittos Finland, we
have loved every minute!
