This was what happened in the last presidential election in 2006, when turnout in the second round was somewhat higher than in the first round. It expects euro area GDP to decline 0.5 per cent this year and return to slight growth in 2013. Another notable feature is that this year is the first time a Green Party candidate has a realistic chance of becoming President. See page 17.

Today we must again open the deadlocks of our economic system and start the sustainable recycling of money.
SKILLFUL statesmen also put the wheels in motion after both World Wars when the infrastructure of the whole society was broken. Instead, in my opinion, states should take over the banks and financial institutions which cannot survive without selling their junk loans. Inventing new names for old solutions is not enough; we need innovative new solutions and the courage to apply them.
QUANTITATIVE easing is the traditional way to solve excess loan problems, i.e. It seems that this money will end up in private banks and financial markets, because states buy junk bonds without getting any return. However, the essential question is: Who will get this money. The present exchange rate is killing our industry and economy. Later on, states may sell these back to the private markets in boom conditions to get our money back.

IN CHINA, this kind of problem does not exist, because politicians do not need to woo the voters. This means that people who enjoy publicity and like to talk will be elected to the parliaments. Taxes are paid on nearly all trading (VAT), earnings, and income. The party chooses. The current situation is much easier, because we do not have a lack of resources, raw materials, knowledge, or even money. It will also lead to a massive redistribution of assets, which will particularly benefit those who have a lot of loans, real estate and shares. The first step is the taxation of the stock and currency markets using the so-called Tobin tax. Again we need wise statesmen, who will return the power to democratically elected parliaments using taxation and tight worldwide registration of financial transactions with heavy sanctions for criminal activities. This fundamental issue does not depend on the name of the currency, because most major democratic states are up to the neck in debt. At the same time, the value of our currency will devalue and prices of foreign goods will rise. This type of taxation will also guide the markets from short-term to long-term investments, which will stabilise the development of our society.

In her view, child protection is often seen as a punishment against the parents, rather than an attempt to help families in crisis.
"Parents and guardians should understand that we don't come to take their children away. The petition must contain either a draft law or a proposal for a draft law. It is always best for parents to contact the child protection authorities at a relatively early stage, she adds, rather than allowing the child's

Differing views Playschools and crèches would be the ideal places for the child protection authorities to carry out preventive work, since they provide an opportunity for more frequent meetings with parents than child welfare clinics. "Many people still equate the whole field of child protection work with having your children taken into protective custody," Mattila says. The petition can be in either Finnish or Swedish. The new Finnish law on the right to initiative will be brought into line with the forthcoming European Union-wide right to citizens' initiative. Heavily retrenched welfare services are increasingly concentrated on the elderly living at home.

You'll love the way we print it. There is consensus, however, on the view that bringing home child protection services back within the reach of families would prevent problems in many cases. However, this opportunity is very rarely used. Of all the notifications last year to the child protection authorities in Helsinki, for example, less than two per cent went through the daycare system. "What we consider here to be serious symptoms [of traumatic behaviour in a child] seem to be in their [authories] view too mild to worry about," she says. But here as in other areas there is still a lot to be done, she added. It will not be possible to apply for a right to initiative at EU level through the online services of the Finnish Ministry of Justice, however. That is the view of social worker Riina Mattila, the head of child protection services in Espoo. The process of bringing the latter right to initiative into law is currently underway, and is expected to be concluded by the EU Parliament in April. Potential warning signs may include the child refusing to play, withdrawing from the company of other children, clinging to an adult, or being frequently upset. If Parliament rejects the citizens' initiative, a new initiative can be put forward on the same matter again. Under the Constitutional reform allowing the right to initiative, at least 50,000 signatures from Finnish nationals are needed to bring a legislative proposal before Parliament. For both the Finnish domestic and EU citizens' initiatives, the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority is responsible for ensuring that the technical requirements are met for secure online signature collection. The majority of Finns, she said, are likely to share her concern about the increasing prevalence of defamatory speech and intolerance. Child protection work is a multi-sided thing, and the aim is to provide parents with the services and other help they need faster than they can otherwise obtain it." Divorce, for instance, is not in itself a matter of concern to the child protection authorities, but if children prove incapable of coping with the trauma of a family break-up then the authorities can be of assistance quickly, Mattila advises. Under the EU-wide right to initiative, a minimum of one million signatures from EU citizens who are entitled to vote in any member state is needed to bring a draft bill or proposal for a bill before the EU Parliament. On the other hand, the President also mentioned some encouraging trends, such as the increase in gender equality. At least the minimum of 50,000 signatures must be collected within six months of the right to initiative being granted to the applicant by the Ministry of Justice. IN A SPEECH delivered on 19 January, President Tarja Halonen once again expressed her concerns about the trend towards increased negative prejudices towards foreigners and other minorities in Finland. In the 1990s an average of eight per cent of families received child protection services in their home, compared to the present average of just two per cent. The new law on the right to initiative also allows for petitions to be organised for the proposal of changes to or the abolition of some law already in existence. According to the law, one or more people who are Finnish nationals and are entitled to vote in Finnish elections can initiate a petition on any matter. At both levels, the Finnish Population Register Centre is responsible for confirming the number of signatures and for ascertaining their authenticity. If the necessary minimum of signatures are collected within the allotted six-month period, Parliament is legally bound to take up the matter for consideration. The right to initiative became law on 13 January of this year, when it was signed in Parliament by President Tarja Halonen. Legislators and governmental agencies bear especial responsibility for taking a stand against bigotry, Halonen said: "Goodwill alone is not enough to end discrimination, rigorous effort is also needed." In this regard the President was critical of the relatively small levels of resources that are allocated to dealing with these problems, and expressed her hope that Parliament and the coalition government would take steps to correct this

The troubles faced once in Finland suggest that Finnish policy makers and authorities need to work to reduce prejudice and promote good relations between Finns and newcomers. Having to continually seek restraining orders can also be extremely draining for those subjected to harassment, Karinsalo says, and is also a significant expense for the victims, who have to pay their legal expenses to obtain the order.

RESTRAINING orders are far from being an effective way of bringing an end to abuse and intimidation by an expartner. Restraining orders It has now been five years since the divorce came through, but the abuse continues. The findings report that before migration, the majority of participants (about two-thirds) perceived integration to the new home country as the most desired option and they wanted to maintain their Russian culture as well as have contact with Finns and Finnish society once they moved. Good experiences of contact with Finns and positive attitudes towards them while still in Russia also helped boost immigrants' willingness to be in contact with Finns once in Finland. "The usual situation is that the relationship collapses, and then the bombardment starts: following, phone calls, harassment, when the offender isn't able to accept the break-up or keep their bitterness under control." Restraining orders are put in place as a result of threats, violence or serious harassment. "I think that if he'd managed to get his hands on me after that, he would've been a lot more violent. Pre-migration study sheds light on prejudices

A GROUND-BREAKING project on Ingrian Finns migrating from Russia to Finland has brought new and valuable information on how immigrants can successfully integrate into a new society. The system came into operation last November, following a public petition by people in the area. Elomaa estimates that the majority of the restraining orders have been imposed for harassment and intimidation of ex-spouses. In the years since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 about 30,000 Ingrians and their family members moved to Finland, where they are eligible for automatic residence permit in the Finnish Law of Return and, as of 2011, there were still 10,000 registered Finns in Russia eligible to move under repatriate status.

The project, Intervening at the pre-migration stage: Providing tools for promoting integration and adaptation (INPRES), was conducted by the University of Helsinki and led by Professor Inga Jasinskaja-Lahti, from 2008 to 2011. QUESTION OF THE WEEK
The presidential election's first round was won by National Coalition candidate Sauli Niinistö, who will face off against the Greens' candidate, Pekka Haavisto, in the second round on 5 February. Many were impressed by his broad knowledge of world politics, which he displayed modestly and without drama. Director of Suomen sikayrittäjät, the association of Finnish pig breeders, Martin Ylikännö, defended the use of the cages, saying they prevent piglets being crushed when suckling. However, according to Professor of domestic animal welfare Anna Valros of the University of Helsinki, research does not support this claim. Haavisto was one of the founders of the Greens in the early 1980s and led the party from 1993 to 1995. gentle approach to PS has earned him widespread respect among many of the pariah party's politicians and supporters. Free farrowing is no more dangerous to piglets provided that facilities are well designed, she said. Cosmopolitan, liberal-minded voters ignored Lipponen in their droves in favour of Haavisto, who is widely seen a far more convincing embodiment of these values than Lipponen.
If Finnish politics can ever be truly said to offer up "phenomenal" developments, then Haavisto's rise to prominence is at least a mini-phenomenon. MTV3: Most adults short on vitamin D
An average of one in four female and one in seven male Finnish adults receive less than the recommended daily intake of vitamin D. Haavisto's gentlemanliness and calm demeanour may also have their downsides, however, since some have hoped he would show more charm and vigour. He was Minister of the Environment and Development from 1995 to 1999, and after that worked for the United Nations in various environment-related programmes until 2005. THE SUCCESS of the Green's presidential candidate Pekka Haavisto in making it to the second round did not come as a big surprise in the end,
although six months ago noone predicted it. · Niinistö gained 37 per cent of the vote in the first round, followed by Haavisto's 18.8 per cent. For Nordea customers, this means higher mortgage interest rates since last spring. The report indicates a 0.57 per cent rise in mortgage interests in the closing months of 2012, but Nordea officials admit that the actual increase is greater than this. Although Haavisto's political outlook is largely in line with the Greens' ideals, his campaign has shown no desire to stick too rigidly to any single issue. According to the current official recommendations, adults should receive 7.5 microgrammes of vitamin D a day, either wholly through food or with the aid of vitamin supplements. HELSINKI TIMES

According to Soini's campaigner manager, Jukka Jusula, however, the reason for their mutual praising of one another is much simpler. Language requirements for doctors moving from one country to another are being tightened as part of the reform of the EU's professional competence directive. In Lapland, for example, the Toyota Avensis is popular. Tourism outside of the greater Helsinki area would develop and foster an economy in communities where there are high rates of structural unemployment. The magazine Tietoviikko was the first to report the matter. Language qualifications haven't been required of citizens of EU countries. At present, only those doctors coming from nonEU and non-ETA countries have needed to prove their language skills. `Money isn't speech, corporations aren't people'
In most mainstream media the words "corruption" and "election fraud" accompany images of makeshift polling stations manned by armed guards in Burma or burning tires beside tattered ballot boxes in South Sudan the insidiousness of stolen elections and a crumbling democracy is very seldom associated with the United States.
The result, according to Lisa Graves, executive director of the Centre for Media and Democracy (CMD) and a coordinating member of the constellation of organisations dubbed United for the People, has been an increase in outside spending on elections from 68.9 million dollars in 2008 to 304.7 million after the ruling. I do not see that reducing this sexuality is a great misfortune." But critics say there is a lack of reliable studies to back up claims about the effectiveness of surgical castration. "Today, we have turned out activists in hundreds of cities across the country to protests the idea that money is speech and corporations are entitled to equal rights as human beings," Graves explained. "Other methods of treatment are given preference all over Europe. Prof. Czech sexologists who treat sex offenders have also backed the procedure. President Barack Obama's own campaign adviser, David Axelrod, claims that these competing commercials have become the "nuclear weapon" on the battlefield of electoral politics. It has claimed that although Czech law states that written consent is needed from an offender confirming that they are undergoing the procedure voluntarily, some prisoners had given consent without being aware of what they were agreeing to or because they were afraid of receiving longer sentences if they did not. ANNOUNCING a raft of new health care legislation earlier this month, Prime Minister Petr Necas said the government would not be putting an end to the controversial practice of surgically castrating sex offenders, defending castration as an efficient method of stopping recidivism among sexual offenders. The process involves the removal of tissue in the testes which produces testosterone. Murphy was arrested Monday for participating in a peaceful action inside the lobby of a Bank of America, in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Zuzana Durajova, a lawyer with the Czech Human Rights League, explained: "Our concern is that it is very difficult to ensure that the person is really giving their consent voluntarily. Ales Butala, a human rights lawyer who was part of the Council of Europe's original delegation to the Czech Republic which called on the country to end the practice, has said the Council found evidence of three cases where previously castrated Czech sex offenders went on to commit violent crimes, including paedophile offences.
Castration for sex offenders triumphs
The Czech government has defied calls from international human rights groups to stop the practice of surgically castrating sex offenders.
human rights commissioner has said the practice is a throwback to out of date thinking on criminal punishments and leaves the Czech Republic out of step with the rest of Europe. "This is why `occupation' has been seized as a method of struggle: it has become clear to us that the avenues hitherto open to the people, like voting and legislation, are controlled by the one percent." 2 per cent. "A society run for the one percent will always allow them to write their own legislation and govern in ways that are favourable to capital," Murphy said. According to investment banking and asset management firm Needham and Co., television stations this year will rake in as much as eight billion dollars from political campaigns. Petr Weiss, a prominent Czech sexologist, told local media: "The chances of someone re-offending after surgical castration are about
like the kind we saw in the 1930s, where the government put millions of people to work. the Federal Election Commission (FEC), where the country's most respected justices "overturned a hundred years of election finance laws by ruling 5-4 that Congress cannot limit spending by corporations in elections." The decision struck at the very heart of what many US citizens have felt for years that despite a careful constitutional separation of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the government, corporate capital had infected the body politic from head to toe.
Activists and members of Occupy Los Angeles join Move to Amend protesters as they demonstrate in front of Los Angeles Federal Court. This 20 January marked the second anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United vs. They may agree to be castrated so that they can get out (of the psychiatric facility) and that raises the question of whether or not consent is voluntary." Czech authorities have defended the controversial practice, saying it is one of the best ways to reduce recidivism among offenders. But that is going back in time, like an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. The practice has previously drawn strong criticism from rights' groups, most notably from the Council of Europe. We consider it normal to castrate an offender and then it's dealt with. They say that sex offenders in secure psychiatric facilities agree to castration simply because they are desperate to be granted a full release or treatment on an outpatient basis, meaning that the consent is not `voluntary' at all. "If an offender is free, they can happily undergo castration, but it should not be part of treatment," Monika Simunkova, the Czech Commissioner for Human Rights, told local media. But rights groups have questioned the move and even the government's own. "We are demanding that this decision be overturned by a constitutional amendment." According to United for the People's statement of common purpose, "Generations of Americans have amended the Constitution over the years to ensure that `We the People' means all the people, not just the privileged few. The only way to fund such a programme today would be to get money from the one percent who are sitting on top of trillions that really belong to the people," he added. Super PACs can also drag their feet on releasing hard data on how much money actually changes hands during election cycles and, in the new arena of impunity granted by the Supreme Court, can accept donations from registered 501(c) non-profit entities that are exempt from exposing the identities of those who bankroll elections at will.
Much of this money is funnelled directly into TV ads, the bulk of them bordering on smear campaigns against opposing candidates. Head of the Czech Helsinki Committee, Anna Sabatova, said after the government's decision that the Czech Republic should do as the Council of Europe asks and that other, equally or even more effective, methods of treatment were available, including medicines and psychotherapy. The Citizens United case, which opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending to influence elections at all levels of government, has brought home the importance of amending the Constitution to ensure that `We the People' does not mean we the corporations." DAV I D J . During 2011, Talvivaara's and Stora Enso's share price were down 48 and 20 per cent, respectively. The information was released by Pörssisäätiö, which used statistics compiled by the clearing house Euroclear. Travel peace declared in Helsinki region
HSL and its partners in cooperation challenge passengers to work together to make 2012 a year of travel peace.
Public transport is meant to be just that something that is for everyone. It is a democratic, sustainable mode of transport in our rapidly expanding metropolitan area. Live performances start each day at 5.14 pm when the tram begins its journey from the Töölö Hall stop on Mannerheimintie. All public transport passengers are invited to sign the travel peace declaration at Matkarauhaa.fi, and to share their own wishes at the website (the website is in Finnish only, but you are welcome to write in English). During every month of 2012 the festivals taking place in Helsinki will also make an appearance on the Culture Tram. Make your own wish Our most important partner in cooperation in improving safety are the passengers. But now the schedule has changed, offering on-track culture on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. HSL has worked closely with various bodies in order to improve the safety of public transport. At its best, public transport is easy, affordable, reliable and safe. Buses run every half hour on weekends, and every hour on weekdays. An alphabetically ordered list of the different destinations can be accessed from the Directory link. We need tolerance and helping each other, not indifference. In addition to the live performances, Photo Raw magazine will have four photography exhibitions on the tram throughout the year, one for each season. On the weekends of the competition, and also after it until 19 February, Korkeasaari Zoo is open from 10 am to 7 pm. Any bad behavior and violation of human dignity are not acceptable on public transport. As a result of the work, a safety strategy has been created. Safety and the sense of safety are essential to good public transport service. Clicking on any part of the map displays the street address at that point.. The last bus towards the city centre leaves every day at 7.15 pm from near the zoo, at Mustikkamaa.

Where in Holland we had every Friday a sit together with some drinks, snacks and even a cigar at times, while joked around after a week's work. Finland work places seem to be very silent. Things have also got unpleasant at times, with inspectors being threatened with violence. Around 50,000 inspections are carried out annually, of which about 20,000 are caught for not having a licence. 3) Is the general atmosphere in work lively, or less lively, than your home country. At first the authorities relied on listeners' own honesty to come forward voluntarily and pay the fee.
The authorities soon developed a better understanding of human nature, however, and so began to licence inspectors in 1933. 4) Nah, no need for more minutes of silence. Severino Beltran (27) from Spain, worked for six months in a Finnish publish company in Helsinki. The one million mark was reached in 1969, the same year that colour TV licences were introduced. Because of the risks involved inspectors have been recruited from professions where people are well capable of dealing with tough customers."
Selected excuses · My husband has barred me from letting strange men into the house. · I've just moved in. A few of colleagues I have as facebook friends. · We just got a television the other day. 4) Do you find the standard 30-minute lunch break too short. At the place where I work now here in Finland the boss/employee relationship is as boss/employee, a clear difference in status and even lunch together is a thing that happens seldom, unfortunately. 1) My colleagues didn't socialise outside work hours. 5) I have noticed in Finland is the way people dress. 1) Do colleagues in your workplace associate socially outside work hours. They key to success is great and relaxed communication. 5) Well, once in work I got some food and people told me, "Sure we like spicy food." So off I go and got some spicy food. 1) I have to say that unfortunately we never have any sort of contact after work hours, at least not in person. I dare say that Finnish people are more reserved than Spaniards. The discounted price for the 8 subscriptions with the English exercise packages is only 336 euros for the school year. year on, TV licence-dodgers will have no more need to fear the doorbell ringing. Laakso points out that licences are still needed for the whole of this year, however. James Wright (25) from the UK, works in software support and development. It seems, from my own point of view, that Finnish people dress in a more casual way than Spanish people. Communication is informal also there is no problem in walking to another person's work space and asking questions. For the first few mornings I would arrive and greet everyone with "Hey, how are you doing" I did not expect a rundown of yesterday's tasks, or what they ate for breakfast. 2) Very relaxed. 3) I could say that the general atmosphere at work was not so lively compared to Spain. Fortunately, no inspector has ever been badly hurt on the job. There are a range of activities to help you through the day, and there is a constant exchange of ideas between everyone. And this with about 10 per cent of the people in her Finnish school. 2) The relationship I had with my manager was really nice. 1) Mostly we do not meet up outside of work hours, however I consider a few of my colleagues to be great friends. The TV licence era has indeed been a long one, going back in one form of other all the way to 1927, when televisions were still unheard of. 3) I notice this also at the schools. "Younger people in particular consider the licence fee as a burden they're unwilling to

back to 1927, when the radio licence fee was implemented to fund Finnish Public Radio, which had been founded the previous year. 2) Do you consider the relations with management and staff relaxed, formal or other, compared to your home country. Yleisradio began regular television broadcasts in 1958, and at the same time television licence fees were introduced in addition to the radio licence. This had to be paid in addition to the basic TV licence, and the radio licence. 5) And lastly, can you recall any amusing incidents of cultural differences in the workplace. I think that we use suits more often than Finnish do. 09 689 67422 Read more about the Helsinki Times ready-to-use English lessons at www.helsinkitimes.fi/htep. The national broadcasting company Yleisradio was responsible for licence inspections until 1988, when the task was transferred to what is now called the Finnish Communications Regulatory Au-

have already retired from those jobs," explains Anssi Laakso, the director TV licence fees at the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority. Source: the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority.

It's great because you never feel too stressed. The licence fee needs to be paid not only for households with television sets, but also those who watch television through the internet. It is important to point out that work hours in Spain are different from Finland. Robert Gerritsen (40) from Holland, has lived 11 years in Finland and works as a marketing designer. Anssi Laakso has done the rounds with licence inspectors, and has heard just about every lame excuse you could imagine for not having a licence. It was an informal relationship similar to those we have here in Spain. Some licence dodgers have gone further than threats, Laakso says. "Twelve of us will go on retirement, and efforts will be made to place the remainder in other jobs in public administration," says Laakso, himself one of the pensioners-to-be.
Doorstep threats The end of this particular era is not one that everyone will miss, since licence inspectors haven't been one of the more popular professions. 4) I think the standard 30-minute lunch break is great you end the day earlier! 5) My only cultural difference came when I first started working in Finland. · I didn't know there was a television in the house. In Spain there is a lot of chatting during work hours and colleagues tend to discuss all kinds of topics. In that year a radio licence fee was introduced, and over the coming decades it broadened to encompass the television. "Door-to-door licence inspections was only parttime work for them. From 2013 onwards, the country's 63 license inspectors will be gone. 4) About lunch break I think it is ok. "Some inspectors have been pushed down flights of stairs, or had knives waved in their faces. Licence inspectors will become a thing of the past when television licence fees are replaced from the beginning of 2013 with a tax what has already become popularly called the Yle tax. · I'm only here watering the flowers, I don't live here. Telling the inspectors "but I never watch Finnish channels!" won't get you off the hook either.
When the inspectors stop work at the end of this year, so will the TV licence authority, which means that its staff of 43 will be seeking new employment. My daughter goes to Dutch school every other Saturday and she complains about the noise people make during lunch hour. Only 8,000 TV licences were granted in the
first year, but just three years later the number was around 200,000. Older people on the other hand have become accustomed to it," Laakso says. 3) The general atmosphere is very lively here. The latter was dropped in 1979, but the black-andwhite licence went into the history books only in 1996. 12 2626 JANUARY 1FEBRUARY 2012 12 JANUARY 1 FEBRUARY 2012

Now I know that spicy in Middle Europe and Finland have a total different meaning - the Finns ended up getting new food. In the end she decided that it was best for her to finalise the creams and soaps herself, having only the raw materials sent to Finland. She finds it very hard not having much of a support net in Finland, with both their families living abroad. But the problem was that they had been packed in wooden calabashes, which although pretty and useful tended not to survive the journey to Finland in one piece. Black soap Also known as African Black Soap, it is traditionally made in West Africa, typically Ghana, from recipes that vary in different tribes, its main ingredients being the ash of cocoa pods (or plantain or palm leaves) and coconut oil. However, more and more foreigners are ignoring this age-old piece of advice and setting up by themselves; as someone who has recently done just that, I felt that it may be of use to share what I found to be the most important aspects of this transition. This way you can build up a client base and evaluate whether there is a demand for you and your product. But luckily for her, she's not one who spends time pondering whether something is easy or not. After some meticulous web surfing to secure the newly found niche, she was happy to discover that there were no companies in Finland making these particular products, and the road was all clear for her to set up her company.
The birth of Inkuto Contacts and family proved to be of crucial help, not only for financial assistance, but also for going through and extending her existing web of contacts. Edem speculates that this may be due to several reasons. "My mother started organising things in Ghana, by speaking to people she knew, and searched for the women who would prepare the raw materials." Meanwhile, Edem began researching the science behind the products as well as the inevitable logistics and bureaucratic issues. During the project part the student is encouraged to produce a game of their own design with the help of the teacher. She began by importing small quantities of readymade and packaged products. On her next visit, Edem gave the nurse some samples of the soap and shea butter. "First of all, women themselves are very suitable to being entrepreneurs; they are capable of handling several tasks at the same time, and are more sensible in their manner of tackling problems," she believes. Furthermore, at least at the beginning, there is no one to help you and it is certainly no fun sitting up at 3 am trying to hit a deadline. My first piece of advice is to think very hard about whether you want to be your own boss. During the course the student will learn object oriented programming and how to use this programming paradigm to implement Flash games. Issues such as insurance, pensions, registration and supplies all cost money, and if you don't have anything in reserve then your business could suffer from the very beginning: starting in the red is a very dangerous scenario to find yourself in. Edem was quick to assure me that it wasn't easy. She believes that by good planning the financial aspect
will eventually catch up with the development of the business. Apart from all the bureaucratic and logistics issues she had to resolve, "I had to develop new products, manufacture them, distribute them to different shops, and, later on, I also started to give traditional Ghanaian massage, but I still managed," she says, owing a large debt of gratitude to her husband, who apart from designing Inkuto's tags and labels does all the grocery shopping and helps by taking care of the child. In order to keep all the essential properties intact, the butter should be unrefined, and extracted by hand. Having some money behind you when you
begin is also very important. More importantly, she feels proud to empower women in her home country.
Edem Agbekey-Taylor, the proud owner of Inkuto Oy.
Immigrant women eager to start up companies According to a recent study conducted by the Uusimaa Regional Council, the number of female immigrant entrepreneurs like Edem has grown to surprising levels. Edem hopes to expand her business so that she can hire an assistant some day, enabling her to have more time for herself and for her family. Then my mother called and asked whether we had finished the black soap and shea butter, which she occasionally sent us and which I had completely forgotten about." This prompted Edem to try them out, and the baby's skin cleared up completely after only a week's use. Which programming language the student knows from before does not matter, as long as basic programming terminology is familiar. Apart from being used to obtain softer and smoother skin, unrefined shea butter has been shown to help with skin conditions and ailments such as extreme dryness, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, skin allergies, fungal infections, blemishes, wrinkles, stretch marks, scars, scrapes, dry hands and cuticles. "I love what I'm doing now, but when it comes to the money aspect, I was relatively well off when I was a mechanic. However, if you are willing to put in the anti-social hours and carry the burden, the rewards can be manyfold.
the various issues that accompany it are nigh on impossible to understand even for Finns! The material needed to master this complex web of taxation, pension rates and employee rights is rarely if ever available in English, meaning that foreigners are at a disadvantage from the very beginning. In 2009, there were an estimated 3,900 immigrant businesses in Uusimaa, 40 per cent of which were owned or co-owned by women. "It's very good to think about (these) things, but I would rather just do them," she says, and this seems to be one of the crucial factors in her success. The Finnish tax system and
Be prepared It is a very good idea to spend a period of time as a freelancer before committing to the financial rigours of a business. "I then contacted shops, which became interested, and customers liked the products, so things started rolling on their own weight from then on," she reveals. It is a romantic notion, but many don't think of the every day in-and-outs of running your own company. The nurse at the maternity clinic was amazed by the sudden disappearance of the rash. Then again, when immigrant women are compared to local ones, Edem believes that it is the life situation that makes the difference, "immigrants must always work harder to prove themselves to locals, so

Get a bookkeeper Getting a bookkeeper, to me, is the most crucial aspect of setting up a business as a foreigner. Another problem was that Edem could not control what went inside the products, nor the quantities. While it is nice to reap the benefits of your own work without various amounts being siphoned off by higher-ups, most of
whom you will never meet, it is these people who build the reputation of the company and, ultimately, face the consequences of failure. When Edem's daughter was born, it turned out that her skin was atopic and therefore very sensitive. Having said all of the above, I have to admit that setting up a business is one of the best things I have chosen to do during my short time on this earth. But she gets her energy back when someone calls or sends an email giving their thanks and telling how her products have helped them. You have to find the work, do the work, make sure the work is better than your competitors' and that it is completed for a price that is more competitive than anyone else not an easy combination. However, at this juncture, I must stress how crucial it is to shop around for bookkeepers and make sure that they have a decent grasp of English. "I asked people at the hospital what I could use for her skin, and they replied that `we only use water for babies' skin in Finland, nothing else'. "That is the joy that keeps me going," she says. Veronica Granö-Suomalainen, Education Ombudsman at the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, explains that though the project initially came about with the idea of helping Russian-speaking nurses to learn Swedish, the concept has now grown and expanded. Union membership is encouraged and every worker should familiarise themselves with the collective agreement to which their employer must adhere these collective agreements usually determine salary, at least for 90 per cent of the work force. The city is home to some of the nation's most significant historical sites: Turku Castle and the Cathedral of Turku instantly come to mind. Flanked by the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia on the Baltic coast, penetrated by the River Aura and surrounded by the archipelago with the most islands in the world, Turku is an outdoorsman's dream. Health authorities everywhere agree that good nutrition during pregnancy, and enough of it, is very important for your baby to grow and develop. It was named after Grand Duke Michael, the brother of Tsar Alexander I, in the early 19th century when Finland was part of the Russian Empire and streets were often named after members of Russia's ruling family. Thorough cooking of food kills listeria bacteria and ensuring food is cooked thoroughly and piping hot all the way through is one of the easiest ways to avoid this bug. Because of Turku's small size, the distance between venues is small, facilitating a city-centre crowded with pedestrians that creates a pleasantly engaging ambiance. On Ruissalo for example, you can rough it out camping and swimming in the sea, or pamper yourself at the lavish Ruissalo Spa.

But with a small population of fewer than 200,000, Finland's former capital seems to lurk in the shadow of the nation's current one. "The amount of alcohol that is completely safe during pregnancy is not known, so it can't be recommended at all," states Leppänen. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, the English and Russian language versions have not been updated since 2008. Offer valid daily after 3 PM until Feb 29. "Thankfully it's also easier these days to source our foods and spices from the Indian food suppliers. The restaurant itself is a tastefully renovated venue, seating 150 people in the main dining area, with a separate wing that seats 25 for private functions and a summer balcony area which holds 50. Prices here are cheap compared to a lot of downtown eateries, but Lali Gurans certainly doesn't cut corners on quality, tasty food. I've seen Finnish people try our chilli sauce and drink a whole jug of water and the next day they come back for more. There are also a number of lactose-free dishes, including three tasty vegetable dishes every day. Once they try I feel they like it." Not afraid to try spicy food myself, I go for the rojeko khana (combo plate) of khasi curry stewed lamb in a tomato/onion sauce and the piro machha deep fried pike-perch fish in a spicy ginger/garlic/chill sauce. In Nepal we don't use so much cream, but here people like lots of cream," explains Aryal. Currently the former harbour area is under development to turn it into the newest and most hip neighbourhood in town, and the influx of people should bring Lali Gurans the clientele it deserves projected figures say the new Kalasatama development will bring 18,000 residents to the area. Diners should at least have their lunchtime to relax and enjoy good food and forget about the stresses of the office for a while," explains Aryal. The unspiced naan was pleasantly surprising in that it tasted light and lacked the oily stodginess of some naan bread

resolving to travel lighter in 2012, many of us are carrying a payload of 2011 ham and pie trapped in our middles like stubborn excess baggage. Publishing their results in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2010, they found that the heavy dairy consumers also most improved the levels of vitamin D in their blood, which they believed might help promote weight loss. the Mediterranean diet and clearly outperformed the low-fat diet. The low-carb diet is defined as 20 grams of carbohydrates daily for the first two months, with a gradual increase to a maximum of 120 grams per day, also most improved subjects' lipid profiles. The trial separated 322 moderately obese subjects into three diet groups and found that mean weight loss after two years in the lowfat, Mediterranean, and low-carb cohorts were, respectively, 3.3 kg, 4.6 kg, and 5.5 kg. And there were about 2.5 times more low-carb than Mediterranean dieters whose urine contained ketones, which are broken down from fats when there is not enough carbohydrate-derived glucose in the body. +358 9 4336 6330 omalleys.torni@sok.fi / www.omalleys.fi Opening hours: Mon-Thu 4pm-1am Fri-Sat 2pm-2am, Sun closed

Fredrikinkatu 46 (Kamppi, Autotalo). A 2009 Harvard study pointed out that several credible studies have independently touted each diet's weight loss superiority. But the low-carb diet didn't win a unanimous decision. Helsinki Times reported in December that butter consumption rose by one-fifth in 2011. Pretty impressive for the low-carb dieters considering they had no calorie restriction, compared to the respective 1,500 and 1,800 calorie ceiling women and men suffered through in the other diets. These three studies are not the final say in the battle of the diets, however. KITCHEN 11-23 FRI 11-02 . 20

The researchers discovered that heavy dairy consumers in their cohort lost 5.3 kg over two years compared to low dairy consumers' 3.3 kg weight loss, whether they were on the low-fat, low-carb or Mediterranean diet. The official fad diet of 2011 is blamed for contributing to a Nordic butter shortage and a decline in Finnish bakeries' revenues. 09 6981225, helsinki1@vapiano.fi, www.vapiano.fi MON-THU 11-24 . +358 9 635 732 www.juuri.fi

The Canadian scientists hypothesised that the intake of calcium from dairy, rather than supplements, might have aided in the favorable body changes. The high dairy cohort lost the most total and visceral fat, and gained the most lean body mass after 16 weeks. Many have already turned to the much-discussed lowcarb diet. The body's Vitamin D levels have been known to rise with weight loss and fall with weight gain. Our broad selection of regenerating, stress-removing and revitalizing treatments has been very well received in Finland. I have encountered difficulties such as the four attempts to get to Malmi registration office, and the near hour spent on Albertinkatu looking for the magistrate's office (in my defense there was building work blocking the entrance). That's right, I am obviously referring to the beauty of Nordic women. We welcome You to experience the beneficial effects of our treatments on your health and well-being and to breathe new life into the spring together!
